Why not give folks the option to use one of these:

So even if a hacker happens to have the password trough a keylogger, which Windows users seem to catch faster than anything, he can’t use it because of the ID dongle.

Auruan.2837Buy to play format, buddy. They gain nothing from people who already have the game, at this point. Mac compatibility means more copies to sell. More copies sold means more money. Perhaps more money means they’ll be able to afford better ways of fixing what’s still broken!
Reminds me of a certain indie developer with that open world game about cubes and mines and crafting written in Java…

I would like to add a question about an API to the Chat system. I would love to chat with my guild folks from outside the game.
Technically speaking:
- An approved server runs a “CGI-Chat” system that is linked to $guild. Approved as an anti-hacking measure. Only the ip from the guilds server can access the API.
- Folks from $guild log in there with a separate chat password. Again as an anti hacking measure. When a hacker can gather someones chat password trough sniffing all he could do would be spamming the guild chat and that can be quickly solved by the server owner by temp-banning that member until he changed that password.
- The chat password can only be set from inside the game with something like /setchatpassword MyHyperCoolChatPassword4711
- The server acts as a relay between the chat user and the ANet servers with the folks inside the game.
I could cough the CGI-Chat system up in like one day in Perl and would even post that skeleton to the forums for everyone to use.

I know its unsupported, but any tips on getting better FPS with Wine under Linux?
My specs:
- AMD Am2-5000+
- NVidia GeForce 9600 GT (512 MByte)
- 4 GByte RAM (Upgrade coming soon…)
- Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 (Gnome3 in “Fallback Mode”/Gnome2-UI)
- Wine 1.5.1 with needed patches (PlayOnLinux package)
- Game running with -dx9single (Otherwise broken chat and a black login screen…)
In some regions of the Human start area, especially the underground areas, my FPS go down to ~4. With graphic settings that let good old TES3 look like a 2013 game. -.-
The Charr region works much better, tough, even with so much more going on there and so much more polys to paint for my graphics card.
Havent seen the rest yet.
BTW: I play the game under my main OS becausekittenWindows restarts the graphic drivers all the time. Not funny. How do you Windows folks live with that crappy excuse of an OS? My system works wonderful under Linux but Windows just behaves very very crappy.

alcopaul.2156Computers are preloaded with Winblows. I would think that a Linux port will be necessary if at least half of the computers sold in the market is preloaded with Linux.
And here you have the hen egg problem.
Linux can only spread for gamers if Windows becomes obsolete for them.
On another note, playing GW2 on PlayOnLinux right now, it automatically downloads and installs a separate Wine1.5.1 with the mousefix and some other fixes not yet in Wine main. Only things that stinks in this setup is that you need the -dx9single command parameter and that somehow ext3 doesn’t like the gw2.dat blob and loading times are somewhat slower than under Windows.
On the other side, my Linux never killed the graphics card driver, my Windows does that all the time.
