OP, while I respect the well meant intentions of your post, I have to disagree with you. Does this depress you? Does it mean every time someone doesn’t agree with you that you are consumed with feelings of depression and failure? If someone dislikes the foods, movies or music you love, does it suddenly rob you of your joy towards those things?
At the risk of sounding flippant, it is a fact that if you find a conflict of opinion being discussed distressing to the point where it affects you as emotionally as you claim, you have some issues that require some help. Life is not happy bubbkitten uncing together politely. Life is a never ending cascade of conflict and criticism, how we handle such things is what defines us.
My god people.. they added one tier of gear as a one-time gameplay improvement, why the kitten is everyone acting like this is the apocolypse?
The term “slippery slope” comes to mind. Many players here have years of MMO playing experience and they can smell rats from a distance. And they are sounding a warning.
That’s what I was going to say. But at the same time, not succumbing just yet to assuming the worst, I will pause to look at Anet’s reputation of the past and while no guarantee of future behavior, it is something that earns a benefit of the doubt. The point?
I think this was some idea that was brought up late in development as a dipping their toe in the water to gauge what the reaction would be. Is it overwhelmingly negative? No, but at the same time, positive its not. Technical issues aside, there is either a fair bit of distaste for this TYPE of content/gameplay or guarded reservation. This sentiment expressed by the OP isn’t just the occasional burp of disgruntled few, its a fairly active topic across many sites. Anet would indeed be foolish to ignore it entirely.
They’ve already made a misstep by not including a dungeon finder, WoW like progression without it downgrades its status significantly. The absence of a monthly fee as a distinction won’t matter if “its alot like WoW…but not nearly as good”.
To be sure, many in our current age feel they are owed something by others without any effort to earn such things. Unfortunately, it is also true that the virtues of compassion and generosity are both abused and seen as the province of fools. It seems this is the natural consequences of designing gated content and it will unfortunately, drive more people away from, than lure towards the game.
The real pity is that Anet did so many things extremely well…and then fell right back into the WoW trap of gear treadmilling and all its associated pitfalls.
Hi Genlog;
First off, there is no real distinction IMHO of magic and non magic in this game. All classes can do melee/range/support. You can play a double dagger wielding necromancer who face pulls or you can play a warrior wielding a longbow who screams like a girl at anything that gets within 10’ and runs away. I don’t mean to belittle your Guild’s feedback, but they spouted drivel. Every class can kick booty in this game, provided you learn its strengths and weaknesses.
You say you don’t like to move around much or dodge but like to kill fast. In my experience, the only class that doesn’t kill fast is the Guardian, but even that class just takes a little more in level count before it too can mow things down very quickly depending on how you specialize. While its true that some classes rely on dodge more than others, recognize that this is what the game has built in as a defense that it expects you to use when the situation arises to do so. If you don’t ever want to use Dodge, that’s your call, but it means you will get your face stomped in at some point when you could’ve avoided doing so. You should also be aware, more and more games are making defense a active part of your decision making, in large part because Gamers complained about how boring it was not having to make such a decision.
You say you don’t like to move around much or dodge, yet called the Ranger boring. If you want to park your feet in one spot and do lots of damage without having to dodge, Ranger is definitely the class of choice. But lets assume you want more burst damage and no pet mechanics to worry about.
Thief, Mesmer or a Elementalist, each is however fragile but do strong damage. Before you dismiss Thief, toss out your preconceived notion of what they are. I admit, the title is misleading, Thief is a very poor name to give that class, Ninja would’ve been more accurate. Each class has range and melee just like every other class, but they have from what I’ve experienced, more burst output than others and that leads to faster kills. The Thief does incorporate Dodge more actively, again, if you got a attitude about using Dodge, then steer shy of the Thief but even the cloth classes must use it from time to time. Also if you don’t like to move around and yet find Ranger boring, you’re in a no win position, you’re going to have to compromise on something somewhere. I don’t personally recommend Necro to you, even if you stay away from pets, they have mechanics that require you be more patient, though of the Light armor types they’re the most sturdy, you are not as burst oriented as the first 3 mentioned. Mesmer will require you to learn how to utilize your illusions and may require a bit more study than Thief or Elementalist.
There is a website called guildwars2guru go there, select the forum of the class you have chosen to play, and then study up on it. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk or be harsh, but if you can’t be bothered to study the particulars of a class, then you’re deciding to remain ignorant and fail at something you could be succeeding at. People have a tendency to leap in and then gripe about how broken something is without bothering to educate themselves even a little bit. My first 3 hours playing GW2 I got my butt handed to me by the game, I then spent 3 hours reading up on the two classes I thought I’d enjoy the most, played the next day and the difference was night and day.
