Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

I keep thinking: this had to be motivated, and early on, by money worries.

But, they have a money making machine sitting idle, or predicated on bad gambling: the BLC chests and the new Consortium ones.

Instead of making a whole game philosophy switch, to we presume, keep a certain group of players happy and playing, and so spending money, why not fire up that money machine in the Gem Store?

If pure profit is needed give us town clothes, lots of them, and let us wear them in combat since armor type does not really matter right? Since there is no holy trinity, what does it matter? What does it matter in PVE what we are wearing?

Then, add TONS of actual outfits, dresses, everyday clothes, dress up clothes, costumes, for RP and just fun. Watch the $ signs show up.

Then, add more minis, weapon and armor skins.

For new content, FIRST fix what you have. Then, add better designed, dynamic dungeons, DE’s, mini dungeons, dragon encounters. New mini areas like Lost Shores with new DE’s, hearts, objectives. New rewards: let anything in the store have a chance to drop in the world. We see that really cool town outfit out in the world, and one piece of it drops? We will buy the rest. Money to you.

Anet has the creativity and vision to have made new content that would have added depth. Then, add a hardcore dungeon that would allow the grinders to go after weapon or armor skins that could ONLY be gotten there. They can show off their shinies, and others can ignore them. Play like we want. Simple.

Fire up that money machine. Fix what you have. Add depth content.

Why could that not have happened? Why?

I waited all day to post.
Reviewed all the pages.

Part of me is just soul sick to find my beloved GW2 heading towards a dreaded gear treadmill.

Am I surprised? Not after the blc mess from Halloween. That just felt so money-grabbing as to be unethical. It made me start to realize, they don’t want to make a good living off a great game, they want to make money at any cost to their players.

This feels the same way.

I want to support the game. I want to see change and growth. But I think they had it all in place with an update 3 months in without this:

1. fix the current content
2. add things we really want to buy in the gem store
3. let fun things like town clothes, dyes, pets continue to drop sometimes from the world
4. give us more town clothes
5. let us craft more fun things

And as for progression? Add to our existing gear if you must for icky gear gating in certain dungeons, but don’t make our exotics obsolete this soon. Or ever.

You have the chance here to make a game like none other. Fix and add to depth to what you have. Give us more skins to go after in dungeons. Give us more titles to want. Give us multiple ways to get everything.

I really hate dungeons in this game. I need to do Arah to finish my story and have put it off for 2 weeks. I hate the dungeons in the game that much. Mini dungeons? Those can be great (mad king!). Now thinking I have to do a dungeon over and over to get this gear? I know I don’t HAVE to, but I am enough of a completionist that yes, I will probably try. If I am here. If I can stomach it all again….

Anyway, rambling. Is this dev team not aware that if they need a money machine, they have a very empty gem shop just waiting for them????

Guild Housing/Player Housing

I don’t care about guild housing, though it would be nice.

But personal housing? Done right? I would be spending time and money on the game even more. Let us craft things for the house, let us use it for extra storage. Let it have a wardrobe for all these outfits, etc.

Have trophies we can collect out in the world to display. Some will scream “go play sims,” but I would argue: housing makes a player feel more ownership, more personal investment, into a game. That equals commitment and spending time and resources on GW2.

Our personal home instances are already set up to have this feature. I think early next year, after they get some mileage under the dev belts, we can look forward to this feature. Yes, balance what we have. Fix bugs/bots/balance. But looking to the future? Housing. Yes. Please.

Um, what he was saying, if you read it, is that he does not have any basic utilities. Probably using his cell phone to post. He can’t get in to get a hat. sad

Armour in GW2 is largely bland/underwhelming

I like some of the armor, but get very tired of the frou-frou female light armor. So fantasy stereotype. I would love to have some dresses, steampunkish looks, skirts, robes, revealing, matronly, etc. Just MORE. And since we can’t pvp in open world, I say let us use costumes and town clothes anywhere. I can’t even understand not letting us dress up for pvp: I mean in a zerg can you REALLY tell anything about the character you are fighting by their clothes?

In a real life full on battle, you don’t stop to assess clothing, you get on with the fight already. Then judge the opponent by skills, not clothing.

We need to be able to make town clothes, armor, etc. that is different. Having all tiers be identical in looks is a huge disappointment. I just bet things will improve as the game ages a bit. Just don’t want too long, Anet. Looks matter in this game.

I just hope for variety. Getting the same mobs gets tedious regardless of their looks or abilities. Spice it up a bit please.

The Female Human epidemic

Karma.5987

As a female gamer, I always make and play female characters. I am a grown woman, but I do love playing dress up :} I know males and females who play each gender. To each her/his own. I guess since the female humans are the “prettiest” both genders will be attracted to them.

We are a visual species, so looks do matter to some. I never question a person’s reasons for playing either gender.

Me personally? I play everything BUT human. My mains are sylvari, Norn, and asura. I do not like the female charr look at all, which was a huge disappointment to me.

I finally made one human female, a thief. I like her very much, but I made her have character instead of Barbie beauty. She is my banker.

Halloween appreciation thread [Merged]

The Halloween Event had some of the best game moments yet for me. And some of the worst. But I think there were some things included that should give the dev team good data for future events.

I for one will miss the event! It was an ambitious, epic holiday event for our first big one in the game. Here is my overview:

1. loved the build-up, the narrative story-ness such as: the lion statue gradually changing, hearing the ghosts’ stories, the HUMOR of the writing

2. the graphics and voice over for the king were excellent

3. the creatures we turned into because of tonics = win (that they could dance and jump even better)

4. having it unfold in acts was great, if a bit confusing for those who did not read the forums, etc.

5. THE BEST surprise for me was how much I like the mini-Mad King dungeon. Just the right length, just hard enough, a bit of jumping, and when the first dye dropped in there for me? I made enough noise of joy to scare my cat. Now we need that chance for dyes, dye packs, minis, town clothes to drop from instance chests, from world boss chests, from random hidden chests, etc.

6. We will play and pay for good carrots and having them drop sometimes out in the world? Lovely. Upped my fun quotient.

7. clocktower: out of this world design and well done, but maybe tuned just a bit too hard for a holiday jumping puzzle? Hard core is great for good platformers, etc. but left many out. Maybe two modes with similar but different loot?

8. THE STORE: witch’s outfit such good design and good value. I will pay gems for these kind of outfits, but not often and not unless they are great because as an alt-oholic I want to be able to use them on all characters without taking them off one and taking up bank inventory to switch. And then whoever is in costume has to have their other town clothes in the bank, and those are a set per character. A good costume tab would be amazing.

9. THE STORE: I spent too much money on keys making wrong assumptions and know it was my own fault. I think this system is flawed, or the way it was announced implied a greater chance that was true. It was misleading. I know now it is gambling and won’t be buying any more keys ever for any reason.

10. LOVED the Labryinth in all its glory.

11. PVP events, needed better “something” to pump them up a bit, but well designed and fun.

Thanks, Anet and dev team for attempting this epic story and game design for us. Now remember, a chance to get cool cosmetic things in chests ups the fun factor for many of us. Knowing that you can get these in the world on a rare occasion? Priceless!

For those of us that spent money, will you buy again at Christmas?

I have never gotten enough gold to change them over to get things I want with gems. Also, I don’t mind sending some of my entertainment budget toward the game through the store.

1. The WITCH’s outfit was worth it. Would buy it or another like it again anytime. Now, if I could just wear it even to fight my necromancer would be so happy.

2. Black Lion Keys NOT worth it: My own fault. I know that. I guesss I knew it was a gamble? But honestly from the implied language, I read it as “really good chance for a weapon skin.” I knew they were rare, but I blew so much money on keys that I am ashamed. I thought “rare” as in a bit hard to get, but since it was just a holiday skin, that it would not be uber uber rare. I played so much through the event, and loved most of it, but I never saw a weapon skin of any kind from any source. Which prompted me to buy a few more keys. It was a vicious circle of my own making, but I do think designed badly.

Will I spend more money? Not for a long time except for a very cool outfit that I know will be an investment in game enjoyment. Now just make them appear in a costume tab for all my characters and not take up inventory space please.

Looking for More Carrots (On a Stick)

@Leiloni: good ideas there, and much thought put into how to make your own paths in the game.

Tonight, I logged in, took myself to a low level area I had not seen and just explored, did some random events, explored a bit, then sold all my mats, made some money. Got some gems from some gold, and bought a round of minis.

And no idea who put the (on a stick) on this thread title, but it cracked me up :}

I still want more random fun, but making my own paths worked better tonight.

Thanks all, for the input. I am going to log in tonight and start looking to make gold to buy fun things from the TP. That will give me a goal: make and buy dyes and buy pets.

And like I said, I do love exploration. But I am still hoping for more random goodness too as the game matures. And clothes. Not armor. Clothes. And maybe I just don’t like the belly-dancing look of most of the elemental gear for my sylvari. I belly-dance a bit in real life, so I love the flowing, hip-baring outfits. But not all the time, and not in a fight haha. I actually like the medium and hard armor styles so much better. I should have leveled my ranger first!

Now about those carrots! I actually leveled cooking to 400 and loved that. I did it the hard way after they stopped the easier way when the game first launched that some players found. I had so much fun going out to find ingredients, do hearts, etc. So, maybe I do need to just find a goal and make my own carrots, well things with carrots in them!

But Anet, please let a few more random fun things drop in the world.

Lately, I have logged in less and less. I log in, my crew says, whatcha wanna do? I answer, hmmm, meh. I can’t think of anything to do that really makes me get excited.

This makes me sad. I love the world, the towns, so exploring still interests me a bit. But, I get nothing but the experience for my efforts. Yes, the intrinsic fun of it should be enough. Dungeons? They seem to be ok, but again, for my efforts I have never gotten a piece of gear to use, and nothing to actually WANT in there. DE’s are fun at times, and those I love most because of, go ahead laugh, dye. That random chance for something fun makes me like that.

So, last night, having another “meh” night and my crew finally going separate ways or off to other games, I sat down to ask myself what is missing for me. The answer is just what stood out for me, as a casual player who does like character progression and working on skills, but seems to also be looking for something the game is missing.

I am asking, to our community, does anybody else feel this way? Here are my observations after asking myself some hard questions.

1. I need carrots on a stick that are just fluff and fun and random. For example:
dyes
pets
clothes
outfits
armor for skins
potions
food
fun items

And I know the game needs cash shop money. I can and have gone there for an outfit and a few pets.

But, I would still do that and have more fun if there was at least a chance for some of the fun fluff to be found out in the world in the process of our going about the business of the game world.

I need more clothes, lots more. Not just pirates and cooks, but dresses, pants, shirts, skirts, hats. And I need some of these to not just be in the store but a chance to find a random piece in a chest, in a dungeon, in a mining bag.

Same for some of the pets. Maybe a few special ones that only drop in the game and cannot be bought?

I want things to do like fishing and the chance to find a rare fish that will let turn into a shark! I know all this is silly, carebear fluff and I am not proud that realizing the lack of these carrots in the game mattered enough to make me start not playing as much.

But there it is. I am not proud haha. And the game is young. Maybe more fluff and cosmetic fun will come, right?

Am I the only one feeling like something is missing?

I would love to see more clothes: shirts, skirts, dresses. We could have them as rewards, as chest drops, as karma and gem buys. Tailors could make things. This is a whole part of the game that right now is lacking.

Chocolate, butter, and Pirates

I know some cooking items were changed from buy to drops, but have any of you noticed how MUCH butter and chocolate is dropping in some areas? Gendarren Field pirates seem to love the stuff. I just opened 4 bags of pirate loot and got 8 bars of chocolate and some butter.

Bet we see some fat pirates before long. Maybe the drop rate should be looked at?
