Playing in lower tiers is plenty fun. It’s not like the average skill on higher tiers is any better, and you can have more of and individual impact on lower tiers. It’s mostly just a non-issue though.
Also, everyone transferring to higher tier servers would ruin any upwards mobility lower tier servers could have. It’s more fun to be an underdog, and being a bandwaggoner is just lame.
If I were to transfer at all it would be to a lower tier.
I’m fairly sure paypal would charge a fee.
I realize Crystal Desert is t4, but we’re gunna be t5 soon anyway if we don’t get get some fresh blood
Invulnerably instead of stealth would be ridiculously OP. I don’t imagine anyone would want to make that change.
It appears to me that developers respond to the lowest common denominator having the loudest voice. Stealth is not a new idea; it’s a borrowed idea.
Developers are like normal people. They fall into patterns and tend to not question how things work or why they work a certain way. Ideas are simply borrowed from the people who invented them.
I agree that stealth doesn’t provide skill based game play. However; keep in mind the audience that you’re trying to convey this discussion to. They generally don’t like to think.
This post and others like it are annoying. Your argument is not strengthen by insulting people who enjoy stealth.
I respect that the OP seems to have thought this out, and I don’t feel like writing as long a reply – but I disagree. People do have to build around stealth, just as they build around other parts of the meta to mitigate and deal with them. I enjoy using stealth, and I find it fun. I disagree that it does not require skill either. Heartseeker spam is probably pretty low skill, but not stealth. Hoping in and out of it, and being aware of it is a huge part of playing many games, and this one, considering it’s a mechanic 1/4 classes have access to easily. There are defiantly decisions to be made, and there is skill/play involved in making those decisions. Both for the person who uses it and the person who is responding to it. Stealth or not, you are going to have to be able to respond quickly to burst builds…
More specifically, stealth in this game does not seem OP… For instance, four common ways for thieves(I am far more familiar with thieves than mesmers) to get into stealth:
-Shadow Refugee shows the area the thief could be in to opponents. It is very easy to shoot some AoE damage in there.
-Stealth on fall – the thief has to take damage. Being have to use your surroundings to your advantage and find a low jumping point that won’t be terrible and involves using your terrain to your advantage – defiantly a strategy that should be rewarded.
-Cloak and Dagger… Requires them to hit you. You cannot get the first strike from this. Unless of course there are NPCs around. But like I’ll get to later, it is your responsibility to be aware of this kind of thing.
-Smoke field + Leap finisher: Probably Pistol #5+heartseeker. This is another noticeable one, and although you can maintain stealth for a long time, doing this realistically in combat repeatedly is very heavy on initiative, and requires alot of skill to pull off while doing damage, even if you had infinite initiative. Not to mention the smoke field is very easy spot and AoE into.
Overall stealth either requires alot of resources to obtain, some skill, or is short lasted. Obviously I missed several, but I cannot think of a single stealth mechanic in game that is not very noticeable. Like I was saying, if you are at all aware of your surroundings you will see the thief before he stealths, and have time to respond. Burst builds are part of many MMOs. They exist because people enjoy them. And it is not unfair to sacrifice long term viability for short term damage spikes.
One thing I feel should be mentioned is that the most deadly way of initiating combat in this game, from stealth, is pretty fair. Backstab can hit hard… But like I said, you should seriously be able to spot the thief before the stealths. Weaving around in response makes it pretty hard to grab your back, and if the thief does, good. He employed some of that ‘skill’ we all worship. Although it might be more realistic to avoid the burst build all together.
Of course stealth gives advantages to the person who uses it. Virtually every game mechanic ever is designed to give advantage to the user. Not the person the user is fighting.
Honestly I just totally disagree with you OP. Stealth is fun for some people, not overpowered, and a huge part of the meta because anything that 1/4 of classes (so by extension, 1/4 players) have access to should be a huge part of the meta. Thieves might not be perfect, or stealth. But it’s really not a bad mechanic.
I agree that our F-mechanic is a bit boring. But I disagree that it isn’t on par. It isn’t versatile like others, but in terms of raw tear-kitten-up ability, Mug certainly is not weak.
Not to mention some of our steals are very powerful. Plasma-buffs, the one that causes fear, the axe spin – are three examples of some high power steals. Alot of the other ones are not too bad either.
So, ya it could be improved. But it’s not terrible. It is still very powerful with mug. I will agree I dislike how thieves are almost forced to take mug or other steal-based traits to make seem useful to them… but that is an issue unrelated to mug. Mug is still great, and our burst is still great.
Honestly, I feel like you are all being a bit ridiculous.
The only profession I’ve really been playing recently is my thief. Even with 0 damage from mug – just using it as a gap closer and for the nicer steal skills, we have incredibly high burst.
The second I ‘discovered’ mug (I had been playing without it, and was fine). I instantly felt like it was OP. It’s an instant 4-6k+ damage and gap closer. Before finding it I could down a player in seconds – but it was fair because they had time to respond as I sequenced my skills. Mug is just gravy – and ridiculous.
Not to mention it was only a 10 point trait…
Thieves relying on mug were being spoiled. The nerf could’ve been alot worse. They did not have to give us the heal on it, and it would have been fine, to be honest. Mug is still insanely good. You don’t need to use mug to initiate fights either. With stealth, and gap closer on swords and daggers, it is not hard to engage. The heal just means that for melee thieves, you can have a later fight and longer range gap closer that will make you slightly safer.
Even if you still just want to use it to initiate/damage, it is fine. It will get you right where you need to be. 1-2k damage is still very helpful.
The difference in damage is a fraction of one heartseeker, seriously.
Maybe some people will take a trait other than mug now too. Build diversity is a good thing.
I feel that OP is obviously right, and that the idea of being able to do old dailies but for no reward other than the achievement point is the best solution.
Alot of people are saying to that it doesn’t matter, but clearly it matters to some people. It is a game, if you want to compete in leaderboards or achievements that’s fine, you should be able to. If you’re willing to put in tons of time and effort to catch up you should be able to.
Honestly I feel like there is no good reason to disagree with OP. What he is saying seems self-evident to me.
The one part that might make sense is that the leaderboards would become ‘tied up’ at max points. But you have to consider the magnitude of some achievements. Yakslapper is gunna take awhile to max. There are many massive achievements that would foster ongoing competition for the forseeable future, and obviously more will be added.
Alot of the people on this thread seem to be missing the point and making analogies that are moronic in my opinion (the rank 40 spvp or whatever it was), as if some people think O kitten uggesting the achievements just be given out.
Dailies/Monthlies shouldn’t have been worth points to begin with.
Edit: To be clear, it’s kind of a non-issue to me. I don’t care about the leaderboards and I don’t have the time or desire to compete, but some people seemed to be so kitten unclear on what was actually being said.
impressive OP. must have taken some work.
In regards to SAB:
I don’t understand why people feel all content has to cater to them. If you don’t like the super adventure box, relax because some people do. It is hardly something forced on you – doing it or not has no real impact on other gameplay.
Arenanet has said that a team of eight was working on it, and a team of three was all that was there most of the time. For those who can’t do math, they have a staff of 300, so three means that for a large portion of time, /literally/ only 1% of the staff was involved.
The game attempts to cater to many demographics, and it is ridiculous to assume that all updates will be things you will enjoy.
More importantly, there is nothing immature or wrong with enjoying childish things as an adult, or older things as a kid – whatever your perspective on who should like it seems to be. Younger players that don’t like it seem to say it is aimed at older players. Older players that don’t like it seem to say it is aimed at younger players. Who cares. There is nothing wrong with enjoying something that is far from damaging or offensive. On the flipside, there is really nothing wrong with playing games instead of partying or whatever. If taking games seriously is your thing, that’s fine.
There are cool people who enjoy it, and cool people who don’t. Expecting every piece of content to be something for you is ridiculous! And saying people who don’t enjoy it are no fun or have no sense of humor is equally strange. This is really a non-impactful piece. If it actually had to do with gameplay, I could understand outrage. But considering it’s something that can totally be ignored, who gives a kitten.
Awesome idea.
Not sure if other not being able to tell what weapon you have in PvP is important enough to consider. But it would defiantly look sweet.
New weapons for my ele could be cool – we certainly could use more build diversity.
Personally I dream of a shortbow ele.
I run 10/0/30/30/0, usually S/D. Probably not as effective or competitive, but meh, it’s what I run.
