From my experience you will provide a ton of utility while having high combat mobility and fairly low but still functional dps. I generally ran a shatterer and the chronomancer only made that better with phantasms remaining meaning you get the phantasm shatter cooldown buff twice, plus alacrity on each shatter. If you are pinned down without any illusions you will really be in a bad situation, but usually you can distortion out of it. You also are viable in all content and there is a decently high skill floor and cap. It’s a very interesting class.

There is no way these changes will actually happen thankfully. Aside from that, what happened to Anet just making everything more powerful to match something else being powerful which was their original design decision.
Dodging around, stealth and shadow stepping are pretty awesome staples of the thief. You really only swap when you need a skill from the other weapon as you are able to spam skills with the thief.
You could probably avoid swapping with the thief more than other classes but cutting off half of you options will be more efficient though.
My problem with Guardians is that I liked their original virtues and they no longer represent why I even play a guardian. I play a guardian because I want to fight and shield and support my allies, but now with the dragon hunter all of my virtues are selfish. I understand that they wanted to change it up but almost every other profession got a new mechanic. Warriors got berserk mode, Engineers got a fuction gyro, Ranger got heal mode, Revenant got facets consumption, Mesmers got contiuum split and alacrity, Elementalist has element overcharge, and thief has near infinite special dodges. Necros and Guardians received changes to their mechanic, not additions. No one complains about the necro though because their abilities fall in line with their profession which is getting stronger in large scale conflicts with reduced shout cooldowns the more enemies are affected, wheras the guardian doesn’t feel protective anymore with dragon hunter.
In general, I would use virtue of justice to burn on near dead enemies, resulting in massive amounts of burning while enemies died and the level of burning grew stronger and stronger. All the while you symbols load your allies with boons and healing. Now your virtues are selfish and virtue of justices sets fire to and tethers one guy, or you fly and heal in an area. If they want to make them great they need to have some consistency with their design choices.
