I have followed this game since its announcement back in 07. I have travelled to Germany and London, to get hands on time with the game and meet the devs. Getting my art book signed by Daniel and speaking to Martin and CJ really was awesome. I have been a staunch supporter of Anet and this game, persuading friends to get it and pre-purchasing a 2 copies so that my son and I could play together with those friends.
We were sold on this game with the promises of additional content and support even though it was a pay once play forever deal. At no point was the caveat ‘if you live in the right part of the world’ added into any of this information.
Your own precedent set for a ‘one time special event’ was a cinematic followed by a repeatable dungeon, available for 24+ hours. When you chose to start the ‘finale’ at a time when my son had to get to bed, because of school the next day and when my friends that I play the game with were faced with an unplayable mess if they went near the zone, as in 2 minute freezes, DC etc, I chose to do other things with my friends. I believed (mistakenly in this case, but not unreasonably I feel) that we would get a chance to experience the content at a reasonable time the next day.
When I got up at 6am the next day I found an overflow where the event was running, with the help of some awesome forum members here. But before I could wake my son or finish the event myself, you pulled the plug on us with your update.
To clarify this means that, West Coast US got to play the event multiple times between Sunday 12 noon and 10.45 ish PM, East Coast would have been between 3PM and 1.45 AM Monday. UK it started at 8 PM and ended at 6.45 AM, so with a bit of luck ‘normal’ people over a certain age may have been able to get 1 run in. The times got even worse the further east you were, with the Australians having to be able to start around 3am on a Monday morning and having it ending approximately 1.45 on a school/work day. Surely you must see that, for anyone not based in the US, this is incredibly unfair. Even if I do get a chest for ‘participating’, I still haven’t got to experience content which I have supported with early adoption of 2 copies, plus gem purchases. You have chosen to exclude me from playing the game with my friends, based purely upon my timezone. This was not the deal presented on purchasing the game.
What should have happened with this event, to make it a ‘special one off’ is having the chest available only once per account, once the chest had been opened people should not have been able to rerun it. This could have run for 24 hours, spreading the load on servers and making content equally available to customers in all timezones.
Once you realised what a mess you had made of it, the only sensible solution was to open the event again for the other 13.25 hours of the clock. This immersion baloney could have been skirted with an asuran time portal device or whatever else you wanted to invent, disbelief has to be suspended regularly anyway. This throwing out free chests business doesn’t actually fix anything, even without the fact that it has turned into another royal mess. We want to see the content. Even though this is a buy to play game, we were told we would not get any less service than sub payers would expect. So yes we have paid for and are entitled to expect access to the content.
I want somebody to step up, apologise to people who have been excluded as well as all those let down by technical issues etc. Assure us that you have learnt from these mistakes because it isn’t apparent. Show us that you actually value our custom. Right now my plans to spend further money on gems, have been put on hold. I am not rich so £50 – £100 was a lot, but I thought it would be worth it. Now it seems I will be wasting it supporting development which will not benefit me in any way.
I am sure I am not alone in these feelings, in fact I am sure you have already lost many customers over this. You need to fix this the right way, soon and very loudly and clearly so that people can regain their lost faith in Anet. I have been a staunch supporter for 7+ years and have lost mine, so I dread to think how any newcomers must feel.

People saying this is prime time for Europe are wrong, event completion went well past that. The reason 12 noon Sunday could be their highest concurrency time is, US players all coming on then and EU players nearing the end of their time.
The comparisons to bands or child birth are laughably ridiculous. You don’t pay in advance for a band and then find out that all the good stuff is happening when you can’t be there. Work automatically allows for new parents to have time off, but not for a game.
My son needing to be in bed on a school night is more important than a game obviously, but that situation shouldn’t even be a factor, they should find a way for people from all time zones, to find a time slot in the day where they can spare 3 hours.
Copy/pasting my post from feed back to complete my views on this.
I was a paying customer, 2 copies of the game for my son and me, plus £60 on gems. But I will not pay any more, for a game which excludes us from playing content together.
Seriously this is the worst design choice ever made. Huge numbers of people for various reasons could not play at that one specific time. Then to find out that it was the best single loot giveaway in the game to date, is just adding insult to injury.
Even in GW1 days they had the sense to run big events every few hours all day. Giving us players from all over the world, whom they say they care about, a chance to find a time slot which works.
As it is now, the £100 or so I was thinking of putting into gems for xmas presents, (my son, me and a couple of friends) is going to be spent on Rift or some equally good game, which doesn’t exclude us from content.
