Yeah. I agree.
Those players who feel “betrayed” should see it like this.
Imagine this:
- Exotic Tier wasn’t released during game launch.
- They implant a new tier called exotic in-between rare and legendary on Nov 15.Isn’t it going to be the same?
There’s no gear treadmill element in this.Anet still live up to it’s promises. You will still able to explore all content with any tier equipments. It’s not like traditional mmo treadmill where you must get gear X to experience content X. In GW2, you’re able to experience 100% of the content.
Ah, with exotics we’re talking about the last level of end game armor tiers. In terms of “stats”. Yes, I will concede that A-Net doesn’t have “requirements” for dungeons and other aspects of the game.
However, they have stated numerous times in their development cycle how they were going to buck the trend of MMO’s; by not requiring the player-base to continually grind out equipment to remain on an even playing field with even the most hardcore of players. Looking to Guild Wars 1 for the prime example of this ideal. For the entire run of that game, never once did they increase the max ceiling of stats for the last tier of armor/weapons. And that game was out for YEARS. Guild Wars 2 is out for “3 months”, and they’re already telling players that the armor they currently have is already obsolete.
What about those WvW players who are done exploring the PvE side of the game and simply want to fight in the Eternal Battlegrounds? Now they have to take time from doing what they love to do to remain on an even playing field with those who have the Ascended Armor set.
That or they can just spend gold to get it. Which is what this update reeks of, A-Net trying to get people to spend money on gold so they can have the same stat line as everyone else at the “new armor ceiling”.
Also, the Ascended Armor set goes against the whole ideal of “allowing the content to drive the fun of the end-game”. Now it’s getting the pink armor instead of the yellow armor that’s going to be driving the end-game.

This is NOT breaking their promise. If people actually use logic, its just another tier. Just like Blues, Just like Greens, Just like yellows, and just like oranges. It is NOT a gear treadmill since you dont get better gear after this. It is just like legendaries being the best. Now its ascended thats the best. It is just more variety, not a broken promise.
But Legendaries weren’t better than Exotics in the stat department. Actually, read what they posted about how Legendaries will fare next to the Ascended tier…
“You’ll also see more Legendary items in the future and an update to our existing Legendary weapons. Legendary items were always intended to be on par with other “best-in-slot” items. So fear not, all existing Legendary weapons, which are currently on par with Exotics, will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game. Thus Legendaries will remain “best-in-slot” items. All Legendary items going forward will be of Ascended power. We also have plans to add more fun ways to acquire Legendary precursor items with a more “scavenger hunt” feel than they are acquired currently.”
Legendaries were just the step above exotics on the horizontal progression ladder. Now they’ve completely flipped the ladder and have made it vertical again. How can you not see that?
Oh my god. It is not even a carrot! It is just another tier. Just like greens, and blues, and whites, Its progression.
Take a deep breath, read what you just wrote and then respond again. Are you unfamiliar with the idea of the carrot metaphor?
Everyone does realize it’s only accessories and Back item’s that you can get this month? They are making it very slow, so you have time to get these items before they add more.
What if you aren’t interested in that content but want to do other things that still rely on PvE gear?
You use exotics?
You realize how easy dungeons are with exotics, right? And what other PVE content is there, exactly?
There is this little mini-game called WvW. You know, where you take the armor and weapons you’ve earned in other parts of the game. Oh, silly me, it’s such an insignificant part of the game…who cares about those people. Amiright?
Can’t fault a community when it ultimately falls on the developer to sift through legit complaints. Also, the community didn’t completely go against the manifesto of the game they only released 2 months ago.
3 months. there is a difference.
OHHH, sorry…three months. It took them an extra month to go completely against their own manifesto. I’m sorry. Nothing to see here, everyone go after the illustrious carrot A-Net promised we wouldn’t have to run after.

Having to grind out a new tier of gear to remain relevant in WvW isn’t my idea of fun.
Exactly.
I don’t like dungeons, i do enjoy other areas of the game and WvWvW and i really don’t like the fact i will basically have to grind something i don’t like to get items to remain on a level playing field in areas i do like.
It’s cool the back item is via the forge (and again it better use the 5 gold guild back item as a base) but to make the rings (and from the sounds of it other items in the future aswell) gated to the dungeons is just wrong, very wrong.
Yes, which is why the horizontal/cosmetic progression has always made sense to me. You want to be the coolest kid in school and pimp your character out with the cool looking stuff? Fine, we’ll give you all of these awesome skins to obtain and everyone will know how awesome you are when you run around the world.
Instead, A-Net has decided to do it exactly like everyone else has tried and failed at. Ruining everyone else’s fun for the grinders. Which doesn’t even really make sense when your game is free to play, and you don’t have to worry about monthly subscriptions keeping your revenue flow going.
Well, it didn’t take long for A-Net to go completely against its mantra of “fun first”. Oh well, Marvel Heroes will be out soon and it will be free-to-play.
How is this not going to be fun? It’s a ton of new challenging content. Please get a grip.

I’m actually astonished that folks are touting that they’re leaving due to Black Lion Chest stuff. I mean, I can understand not buying gems (or not spending them on keys), but there is a lot more to this game than awesome weapon skins. Anyhow, I said it, but I’ll say it again: I’m very happy with the Mad King Chest solution. I came in with the understanding that Black Lion Chests were a gamble — my gripe was that either you got one of the rare event items, or no event items at all. The Mad King Chests addressed this by giving folks a way to not only get more chances at the rare event stuff, but ALSO guaranteed event items. I just don’t understand how that’s not an acceptable solution.
Because unless everything is given to you, then people will complain. It’s really the state of the MMO world at this point. Make nothing special, and make it so everyone can get it or there will be those who complain. It’s just a guarantee at this point.
If anything, I laud A-Net for sticking to their guns on this and making certain items (that are completely OPTIONAL) rare so that for people who have them, they are something special.
A-Net is really taking a risk here, pleasing the fans who want to see items like these extremely rare and special. Compared to those who just want everything, which there are most definitely more of in this day and age. These are also generally the people who still can’t comprehend the fact that this is only Act I of a four act event. What I really want to see happen is later on, they make it so these items are obtainable through the completion of the Mad King quest line. Then they’ll have nothing to complain about, except their own impatience.
Scepter by itself = boring. Scepter w/ Focus = Good CC & dmg mitigation.
Guys… don’t forget, this event hasn’t even run 24 hours. There may be more down the road.
How dare you bring logic into this…More stuff coming which could provide the weapon skins. That’s just crazy talk.
I would say you’ll probably be fine, I think the most important aspect of the item was the clue on it….a raging clue.
I hate to use the WoW word here.. but holiday events in WoW gave EVERYONE nice, permanent, fun, items..
Then there was a second tier of slightly more rare items…
Then another tier…
and then a super rare tier (certain items from horseman). But everyone got cool kitten.
Event isn’t over yet.
Well, unfortunately gaming has become all about the “I want it all, right at this very second”. I don’t want to have to work for anything, or just enjoy other aspects of the game…I want this one thing and if I don’t get it then I’m going to quit playing and take it to the forums.
My favorite thing about all the complaining is that we’re only 25% into the actual event, we’re on Act I of IV and people are complaining like there’s absolutely nothing else coming through the pipe between now and Halloween.
It’s not even a matter of patience at that point, but just not comprehending how a “Four Act” event works.
How many people here haven’t bothered to read dev comments? All of the halloween content hasn’t even started yet… it’s not like what we’ve seen so far is everything. Try reading once in a while… the mad kings kingdom hasn’t even opened up yet. The best content of the event isn’t going to start until the 28th.
As for the chests… oh well. Live and learn.
I don’t know why I bother to log into the forums… the vocal majority seem to be the least informed and the most presumptuous.
There is maybe 1% of actual player base that posts in forums? Maybe? 99% of the 1% is kitten kitten complain kitten and moan.
1 act is open people.
Probably my favorite part of all the whining, the fact we’re only really 1/4th of the way through the event and most people think that this is it.
I can get the “Investigate” prompt up every so often, but nothing happens. It disappears and all I can do is talk to Tassi again.
I can confirm this as well. The “Inspect” prompt flashes for a second then disappears. Ghost doesn’t appear at all. All different types of scanning have been used.
