Hi,
I just wanted to possibly reinvigorate the discussion for the renaming option in the cash shop. I know it’s not a critical issue, but I have spoken with quite a few players about it and they have all remarked on how they would love to be able to change their characters name.
My reason is just because I made a thief to get a feel for their play style and found myself at level 20 before I realised I loved the class, but the name was just the result of what ever was left after trying multiple times to get the name I wanted.
Anyway, I just wondered if their were many people who also wanted this function added to the shop. It can’t take much work to do, surely.
It amazes me how some people love to add a negative opinion to a post that offers a possible fix regardless of it’s length, yet don’t offer any alternatives or solutions. How do you think that you are contributing to the problem?
Basically what you are saying, is that, the GW2Setup.exe is infallible, so if anyone is having problems with crashes, errors, etc., it must be there own fault.
Assume for an instant, hypothetically of course, that my hardware is tip top, I don’t have any viruses or rootkits, I don’t have any conflicting software and my internet is fine. What then?
Because you’re obviously experts in the field, so what do you do if you ever have crashes or errors? Even though I doubt you do. Such intellectual skyscrapers as yourselves could be a great help by offering your opinions to all the other threads regarding these matters.
Espionage has actually added some valuable information, so why don’t you?
I fixed my problem via a rudimentary and methodical system of deductive reasoning, and that is why I listed everything I did.
So if you have more than impulsive egotistical opinions to share, by all means, share them, and all us poor Epsilons can bathe in your brilliance.

Hey Everyone,
I’ve been having the same problems as most of the posts for weeks now and no matter what was suggested, it never fixed the game. First I had connection problems while trying to download and after finding a fix for that, I played for 15mins and then the game froze. It kept freezing until it wouldn’t even load. I even had a few BSOD’s.
I have it fixed and extremely stable now.
Firstly, if you are having problems finishing the download, you can go to the properties of you network adapter through the network and sharing centre and select the IPv4 line in the connections list, then click properties and tick the “Use the following DNS servers addresses” and fill them out as 8.8.8.8 and below 8.8.4.4. I have to give credit for this to Cervani.8263.
Downloading the game is the most important part of the problems. The Gw2.dat file is an image file and therefore subject to corruption due to mismatched MD5 checksums, anyone familiar with downloading Linux distro’s will know about those. The corruption is caused by anything during the download from the source, like running your PC heavy with other applications, to downloading other files at the same time, so it’s best to start it and walk away, and make sure you don’t use your network from elsewhere either, just to be sure.
Then once you have the game fully downloaded, do a -repair run straight after to make sure the image is complete. Then I copied the Gw2.dat file into a separate folder as a backup, so I didn’t have to download it from scratch should it become unstable again.
Then run the game and it should be completely perfect and stable. Mine is now, but it’s been an extremely frustrating couple of weeks trying to get my head around it.
I’ve suggested to the support team that a torrent file be made available or just a single file that doesn’t require the Gw2Setup.exe to download it.
Now after all this, you may still have problems, in which case I appologise for claiming a solution. But I now have the game running beautifully and it’s because I realised that the Gw2.dat file is a very fragile image.
I really hope this helps most of you, because I almost gave up.
Thanks for your time. And fingers crossed.
I retract everything I said in the last post. I downloaded the game again from scratch with no antivirus and it still got stuck on the last 2 files. Have done everything I can think of to finish the install and I’m just frakking sick of it. I downloaded the patch yesterday without incident and then played for a few hours. The next day I tried to play and it was stuffed again. Best game I’ve played, but I can’t get it to work and the support team are just morons. “Maybe your firewall just spontaneously started blocking it.” Yeah maybe the client is crap. Adios………
Hey Guys,
I wasn’t able to download and install or repair the game either for about 4 days, but after scrounging around forums for hours, I pieced different threads together regarding antivirus software. I tried disabling my Avast Free antivirus and after switching to Microsoft security essentials, still couldn’t patch the game or repair it. It would keep getting stuck with 6 files to go, or have a read/write error if I patched it.
So I totally uninstalled my antivirus software, which isn’t something you should ever have to do, and the game installed straight away and started without any problems. I then reinstalled the antivirus software.
I’m not going to claim this is your problem, but I tried absolutely everything I could or was suggested to do by support and nothing helped, except the above.
I just tried to start the game 5 mins ago and I keep getting the black screen and GW2 is not responding. So I’ll try the absence of the antivirus software to see if it works.
I finally worked out my problem. I forgot that I had created a system managed page file on the same HDD as the game because my screenshot folders were taking forever to load. That’s all it was.
Thx Man, I just checked the Local.dat file and the GW2 files and they all have their permissions stripped bare. And when I amend this by adding the appropriate privileges, then running the game, in admin of course, it wipes them all again.
So I guess this is why I’m getting the read error, No. 23 like everyone else. I should actually make a ticket, because I remember this happening at launch and they sorted it out I think. Well they must have, because I’ve been happily playing for the last few months.
Yeah, same here. It almost made it all the way, but when I woke up and checked it, it had the same connection error that I had before. And it won’t resume at all now. I can’t get it to work. I have no ideas left.
Even though the game runs beautifully when at it’s best and is one of the best experiences I’ve had with games, I have to agree with the condition of the fundamental UI framework. It seems like the game was made before the UI, which is just an exaggeration but fits the situation. And the support is minimal at best. Every problem I’ve had with the game, I’ve had to workout myself or wait until a patch is released to fix it.
An example of the UI shortcomings is in the launcher. Having to modify the game’s .exe by adding -repair to the “Start In” field in the properties is pretty sloppy, when there should just be a check box on the launcher.
I think the absence of an alert pop-up in the Guild leader UI, is completely their responsibility. It’s not as if you had a detailed User Manual to know this. I miss those thick user manuals that used to come with games. But this is the world in which we now live. Less for more.
I erased everything using CCleaner and started the installer again with admin privileges and I noticed that after the Install Game setup, it restarts using the new shortcut on the desktop which isn’t, by default, run with admin. So I stopped the download straight away and modified the shortcut’s properties and let it download.
After a couple of hours it had another error, but on starting it again, continued like it should. It’s still downloading but I haven’t had any other problems.
I also uninstalled GW1 and GeForce Experience, which I thought may pose a problem, so if you have either of those as well, they could also be the problem.
When the download has finished I’ll try to login and post the results. I too had the black screen after pressing play. This was the reason I started all of this in the first place, so I have my fingers crossed.
Everything else is working perfectly, I’m updating my LotRO client as well and I played a few different games on Steam just to make sure.
Well we’re not the only ones either by a long shot, there are over 10 thousand views in the Installation problem sticky. And I just tried again and got a Fatal Disc error on read.
My HDD is fine, it keeps spitting out a different error each time.
I think I’ll erase everything associated with GW2 and try and start from scratch again.
“It’s the only way to be sure” Hehe.
It’s not his firewall, I’m having the same problem. It’s not his drivers either, or heat, or any other dime store tech advice. There’s something wrong with the client. It may not effect everyone, because we don’t all have the same setups, but it was working 10 hours ago and nothing in my settings or PC has changed. Just going to have to wait until it works. I’m sure when enough people complain, it will be dealt with.
Yes, I’ve been having the same problem for hours. It was working after the patch yesterday even though when I logged in, the map was like a ghost town. But when I tried to play the next time, I kept getting a serious error. I tried repairing it and kept getting the same error. So I uninstalled the game and downloaded the client again, then installed it with admin privileges. But after a long download, it stopped with 168+ thousand files to go and couldn’t connect. And around and around it goes.
I’m not asking for extra PvP content, or mounts, or housing or anything that huge. All I ask is that I can change my character’s names. The hair style and make over kits are available in the cash shop. How hard is it to add rename?
Please.
I think a change of name service in the Black Lion Trading Company shop would be an improvement, because sometimes you will create a name out of impulse or need to test a character class and level the character to the point where you regret being so hasty in your decision and don’t want to have to make a new character just for a better name. Besides it’s a common service among most other games.
It’s not an emergency, but it is a suggestion none the less which would also increase Gem sales.
The fact that this game has no carrot on a stick is what makes it so appealing. The combat is fast and dynamic and feels more like an action title than the usual back and forward table tennis like all other MMO’s with the exception of AoC. And the lack of grouping or social interaction is a result of how soloing has been catered to. Most people completely rely on grouping in most MMO’s due to their inability to solo. And as far as end game goes, I don’t see how replaying as an alt even having explored the whole map is any different to repeating dungeon raids over and over for months at a time, just to get gear that mainly serves as a status symbol rather than an actual improvement to your gaming experience. Let’s face it, the whole PVP superiority complex, stems from nothing more than what used to be a very populated FPS Deathmatch mentallity which serves merely as a persistent adolescent pissing contest. The paradigm of online anonymity has created a new form of hubris so intensely saturated that has never before existed. If there were consequences to players who merely play to bolster their real life lack of self worth in the form of harassment and verbal abuse then PVP would be a much more enjoyable experience. Because these PVP l33t players who grind in what is no more than the old FPS deathmatch for their inferiority complexes and call it end game have completely infected and mutated the original meaning of the abbreviation R.P.G.
In closing, all I have to say apart from the above, is that this game is a great immersive and beautifully rendered setting in which to explore and enjoy. Playing a different class in this game is like playing a completely different game. Maybe you should try that, after all there’s no rush.
