@OP Don’t read those threads if they make QQ. Your thread is actually worse than their’s in my opinion.

Nice to hear some news/plans. However, I’m not buying a word that comes from ANet until I see it in action. The Ascended gear fiasco was enough for me. Not to mention the epic fail that was Lost Shores.
I didn’t play GW1 for a gear treadmill, min/max, numbers game and every MMO I have played since has been exactly that. I had been looking forward to GW2 for a return to just playing because it was fun, enjoyable, and I liked playing around in said universe. Instead I come back to find an initially amazing title that is quickly following the same route as every other MMO.
I’m sorry but the latest update is bull crap. Ascended gear cannot possibly be the intermediary step between Exotic and Legendary when both Exotic and Legendary currently have the exact same stats and factually Ascended gear has better stats than both. This makes it a new and better tier above and beyond Legendary/Exotic. The only way the press release/blog rings true is if they then buff all the stats on Legendary items to above Ascended thus creating an even bigger amount of power creep and more of what goes against what they promised to deliver with this game. I will then “Have” to have Legendary items to compete. sigh I really had high hopes with this game and ANet has flushed them all (not solely with this decision).
Also you cannot say “we’re not building a gear treadmill” and “The Future of Items Progression: This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content.” So you’re building a gear treadmill that’s not a gear treadmill? You’re building a gear elliptical machine perhaps?
Not enough to keep a game this size running, or this wouldnt be happening.
Really?
How is Anet making money on this?
Are they selling the Ascended Gear in the gem store?
Is the new gear grind going to magically make people pay a sub fee?
Is this making them more money than concentrating on developing new cosmetics for the store?
Go ahead. I’ll wait.
People playing longer have a longer opportunity to possibly spend money. Inevitably at least one more gem purchase will be made by a player that’s only continuing to play to get their Ascended gear. At the end of the day that’s all they care about. Also, 2 words, Transmutation Stones. Yeah that’s the money maker here when they add new gear.
Not if they don’t ADD ANYTHING NEW to the store.
Also? I have 85 transmutation stones in the bank right now, and 20 fines. Every single character of mine is wearing transmuted gear. I use those things like candy, and I get 3 every time I finish a zone.
Lucky for you. It sounds like you like anecdotal evidence. So personally I have about 5 transmutation stones and I have 2 80’s and 4 25ish characters. What’s that say for the drop rate? The fact is it’s probably somewhere in the middle. The majority of players probably don’t have them like “candy” like you or the dearth of them that I have. Regardless of whether anything is added, maybe a player is getting bored grinding ascended, they already have 4 other toons some 80 some not maybe, but hey they decide to try a new profession and buy a character slot. Well there’s $10 that would have never been spent (possibly) if that player had just moved on. Same can be said for bank space, other cosmetics, etc. Simply by keeping a player around playing the game you are going to increase the likelihood that they make a purchase. You don’t just hang out in Sams Club all day and eat the free samples, inevitably the majority of people buy something.
Also, yes you do get them for map completion, but this goes back to forcing activities on a player that they may not want to engage in. Solution to avoid map completion if you find it boring and need Stones, BUY THEM!
What are you people going to say about this update when they announce fixes for everything you’ve been complaining about as well as the minor equipment upgrade?
Everyone will applaud the fixes and continue to be just as pissed off as they are now concerning changes to gear. I fail to see your point.

The new changes sound great! Can ya’ll stop QQ’ing when the game continues to get a little more challenging? Like for real.. you blew the forums up about the “challenging” Clock tower not giving you free loot. And now you’re QQ’ing about the need to go into another dungeon to have fun. What do you want? To sit in LA? Maybe they can add some chess tournaments in LA for your pleasure and you’ll stop the QQ.
How is it getting more challenging? Rezzing and running back to bosses repeatedly to defeat them does not a fun or challenging dungeon make and that’s just the start of the fail design on their previous dungeon work. Also it does not get more challenging when they buff gear strength at the same time as buffing content difficulty. That just evens things out to have higher numbers but the current difficulty would remain the same.
Also you’re missing that some people don’t want to run dungeons. I HATE DUNGEONS. I never want to HAVE to run one to remain competitive. That’s what they’re forcing me into. Sure it’s optional, but I will also optionally go play another game entirely where I can be competitive without being forced to engage in activities that I derive 0 enjoyment from.
Good idea. Only more stuff to work towards and more things to do endgame.
Good update in general.SO MANY people moan about it. WHY ? It’s optional and you don’t have to get it. People who don’t want them can just ignore and…well…don’t get it rofl….AND GET ROFLSTOMPED DUE TO NUMBERS IN WVWVW
I fixed that for you and no to anyone that actually cares about being competitive whether it’s PvE or WvWvW it’s entirely not optional. If it were that simple don’t you think everyone in the thread would have shut up after that was posted on like the first page.
It’s entirely optional for me to do anything in this game so maybe I should just hop into WvWvW in lvl 1 whites and be happy with my performance.
I don’t feel anywhere near the hatred for this move that some of you are displaying, but I do have some reservations about it.
From today’s post by Murdock:
“By adding challenging new combat mechanics to end-game content and ways to mitigate those mechanics through gear progression for high-end players, we can add personal progression without making the game feel like an endless treadmill of gear that is just out of your reach.”
Doesn’t the above statement seem a little contradictory? Even reading it in context, it doesn’t make sense to me. You create new mechanics that can only be dealt with by “gear progression” and then say that this creates a sense of personal progression without creating a gear treadmill. O_o
Am I missing something?
It is contradictory. They are adding a gear treadmill to combat the gear treadmill. It’s PR speak.
Agreed. We’re going to increase dungeon and monster difficulty. We’re then going to buff players through better gear. This =‘s challenging content how? Oh yeah it doesn’t because if dungeons/monsters are buffed and then players are then buffed it all evens out. Hence the concept of a gear treadmill.
Separate from gear I really can’t understand why ANet devs think more HP and more damage from a boss actually make something challenging. Dungeon design in this game is epic fail.
Will this be another mmo which was mis-sold to me?
My credit card will probably accuse me of fraud if I add another mmo refund to the list!
lol charge back! Do it! Unfortunately we don’t have subs to speak with so this is the only way to go.
I bought this game because I thought I could WvW without having to do PvE grind.
Please don’t suddenly change this game into something else.
You do not need gear to do WvW.
Sure you could do it naked if you wanted to…………. WTK?!?!?!
But wait a second.
I don’t like this change, but you won’t be using that gear in sPvP. You can use it in PvE and WvWvW.Guys, my gf survived to an entire WvW session (lasted 1 evening) with a lvl2 warrior and equip, without dying… will some ascended armors/weapons make difference?
It’s a 300vs300 game mode. What did she do that was worth anything? Standing around not dying at lvl 2 doesn’t mean anything. Are you seriously going to argue that your lvl 2 girlfriend brings more to the table in a fight than a lvl 80 currently decked out in Exotics. Factually you’re just wrong. If you’re fine with competing on uneven footing good for you. I’m not. I don’t play WoW because the skill ceiling is abysmally low and outside of that it’s all my numbers are bigger than yours.
And to everyone else saying “It’s 300 v 300 not 1v1” What game are you playing? I engage in small skirmishes of less than 5 per side in WvWvW all the time and certainly a ton of 1v1’s and 1v2’s. If you would actually roam and work for your team rather than just running around in a mindless zerg you might actually experience what us “complainers” are talking about.
Rofl, haters gonna hate.
It depends on how you play. You are seeking for balance in a 300v300 game mode in which both people with lvl2 equip and people with lvl80 equip can play. You’re actually searching for balance in a game mode that is NOT balanced at all.
If you like going roaming in team sized of 2 people, good for you, but it’s not the way WvW is meant to be played, i think. Btw, she has a lvl80 char, but tried to WvW with a lvl2 warrior.Anyway, I don’t know if you did actually read the message, but I don’t like this change. I wanted the game to be perfectly balanced as it was until now.
But probably your attention got struck by a whining attack..
LoL way to take my post way to personally bro.
I get that we agree against the change. However, you suggest it has no impact on WvWvW fights. That’s factually incorrect. Yes zergs decrease the impact of the change Yes your lvl 2 gf (was never saying she didn’t have an 80 lol) can survive in WvWvW. The more effective teams and groups of players will all be decked out in Ascended gear. If you’re not then you’re factually at a disadvantage.
Even taking your zerg into the equation let’s go with 300 v 300. If 200 people on one team have full Ascended and only 100 on the other who do you think will win? Even if the chances are perfectly even I should not leave a competitive fight feeling like gear or numbers lost me the battle. There’s already enough randomness to fights with things like Crits for example. Also while yes WvWvW allows you to hop in as soon as you start playing the longer the game has been out the more and more weighted it has been towards lvl 80 players (in my own experience). This will only increase over time as the player base becomes exponentially top heavy as with any MMO.
IMO if you’re running around with the Zerg you’re not playing WvWvW how it was meant to be played. I guess we’ll just have to disagree. Especially considering there’s no “correct” way to play it. But thank you for your feedback.
Hey guys,
Did you know everything in this game is optional? In fact it’s even optional for me to double click the game to play it. It’s optional for me to have it on my HDD too. It’s also optional for me to turn on my PC.
Hopefully the sarcasm is not so thick folks can’t see where I’m going with this…..
Is advertising a non loot treadmill then putting one in considered false advertising? and if so what can be done.
As I mentioned earlier get a charge back on your credit card for your purchase of the game. This will be followed by a perma-ban, but if you don’t care then w/e.
Please give us more progression and continue tiers. We also need more competitive pvp.
lol you want competitive PvP but more differentiation between players based on statted gear. True competive PvP would be as statless and gear progression-less as possible.
Doesn’t look like the Ascended gear announcement is doing NCSoft’s stock any favors today:
http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=036570.KS
Q3 finanicals came out on Nov 7th and they were 15-24% underperforming compared to Q2. That’s hilarious considering that you’d think GW2 would actually increase their performance and profitability.
All that needs to be done to make this acceptable to me is to allow for players to be able to obtain Ascended armor from Crafting, sPvP, and WvWvW (possibly other activities) instead of solely running dungeons. Being forced into running dungeons, terribly designed fail ones at that, in order to get gear is the biggest turn off to me.
The gear treadmill is also a huge turn off, but largely because I know I have to get the gear (that’s just the type of player I am, I’m competitive) and the only way to obtain it is through an activity I despise even more in this game (due to their poor design) than any other.
Anyone know where players stand legally regarding refunds of the game fee and more importantly gems?
This relates to how the product was sold and then changed, maybe its covered in some type of consumer trading act’s etc…
You might be able to get a charge back on your credit card. Depends on your card and how long ago you made the purchase. You can always tell them that you purchased a product promising to deliver one thing and they failed to fulfill on their end (this is a simplified version). Your card should reverse the charge and refund your account.
You can also expect a perma-ban from the game when you do that to. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing necessarily, but it’s probably the price you would pay.
The Manifesto was a lie.
The whole company should be ashamed.
Considering the entire Manifesto was about options, and the new gear is not mandatory, there was no lie.
It is mandatory. Hang onto your Exotics and don’t run dungeons you don’t care about to get Ascended gear. Get stomped in WvWvW and told to get good scrub by some kid who has some more stat points than you. So maybe for you it’s not mandatory, but for any competitive person it sure is.
WvW is all about the number of players. You’re individual stats don’t mean as much as you think they do. I am competitive in WvW. Have been from the get go, and levelled my characters in WvW. In the end, the +5 stats from a handful of items won’t equate to making you unstoppable. Even if you get Full Ascended gear, you still won’t benefit much. The increases in your overall pool of stats is pretty small. Even with +80 vit…. thats only 800 HP, most characters already do more than that in a single hit in WvW. Throw in conditions, crits, and the overall number of individual players, and that 800 HP means nothing at all.
That’s a straight up lie. Live and die with the zerg if you want. I engage in small skirmishes of less than 5 players all day every day. A ton of 1v1’s and 1v2’s in WvWvW. You’re right in a zerg scenario it makes no difference. Sorry you only run with the zerg. You can take a keep with only 5 people and some siege if you know what’s up.
But wait a second.

Why does everyone seem so quick to assume that ANet wants to piss of their players?
I don’t think they want to piss off their players. I think they see this as a way to keep players playing for longer and thus hopefully spending more money. However, certain players play for gear treadmills and others for their own enjoyment (of course these can combine with one another). ANet has clearly chosen the gear treadmill camp though in the hopes that it will bolster revenue. Even if this is not true they said in the past “the whole game is end game,” now they’re specifically creating end game content for a game that many players chose to play on the basis that it was not setup on that model.
Now when you make a character in GW2, just like all the MMOs it was trying to be different from, you need to power level your way to 80 and deck yourself out in full ascended otherwise you’re not “playing it right” because everyone knows in an MMO the real game is at “endgame.” Can’t wait for iLevel and gear checks to make their way into this game.
100% disappointed. Implementing this gear treadmill runs entirely counter to the manifesto and ideals you put forth as a company. I feel lied to as a customer, but that may be an exagerration and a misuse of the term lying.
I am saddened that you have caved into the WoW/gear progression crowd and have now turned me off to one of my favorite games of all time. A game I waited with baited breath for 6 years to play and you ruined it. The lack of a need to grind past a certain point was a high selling point of this game to me and something I derived great enjoyment from. I like having a “finished” character if you will. This allows me to play and live in the world of Tyria as my avatar. I’m no roleplayer here, but the point of an MMO is to have a living, breathing world to take part in not a never ending gear treadmill that forces you into a narrow set of activities just to advance. It also allows me to play what I want when I want. If I want to live in WvWvW I ought to be able to without sacrificing being on even footing with someone that fights against scripted monsters in an instanced environment.
Also might as well throw out that this gear is coming through dungeons from what I’ve seen and so far the dungeons are the weakest point in the game (for me). They’re TERRIBLE. I have no interest in running dungeons but will now be forced to in order to compete outside of PvE and more specifically in WvWvW. What this really means is I will go play another game that actually allows me to have fun rather than be forced into an activity I don’t enjoy just to keep up. But, hey ANet doesn’t need to give 2 cares about me playing any more because it’s a B2P title and they already got my money for the box. They can pull an entire SWG NGE here if they wanted to and it wouldn’t affect them one bit because they don’t have subscribers to maintain or cater to.
I always held ANet in good graces. Since the launch of GW2 they have plummetted in my opinion. While they may be better than some other companies. I am disgusted by some of the design decisions, disappointed with slow updates, a lack of any effective class balancing (so far it feels like it’s been handled with a battle axe rather than a scalpel), the wretched customer service, and the tyrannical moderation of the forums.
*If anyone here hasn’t you may want to take a look at the latest NCSoft financials, because as well as GW2 may have sold and be making revenue but it isn’t good enough. Q3 (post GW2 launch) NCsoft performed more poorly than Q2. You know what that means time to copy WoW to get those players pumping out the money.
Here’s the link to those reports: http://global.ncsoft.com/global/ir/earnings.aspx
Next race will clearly be Tengu. Dominion of Winds will clearly be their starter zone.
And it’s still YOU behind the character. An analogy such as the one you’ve used doesn’t work, because it has no place here, it’s apples to oranges. Not to mention, if you do a good deed and get rewarded, you can choose what to do with that reward — including giving it to a friend/relative.
QFT
“brokeit: Definitely no. Karma is awarded and spent based on your characters influence in the area. A new character doesn’t have that influence because it has not done anything in that area. The most stretch i’d see being useful would be like buying account bound karma tokens so you can transfer say 500 karma at the cost of like 1000 karma.”
I don’t see how karma has anything to do with “areas” at all. I can earn 100000000000000 Karma in the starter zone and go spend it in the level 80 Zone if I want to. The only requirement is that you’re able to physically get to the Karma vendor.
a.) Allow players to Q for all WvWvW queue’s simultaneously.
b.) Allow me to Q for WvWvW on a different character from the one I am currently
playing. Ex: I really want to WvWvW on my 80 Ranger, but I also want to level my Ele.
Let me Q for WvWvW on the Ranger while playing my Ele.
1.) Account-bound Karma – This would reduce the overall grindy feel of endgame because I could be using karma gained from leveling alts to buy my lvl 80 exotics.
The professions in this game are a great deal of fun and as such I would like to eventually have leveled all of the professions to 80. However, in order to do this I have to sacrifice all progression on my capped characters in order to level alts. While this may be how things have traditionally worked in other MMO’s this could be another area where ANet breaks the mold. This expands endgame progression options to now include leveling alts because you can continue to make progress (albeit significantly slower) on your capped character while engaged in said activity.
Currently I can use the money and crafting materials obtained on my alt in order to advance my capped character and I believe sPvP currency is also account bound, so why not Karma as well?
As an example, I understand I should be playing my Ranger to get more advanced stuff for my Ranger, but I think it would be nice if I could decide I want to play/level my Thief for fun while still being able to progress on my Ranger.
