The major problem as it stands aerial is, we may want to rid the world of nuclear weapons but the greatest deterrent of nuclear weapons sadly is nuclear weapons or mutually assured destruction which is paradoxically absurd.
The fact is the conflict continues to escalate unless an agreement can be reached and a timetable for it to go into effect. It forces guilds who do not want to use banners to use them when others run around and then eventually everyone just points fingers at one another blaming each other.

The outpouring has been amazing. We have to keep the energy up and keep the post active, and start making videos. But in the mean time. I started compiling a list of all the guilds and their commanders/leaders. Militia commanders/leaders. Server Leads too! If you can help me, I tried my best but sadly the list is not nearly complete enough. If you give me what guild you represent, I am happy to update/add your guild/server.
I think when they see just how many of the key voices from across all tiers are upset it will cause them to take even more notice!

I personally haven’t run into a lot of banner problems but it is really easy to see how banners effect outnumbered fights for both sides. If you’re the smaller group with banners, you can one shot the enemy zerg. If you are the zerg with banners, then you really need to reevaluate how you play WvW if you lose. If both sides have banners the zerg should win but it is necessary for the smaller group to have banners to stand a chance. Unless the zerg is actually full of first time players.
For me though, there already has been “needed things” in zerg fights since the game came out etc. like guardians, certain builds, invisibility. Seems we have to add banners to that. I have played since headstart, I’ve been in multiple fight guilds, and in my opinion, banners don’t really take away skill. Most classes press a couple of buttons at most in zerg wars and use a few more in certain situations. (I have played every class in group combat WvW and know the rotations.) Banners are just another thing to look for in a comp, like revs were at the beginning of HoT. Anet might need to tone down how hard it is to kill the banners because the banner carriers survivability is way to strong in a 50v50 situation though.
I also like the idea of only letting the outnumbered sides be able to active tactivators, but why would WvW players buy the expansion for wvw upgrades when you can only use them if your server is outnumbered…. Anet rushed the banners out the door like a bunch of other HoT stuff. The WvW overhaul wasn’t ready and they needed something to seem alluring for WvW guilds to work towards. Banners have become their own class because of how strong they are. They need balance updates just like any other class or at least make it to where a 60 man can’t have banners against a 10 man.
Khal I think you make some great points but what I think you seem to dismiss which is the real issue most of the guilds, drivers, and hardcore wvw players have with the banners. Unlike set comps, builds, etc, 2-3 people running the banner in a large scale fight can determine the outcome of the fight.
We run set comps, builds, food, because we want to be competitive in a skill based environment and maximize our effectiveness. If the other team runs two guardians in a party and your team runs 1 guardian in a party out of 50-70 people that in and of itself will not decide the outcome of the fight. The skill, strategy, and coordination of the group can easily compensate for that lack of guardian or extra bear bow ranger. Put simply, a few people running the wrong builds, classes, food buffs will not decide the outcome of a large scale fight. However, the banners do.
The fact is it only takes a T2 structure to utilize those banners. Let us use Blue EBG 1/3 as an example. It is quite normal to have at least a T2 Keep and T2 Langor. Infact you can actually check the frequency those two structures are flipped over a 24hr period and you will find that they are far more likely to be T2 or greater than not. Then let us throw Bravost into the mix which is flipped more so than the other two but still is a highly infrequent occurence. Now we are up to 3 structures producing banners, a situation that is normally occurring most of the time throughout the day. This is not an anomaly, this is typical.
Furthermore, the side that owns SMC creates a buffer on their 1/3 and makes having even more banners a reality. Soon the peripheral towers can reach T2 as well, coupled with SMC. I think it is quite easy to extrapolate the effect of this. In fact it reminds me of the orbs and why they were removed. In a game about parity and competitive fights exacerbating a losing situation for the other servers is a horrible way to convince others to play. We saw what happened with the orbs…they did not.
I also say, for those not experiencing this problem, as more guilds gain access to these banners, and more see the outsized power they bring it is an inevitability until this is addressed. Hopefully someone will start recording footage, or we will have to create a situation where we run around with 9 of these banners, 1shotting zergs to demonstrate just how inane this really is.

Hello, I am the guild leader of a large WvW guild that has played in gw2 since beta. We currently reside on TC. I am also the owner of a lvl 52 guild hall, therefore I have access to all the buffs in the war room. I am also the one who started the movement to address server statuses with the advent of mega servers. I enumerate my background to give credence to my post and to demonstrate my impartiality in the discussion.
While I think the intentions behind the War Room upgrades was to create a meaningful reason for guilds to invest and upgrade their guild hall who are focused primarily on WvW I think a necessary discussion must be undergone to re-evaluate the nature of these upgrades and their current outsized impact in WvW.
Server statuses are dropping at an alarming rate, to put this in perspective, before the expansion of GW2 the populations were extraordinarily higher. A game that has not had an expansion in years had higher WvW populations than one a few months after an expansion with new maps, mechanics, and class specializations, I cannot think of anything more indicative of failure than this.
There have been numerous posts elaborating on the failures of the borderland map, the break bar mechanics in wvw, and other things. However, what needs to be addressed immediately are the War Room Upgrades. It is destroying one of the only vestiges us WvW players have left, fair and fun fights against one another. To put it bluntly the integrity of WvW is at stake as a competitive gamemode all because people did not realize the magnitude and abuse that such upgrades could bring when employed by serious WvW guilds.
In a 50man group, each person makes up 2% of the overall raid, outside of the driver each player contributes a fairly standard amount to the outcome of each encounter. However, with the advent of banners, one player utilizing but a few skills can have an outsized impact on the fight as a whole well outside of their 2% margin. In fact, groups are running around with 3-4 of the banners in large scale fights, fights of 100 players are being decided by 3-4 players and forcing those who want fair and fun fights that require strategy, skill, and teamwork to use these banners if they want to have a chance to stand against. Quite simply it is forcing players who want competitive and engaging game play to utilize the same perverse tactics simply to play in the gamemode they enjoy. All this is doing is driving players away from the game mode.
This needs to be addressed immediately. We must remove or severely reduce the overall effectiveness of these banners before it is too late. Simply telling players to target banners, Moa Banners, run your own banners, etc is not a solution, it is a callous attitude that is leading towards the destruction of the only reason most of us play this game, FIGHTS!
Furthermore, the broken nature of War Room Upgrades is not limited to just banners, but the aerial strike, amongst others. The purpose of this post is to start meaningful dialogue to address this dire situation before it is too late. Please bump this post or support this post to gain it attention, views, and more importantly a response.

I am really glad that Arena net finally listened to the community 5 months from when this post was started. Sadly a lot of people on many servers were affected by this condition. In fact, many spent a lot of gold and real life money just so we could play viably in WvW again.
Something many players were discussing and perhaps wondering was if Arenanet could reopen free transfers to the servers with a high/medium/lower wvw population for tier 3 and under once the new metric goes live? This action will allow for a repopulation of servers that were mistakenly marked very high/full and in actuality were not.
I feel this is the only way to create good will for all the players particularly before the expansion. It will enable players to play where they want to not necessarily where they had to. It is a thought and like this thread of which you listened to the voices of the players. I hope you give this idea consideration as I think it will go a long way towards building good will in the community!

This is what makes it so troublesome, with the advent of cross-server pve guilds who are on a server in name only, since they are counting towards the total, at a point blackouts become arbitrary because the PvE community dwarfs the WvW community that even if all the WvW centric players log out, it is not enough to shift the server off full status. This is why it becomes such a dire problem as the players have no control over fixing this situation and our only deliverance comes from someone with the authority to respond and acknowledge this problem.
bump – Can you please address this as it has not been fixed and is causing large amounts of customer dissatisfaction. We never received a formal response and it is clear that with the advent of megaservers this has become a major problem as PVE and WvW are not the same.

I think we would all really appreciate that! I know so many of us who love WvW would love to have a better understanding of important mechanics like this to foster a healthy discussion.
This was my favorite:
DB has a much smaller WvW population, but a larger Legacy PvE population and is marked “full”. Servers with a far larger WvW population such as JQ, FA, YB are marked “very high” the same as Sorrows Furnace or Kaineng. Bronze Tier Servers being treated the same as gold league servers. All very interesting points!
Hi, I am a guild leader on Dragonbrand and one of its server leaders. Our community has come together to express a curiosity and deep-seated desire to further understand the “Server Population Status” determination.
The reason for this desire is that with the advent of the PVE “Mega” Server to alleviate the constraints a low server population can put on its populace the only true purpose of server identity we believe at this point is in WvW.
However, many believe that the metric used to measure the health and robustness of a server population (a server’s population status) has not been adjusted for this major structural change within the game. We were wondering if this belief could be confirmed as we would greatly appreciate any insight!
We are worried that if this metric is still being employed it is putting our community at a large disadvantage. The reason is that this puts an undue hardship on those within a community who enjoy playing the WvW game mode and require a strong identity of server to succeed as they are not afforded the same opportunities as other servers who are not marked “Full”.
We think one such suggestion is to tie the server status of a population to a moving average WvW population over weekly or biweekly periods. We think this may be more indicative of true “Server Population” in the only facet of the game where population size is still relevant.
Again, this is merely a suggested alternative. We just are wondering if with the structural change to the game has a more meaningful metric been employed to capture the health of WvW on a server to better determine the servers population status.
Our server would greatly appreciate any feedback a developer or someone of import could shed on the matter as it is greatly affecting our ability to be competitive against those with a larger overall WvW population but a “Very High” status to our “Full” status.

you mean WvW will be based on skill again not based on an unbalanced numeric handicap. You mean matchups will actually have parity and allow more servers to be competitive? You mean you are being penalized for constantly bandwagoning? Best change Anet could have ever done to the game, now there are 24 real skill oriented matchups where servers will not get railroaded by being hopelessly outnumbered.
The the population cap has been too high in all t4 and below servers for months. WvW was inherently broken as the maps were meant to hold far more than those participating and the reality was outside of your own BL and Eternal most maps were never even in play and it facilitated turtling in your own BL and fully upgraded BLs sieged to the hilt with very little turnover removing fluidity and crushing morale particularly by Saturday-Sunday afternoon. Now it will actually be a 3v3 on the other servers. More importantly, night capping will no longer be as brutal and as exacerbated as it was. The servers were so imbalanced it made for static matchups for months will little change. The constant xferring led to breakdowns in the glicks as it took weeks sometimes over a month for servers to fight in their rightful bracket. I think any real pvpers/strategy game players will finally take WvW seriously. Ceteris Paribus, if numbers are equal again, the differentiator is communication, tactics, strategy, leadership. It, really sets an awesome tone for the coming patches and changes. If you are upset you cant massive overload against smaller servers to CRUSH THEM +695 then transfer. The game was meant for the other 80% of the playerbase to enjoy playing not just the greedy brats who like to play Monopoly by stealing from the bank and want to win at all costs instead of honorably on their own merit. What is the purpose of winning if it based on an arbitrary metric. This is the most pure and competitive WvW has been. You are fighting in the first fair matchup since the game population dropped off from September. Revel in the challenge. Adapt, truly earn the title of best server based on your merit.
I am a guild leader of an NA WvW guild and we have been around for a long time and as thus had the privilege of playing in many games, and typically on a high lvl.
I have been waiting for my real Christmas present which is this February Patch (and now March but I digress).
I put asterisks around Guild, because the title of this game is so laughable and the amount of effort to maintain the integrity of that name minimal.
Guilds in this game are more like fastfood restaurants than an actual bedrock of the very server in which they play. Guilds should be pervasive in every aspect of the game to maintain community that keeps most players around far after the content loses its luster.
The reality is what is the purpose of players joining and participating in guild raids in WvW or even in PvE (shudder the thought)?
The guild recognition and reward system is nonexistent. The most a guild gets is a headache of paying for keep upgrades and being yelled at for not popping buffs. Then you may as well create multiple guilds so you can just keep popping buffs because outside of that your tag has no meaning or depth, has no symbolism, the game itself fosters that. See that is the mockery of it.
When will Arenanet address the real issues plaguing the community, that in all MMOs it is GUILDS that build servers, that create continuity. You want to trap players on servers after february, I wholeheartedly agree, ( think its months late and servers are now completely out of wack but the intention is good) but now give players a reason to be proud of their allegiance, of their likeminded group who they work with to achieve objectives. Where is the pride they can bestow on both their allies and themselves!
How can guilds compare themselves to other guilds on their own server, in their tier? How can they gain prestige in their community? Where are the events that take more than just a random mob to accomplish? How can you stop the constant free riding and tag switching that has been synonymous since release.
Give guilds things to strive for both on the battlefield and within their own server. Make coordination and teamwork something encouraged. Make loyalty and trust something more than a word, give it flesh, life, meaning.
Please make this game GUILD WARS 2. Give us purpose.

EB is still looking for more guilds as we keep moving up! We are looking for all likeminded community driven WvW guilds in all timezones.
The guilds named above are just some of the new guilds who have come to this server. We are new and are the first to say how amazing and welcoming it is here. The cooperation and teamwork witnessed by all my members made us never question the decision we made to leave behind the vitriol that we endured on our previous server.
It is definitely a different server than it was even a week ago. I think what eithinan has written is well on point. If you are from other servers where people care more about their own ego than results on the battlefield and you are tired of constantly feeling like nobody answers your calls for help and reinforcement. I urge you to consider EBay, the people here play WvW as it was meant to be played!

HI, I am a guild leader on IOJ for NA primetime. As soon as I logged on this morning I had mail and whispers talking about this thread. This is how hungry our community is for players like yourself. How much value we think you would add. We are a tier 2 server, and are fighting tooth and nail to maintain.
We have been trying really hard to reorganize the server and have made great strides. Our server has really stepped it up over the last 2 weeks. This week we kept the score within 10 until Wednesday night.
We are in great need of more NA WvW players. When it comes to fighting. We never run, we can take on numbers 2-3x ours and fight both servers at the same time. We are always outnumbered but we are never outskilled. We really would love to share our home with you!
If you want an opportunity to play with skilled and fun pvpers while making a difference in WvW, IOJ is definitely the place to do it. I have never seen a time where the pvp is not competitive. I think you will not regret your choice!

I am the guild leader of a hardcore endgame PvP guild. World ranked in AOC/Aion/Swtor (rated). We originally rolled on dragonbrand server with high expectations from months of beta and dominating in WvWvW. We had queues slightly but nothing to cause hesitation.
Since early access every time we have tried to do guild raids, only 15 of 60 could get on the entire night. Most Queues during primetime have been 3+hrs!
More importantly when you do get in, the other players in there are trash, since their is no homogeneity due to a lack of organized guild presence by any one particular guild. It is simply diluted with large amounts of pugs making team work consist of calling each other name in team chat and many randoms with no real group yelling orders at those leading actual people on VOIPs causing more frustration. There is minimal strategy to speak of. Basically its a kittenhow!
2 Days ago, we made the bold step to transfer to one of the new servers ArenaNet opened up the past weekend. It was possibly the greatest decision we ever made. 2 nights in a row we could get over 60 of our guildmates with no queue and operate in cohesion with full guilds in tactical formations and strategic positioning leading to our total domination of the map! It was how we always envisioned WvWvW to be for us and I am sure…..many other guilds too!
Any guild interested in doing serious WvWvW I implore you to come to Devona’s Rest and leave the pugs behind. If you want to vie for world best in an environment that makes it feasible lets do it on our own terms not with this mockery of a queue system on these “full” servers!
How easy is it?

Names are unique, no changes required!
It is instant!!!!! It took us 30 seconds, of logging in and logging out!

On raid nights we have 70-80 of us coordinated in our battalion system conquering the whole map within 2hrs of reset. We have yet to lose a match during primetime. Mike, it will not matter if the matches are 1 day, 1 week , or 1 year. Every guild is feeling apathetic about investing any serious amounts of resources/siege into a building when they know when they wake up it will be for nothing.
it is not arbitrary, anyone who plays MMOs knows, the most concurrent users are during prime EST hours from 6pm until 1am. Queue times on any full server will show you that. A problem, you have to be a troll kid. Do you not see the score differentials when you log on? People are capping the entire map when you wake up and getting 700 points every 5 minutes, creating 35-50k score gaps before you wake up. Evidence, its everyday if you arent blind.
why is a lockout the worst solution, substantiate your criticism please. Offer solutions!
that is not a solution, If it is an american server or a EU server treat it as such. The purpose of such a designation is to notify the gaming community of appropriate servers to play on. Because a minority of people who choose to pick “American Servers” which it says at the top of world selection, should be allowed to ruin the game for a majority of the community?
based on what? if it does not work for 24hrs why the hell would it work for 2 whole weeks? Furthermore, read the wiki, they created an indepth rating system like they use for chess. Why would you create algorithms and factors for something you are saying is arbitrary, seems contradictory doesnt it?

It is simply diluted with large amounts of pugs making team work consist of calling each other name in team chat and many randoms with no real group yelling orders at those leading actual people on VOIPs causing more frustration. There is minimal strategy to speak of. Basically its a kittenhow!
2 Days ago, we made the bold step to transfer to one of the new servers ArenaNet opened up the past weekend. It was possibly the greatest decision we ever made. 2 nights in a row we could get over 60 of our guildmates with no queue and operate in cohesion with full guilds in tactical formations and strategic positioning leading to our total domination of the map! It was how we always envisioned WvWvW to be for us and I am sure…..many other guilds too!
Any guild interested in doing serious WvWvW I implore you to come to Devona’s Rest and leave the pugs behind. If you want to vie for world best in an environment that makes it feasible lets do it on our own terms not with this mockery of a queue system on these “full” servers!

Only organized guilds on the server with few pugs!
I make this post because, I know to compete for the top, we need around 3-4 more strong guilds or 7-8 medium ones and a bunch of small ones. Preferably of different time zones. Egos are not needed on this server, just common interest in being the best! I love WvWvW, its the greatest more strategic large scale pvp ever implemented, it mirrors an RTS with people. However, as noted in numerous other threads, there is an inherent flaw in the scoring system that allows servers to accrue large amounts of points not based on skill, tactics, strategy, teamwork, or anything competitive, but simply taking undefended objectives due to playing when others are no longer on.
These are American servers, they are advertised as such, the reality is non North American players are exploiting this designation to ruin any sense of parity or skill. Nobody will ever take their servers ELO rating seriously because it does not reflect that servers true skill in WvWvW due to this major issue.
I propose a lockout. WvWvW needs to have a lockout from 2am to 10 30 am est everyday. I am unsure if this will stop every abuse and exploitation of the current system but the reality is if you want American players to take WvWvW seriously this obstacle must be removed or WvWvW will cease as a competitive basis for most serious hardcore endgame guilds. Since they know all the hardwork and effort put forth carries as much wait as though who play at 4am when 95% of the server is in bed.
We are rewarding the wrong behavior and removing the competitive nature of it all. I urge people to continue posting. Servers ELO should be based on skill not based on timezone of players! Why make a ranking system like chess if you allow people to win the match while their opponent sleeps!
