The randomness is the drawback for spawning a clone with #2, something the thief doesn’t do. But I have to agree, I’ve died a lot due to this as well :-s
Maybe if we could at least point into the general direction of the port, that would be helpful.
Thanks for the feedback, it’s very reassuring.
I’m a bit confused about your traits though. I’m very worried about survival, so my first instinct would be to at least put some points into the Vitality/Toughness lines, probably taken from the Power-line (’cause we need Deceptive Evasion and Illusionary Persona).
Agent Noun, your build sounds very promising, though I think I’d skip the Domination traits and i.e. use the reduced dmg per illusion trait. Also, I’m wondering if Master of Misdirection (confusion damage would be quite low in dungeon situations, esp. with this build?) and Elasticity (Extra bounce only for Mirror Blade seems like a waste, esp. because I plan to utilize staff’s chaos armor and chaos storm in offhand) are worth it.
Obviously you’re more experienced than me with this build though, so I’ll definitely try some variation of it :-)
I’m very happy to hear that Melee Mesmers seem possible and are even used by some people :-)
So, I’ve decided that I want to try out Melee Mesmers in Explorable Mode Dungeons.
I simply get bored 234’ing GS in range all the time.
Does anyone have experience with this and would like to share?
Obviously I’d use 1h sword and either sword of pistol offhand, not sure yet (though sword sounds nice due to extra block and the fact that one single trait lowers the CDs of both main and offhand). Additionally I’ll try to stack defensive stats and traits as much as possible and roll/evade/distortion/block etc.
What I’m wondering though is if it’s even possible to survive in explo mode as a mesmer in melee? I know even guardians and warriors struggle sometimes, and I fear I’d simply get one-shotted if something happens to scratch me once, be it a boss hit, some aura of the boss, whatever.
I’ve watch some videos, and you know what those “melee” mesmers do? Jump in, sword#2, eat a hit -> instant down, switch to GS, spend rest of the fight in range.
What I’d rather like to see is ie. open with staff chaos storm, jump in with sword#3, blow CDs, switch to staff, chaos armor, survive somehow (maybe even with evade-clones), switch back to sword, etc. You know the drill.
So, is this possible? Or would you just say it’s pointless to try melee in explorable modes? If it’s possible, does anyone have an idea on how much defense (Toughness+Vitality) stats one would approximately need? Ofc I won’t get enough def stats to tank multiple hits, but I need enough time to react and roll out / use distortion.
Thanks :-)

Kobra, obviously we on Gandara would invite every competent player to our server, needless to say :-p
Ashanae, I’m sorry you didn’t like Gandara. There are of course always trolls and black sheep, on every server. But overall I feel the community on Gandara is quite mature and troll-free. Obviously it’s hard to “control” PuGs without commanders and guilds, and the reward system (like, you get tons of stuff for chain-capping, but not quite as much for defending) doesn’t help. But that doesn’t mean that Gandara people are unfriendly. They just don’t have proper leadership. For example, the moment our famous commander Dairdel appears in WvW, everyone instantly listens and pays attentions and contributes.
I will give melee swords another try, though I still have doubts. But please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that mesmers are weak in any way – maybe they are, but that’s not my primary concern. I’m just saying that I feel I can do superior damage/support by just doing a boring rotation than I can while actually paying attention and do “creative” stuff.
Xyrm, I’d agree with 2-5 being situational if … you know, this was the case. The GS for example is exactly the opposite. Except for 5, I could basically just spam every other button on cooldown without thinking and fare very well. One example of what I’d like to see is the staff combo of 5-2 (for chaos armor). It’s just a small example, but here I actually have to align the cooldowns and use the spells exactly when I need to. I can’t just spam them ’cause “why not”.
Weapon swaps are the things that I’m looking into at the moment, but I don’t see that many synergy points. Confusion+Sword2, like Sabbathius said, is one good idea. GS+melee is a bit strange because I feel that I could do more damage just sticking in GS than with swapping to melee, use 3→2, jump out (otherwise death), wait for swap-cooldown(!), then swap back to GS.
Yea, I probably expect an unreasonable amount of “depth”, but if we pool our ideas, maybe someone (even other than me g) might benefit from the inspiration.
Any further suggestions? :-)
So, from the moment I heard about the mesmer, I knew I had to play one. The mesmer’s specialization in shutting down foes and doing “indirect” damage (as I knew from GW1) appealed to me. In in PvP, it’s wonderful.
But in PvE, I can’t seem to find an interesting playstyle. For example, I tried the GS. Guess what I do? Basically: 234-234-234-F1-“oh only single target mob”-24-24-24-F1 ….
Then I tried the staff: 523-23-“oh mob has lots of conditions from group mates already”-53-3-“ahh I’m attacked”-4-53-3 ….
Scepter is lackluster because those clones are worthless and Shatters don’t recharge quickly enough to make use of them. Melee sword is out of question because you’ll be evading and jumping too much to actually do damage.
Well, that’s my assessment. Utility skills are great, but I can’t seem to find a weapon(-combination) that isn’t … plainly boring.
Does anyone have the same feeling, or have I missed some complexity that could make those weapons more interesting to play? An idea might be focussing on crit/cond-dmg, and switch between staff chaos storm and off-pistol phantasm to quickly stack bleeding/confusion stacks. That would seem interesting, but I’m worried that the resulting dps/support would be worse than simply spamming GS stuff (thereby stacking might on group).
Any ideas/suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
That’s exactly right.
Gandara was once a very powerful server (like top5 iirc), but the free server transfers almost completely broke us, like many other servers.
You can clearly see Neandramathal’s point in the queue-size screenshot posted by ANet (https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/6487/Gandara.PNG). Since we were ranked high, we constantly got matched with mass-population servers like Riverside and Desolation. We fought Desolation like half of the time in the first two weeks. We were many, they were more.
Of course, most major guilds and alliances moved on to Desolation and co., gifting them their wonderful queues, while leaving desperately fighting “loyal” players behind. We are active and decent, but lack the organization of big guilds to reach to our potential. Yesterday night was the same, we had a big zerg, but no idea where to go. 4 people had ideas of what to do, neither of them bad. Whom to follow? At last, one commander came online, and … went straight into the jumping puzzle.
So yeah, I think we have the potential to be ranked better, and are now playing against servers that are even more struggling than we are (I here UW has lags too…), but we’re far from “being miles ahead”. That’s something that will be true in the future ;-)
‘disrupting supplies, what wvw has become’
i do not know what to say to that. did you think the other worlds would simply LET you endlessly supply Stonemist?
I’m afraid you missed the point. Of course the enemy should not simply “let” you supply SM. In this case, however, it’s clear that the players involved abused a mistake on ANet’s part for their own benefit. World transfers are not supposed to be that cheap (=free) and easy, it’s just that they haven’t implemented the fees yet. Also, they (apparently) haven’t thought about the possibility of enemy infiltration like this.
Whatever the case, the problem here is that there is nothing one can do about it. In real life, you would just “disable” the guy, but in this game, there is no friendly fire.
It’s of course not specifically forbidden to do this, but it’s also very surely not intended in this game, so, at best, the actions of those players are a sign of very very bad sportsmanship. And, like in every game, people with bad sportsmanship should be known. Also, ANet will read this thread and find a solution for this problem.
Camm,
My guild is a very small, but we’re active and quite experienced in multiple pvp-oriented games. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to merge into your guild since we would like to retain our sovereignity, but it would be an honor to coordinate our efforts with yours. If you would like to start a WvWvW alliance in Gandara, count us in. Anyway, if you have time (seeing that you aren’t here tonight), please /w me @ JiaYow and let’s see how we can work together.
How about the ability to toggle it off so I don’t have people following me all the kitten time? Nothing like a cross-realm spy knowing EXACTLY where the commanders are on the battlefield…
I’m sorry this is off topic, but are you seriously saying that commanders can’t toggle their icon off? I mean, really?
Actually, I’m very happy that you’re doing this. My guild was wondering why noone did it, but we ourselves are far, far too small to make any kind of impact. So thanks :-)
From what I’m seeing, Gandara players are actually quite decent, but we lack proper organization because most guilds don’t communicate with each other (Server subforums please?).
Last night we ran around with one of our few commanders (actually the only commander I’ve seen yet) and capped lots of stuff with a small strike team, only to be zergpwned by hordes of French and Spanish over and over again. Imagine what we could do with constant proper organization!
Unfortunately, we simply lack the manpower to stand against those mindleskittenazergs, especially at night, but when word spreads, maybe some nightguilds will transfer to us :-)
