Hm, think I fixed it with a combination of a driver rollback, turning shadows from ultra down to high and putting back on vsync. Disregard above message for now. Seems odd that I would have to do that on a GTX 1080 but as long as it plays well its fine.

Hi, I just upgraded from a GTX 680 to a GTX 1080 on win7.

I have run GW2 flawlessly for years on the 680 but with the 1080, about 5-30 seconds after I load the game the GPU fans instantly shoot to 100% and both screens black out and the sound starts looping.

I have to hold the power button on the pc to get anywhere from that point onward.

I have another friend who has the same card (EVGA GTX 1080 FTW) and is having the exact same problem with GW2 and GW2 only. I didn’t search the entire help forum for this topic but I am wondering if anyone else is having this problem with the 1080 and if there is a known issue or fix to it.

I know the usual first answer is try changing your graphics driver. My friend has already tried several versions with no success and since I am getting the exact same crash I am assuming it is not a driver related issue, or if it is, all the driver versions are effected.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

So people would rather have 3-10+ thieves sitting in stealth (truly constant stealth like traditional MMO stealth) camping somewhere in WvW and all backstabbing at the same time out of nowhere than have the thief be able to stealth while in combat but be able to see the thief coming and prepare for them?

With traditional MMO stealth this is exactly what would happen. I remember in DAoC 20-50 stealthers all camping one choke point waiting for some sucker/group to come along and be their next gank target. At least here you can see the thief coming from a distance and prep for a fight.

Personally that would kitten me off a lot more than the current system.

PS: As a thief I would fee a lot safer in WvW with traditional MMO stealth, just sayin.

That’s not a bad idea (only allowing 1 HS through the combo field). I am not sure that would be possible without revamping much of the combo field engine, and it would certainly not stop people whining about stealth. However it would make d/p vs d/p thief fights much less tedious and silly :P

I don’t usually make forum posts but after reading this whole thread and its stupidity I feel I need to throw in my two cents as well.

First off, I am a D/P solo roaming thief who does pretty much nothing but WvW. I don’t claim to be a god tier player or any of that crap. I die to or at least bounce off truly good players all the time (bounce off as in I can’t kill them but I won’t let them kill me) and usually get laughed at over it.

There are two different issues here as I see it. Stealth use in combat, and stealth as an escape mechanism. I think the latter is what most people are really kittened about; the ability to reset a fight at will.

While I can see the issues with being able to reset a fight at will, many classes have this ability if played well. Without the ability to do so, roaming in WvW would be nearly impossible. One can not be a very good scout and shadow a zerg if there is no means to escape from the zerg should they decide to turn around and kill you. Being slippery is part of what makes a thief a thief.

Using stealth in combat is a requirement for any dagger mainhand build. All the people whining and saying remove the HS/BP combo, well theres a problem with that. D/P is a DAGGER mainhand build and all dagger builds need a built in way to stealth. Without this it would not be possible for the build to use its primary attack without popping cooldowns.

It is annoying for inexperienced players, but any good player will hit a stealthed thief in combat pretty easily. It is predictable where they will be at most times of a fight. For instance if the thief has just BP/HSed and has full life, chances are they are running in a straight line from where they stealthed, to you. If they are low on life chances are they are running twords the nearest LoS break (behind that cliff, rock, etc).

Now, personally I feel that D/P is a pretty cheesy build, but not for reasons of “perma stealth” which isnt even perma anymore since they nerfed it. When it was truly perma stealth it was extremely OP and I am very glad they removed that ability. No, the reason I feel D/P is cheesy and also the reason I switched to it from playing D/D is the constant blind spam. Blind shuts down almost all melee classes. I can kill wars, guards, etc very easily without even really needing to stealth, I just stand in the black powder and auto attack, HS out when its nearing its end backstab and repeat.

In such fights I am fully visible for 90%+ of the fight but still can’t really even be touched. The only time I will utalize the “perma stealth” is vs another thief to avoid the opening burst, or to escape from a zerg or reset a losing battle. I can see why this angers people, but again without it, scouting/roaming would be dead in WvW.

The other very OP thing about D/P is the 3 skill, Shadow Shot. This is one of the best chase skills in the game. It’s ranged, it blinds, and it teleports you instantly then dagger strikes. I kill more people with shadow shot than I do with backstab and it makes the D/P set not only exceptionally good at evasion but exceptionally good at chase. If people want to see D/P go away, start yelling for a blind nerf, D/P without blind is cannon fodder.

With all of that being said I think D/P is also pretty ok in WvW. Yes it is cheesy, so are a lot of other classes and builds out there. If it goes away thiefs will adapt and still kill people, and horrible players like the OP will still come on the forums and yell for more thief nerfs.

Hm two people from SBI. I am on DH and we are fighting you guys this week. Perhaps its a problem with the server we are all using for wvw or something.

Title pretty much says it all. Since the patch when I go into WvW I get a lot of 1-2 sec lag spikes (which never usually happens) and within about 10-15 min of playing the server just kicks me out entirely (which has never happened before). I can stay connected to the PvE part of the game just fine but when I go into WvW it’s nothing but problems.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Although, why does revealed debuff have to be the same duration even if you do have it for dropping stealth naturally as it is for attacking? I would be able to prefer something like 3s revealed for attacking with 1.5s revealed for natural drop.

A: Devs are lazy.
B: They would screw that up entirely and break 5 more stealth related things in the process.

If they had done what they were going to do originally and just make revealed apply every time you leave stealth it would have completely fixed the chain stealth problem.

I don’t think making it a 2 step would fix the CnD looping at all. They would just turn away from whoever they were attacking and backstab into the air to reset things, unless you made it stay on backstab until you hit something.

If you made it stay on backstab for longer than stealth lasts then people could backstab out of stealth. So even if it didn’t reset you would give them the ability to non stealth backstab every CnD then instantly restealth due to not having attacked before stealth wore off lol.

Hello Sovngarde. Thief is squishy. You have to use the classes evasion to deal with large packs of mobs in PvE.

The best way I have found to do this against PvE mobs in large packs is use death blossom with snare and kiting. Later on you can get untouchable which leaves caltrops whenever you evade, they did get nerfed last patch but untouchable’s radius got increased I believe.

Anyways what I always did when leveling was run around and gather up a mass of like 3-5+ mobs, circle kite them with snare so they ended up in a ball then start death blossoming over the group back and forth mixing in evade for more snare and condition damage and just repeat that til everything fell over.

This tactic works excellent against non ranged mobs, if you get a pack of ranged mobs shooting at you try LoSing them around something or just use shadow refuge and try to reset the fight. I always found ranged mobs in numbers difficult to deal with personally, perhaps someone else can offer a good strategy on those.

As for the QQing, its mostly caused because thief has been nerfed pretty much every patch in the game and people are sick of it by now. Also, the last patch broke a lot of things for us so there has been extra whining since then lol.

You can still permastealth, you just get punished more for attacking from it, if you know what you are doing this shouldn’t really effect you that much in PvP, just like decent permastealth thieves could backstab and buy a few sec of time before going back to permastealth to heal pre patch.

I still don’t understand why people refer to chaining CnD as permastealth when it’s no where near permanent and requires constantly hitting a target every 4 seconds without fail and without running out of initiative to achieve… not to mention this won’t actually kill anyone who is slightly competent.

I don’t know either really that’s just what I always heard it called lol.

And again the point really comes down to the fact that many people complain that backstabs damage is far too high, when there are plenty of skills that are both easier to land and more damage, the third chain in axe auto attack is a prime example, higher skill damage coefficient, no positional requirements, no cooldown requirements and yet its Backstab that is seen as the deadlier skill.

What’s funny is backstab doesn’t even one shot decent players. About the only people you can kill with a steal/cnd/backstab combo are A: Upscales in WvW, B: Noobs in 100% berserker gear, C: People at < 50% health.

If you use the 100% burst build where you blow all 5 of your CD’s to add to backstab damage you can kill more people with it, but then you are about worthless for the next 45+ seconds and have now 4 sec of revealed and no way to live.

Its just all the horribad people in 100% zerker gear going omg why am I getting one shot when I have no HP and Armor

I thought of this myself and tested it. Since the immobilize is gone it SHOULD pull (it should have pulled even with the immobilize tbh), but it still doesn’t, it just freezes them at range.

I am going to just keep running my CnD/BS build. (For WvW)

The extra sec on revealed sucks but wont severely effect my ability to play and I never permastealth lol. What does effect it is the freaking broken hidden killer bug lol.

That being said I would have much preferred they keep it at 3 sec and do what they originally said they were going to do :/

Currently running 10/30/15/15/0 with Withdraw, Roll for Init, SR, Scorp Wire, and Bask Venom.

I will probably lose some kills due to not being able to land a 2nd backstab faster but oh well still gets the job done against plenty of people in WvW.
