Guide: WvW SD Control Build (Roaming)

This might be two months old, but I found it on Wolfineer’s site, and I think this build is great. A friend who has been running an SD burst build for a while (though I didn’t even know it until I really knew what it was) advised me to run goggles instead of elixir gun, and it has worked out great. I can totally see why someone would stick with EG, but the 10 vuln on toolbelt is great for the burst, and you still keep a stun break as the utility.

  • Is the price of transmutation essentially being tripled for players under level 80? If so, is there any way to make it easier to acquire them on these characters? (please don’t say map completion)
  • Will the WvW Armor Skins vendor stay with the wardrobe installation? How will skins that we purchase, or have purchased, be integrated into the wardrobe—It was seen that HoM skins said “Free to Apply”, will these skins earn a ’Free to Apply X times"?

Super Adventure Box Boombox Sound Bugged

I hadn’t noticed until recently, but whenever I put my Boombox away while playing a song the sound will keep on going. It’s only for me though, people around me can’t hear it. Is this happening to anyone else? Seems to have only happened after the most recent patch.

but no one knows who your other toons are and thats a kittening huge issue when it comes to confidence, trust, and expectations. and thats why i dont think account bound commander tags are currently viable.

Going off the assumption that all ‘big important good’ commander use a voice chat server, all you have to do is “Hey guys, this is my alt” there, done. The problem which you outlined it literally something that is solved in a matter of seconds and should not be a valid reason for not making commander tags account bound.

Questions:
1.) How important is it to see your squad members as a different color and always visible on your map like party?

I’m not sure if this is really necessary. It would just clutter the minimap up way too much. Changing the color of the name plates, like the party system does, would be nice though.

Questions:
2) I’ve always felt the best commander organization tool would be the ability to create events. Like drop a siege and the commander can set this is a build event then everyone gets Ui like build this flame ram 0/50 supply needed. Or Destroy this gate <show gate health bar>. Lets assume for this discussion there are no rewards to the events just a communication tool. Thoughts on commander created events?

I suppose this would be cool. As long as it doesn’t clutter things up, current events have the big orange circle and signs and things everywhere, please don’t make things go crazy.

3) A guild gating system would be clean but require all commanders to be in a fairly active guild is this a fair gating system?

It definitely seems fair, newcomers shouldn’t just try to become renown commanders without even being in a guild, it just doesn’t make sense. Having an active enough guild where it can purchase these new type of tags should mean that it’s qualified enough and came make smart decisions about who to give commander tags to.

If we added a system for squad management, what are the top 3 things you would want it to do? Examples: Show squad position, allow for orders to be sent to individual players, provide health status of all squad members, etc.

This is a much larger project, but getting a sense of what people would want it to do can help provide bounds for the work.

TOP 3 things:

  • Increase maximum squad size to 50
  • Commander has NO CHAT SUPPRESSION in squad chat
  • Increase radius of /supplyinfo (more of a general thing I suppose)

Other things:

  • Make it easier to join squads, many people don’t know they exist. Unfortunately I don’t have any suggestions on how to do this, you’d have to look to fellow peers.
  • Maybe make it so the chat somehow highlights the commander’s text, maybe a different color or bolded
  • Class icons- Very small (optional) HuD element which has the picture of the class icon and the number beside it of how many there are. I know this could lead to a lot of generalizations of classes, but knowing the availability of class specific skills (eg: tomes, portals, static fields) could help a lot.
  • Map markers need to be a bit more visible and useful.

How about no:
-Lieutenants, I just don’t see the necessity, commander tags are easy to come by, I know in the zergs I roll with there are at least 5 other commanders which I can easily pick out. I’ve seen many people suggest this, if someone could explain to my why it’s such a big deal that’d be helpful.

How would people feel if, instead, there were some additional unlocks you could get as a guild commander that only displayed to people in your guild? Maybe if you are in guild only mode on your tag you have some additional tools?

The system for guilds to upgrade for guild tags sounds very reasonable.

Would the commander system be functional enough with more markers, guild only tags, less suppression, better supplyinfo, and possibly additional marker shapes?

These proposed changes would incredible, but you must keep in mind, there is a never-ending list of ‘small’ changes (eg: larger squad size) that can be done to improve the system, but the ones you’ve listed here are extremely important. Can you elaborate by what you mean when you say “markers”. Is this the Blue-Diamondish Commander symbol (aka: tag, dorito)? If so, the more markers is highly welcomed, not sure if we really need more shapes. If it’s something else, I have to sadly admit I know not what you speak of (is it the ctrl-clicking on map?).

If they make small changes, then the Commander System passes from ‘ok’ to ‘mostly good’ and IT WILL NOT GET ATTENTION AGAIN until all other ‘ok-or-worse’ matters have been addressed.

I think you have it wrong. Should be more along the lines of: Commander System passes from ‘horrid’ to ‘acceptable’. I believe it’s understood that this system will always be able to improve and some sort of attention will always be placed on it. I believe this then goes back to long term vs short term changes. From my interpretations of your posts, your saying you’d like a big change to come much further into the future. I don’t agree with you in this sense and feel quick changes which can be released faster are better, because, believe it or not, WvW is still being played everyday.

Seems like people really enjoy answering questions so I’ll throw out a few more.

How big do you expect a squad to be?

  • I’d say it needs to be at least 45, but to get anyone in it’ll need some more utility which will understandably take very long to develop.

What kind of content is a PvE commander most useful?

  • (some) World Events, Tequatl, Guild Missions, Champ Train, Guild Events

Is money a good enough gate for commander tags?

  • Depends on if a distinction will be made for Pve and WvW commanders.
    PvE: Yea, sure.
    WvW: Not at all. There needs to be a minimum rank (but not based on buying with Wxp trait points!) Maybe even a BoH requirement, but that’s not as important.

So many great suggestions here, I just want to show my support for many of them.
Great Ideas (imo):

  • Varying visibility for tag
  • Changes to tag depending on WvW Rank (not dependent on Rank though, we need our PvE doritos!
  • Larger supply count radius
  • Increase in squad size and increased usefulness of squad system (buff sounds cool)
  • Squads post-able in LFG
  • TURN OFF THE VISIBILITY OF THE BUFF TO ENEMIES (srsly, even I’m guilty of trying to get people to focus them down)
    Bad Ideas (imo):
  • Power to remove other peep’s land claims
  • Large map shout-out that overwhelms the screen
  • Players voting on allowing someone to tag up or not (large guilds shutting out others)
  • Being only ones allowed to throw down siege
  • PvE Teleport to commander
    Iffy ideas, can’t really make up mind on them:
  • Account-Bound Commander Tag: I don’t know why I feel this is odd. I have a tag on a toon but rarely use it because I also do WvW on other toons (love the account bound WxP upcoming change btw!!!!) but it just feels weird. Forget I said anything.
  • Guild Only Tag: Again, just feels weird. If people see you running around with a group they’ll join you, visible or not visible tag. (By this I mean the chance to buy a tag solely for guildmates to see, option to flip between this and original would be nice)

2) Poison Dart “volley” This skill is currently bugged and does not hit your target with kittens as the hint states, it often goes off to the side and hits nothing. Making this skill unreliable. The damage is underwhelming for its CD, shorten the CD to 5s.

Oh my gawd yes! I absolutely hate that skill, I have to be in melee range for it to do anything! I’ll be lucky to get a single hit in at max range. I can’t really comment on anything else since I just run around spamming nades, and not too often I might add.

How about this ? Remove the last skill “Return”, replace it with “Pause.” And to unequip the flute: Switch Weapon button. I think my idea is perfect.

I really love this idea. The flute was once really fun to play, but sadly, it has lost most of it’s capabilities with the recent patch. If something isn’t changed to allow easier repetition of notes, I’d seriously like a refund-as many others apparently do too.

This does certainly sound like a large problem. The guild I’m in was hardly able to complete it when they were fully visible [at least they were for me] and a vent server. I personally don’t know much about WvW, I’ve only been in there twice with my guild, both times I had no idea what I was doing. I hit 80 just about a week ago, on my first character, newbie here, and Orr has been quite boring to me. I’ve been told that the karma armor sold in Orr was just about the best one could get, but I was never told how impossible it would be to get the vendor to pop-up! This idea sounds like it’ll free up some of the altars to allow to vendors to show up, which I’m all for. I’ve been just map/guild spamming whenever I want to try to clear an altar, but the most I’ve ever been able to get is around 10 people, which ended up failing after a long walk/fight.
