See Drintar I disagree. Not that you should be able to use the auto attack for cheating the game, but I fail to see the point of using it at all. Why have this in the game? Why have the auto target feature? Why have a pet that I can’t turn off, if not for such game play. Ok so it’s there, what limitations are there for using it? Yes overnight is an exaggeration, but is an hour or two acceptable? 15 minutes? and how do you define away from keyboard. You can use these features while sitting at the keyboard and just hitting the “f” key. Is that ok?
The auto-attack key will make your character automatically use a skill when it is available. Not to attack some mob that is not on your screen when it attacks you. It’s not an auto-response button. This automates casting something continually (heals, buffs make common sense!). As for the Ranger class, well I still do not know why the pet CANNOT be turned off from combat, so it will auto-attack anything that attacks you (unless you tell it to be a kitten).
To me this is playing the game for you, whether you are at the keyboard or not. So my question still stands, if they did not want you to use the automated abilities of the game, why have it? If they do, what are the limits? As Drintar claims, all MMO’s since UO don’t have this, why does GW2?
@ Mulch: Thanks for the info, and the official point of view on this matter. Any chance you might have the link to that thread available?
@jebidiah Pretty sure I mentioned in one of my previous posts that I was in fact not trying to defend this game play, or bots in any manner. I am only trying to figure out 1) why they added these features, yet only want them used in certain manners, 2) what those manners of use specifically are.
because you have automated gameplay. your character is not being controlled by you.
they made auto attacks to help you in the heat of the moment and maybe save some button mashing while you’re sitting at your keyboard. Not so that the game would auto play without input from a person actively playing.
doesn’t matter to me how you try to justify it to yourself. i call it griefing, or an exploit or botting. either way, it isnt they way they meant the game to be played.
Doesn’t seem to me to be an exploit when you are only using the features they built into the game. If they did not want this to happen, or people to be able to use these features, then why did they build in the auto-attack and auto-target abilities? For that matter the automatic pet use for the Ranger. Seems to me they built in the automation for the player to benefit from, not exploit.
As for the game kicking a person after so much time when using these “features” I do not know personally. I do not condone this game play, nor defend it, nor will I “test” the time frame for doing this.
How can they claim botting if you are just using the in game mechanics? There is no 3rd party program being used…
yeah haven’t tested it myself for that amount of time, but I have yet to be kicked for being idle. If this is so then never mind, they got it covered.
Wondering if this is considered legal or illegal (banning) activity?
On Ranger with a trap set to auto-attack with the auto-target option set, while sitting at a DE that props every 30 minutes or so, and never logging out or swapping characters. By doing this a person could effectively mine exp, karma, and gold all day WITHOUT any bot programs. Using all options built into the game, and that fact that the game does not seem to kick idle players.
It would seem like a waste of time for someone that actually was playing the game, but whats to stop a person from doing this when at school, work, or sleeping?
This has been suggested many times, by many people. No such thing as a permanent stow for the ranger. Even though every other class can play without interference from their pets. We are stuck with our pet constantly in the way. So far I have not seen anywhere on these forums or otherwise that this is working as anything but intended. Get used to it…
Been fighting this boss daily for about 2 weeks and I have streamlined my attack with my ranger. Contrary to alot of posts above I STAY on the bridge, send my pet in to attack the boss, and kill adds with my ranged attacks. I can always dodge back out of range of the AOE, and dart in to attack the boss when the adds are down. I rotate my pets (bears both) as needed, heal when needed, pick up others WHEN I CAN.
Problem with this battle is that it is too hard to rez someone back from the dead in this battle. You rarely have time to get a downed person up. So you wind up with a ton of people dead just watching the fight. I usually have to tell new people not to spam “help” but just goto rez pad. The only place you stand a decent chance of getting a rez is on the bridge. If they change anything it should be to have a rez pad closer to the reactor for those who need to run back a tons of times.
The other problem here is that, if you die alot by the end of the battle your armor is toast. I have started fighting it naked, or keep a cheap set to throw away after the fight.
BTW I have fought and killed this boss SOLO using this technique, but it is a long fight!
Are these bosses set to spawn at regular times? IE: 8pm EST every night. I too have farmed some of the lower area bosses, they don’t spawn based on time, they seem to spawn with the right conditions in place (enough of a local population), and then most require a chain of events prior to it taking place. Shaman for instance is the end of a chain, seems to happen once an hour, but not set to any exact time loop. I have never seen the chain start when standing by the start area alone…
Seems like the best way to approach this would be to form a large group, then have some call out each stop to the group, go to the location, trigger the event, rinse/repeat.
Please create a toggle mode for “pets off”, which will keep a pet from becoming active when the Ranger takes damage, or when entering combat. Right now a “stowed” pet will automatically become active when either of these two thing occur. All other professions have the option to not use a “pet” when in combat, Rangers do not.
Yes I do know the value of the Ranger’s pet, yes I do want to use my pets in combat, would just like the option on them.

I believe it only shows the 2 crafts you are active in, not all crafts you have put time into. Not sure if it shows all recipes however, didn’t think to check that.
Thing is the other “pet” classes have the ability to “stow” their pets until needed. What I mean is they have the ability to call the pets and banish them whenever they want. the ranger on the other hand is effectively tied to the pet being there whenever they take damage or are in combat. there are points in the game where this is not preferable in my mind, namely one area where you must do a jumping puzzle around mobs. the pet constantly aggro’s the mobs and pulls you into combat, not to mention being in the way while jumping.
Rangers do too! omg I am going to say it AGAIN the pet bar cosists of 1..2..3..4.. 5 this is the one you want and 6 being the pet icon.. click #5 and VOILA! you are now a ranger without a pet.
Only works until you TAKE DAMAGE OR ENTER COMBAT, then bam! pet is back out. Other classes have the option to do both WITHOUT A PET (pet = clone, turret, or summoned item) . I understand that it is important to use a pet as a ranger, but must I be forced to always have it out during these times when I may not want it out?
BTW sorry if my point is not the same as the OP, but my thread go shoved into this one, so now I am arguing my point here as well. >8-\

So what if you have points invested in more than 2 crafting disciplines, with the goal of advancing them all to 400? Not gonna be everyone’s goal, but might be possible. So you advance 2 to 400, want to see which one to start next. Or if you happen to need to craft something in one profession you are not currently using, and you want to see quickly if you can make the item. The only way to do that ATM is to go to crafting specialist and see how much it will cost to switch. Not really too difficult, but there should be a quick, easy way for them to provide this info in the interface.

Personally I have no problem with having a pet, but there needs to be a way to “put it up” for an extended time frame if need be. Not asking for it to be removed, not asking for a buff or reward for stowing it, just want to be able to put it away for an extended amount of time. Simple.
Can’t agree more with you, not only for the incredible stupidity of having the pet always in front of me when doing those jumping skill challenges. Constantly having to stow it, then it pop back up, and the stow being on a cool-down ??? WHY?

I believe it only shows your account progress as a whole ATM. Unless I read that wrong.

We need a method for seeing what crafting level each individual character has in each crafting skill. Only method I have seen so far is to go to each crafting agent and see how much it costs to switch crafting professions/divide the cost by 10. If this is in place someone please enlighten me! TIA
