I think it’s awesome!
Took me an hour or two to make it through but, man, you feel like you accomplish something by the end! Of course now I can easily complete it 50% of the time but practice makes perfect.
Under the security page it says I have 4 separate logins. When I click disconnect on any one of them, I get the following error:

not sure if this matters, but I was in the MK Labyrinth when the game went down
same here …..
I’m quite shocked that Engineers don’t make this list. I may be biased as I play an Engineer, but the sheer utility that they bring to the group is staggering.
Have a buddy (or your favorite Guardian) who has a lackluster ranged weapon? We have a Mortar for that (seriously, this Elite is 10 times better than people give it credit for). Need a perimeter established, or a choke point held when that enemy zerg comes knockin? We have Grenades for that problem too! And the Elixir Gun. Oh the shenanigans when you want to support your favorite zerg! Again, I’m biased as it’s a class that I LOVE and have a setup for almost any challenge I may meet in WvW. But IMHO a well played Engineer can make a huge difference in a battle.
That being said: Mesmer is fantastic. Ele is friekin great, and Warriors are the backbone of any good group!
Elixir U + Grenades = crazy AoE burst destruction
My alt loves to make use of that combo
I actually find that your average PUG mesmer is a waste of space. It takes a lot of coordination to do a portal jump, and all their other skills are nothing more than annoyances. I would much rather have that person be any other class (even a necro) specced for AoE damage at 1200 range which is what wvw is all about.
If you belong to a coordinated guild then you get fancy with creative builds and melee.
I like your idea. At the very least making the orb buff something other than stats, like badge of honor drop rate or upgrade discounts, would help with balancing.
Looks like those who are the fist ones getting the orbs maintain their position at the top.
Or is it the other way around?
My guess is that they’re both correlated and synergistic
i think a lot of you guys are not appreciating how disruptive melee is in WvW fights. It makes the enemy zerg fragment into smaller and weaker groups that are easily killed by your own zerg.
everyone has tried staff. i recommend giving D/D a try. you will need play very aggresively and use your mobility skills to survive. D/D is also far superior to staff when it comes to chasing.
I agree that melee is disrupting but ele just doesn’t do melee in WvW very well. We are much more useful letting the warriors and guardians run in while we AoE on top of them.
Look at the current scores for WvW on Monday afternoon (taken from http://mos.millenium.org/matchups#NA):
Tier 1:
JQ 155, 3 orbs, +660
SBI 67, +35
HoD 31, +5
Tier 2:
IoJ 141, 3 orbs, +600
CD 65, +65
ET 48, +30
Tier 3:
SoS 193, 2 orbs, +625
DB 28, +45
Maguuma 27, +25
Tier 4:
SoR 142, 2 orbs, +675
Yaks 73, +10
GoM 37, +10
Tier 5, 6 and 7 same picture
All of these games are already over. Keep in mind this is after using (clearly worthless) algorithms to determine server pairings. This is why people think WvW is not fun.
Solution: keep matchups for one week, but split the week into two games:
- one weekend game that runs from Friday to Monday afternoon
- one weekday game that runs from Monday night to Friday afternoon
Reassign properties after the game resets. If you feel people won’t get the most bang for their buck upgrading property then let servers maintain upgrades on their original property (minus built-in siege). Yes, there is less incentive to upgrade property in the enemy zone, but these are properties that typically flip quickly which prevents any significant upgrades in the first place. Frankly, this argument doesn’t even matter, because something clearly needs to change.
“I don’t know. What test did you use to determine the significance of the data? My statistics are a wee bit rusty mind you, but I don’t think it’s a problem with your study persay, you just might need more data to be able to figure it out.”
Thanks Endless! And I actually used logistic regression to test for significance; since I had a continuous explanatory variable (magic find) and a discrete response variable (rank drop with 5 levels) I used logistic regression to find the odds of getting different drop ranks with changing levels of magic find (if that makes sense). The p-value was about 0.25 from memory.
I also tried other ways, like simple linear regression using the drop rank as a continuous variable (1-5) and testing against the hypothesis of no slope. P-value there was like 0.93 haha.
And your point about needing more data… the thing about p-values is that they only measure if there is a difference from 0 and the more data you have (as p-values are a function of how much data you have) once you get into the thousands you’re almost guaranteed to get significant p-values! This is a trick with statistics! A difference of 0.1 is different from zero. 0.00001 is different from zero also. So getting “significance” by getting more data isn’t always the answer… if that makes sense! :P
Was the p-value from the effects test (whole model) or just individual categories of drops? Also, would you mind making your raw data available?
Great job by the way!
I skimmed most of this thread (entertaining!) but I had to chime in because this is categorically wrong:
“This means that there is a 58% greater demand then there is a supply”
Point #2, if you’re interested in true demand I would look at trade volume, not “top demanded item.” This is highly skewed towards items people are trying to flip.
All of the information people are throwing out matter very little because there are so many external variables causing flux at this stage in the game’s life. It’s impossible to say that LIFO to FIFO has any impact.
“This wonderful piece of literature brought to you by BUTTJUSTICE!”
Quote of the year.
As a Thomas More man myself, I prefer we all just sit around thanking the central authority for granting us the opportunity to kitten in a toilet. Just kidding, More was an idiot.
I prefer weighted average cost accounting
edit: unless you’re doing a tax return and then LIFO FTW

Aren’t flat sales taxes regressive? I demand a progressive tax system!
This is SUPER IMPORTANT. I play on IoJ and, besides my IRL friends, I honestly can’t remember ANY other person’s name on my server. Server forums are where communities start to develop. ANet’s emphasis on global integration is great and all but definitely not conducive to forming communities.
The key to any MMO (or used to be) was the community that was created.
IMO, they need server forums (maybe they will when free transfers stop). In many MMOs, those are THE most visited forums and it’s the people you meet that keep you sticking around.
I’m an AoE focused ele and even I’m jealous of cluster bomb.
Seriously, spec around that entire skill and you’ll be super useful in keep battles.
I think they should have the same week long match-up but break up the week, so 3 days on the weekend, 4 days for weekdays.
I’m on IoJ and it’s usually instant to get into borderlands at NA primetime with a 30 min to hour wait for EB. Not too bad, considering you can queue for EB while in borderlands.
We’re definitely tier 2 though, we got handled pretty well by ET.
Do the contents of the chest role when it’s dropped or unlocked?
In other words, do the chests sitting in my inventory have a chance at these perks?
Not sure if this was mentioned before, but I was messing around with whirlpool in WvW and I kept going invisible during the animation. I’m not sure if there was just a rendering problem but it make it difficult to figure out how far away I was from other players.
Damage was 3-5k crits per hit

Gotta have arcane blast if you’re talking about bursting down low health players and blasting staff is way too important to overlook IMO in WvW.
The 20% extra damage to low-hp players skill is interesting, though, but it will be hard to give up running fast in air.
I like to go arcane power with valkyrie mixed-in for more survivability and predictable crits.
I’ve had a lot of fun playing my 80 ele in WvW but I’m looking for a new experience.
So, if you could force that random PUG next to you (that would be me) to play a particular class, what would it be and why?
BTW, pretend my potential class preferences don’t matter, I’m looking for objective opinions! The only caveat being I like to kill things once in awhile.
Effective options seem to be:
Guardian tank
Guardian healer
Thief ganker
Thief cluster bomb spammer
Mesmer support
Warrior rifle
Engineer grenadier
Engineer elixir
Necro conditionmancer
Necro pet master (aka rendering preventer)
Ranger longbow/shortbow
Thanks!
If you’re talking about 1v1 in WvW than neither, I would recommend warrior, ranger, or thief.
If you’re talking about 1v1 in sPvP than I’m not very helpful since I spend most of my time in WvW.
Ele’s advantage in WvW comes from our AoE damage, we are inferior to other classes in all other aspects of the game.
One with some valkyrie, cond dmg is not effective in wvw (not bad in pve though)
You will die in 5 seconds with a Berserker’s set, mix in some Valkyrie at the very least.
Condition damage is overrated, burning already does a nice dot with no additional cd and it takes a LOT of tradeoffs to increase the dot substantially. Even full-out cd necros with tons of potential dots do very little damage in wvw relatively speaking.
So, I’ve been fortunate enough to have some recent free time and have quasi-maxed my character (80 in exotics). Good news everyone! Exotic prices are falling big time, so go run around Orr for a few days and you’ll be orange too :-)
Now, to the topic at hand. What do I do with gold?
- Crafting profits are in a free-fall due to over-supply
- Legendary weapons are not compelling stats-wise
- WvW is so lopsided my server won (or lost, in my case) by the end of the weekend so there’s no reason to spend money on siege or upgrades
- Create a bunch of alts and level them to 80 via crafting (this is my current thought)
Anyone have any other ideas?
P.S. this is NOT a thread on what to do in the endgame, but what to do with gold
I bet you can make a good guess which servers people are from by their responses to this post.
QFT
I specifically don’t understand all the ET people saying “just try harder!” since they “took matches off” which purposefully dropped them to a lower tier. When I spend the energy to form a 1K person WvW server alliance in a video game (?) we’ll get together and have a solid match.
I would never argue economics with an economist (that’s not my wheel house) but the economy of GW2 is certainly doing very strange things IMHO, specifically the rapid commodization of almost every goods because of the huge incentive for everyone to be a supplier with xp gains for crafting. BTW, I think I know exactly the graph you’re thinking about which demonstrates the razoring of gross margins over the life of a discontinuous innovation (aww, shades of my old business strategy class). :-)
inanycase Wazabi there is a clear trend which can be teased out in a microeconomy like this one. I’m not “picking one data point,” this is from a dozen items over the length of their existence, albeit short length. Obviously, anyone knows that money supply is hugely important but it is not the only factor, which was my main point. We can draw the supply and demand graph and go aha! Prices are going down because supply is going up! But, this is happening for nearly every product, which can be an (albeit strange) driver for deflation. This prompts me to horde all my gold because the expectation is that prices will be less next week.
It’s been rather fun discussing this and points well taken but I will probably be leaving the thread unless it’s still tops tomorrow night. Cheers.
Pragmatically, deflation occurs when the consumer price index decreases, which is exactly what is happening now. It’s not the amount of money in the economy, it’s the prices within the economy. Everything is slowly becoming a commodity (if it isn’t already).
I had the same problem, sitting on a fairly nice pot of gold.
So, I decided to craft with the hope I could turn gold into more gold. After this week, it’s clear that was a stupid idea. Prices are continually below cost and it’s no fun to have expensive merchandise tied up on the TP for days at a time.
The economy (and prices) were moving up over the first two weeks, but have definitely deflated over the last week. Exotic tailored good prices have gone from 30-40s over cost to 50-60s BELOW cost. Very strange, this has to be novel for a MMO.
The increase in cheap mats and mystic coin prices is from the new mystic forge recipes they posted to artificially increase the price, nothing else.
According to my spreadsheet (yes I have a spreadsheet :P ) it would cost around 12-13g at current TP prices (minus the sales tax fees).
I’m not on Yak’s Bend though so this is just FYI.
Make sure you gear up at whatever level you decide to begin (including upgrade slots) and continue to do that every few levels. The multipliers to 80 are really very generous.
Not totally sure – I did tailoring which is definitely not the way to go for leveling.
Wood prices are really cheap so my guess would be weaponsmith/artificer or chef.
That’s the exact situation where the anti-farm coding kicks in. If I do a few Orr runs and focus on AOE-tagging I’ll be down to 1 bag per 10 mobs (roughly) in 30 minutes. Sometimes loot goes completely dry even though I’m still getting exp.
At that point it’s best to take a break in wvw or craft.
I think SWG had “image designers” which could change your characters appearance. Doesn’t have to be that complex but was a nice feature!
From a WvW standpoint all of our elite skills are worthless. I would love to have an elite “panic button” but they all root you and take time to channel.
- Tornado is a complete waste
- Glyph Elemental survives for 2 seconds with aoe’s flying around
- Fiery Greatsword is astonishingly bad compared to our normal weapons
I wish I rolled another race (asura now) with an attractive elite skill so I could at least have something useful there.
I played a necro in beta, they are pretty ineffectual damage wise but, my god, do they survive like no other (well, before the nerfs).
Grass is always greener.
Yeah I finally realized this today after I switched from my precision to power build (where did all the crits go?)
As mentioned above, the skill worked in beta but is borked now.
