What facets of the game are you interested in?
For instance – the shield is pretty worthless in 98% of the PvE content of the game, useless in WvW zergs, ok in sPvP and pretty darn good in WvW roaming. The hammer on the other-hand is a generally useful weapon.
I’m kinda in the same boat as OP. Been playing Mesmer and now I’m in interested in Guardian. Currently levelling one up and having a blast.
I’m pretty interested in a hammer / whatever wep sets build although my preference is probably hammer / sword + focus or sword + shield (I’m open to anything else as long as hammer is the main wep). What sort of trait would you recommend and what utilities synergize well together? My focus is mainly in sPvP and WvW roaming.
Also what sort of armor/trinket sets would you recommend if I’m mostly interested in dealing the hurt but still be able to withstand a moderate amount of damage?
Thanks in advance.
This build was posted over three weeks ago: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Maximised-Hybrid-Phantasm-Build-Roaming
It’s more of a hybrid build but it’s still very much power based than condi. I’ve been using that build ever since the original poster posted it and I’ve been having quite a very good amount of success with it.
OP uses a hybrid zerker/rabid gear but I use celestial in sPvP and zerker armor + knights accessories in WvW instead and feel the build is still excellent. It can easily beat blackwater mesmers out of the water too, I’m not sure how but for some reason this build is able to do that. Taking on 2 or 3 opponents is quite doable as well provided you’ve had a good amount of practice with it.
Despite having only one condi removal from your heal + Mender’s Purity – condi necros, engineers, mesmers and etc are still easily beatable. I’ve been toying around with my utilities and took out veil for Arcane Thievery instead and have had numerous success with it too – there are times where I miss having an extra stealth for escapes against uneven odds but then there are times I miss having a more reliable condi removal to win a fight.
Either way, it’s a good foundation to base your PU build on and can be tweaked to your desires.
While any class can do 1v1, if you really just wanna focus on solo/small group roaming, then Mesmers are pretty awesome with that except you’re gonna hate not having perma-swiftness. Otherwise Thieves are good too.
Eh i wouldn’t get too hung up on that. He doesn’t seem to know other classes very well. I play a mesmer and staff/scepter combo is far from ‘scary’
Edit: Mesmers don’t really have any ‘faceroll’ builds. You’d have to be really bad at your class to lose to a mesmer that’s facerolling his keyboard.

By swapping weapons in combat you can have 2 offensive phantasms up. In theory you could have up to 5 (or 6 an elite?) phantasm at once? I regularly have three up at once. To be clear: you can have all of your Clones AND several Phantasms up at once.
I can then generate 2 more Clones with Sword’s two abilities that generate clones (one also does a BLOCK) plus possibly a third (and 4th) clone depending on which Stun Break utility I have ready.
I just returned to the game a couple weeks back and just got my mesmer to 80 and currently gearing him. I’m pretty sure you can only have a maximum of 3 clones/phantasms combined. No more than 3. If you summon more than 3, one of them will go poof.
Tip: When you summon a fourth clone, the first clone that you summoned will pop itself and it will trigger the ‘clone on death’ traits such as cripple, or applying a condition when traited for it.
As others have explained the others quite clearly. I’ll explain PBAoE.
PBAoE = This term has been used since the first generation of MMOs over 10 years ago. It just means Point Blank Area of Effect. PBAoE spells are AoE spells which originates and effects people AROUND the caster (360 degrees angle).
Other common ‘Area of Effects’
AoE = Area of Effect itself is a broad term but specifically it’s usually referring to ‘targetted’ AoE where your ability will cast an area of effect on your selected target.
GTAE = Ground targetted Area of Effect. Pretty self-explanatory and was a widely used term in First Gen MMOs but has fell out of use and the above ‘AoE’ term has taken place over it.
CAE = Cone Area of Effect. Abilities which only effects to targets which are in front of the caster usually between 45 to 90 degrees angle.
Gaming Background:
I started playing online games with Age of Empires II: Age of Kings/Conquerors and Diablo II. Loved those two games to bit!
My first ever MMO was Dark Age of Camelot which I stuck with from 2001 until the end of 2005 (which I returned to in 2009 until 2011) and moved to Guild Wars where I played for a year before going to WoW because guildies left GW. After WoW, played Lord of the Rings Online and actually enjoyed raiding there more than I did in WoW. Played numerous other MMOs after playing WoW for 3 years and haven’t found any MMO which has got me clamoring to play every single hour just like DAoC, GW1, WoW & LoTRO did for me.
In order of ‘enjoyment’ I got from MMOs are:
DAoC – Simply put, this game made me a PVP’er and has the best 3 faction system ever that even WvWvW doesn’t compare at all.
GW1 – PVP in this game was a fresh breath of air after playing DAoC’s massive scale PVP. The arenas and GvG were very welcoming.
LoTRO – Very good PvE and I never expected myself to enjoy a PvE game so much.
Warhammer Online – Enjoyed the unique class mechanics for PVP
Age of Conan – Similar to above, enjoyed the unique Melee class mechanics especially for PVP
WoW – good balance of PvE/PvP, but crappy community, elitism etc kinda made this game less enjoyable.
The above are really just the ones that are memorable and worth mentioning. I admit I enjoy the fantasy type MMORPGs and can’t stand playing sci-fi MMOs like Star Trek Online, EVE, SW:G, SW:TOR and numerous other non-fantasy MMOs I’ve tried.
Love/Hate GW2?
Pretty neutral about this. No hate and no love. I was blown away by the beauty of the game and the game mechanics are pretty unique. I guess I’ve really just outgrown MMOs or even gaming as a whole and with a busy working life now, I find it hard to invest my time as much as I previously did. Maybe I’m just burnt out from dedicating a large portion of my time to gaming. I haven’t actually logged in GW2 in a few days now and haven’t played any games at all.
.. kitten Mesmers are just insanely fun. I went through all the professions and got bored within a few levels and tried a Mesmer last. I wasn’t a huge fan of them in GW1 but they are just fun here. After watching MrPrometheus youtube vids, the profession just really clicked to me and it really is one of the more unique professions out there compared to other MMOs.
I can imagine things will only get better once I’m higher level with more traits!
Also, what I hate is, people who are out of range and you try to cast a phantasm/clone thinking they are just in range, cool down applied and no clone/phantasm is casted.
Really, this is the only issue they need to fix with regards to Clones. I hate casting #3 Sword only for it to go on cooldown without a Clone because I’m just slightly out of range.
Simple as that, do you guys feel like Yoda as an Asuran Mesmer? I’m just so hooked on my Mes now coz of that feeling.
Evading around doing flips, suspended in the air while doing Blurred Frenzy (sword #2) and not to mention all the mind manipulation themed spells similar to the Force.
GS #5 bam they’re all pushed back akin to the Force Repel/Push.
Mmmmm, DAOC PBAOE bombing on my Spiritmaster…. good times.
Indeed. I remember PBAE ganking an Alb Zerg with low RRs, the Healer AOE Stun + SM PBAE is just too much fun. Mmmmm
Prior to watching your guide I was about to give up on my lowbie mesmer, after watching part 1 and 2 of your video and gaining a huge understanding of how each skills/weapon combination work, I’m completely hooked now and am doing huge pulls for a low level, albeit its dangerous doing so without proper gear/traits, I’m having a blast with it!
