I agree.
GW1 had awesome tonics but were a totally different sort.
You could actually use them in combat too. Most of them at least. Not sure about some of the more obscure non-humanoid ones.
I have a Prince Rurick tonic that I like to use in combat. I would even equip the Ascalon flame sword to complete the look. It was a lot of fun.
Also, the tonic lasted an hour and you could always reapply it whenever you wanted however, when you zoned from one area to the next it would wear off.
Personally, in GW2, tonics should not really be replacing armor skins in any way. Especially since there is a built in wardrobe feature. If this keeps up, we’ll only be getting more of these tonics which will ultimately lead to them taking up more and more bag space.
Tonics are a quick and lazy way of producing more appearance options for your character. If the game isn’t doing so well, I would guess that ‘quick and lazy’ will become the trend.
I was wondering after the HoT aftermath and the damage it did to the game and player population, will Anet have the strength to forget HoT and move on?
What went wrong with HoT, IMHO, and should never be repeated:
01. Pricing the expansion as the full game for players already owning the original game
02. DLC worth of new content, not worthy of expansion name
03. Rushed and short story mode, with a really underwhelming final battle design.
04. Questionable map design, not the beauty of HoT maps, just usability. Minimap system is not enough for HoT layout.
05. Lack of new character slot for the new profession (remedied after an outcry from players).
06. Killing the casualness of the original Guild Wars 2 in more than one way and thus making maps either extremely hard or right down impossible for solo completion.
07. Nerfing the older content, all in hope player base will be forced to buy into deeply flawed new one.
08. Essentially killing off PvP with tying it to the expansion.
09. Nearly destroying WvW which survival is still up in the air.
10. etc.
I completely agree with all of the above.
I haven’t purchased HoT and it is most likely that I never will because of these reasons.
Also, the game in general seems rather dead to me and completely boring. Not to mention the GW2 community, who claim to be helpful and friendly, are actually quite the opposite when it comes down to it.
Lastly, most players only hang around Lions Arch doing fractals or the occasional world boss for their free trash loot.
No effort; no challenge.
Oh well, I can always take my money elsewhere…like Amazon.com
If Anet only wants to have something in their store for a very short limited time, that is their choice.
Lake Doric.
Let’s just say failing the vast majority of events and having an empty map isnt fun.
The OP has a point.
I am also having trouble completing events around the maps because no one is around. Even the ones I can complete solo aren’t fun because the world feels empty.
However, like I mentioned before in other posts, Lions Arch has tons of people just hanging around.
For whatever reason, not many people are leveling anymore and most of the established player-base only do fractals so there is little point to leave Lions Arch except to spend the 5 minutes doing daily quests. Pointless.
Game is no fun.
Utterly boring.
The problem is: every class in GW2 basically the same.
There is a lack of character variation because game companies try so hard to balance all characters to be exactly the same. It is even worse in Guild Wars 2 because there are no dedicated healers or tanks or dps. Every in-game character is all of those things which make them all basically the same.
Ages ago, when I played other mmo’s, there was a lot more distinction from one class to the next:
[]A Cleric/Priest was ‘only’ good at healing and sucked at dps and tanking was out of the question.
[]A Warrior/Fighter was tough as stones but had very little dps and had no magic at all in order to cast healing spells.
[]A Rogue/Thief excelled only at dps and could typically one-shot an unsuspecting player or mob. The thief was very fragile though and great care and cunning was required to play one.
So, I think you get the point.
The point being, every class in GW2 is basically ‘exactly’ the same.
Everyone can cast magic spells.
Everyone has the capacity to do tons of dps.
And even some non-traditional classes are able to tank a boss…not that ‘tanks’ actually exist in this game, because they don’t.
There is one class in GW2…it is the DPS/Healer.
If anyone reading this has ever played vanilla wow then you know exactly where I am coming from. Back then, if a rogue in stealth would one-shot me, I expected that to happen. It was part of the game. However, a rogue could never heal a dungeon party or raid. There were definitive ‘positives and negatives’ to every class.
Unless classes get some real distinction from one another, this game is going to always feel very bland and boring.
Is it common to have too few players around to down this guy?
It is a absolute slaughter for 15 minutes or so then he flies away.
So, maybe the realm I am on [Kaineng] is just a dead one?
Not sure, however, I always see tons of people in Lions Arch every time I pop over to put things in the bank.
Oh? I thought the specializations all had a synergy with one another which was build on your own particular play-style. That is how I see it anyways:) But I do not have HoT so I never tasted the elite specialization. Oh well.
So, from what you are saying, does everyone with HoT use the elite specialization over the others?
Thanks for your feedback:)
Since PvP is somewhat balanced (unless something major changed), can people without the HoT expansion still competitively do PvP?
Also, as a returning player, is PvP still a popular thing?
No mounts … ever. This is Guild Wars…not Club Med.
There are plenty of mounts in World of Warcraft. So, if that is your fancy, go there.
Who is Jinanth?
Did you mean to spell Jinath?
Um, ok. Is that even an official forum?
It doesn’t look as if it has anything to do with Arenanet.
If so, where?
It would be a good thing since it appears to me that a lot of people are still playing.
I haven’t played GW2 in years but still continuously play GW1.
Would it be worth returning to GW2 after all this time?
Most current and veteran players have already spent a chunk of cash on the game since release and on gem store purchases during the last couple years which means that not a lot of money is currently being directed towards Anet’s pocket.
However, if Anet can get a large influx of new players who are adamant about playing GW2 for the next couple years or so and if those NEW players make regular purchases from the gem store, then Anet has a whole new positive cash flow into their company.
Anet is counting on the NEW players which is probably why they are trying to lure more of them in by offering the core game for free with the expansion.
I’m not saying Anet doesn’t care about the existing player base but they already have our money so why should they care?
They want other people’s money now which is why the HoT expansion is marketed towards new buyers.

so you’re telling me to accept they get a free game for which i paid 60 euros. yeah… really makes sense. that’s a lot of money, guys
You didn’t pay 60 euros for nothing. You had access to the game for potentially much longer than “they” did.
Time played should not even be a consideration. The game has been available to everyone for the last three years. If people decided not to purchase it until now, that is their loss. They still had that option ever since GW2 originally released.
Why should they get the core game free just for being a new buyer?
Well hey, I know how the market works and anything Anet can do to bring in more players helps their bottom line. plus, the game is dying and this is probably just a marketing attempt to try and save it.
Cheers!
The Mad King pops in with this pun for the thread:
A Monumental announcement is approaching “soon”
There is a infamous “soon” again…….but thanks for update.
Since “Mad King” made a joke about it…..I’m guessing Halloween? or is this some cruel, sick joke? (The Mad King does have a nasty sense of humor you know.)
Well my infamous “soon” is pretty good
Mad King joke because I was talking to a coworker that is really good with puns, and we were talking about the Mad King… put them together and this update came with a pun.
Funny. I assumed the Mad King reference meant that the fix might come out sometime around the end of October. Either way, I’ve already moved on. Have fun ppl.
Maybe they will make it so you have to buy the HoT expansion to regain access to Hall of Monuments?
I doubt it but who knows?

So let me get this straight, even though I bought GW2 all those years back; I need to buy it again if I wan’t to make any progress. I’ve honestly stopped playing in the first place because once you reach max level and get all the achievements you wanted there was nothing to do, I’m not buying a second copy of the game just to get back into this; without feeling like I’m missing out on a ton of content. I was actually looking into the game today to try and get my friends to play GW2, because I remembered it being a great MMO; and we were trying to think of games to play, just to see that they were no longer able to just buy Guild Wars 2 on it’s own.
It’s really messed up, paying full price when the game was still young, and not getting as much content as paying full price now; I guess I won’t be getting back into the game, and we’ll just play Terraria instead; as Anet clearly doesn’t want us old members back.
Us normal gamers are not made of money you know; and the reason we bought the game in the first place as we thought we were going into a game where you get all the actual playing content for just the price of the game.
Now to suddenly force people to buy both the game and the expansion if they even want to play in the first place; that’s just rude.
The problem you have with what you said is your assumption that you are buying the core game again.
You are not.
This has been stated ad nauseam in this thread.
You ARE paying for the core game again however you are not receiving another core game account or activation code for doing so. Only NEW players will get the core game for free. Clearly Anet has blinded all common sense from you people who think that you’re not paying for the core game again through this marketing scandal. Nothing is for free in this world.
The way this works is like this:
The core game is probably worth $15.00
The expansion is probably only worth about $35.00
But, Anet wants to make $50.00 per HoT expansion sale so what can they do?
They bundle it together and force existing players who already own the core game to fork over an additional $15.00 just to get an expansion pack for a core game they already own.
Wake up and smell the coffee people.
I think the general consensus is,
“Yes, we understand these things take time and yes we’re happy to wait. BUT. The lack of communication throughout this has been annoying and fuel these fires far more than it needed to”
The main issue is that people ignore the communication that actually happens.
Do you mean like the “We’re close, seriously!” comment over a month back?
happy I don’t have to wait for my hom rewards, decided not to get HoT and play some of the better mmos out there lol
So you are giving up playing MMOs then?
GW2 isn’t that great imo.
Ignore the issue long enough and it will go away…right?
Does anybody know when the next patch will be released? Hopefully this will be fixed by then!
When does HoT release? Maybe by then.

New money vs. Old money.

I’m not saying Anet doesn’t care about the existing player base but they already have our money so why should they care?
They want other people’s money now.
Go and read what they did fix for today. Clearly that was more important.
Let this be a reminder to you how much Anet appreciates everyone who purchased and played GW1.
Do you believe everything people tell you?

Stop making this confusing, only Gwen can’t be play alone…
[/quote]
So ok, Guild Wars Eye of the North required ‘a’ guild wars campaign. Sorry for the confusion. Regardless, my point stands. That expansion can still be purchased independently without needing to re-purchase the core game.
As for Heart of Thorns, if you are a ‘new’ player you get a great bonus which is a ‘free’ GW2 core game! Kudos!
If you are a veteran player who has already paid for the core game, then all you get is the HoT expansion. If you’re fine with that then kudos to you too.
People can spend or ‘not spend’ their money however they want. I’m only trying to educate you that there are better alternatives to the way Anet is handling this particular expansion release.
Truly, the best course of action would be to wait until the expansion goes on sale and buy it then:)

Back when I purchased Guild Wars: Factions they didn’t make me re-purchase GW: Prophecies again even though it was required to play it.
Similarly, when I purchased Guild Wars: Nightfall and Eye of the North I didn’t need to re-purchase the core game again and again.
Those packs can still be purchased as standalone expansions on the Guildwars Online Store. They do have some bundles as well.

My point being that an expansion should be sold both as a standalone pack as well as being bundled. This will help encourage new players while not alienating your current player base.

Why all the hate?
Didn’t you get that free extra character slot with your pre-purchase? You guys are so greedy! jk
In reality, I’m not about to buy the expansion. Not now. Not ever. All due to the way Anet treats their existing customer base. I mean, they will basically ignore a problem for long enough until it goes away on its own. Here is an example: Hall of Monuments.
Well, I certainly hope that all those new players who were bribed into buying the expansion+free core game are happy with their purchase. It will be less players in the end.
I really liked those Guardian tome skills and used them a bunch. Too bad. Guardian was my favorite class until this overhaul and my only 80. Not sure what I will do now.
Sadly, compared to GW1, nobody in GW2 has very many choices as far as skills go. Especially elite skills.
Maybe there aren’t that many GW1 vet’s who actually play GW2. Maybe Anet decided it really isn’t even worth their time to fix this. That is what I am speculating anyways since it has clearly been brushed aside for all these months.
Either way, I don’t even care anymore.
Can I still play GW2 as it is now without buying the expansion pack?
Or will it be required?

If new players who buy the HoT expansion pack get GW2 base game for free, shouldn’t the already established GW2 community get a refund for the money they payed for the GW2 base game upon purchasing the HoT expansion?
Wouldn’t that be fair for all?
I realize this would never happen, but it is the logical solution.
I feel like I am at work having to follow up on the progress on this issue every few days.
And that isn’t my idea of fun.Anet will announce it when the issue will be resolved and HoM will be re-enabled…
I think you’re missing the point.
Put simply, if we do not express the fact that this needs to be dealt with, it will simply become a non-issue and Anet will assume no one cares that it is disabled and leave it as is.
Much like the idiom, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

Why not make a $25.00 version so that ppl who own GW2 do not have the buy it again just to get the expansion?
Just asking.
I feel like I am at work having to follow up on the progress on this issue every few days.
And that isn’t my idea of fun.
Please get this resolved now. It’s been months.
It absolutely does not help Anet to promote a game expansion if they won’t even solve the Hall of Monuments issues. Plus, I am much less likely to even buy the expansion if the HOM problem is simply swept under the rug and forgotten.
Just saying.
Please solve this issue.
Don’t abandon your GW1 fanbase.
