Modifcation to the Game Bans Dec17th-19th
in Account & Technical Support

Two of my friends were banned for the same reason (tampering with the client) during or right around the very same dates you list. Neither of them has any of the technical knowledge to hack, crack or deliberately alter anything. They simply are not computer technical people, I built his computer for him. They were on, playing, and decided to take a break, they came back a bit later and the game downloaded an update. When they tried to log in to play, it told them they were both banned. They are both very normal players who log in, obey the rules, report gold sellers and leave people alone unless invited to do a dungeon or something. They do however, have pretty unreliable internet. They use the practice arena net taught us during the beta playing, of going with their laptop to her parents house and downloading big updates with her parents much faster much more reliable internet, then bringing it home and transferring the files to his desktop computer. I am curious if you suffered any disconnects while playing or have somewhat questionable internet also. Did it happen to you right after the same update download?
I can’t help but believe that somewhere in these multi-transfer operations they may have unwittingly damaged the game client or it’s windows applied attributes data and this was possibly detected by the game client as “tampering”. I hope Arena Net figures it out as their support tickets both show as closed. I am really not enjoying playing knowing they won’t be here with me. I have played WAY less than I would have if my friends were available. They talk about buying another copy for her but I would never buy another copy myself when I don’t even know how the client got damaged the first time. Even if Arena net is following their own rules very correctly with the ban, buying another copy when you didn’t hack it and you know you did not, is like saying it is ok to give away the cost of the game every time the client detects something wrong.
I had my friends run scans with Malwarebytes, Spybot and Hijack This but nothing was out of the ordinary. I do not believe they were hacked.
The Arena Net folks have been very decisive and good at dealing with my own issues when there have been any. I fully believe this is a mistake that will get righted in time. I do not know the numbers at the end of their account names but the ticket numbers and names are Tabikitty 12128-001663 and DrZombie 12129-001738. They both play on his desktop, her while we are at work and him when we are off. That makes his client the likely one that was damaged, and the likely reason they were both banned at the same time. Anet if you are reading this, please look into this once more. Ever since this happened, every time I log into my own client I fear it will tell me I am banned when I haven’t done anything but log in and play correctly, by the rules. We all love the game, don’t mind buying extra gems that make you more money, and we really appreciate all of the amazing work you have done with this game. I am sure you hear people screaming “I didn’t do it!” constantly when all the available evidence says they did. I am very confident these are not a couple of those cases. Both of them hate cheaters and have reported gold seller emails several times. Thank you for the time it takes to read all of this.
