Hi! So some history about me…

I’ve been playing MMORPGs for about 10 years, but I am what you would call a “hopper.” I haven’t dedicated much time to any particular game, since I never seem to find friends. IRL, I can just smile at a person and talk to them. Online, it’s never “clicked” to me as to what to do. So I guess I’m kind of online-socially awkward? Anyway, there’s a whole lot I’m enjoying about GW2. It’s really a special game, and I don’t want it to be on my “list.” So here I am, attempting to reach out and find some folks to play with and show me the ropes.

Personality-wise, I’m really goofy. My sense of humor is kind of strange. If you’re turned off by “weird” people, we might not get along too well. But I’m very nice and easy-going. I don’t like to create or to participate in drama. I accept everyone for who they are. I’d like to find a similar group of people— people who don’t take everything too seriously, who like to joke around from time to time. That’s not to say that I don’t take gaming seriously— I always TRY my best and desperately want to improve. But I’m not the type of person to cry and complain if I fail the first time, and I don’t mind shooting the kitten (these filters rule) now and then.

As far as my goals for the game, well, I’m still leveling. I’m currently level 60. I prefer to level at my own pace and alone, just to enjoy the experience, but I like preemptively finding a guild in which I can ask questions, or just participate in chat. The zone channels tend to be pretty quiet in this game, so some conversation would really liven my experience.

Once I reach max level, I’d like to focus on gearing up. I have yet to run any of the dungeons, so having a tolerant group of people to show me how it’s done would really help. I’m also very interested in the PvP in this game. I’ve been playing LoL since 2012, so that’s my only experience. But as a support main, I really enjoy using teamwork to crush the enemy.

I’m very satisfied with my class choice as an Elementalist. It’s a little hard, but I enjoy having such a large kitten nal (????) of tools available. I’ve tried all weapon variants to some degree, and I can’t really pick a favorite, but Staff seems easiest so I’ve been leveling on that.

This game is really different from your traditional MMO, so I’m a little confused about and overwhelmed by the endgame content. I’d prefer not to dive in all alone, so take me under your wing. I’m a cool dude.

My work schedule’s a little strange (I’m a server) but I usually have at least 2-3 hours to play every night. I’m on the east coast. It’s hard to say what my dedicated schedule is, but usually I’ll be on ~9 PM – 1 AM nightly, extending into ~6 AM if I don’t work the following morning, or time before 9 PM if I didn’t work that day. Saturday nights and Sunday are usually when I spend time with my SO. So, yeah, a little goofy, but any free time I get will typically be spent gaming. It’s my primary hobby, and GW2 is now my primary game.

Oh, and I’m on the FA server. Since I’m interested in WvW, that may be important. It’s pretty likely that I will be transferring to Blackgate to play with a friend (if he returns,) but we’re both flexible.

Thank you, and see you in-game!

Um, OP, who is your ISP? Router model (found at the bottom of router?) What antivirus are you using? I ask this because I JUST started encountering this very same error with Battle.net. I have no issue with GW2, but it’s bizarre that someone besides me began experiencing this yesterday. I’m asking for network info, because it appears we are using very different systems (I am using Win 7 on a 3-year-old computer that runs 60 fps on max.) It’s probably just a strange coincidence… but since yesterday, another program’s been crashing with code 0xc0000005 when I try to update anything (and, no, I’m not trying to hijack this into Battle.net support forums.)

On a side note, I would REALLY recommend getting a new system if you’re browsing the internet. Unsupported releases are easy targets for malware, and you’re really putting your system and personal information at risk.

Is Gw2 worth coming back?

I just began playing the game, and I’m in my low 40’s. I haven’t done any dungeons, PvP, or made any friends. But I’m really enjoying it. I really like the “random events.” I played Firefall in beta, and a lot of Rift, and this feels like a more polished, meaningful version of those. I especially love the events which chain into a large boss fight, or the ones which are started by talking to a random NPC or interacting with some random object. It’s a great game for me, since I feel like I can accomplish many things in a short amount of time (work schedule’s kind of crazy.) I also love the design of the world— not just in terms of aesthetics, but how lore is reflected through the environment more than quest text. That’s something that I think many MMOs fall short of.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely check out the lobby the next chance I have to play. I’ve been playing off-peak and haven’t been able to find a group for the dungeon yet. But I’m starting to feel a lot better about the might stacking with S/F. I only have access to 3 finishers right now, but I feel comfortable stacking to 9 in combat. I’m actually a bit more familiar with D/D and Staff, so it’s just a matter of finding comparable gear at this point (my scepter and focus are yellow.) Thanks for your help and advice!

Specifically regarding ele (which I main) the staff is going to be the easiest weapon to learn dungeons with. Also with staff there is only one blast (earth 2) so you can at least blast one of your own fire fields when starting a fight (in addition to arcane wave/arcane brilliance). Also, if you are following guides then I’m assuming you will be running meta gear (zerk), just be prepared that when running zerk you will wipe a lot until you learn what you need to avoid (and even still, the wipes will happen).

Target dummy wise, if you go into PVP you will be upscaled to level 80, gear stats are normalized so you can test any weapon at full effective damage, all traits (except for 1 gm in each line) are unlocked for you and there is both dummies and npcs that mimic players.

I’ll have to look for a new staff then. xD I’ve mostly switching between D/D, S/D, and S/F while leveling, as I found them more fun.

I’ve been gearing to maximize DPS, because that’s what I’m used to doing in other games. Since there are no tanks, I’d imagine some more mitigation would be beneficial. I’m still interested to see how this works out.

I’ve heard people say PvP queue is like, a zone. I assume that’s what you’re referring to? Do I have to play a match to get there? Or can I just, like, go there?

Oh! I didn’t know it worked that way. I hadn’t even opened the window, silly me. Thanks for your reply!

Hello! So far, I’m enjoying the game quite a bit, but I’ve become a bit underleveled. There are some zones I could explore to catch up, but the thought occurred to me to check out the first dungeon. Even though I’m new, I’m not the kind of person who wants to ruin the experiences of other people. I’m currently level 36.

I rolled elementalist, and while I’m having some difficulty learning it, especially the field combos, I think this is the class I’ll enjoy above others. I’ve always preferred element-based magic users, and I enjoy having access to many skills, and occasionally supporting others. However, I’m not very good with it. I die quite a bit in the open world. I struggle to maintain functional awareness of my defensive utilities and cooldowns. There’s still a bit of misclicking when swapping attunements (I figured using my extra mouse buttons would be the simplest way, but I haven’t used them in any other game.) Still, I’m usually able to solo groups of like 4 mobs at my level or a few above, and veterans, although I die sometimes.

I’m kind of scared to enter a dungeon, because I don’t know what the community is like yet. Will it mostly be veterans, hoping for perfect buff maintenance and a fast clear? I really don’t know how to stack buffs before a fight, or if it’s necessary at this level. I can do basic combos while in combat, but I haven’t really focused on maintaining even personal might, much less for a group (I’ve only played solo.) I’m trying, but I’m still tackling more basic mechanics.

I’ve tried reading guides, but a lot of it seems inapplicable to open-world leveling and it’s hard to practice in that environment. Things die too quickly to practice a proper rotation, unless I’m fighting an elite, in which case I happened upon it and don’t have time to alt+tab and say “okay!! Remember this long rotation using acronyms you have to think about for 5 seconds in order to process!” Additionally, I don’t have access to all of the required skills (spent points picking “unviable” things that sounded cool, and to access greater tiers) and traits the guides refer to.

So, clearly I overthink things a bit. Are the story dungeons mainly reserved for new players? Can I enter with piece of mind that I won’t waste other people’s time? Is it fine for me to try? And, finally, are there target dummies somewhere? :P

Edit: I understand it’d probably be beneficial to pick a simpler class as a beginner. But I don’t have much time to invest currently, and I really don’t want to reset my progress and revisit all of the the same open-world content I just saw in the last week.

Will these computer builds run max?

Hi! I’m new here, but I figured I’d offer my two cents.

I’m also looking to build a PC for my boyfriend— there are nice ladies out here! I would highly recommend you gather the parts and build it together as a project. It’s cheaper, quite easy, fun, and will give you a great sense of accomplishment. It also makes it easier to maintain, repair, and upgrade your PC if you had experience building it in the first place. I built my first PC 3 years ago and it’s still running strong. The motherboard and case had adequate instructions, which I followed along with tips on the internet— about as easy as assembling Ikea furniture these days.

The first build looks great to me (I don’t have experience with AMD). I’m running a stock i5-3570k @ 3.4 GHz and an EVGA factory SC GTX 660. I haven’t done anything intensive, just leveling, but I can run the game at max settings at 60 FPS, sometimes dipping to 55. I’ve heard WvW and bigger PvE fights cause FPS issues for most people, so I assume I’ll have to turn down the settings for that. But I’ve been surprised at how undemanding this game is. That 960 looks amazing for the price. I’d love to pick one up one day. I’m not sure if you’ll even need liquid cooling with that build. I’ve had no trouble keeping everything below 70 degrees with an aftermarket CPU fan and two case fans.

I would also recommend MicroCenter. My nearest one is a bit less than 2 hours away, but I saved $200 with their bundle deals. Their staff seems to know their stuff, too. Very helpful.
