My wife and I have returned after being away for two years, but really are total noobs at the game at this point. We rolled new characters, she is a Warrior and I’m an Elementalist and we’re still trying to figure out what builds we like. She seems fond of the great hammer and I’m inclined toward D/F with Air attunement, but we really don’t have much of a clue what we’re doing.
Firstly, welcome back to the game – i myself returned again a few months ago, things really have changed eh :P?
Secondly, I found the dulfy class guides really helpful – they are really detailed and can be a bit confusing but they break down each skill and what its good for, as well as suggesting full builds which are currently ‘meta’ (work well and used by majority of players). They also have an overview of what equipment is good and so on. http://dulfy.net/2014/07/11/gw2-elementalist-pve-class-guide-by-haviz-and-zelyhn/
http://dulfy.net/2014/06/28/gw2-comprehensive-warrior-pve-guide-by-element/. The builds they link on these will load in german but just click the flag on the upper left of the box to switch to english/another language you prefer.
Additionally meta-battle has simple guides to builds that list everything a bit more simply: http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki
I’m confused about Fractals. Are they just progressive dungeons? We never did any dungeons in our previous run through but would like to do them now. When I ask in game which dungeon we should start with, I’m told AC story when we hit our 30’s. Right now we’re 27ish. Is there an equivalent 30’ish fractal or is that something we wait till 80 to do?
I think people have covered fractals but basically:
You need to be level 80
You start at a level 1 fractal and unlock higher levels by either joining a party doing a higher level than you or finishing a fractal at your current ‘fractal level.’
They are random segments of game-play based in the history of tyria rather than a linear dungeon with a story line. You work through 4 ‘fractals’ which are fragments of time and events caught in the mists during each dungeon run. They load randomly so you never know which mix of ‘parts’ you will get.
For any fractal dungeon above fractal level 10 you will need agony resistance otherwise bosses and effects within the dungeon will hurt you more. There are several different types of agony resistance and the type you need depends on what you are trying to infuse it into (weapon / armor / trinket etc). Best read a guide on it before you buy anything as it is confusing! https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Infusion_slot#Infusion_slot
As for AC i suggest being a bit higher than level 30 before trying it as you are both more likely to get a party and more likely to enjoy it as you will have traits etc to use by then. I usually think around level 35 is good – but it is up to you. Its more than doable at 30 if you get a party that knows what it is doing. As for the explorable paths, if you can get a party to show you the ropes, then great but you may find it easier to get a good party when you’re around level 45+ as people like to run AC with level 80s for the money and so like to do it faster than a lower level group can usually do.
In all honesty I would also suggest considering waiting to 80 to ‘learn’ the explorable paths of other dungeons as the mechanics can be tricky to understand at first and the extra edge that level 80 gear and traits gives you can really help.
There are mini-dungeons hidden all over the map which you can explore at any level / the level of the map area. These can usually be done solo or as a small group and don’t require much preparation: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mini-dungeon
The other thing you may enjoy are world bosses. These spawn at certain times of the day and are big fights, often with very large groups. There are several that spawn in low level areas so you dont need to be high level to do them: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World_boss
Personal story is also quite fun to do, a good change from just running around doing heart quests etc and will help you level
You can also join each other on your story missions, although only the person whose story it is will earn it’s rewards (at level 40 if you both pick the same order to work for you can also complete the story line missions together).
Hi oldpepper, just saw your post. I would say, for right now, play something you enjoy even if its not a class you thought you would normally like or even if it may not be a class you want to have as your ‘main.’
This will allow you to experience the game as a whole and get some understanding of how everything works and what you’d like to do, allowing you to create or level a new character more specific to your GW2 playstyle later.
I’ve found that a lot of people (myself included) approach GW2 expecting certain things of the classes, when actually they function slightly differently than one would think or just don’t have the same ‘feel’ and going with something you enjoy is better than bashing your head against a class that needs some time or experience to understand.
It doesn’t take long to level a character to 80, though it may feel long the first time as you are learning. It is easily possible to level to 80 in a week or so of casual play so don’t feel you are ‘loosing time’ by playing something else.
If this isn’t something you want to do then I recommend reading a lot of guides about the thief (as it sounds like it is the class you would like to play). Many people find them hard to level at first but understanding how the class and their skills / weapons work may help. I recommend dulfy guides but they are very indepth and may require a few read-throughs and some play time to understand: http://dulfy.net/2014/07/10/gw2-thief-pve-class-guide/
Alternatively meta-battle build guides show you what builds are currently ‘meta’ (recommended / mainstream) in guild wars 2 for thief and recommends certain weapons etc: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Category:General_Thief_Builds
Hope that helps and that the Gaiscioch Social Gaming Community pick up your question soon!
In case you don’t know what the fuss is all about, recently a bug meant that people that hadn’t earned the God Walking Among Mere Mortals title were able to use it and so the HoM was disabled to both prevent people from gaining rewards that they many not have earned and to try and fix the issue. Its been a couple of weeks now so hopefully it wont be long until a fix… :P
As wanze has said at 5000 achievement points you get a free makeover kit. It’s likely to take a few months of casual play to get that far but dailies and collection AP rewards can help on the way. Personally I wouldn’t rely on RNG for something like that, though you may make the gold you need for the makeover kit if you are lucky enough to get a good mini or dye drop it really is random and you could spend a whole lot of time and money on nothing!
Better to play the game and earn some AP (or treat yourself to £3.50 worth of pixels :P) imo!
As well as all the good advice (duo/tri-named characters often easier to get than a single name) i suggest if your character is your ‘baby’ then name them like one: use baby naming sites.
I find sites like this one really good: http://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby-names-finder as you can type in a ‘meaning’ for a name rather than just searching alphabetically and you get results from languages and cultures around the world.
Personally I also use books I enjoy to name my characters. Especially those lovely, ridiculously long, fantasy epics that require a character list at the start of each book to help you keep track – they’re instant fantasy character name lists and often easy to modify or combine to make something unique!
Just to comment on the necro – Axe is often used as part of a deathshroud build – in fact i think it is the ‘meta’ for it. Personally I’d say that scepter or OH dagger is used least.
However you could have made this article smaller by just picking any underwater weapon… Necromancer trident is like hitting a mob with a sock soft… :P
Ah crap, thought you guys had the same access, my bad! Fingers crossed something moves soon then!
Have you guys tried using the streaming client as a temporary fix? I just tried it after an hour of being stuck on the 1 file and it has let me log in etc
Just right click on your gw2 shortcut – properties – and add this to the end of the target line: -StreamingClient (After the ").
May not work for everyone and i’ve seen a few people about on the forums that it has reset their download so if you don’t have unlimited internet you may want to hold off on trying it…
Just adding in my feedback:
Downloaded the entire patch fine, until the last file. Restarted patcher, run as admin etc and still no joy. Just tried running as the streaming client (adding -StreamingClient to the target line on the guildwars 2 shortcut) and it has started up fine. Might be a temporary fix for some others too!
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Armor
You can look at most of the armor on here for each class – easy enough to pull up several tabs to compare looks you like and then preview it in game on a new toon (using the wardrobe accessed by crafting stations) to be sure
Ah, thanks for that. I’ve sent in a support ticket to see what they say, i didnt want to chance it for exactly the reason you just posted… since it says that some of the stuff is a ‘one time upgrade’ i wasn’t sure if i’d get anything other than the armor!
Thanks, i think i’ll send in a support ticket and see what they say!
Heya all,
I preordered GW2 digital deluxe version and since then a few things in it have changed.
With it now being 75% off i’d like to re-buy it to get the armor and pvp booster (same price as buying armor alone but potentially comes with other things).
My question is can I buy it again? When i got to the store it says I can ‘buy one more at this price’ but it will it come with the other boosters like the guild influence one etc? Will i end up with two copies of the elite skill?
Anyone got some experience of this, by chance?
Thanks!
