Can we assume the dearth of remarks from Anet employees signals the death of interest on this topic? I assure you for me it has continued unabated and even gotten worse. I have replaced my computer, my router, and the wiring in my house to that router, in the time frame since I first joined this little club here. I will say again, the best results come from people who own the problem. So; Anet, please…pick someone that will work with you, and create whatever small program you need to monitor quality of service for the client, and tweak it after getting input from that special someone, until you determine unequivocally what “their” issue is. Then report back to us here, so that hopefully all of us can learn from your experience. I would like to think its likely that a company whose bread and butter rides on the quality of connection on the greater internet would have more technical knowledge, connections, and resources to track these problems down that your average user out here. Own the problem and be active in the solution, don’t pass the buck to ISP’s or Level 3 carriers.

I merely wanted to make the point that pigeonholing people who suffer this disconnect as a cranky minority is just silly and absurd. The whole point of having a tech support forum is for users with issues to air them, and hopefully get help.

My ludicrous suspicions were an attempt on my part to be equally absurd and hopefully gain the ire of someone in arena net who would (although angry at me) respond in some fashion to this groups entreaties.

Finally, why even bother with the charade of trace routes and such, if once we do all the work, people just throw up their hands and say: “whats a person to do?” Let’s just cut through the blue smoke and mirrors and say: “We know this is a problem, but we really have no idea what can be done about it.”

Well, a couple of things. I am a retiree from a major internet provider, and spent the last 8 years of my career there as a tech support employee for people with internet problems. I just want to say, that while I respect everyone who posts on these forums, I find some folks who state with conviction that the problem is absolutely here, or absolutely there, are suffering from short term exuberance over what seemed to have worked for them. Possibly some of them are even right. I think the fact that they may be right comes secondary to the equal likelihood that their information is anecdotal, and irrelevant to other peoples issues.

Second, the suggestion that this is a small subset of users having this problem so that somehow excludes Arena net from the list of possible trouble spots. I have found complaints sprinkled through this forum, as well as other forums on fan sites. The idea that some of us continue to rail on, while others just give up on this game and move on, should get a pat on the back, not used against us as being a minority.

Finally, and most kitten ing of all, the complete indifference (or perhaps intentional ignorance) of Arena net in the issue makes it just as plausible that something more sinister on their part might be going on. The truth is no-one knows what is going on here except perhaps person or persons directly responsible for it. It would be just as plausible to suggest Arena net has some sort of data cap or meter on its users, and once a user surpasses a certain amount of game time, they begin to suffer this problem.

I am not stating that is what is happening, I am just suggesting that it is as valid an explanation as any I have seen in this forum. I had a guild mate that spent more time in the game than anyone else, and within the past year began to complain of this very problem. It continued to get worse and worse, and she finally gave up on the game when she could not stay on line for more than five minutes at a time. All the while she had problems, the rest of us would tell her our connections seemed stable, and we were having no trouble.

Well, I have this trouble now, and i have it frequently. You can read above to see some of the things I have tried to resolve the issue and none of them has any lasting effect. Yesterday, I replaced the modem and gateway I was using with a brand new one. I thought it might cut down on translations between IPV4 and IPV6. The new gateway costs 100 dollars. Guess what. No impact at all. I still have the same problem.

I have guild wars 2 installed on 3 computers in my home, and it fails the same way on each of the 3. So once again, I ask, why can’t Arena net expand on exactly what this error code means, or subdivide it into smaller categories that are less vague so that we and anyone else can actually troubleshoot these problems in a more rational way than just wringing our hands in this forum, rather than spending serious coin (and time) on solutions that seem little more than red herrings.

Well, all very interesting, but here is what i know to date. I have examined my start-up menu to see what programs run on start-up, and have eliminated all but bare bones stuff. I have modified my update process’ on my software, to not download updates in the background, because it was suggested that such things steal processor time. I run no other programs (when i am having trouble) like a browser to also free up the processor. I have 2 shortcuts to guild wars 2, one is set to run normally, the other is set for -clientport 443. My thinking is, if i experience trouble, i can swap to the alternate to see if it stops the problem. I have run ping-plotter software with little success since some servers do not respond to ping-plotter queries, and can falsely look like a fail when they are operating fine. I am troubled by the vagueness of this error code. All it appears to be telling us, is that the client program running on our machine lost connection with the Arena-net server. The ping plotter program seems nothing more than a ploy by arena-net to distract us from their server being the issue. Even if I knew of a node on the greater internet that was blocking my traffic, and presumably every other gamers it came across, who will go to bat for me against that server? Arena-net seems to think it should be my ISP. My impression is that traffic load somewhere is effecting my connectivity. There are times where i can play for several hours uninterrupted. There are times where i am disconnected every 4 or 5 minutes for something approaching an hour or more, while i try everything i can think of to diagnose a cause. The fact that connectivity is a bigger issue when testing is going on, or some event is in progress, suggests an issue with Arena-net servers more that the greater internet. I find it hard to imagine that a company whose market exists largely on the internet; would not monitor the connection to the internet carefully, and match servers to the load. Just like a brick and mortar store would not build a store out in the countryside, with no roads connecting it to its best markets. This is why I have asked before and am asking now for arena-net to just pick somebody with this problem, and use your network people to actually get to the bottom of the issue, and report back to the rest of us the details of what you found, so that we might all learn how it was fixed.

By the way, the impression I have of the -clientport option was a response to some internet providers classifying gaming packets as lowest priority when traffic was peaking on their servers. Each packet that travels over the internet has a lifespan, which counts down each time it passes a node along its route. If the counter reaches zero the packet is discarded since its originator deems it worthless at that point. Additionally, packets aimed at ports which are default gaming ports can be essentially put on the back burner or simply discarded to clear up bottlenecks for packets deemed more essential. The gaming industry has tried adding port 80 and now port 443 to hopefully fool these servers into thinking their packets are not gaming packets.

Would it be a challenge to write some small diagnostic for the client that would run whenever it detects the connection loss to take a snapshot of where the fail was at that moment with a ping, and then record the results in a log to be examined by someone who knows what they are looking at?

AAAARRRRRRRRGHHHHHH!!!! I just typed an insightful essay about the frustrations of this issue, to remind you gentle people at ANET that it did not just go away, and it got erased before I could post it. Can we look into this issue or at least subdivide more so that I don’t have to re-invent the internet to fix the problem. Can we also fix the search feature on the forum so I can actually find relevant posts without having to go to google?

This has been happening to me as well. I did submit a ticket on it and they’ve asked me to run the diagnostic and submit it to support. After reading all your posts, this does not give me much hope. I get disconnected daily anywhere from a couple to a couple dozen times. I agree with all the sentiments about this killing the enjoyment of this game, particularly when the disconnect comes near the end of a long hard personal storyline, so I get to repeat the episode again and again and again.

I have found the same bug as Vishnou. The Phantasmal Residue is only present on the first character I completed ‘Plan of Attack’ on, and I am quite certain I spoke to Rox in each case, when our character says: “Rytlock will be okay. He’s been through worse. But that doesn’t mean I won’t worry until he’s back.”

The wiki itself refers to the option to receive the residue only being available if you haven’t got one yet.

Seems odd that we can get all the other items but not this one.

Hmmm, not sure if this is important, but I am having the same bug, Zott is alive but not moving at the edge of the green circle area underwater, I have the one NPC a Vigil Warmaster who I did revive, I’ve killed everything on the beach, except for the trebuchets, which I cannot target.

I returned to where Zott and the deceased Elli are, killed a few more foes, all to no effect.

The thing that I have, which no-one else has mentioned, is that I still have an enemy ship firing at me. Perhaps I need to complete its destruction, before going into the water?

Zott, when I approach him just says “I knew something like this would happen. Why didn’t she listen to me?” and my only response is “Stay calm. We just need to find her.”

just weighing in again, im amazed this has been clunking along for so long. I am stuck at 80/83 on Hero Achievements, and yet the hint icon at upper left of my screen shows i have completed everyone.

Seems almost like for a brief period, the achievement counter stopped counting, while everything else just ticked along, since we have a variety of levels according to Hero screen (78/83, 80/83, 81/83, and 82/83) Can’t agree more with the sentiments, that this has been kicking around for an awfully long time, sure would be nice to see it corrected.

Lionguard Lyns gone - not a fair warning?

Phatt Dude.7538

Ok, I am among those who were outraged to discover Lyns gone, and admit, I tend not to get my info from the forums, primarily because it is not organized like wiki is. My question today is: “Is it over?” I’ve waited patiently while impassioned players, made their case for restoring Lyns, and read all the cynical responses, essentially saying: "really? more people who didnt read the forum??? OMG!!!!

But its all, it seems for naught, because anet folks are no longer weighing in on the issue. So does that mean, its ok to unload remaining CCC’s. Might I add, CCC’s that have a big zero face value.

Perhaps going forward, when Arenanet discovers some other valuable in the game has somehow been used and abused, they could give the soon to be worthless items some value at the merchant at least?

More importantly, it would be nice, if since we are in a fantasy world here, Anet would try to use some wisdom in future, to not allow people who exploit the game to use arenanet’s own hand to get the last laugh on honest players when our riches get marked down to zero.

Just because counterfitters exist in real life does not mean its appropriate for governments to come out and state that as of tomorrow, dollars, or euros, or whatever other cash equivalent has no value.

Perhaps its possible too, to change the icons, of items that are soon to be removed, into say….a little man with a construction hat on. That way, players glancing at their inventories, would know immediately something is up, and go looking for the facts.

I hope you are reading this up there!!

Nicer still would be some sort of central list, that would say, these items will absolutely have no use going forward in the game. This list might include things like: Map Fragment and Mysterious Soggy Bag from the Lost Shore prelude content. Maybe it includes, Mystical Cogs, Stuffing, and Glue??? You might even insert a small shop somewhere in the game for orphaned items in game, with a curator looking to acquire rare items. So that boobs like me might not feel so sad, so often, when we discover some new exploit, has destroyed our in game wealth, which is often created with the days of our lives, the most irreplaceable commodity in the game.

OK, I admit I am late to the party here, but just wanted to alert Anet, this is still an issue. According to the hint icon in the upper left of my screen, there are 87 hints, and all of them have a check mark next to them. If I look under the achievement tab on my hero screen, the hero achievement reports that I have 82/83 hints completed. Not that I think it matters, but I am on Sorrow’s Furnace server.

Jeffrey Vaughn, just wanted to say thank you, not just for your continued interest in this issue, but for the cool calm collected way you have conducted yourself.

During the Superbowl we had a party at my house. One guy had a flat tire when it was time to go home. Our plan was to use a compressor with a bad air hose to fix it. I explained to him, we had to take care because of the faulty hose, then started setting the compressor up and getting lighting so we could work.

One by one our other guests came out, evaluated the situation, and added their helpful suggestions. I had to re-explain the bad hose 3 times to newcomers, before I could get the compressor running, and just as I was about to switch it on while holding the hose just right, to prevent his tire from going completely flat, the fellow with the bad tire yelled: “this things never gonna work if you don’t switch it on!” I just glared at him, thinking, “Hey! My tires are well maintained, and I don’t find myself out on a cold night with a flat tire!”

We pumped the tire back up and got him roadworthy. He chose to stand over us and regale us with what a fine compressor he had at home, and how this would be a synch if we were in his garage, while I was kneeling on cold concrete in freezing conditions fixing his problem.

When his car was roadworthy, he went back inside my house, and disparaged my compressor and lighting in front of lady guests, while I picked up outside. He came back out with his wife, and left without a good night, or a thank you, nearly hitting one of my trees.

I said nothing, but secretly wished he would crash and burn on his way home.

I just want to say, it does not go unnoticed that you have treated each of us as if we were the first to discover this problem, and responded to individual quandaries and complaints in a way that suggests an advanced sense of ownership of the task, and the care of our sometimes huddled masses. Thank you very much, I’ll throw another log on the fire for you up by Krennak’s Homestead, so you can warm your weary bones. You have my gratitude and my respect sir, you will do well in all your endeavors.

Just a thought, I know when I finished all the waypoints, vistas, skill points, and points of interest, I thought I was done, and was made aware of the Explorer Achievements Tab, under which the first five items are Explorer achievements for Krytan, Orr, Maguuma, Shiverpeak, and Ascalon. Each of the five are subdivided into ‘areas’ and to my surprise, I had not covered all of the areas for each zone. It was only rectified by a careful study of each zones maps, where I had missed some of the jumping puzzles, or zones that really had nothing of interest in them, but they existed just the same.

Ulfred the Ice Carver in Wayfarer's Foothills

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Phatt Dude.7538

Phatt Dude.7538

Ok, this event is in Wayfarer’s Hills near Grawlenfjord Waypoint, you meet Ulfred next to the river with his friend, and you accompany him into the caves (the Grekvelnn Burrows) to harvest ice so he can carve a new “god” for the local grawl.

My server is Sorrow’s Furnace.

It appears this event has been bugged again. When I arrived here today, the grawl were peaceful, suggesting that Ulfred had already carved his statue. However, once in the Burrows, there is no statue, and I found Ulfred dead on the floor. I resurrected him, and he started walking around talking about how he needed ice for his sculture and attacking the ice elementals nearby. I aided in the fight, picking up ice along the way, and at several intervals stopped Ulfred and was given the option to give him the ice I had collected. Clicking that option tho, had no effect, the ice stayed in my inventory, and Ulfred just walked away toward the next bunch of elementals.

There was no indication of any event taking place (one would expect the event of collecting ice where Ulfred stayed put on the map under an orange bushel basket indicative of a collection event). Left to his own devices Ulfred roams around fighting elementals until they kill him again. He seems locked in a fixed loop on the map, and does not wander far from it.

So, I know a big problem with fixing these things is figuring out how they broke in the first place. With events in their current disarray, the first things that come to my mind are that perhaps in the wee small hours of the night, someone may actually get Ulfred up to the cave, and then walk away and leave him to his own devices. If the grawl nearby were eliminated, he might have even started his collection event, but what happens if no-one is there? Does the event time out, and if so, what happens to Ulfred? Assuming no active players there, it might be at this point that he gets locked into the loop he is in now. Can Ulfred make his way to the Burrows unaided, then once there, be killed by the grawl and/or the elementals, before his collection event begins? If so, how do the grawl become peaceful?

Another possibility, imagine after the event string ends, and the statue is present. Is there anytime at all the Ulfred is able to roam around Grawlenfjord, where he might be lured into the Burrows by a player actually trying to bug the event, and once in there, he gets trapped by the ice elementals?

It seems like any of these are possible, but all of them could be eliminated with more supervision of Ulfred. Seems like he should be off the floor except when his events are waiting to be activated, or active. It would seem too that if the collection event times out due to lack of participation, that Ulfred should be removed and reset.

I think a glance at the logic tree of the events might give hints to where the broken branch is. How long does the statue remain after it is carved and does its disappearance trigger the grawl becoming unfriendly?

Hope this helps.

I’ve continued looking, and it appears the “Defend Ulfred” quest has also been restored on Sorrow’s Furnace. It was the quest where Ulfred carves an Ice Idol in the shape of a Norn for the grawl to worship. It had been hung up with Ulfred hopelessly stuck in caves, but is now working as well. Thank you very much again.

The update Wednesday evening, appears to have repaired the problem with the maw string of event, and Rani’s snowman army, in the Sorrow’s Furnace world server. At approximately 8:30PM EST, Brogun emerged from the lodge to see what was up with the Grawl becoming more aggressive. I followed the event thru to its end, and it ran smoothly without a hitch. Rani’s army event came up in the middle of the last event of the Frozen Maw, and I helped to complete that, as well as the event following where a grawl shaman turns the snowman army back on Rani’s. We destroyed the army before they moved much from their spots. So, thank you very much for the fix.

Aside from Jeffrey Vaughn’s interest in this topic, I find the silence from support to be deafening. I’ve read in some of the other veins on the forum that some feel the rewards for the Frozen Maw event were too rich, and in the grand scheme of things destructive to the game economy. I’ve read complaints that Wayfarer’s is frequently filled with level 80’s who belong (sic) in Orr, or somewhere else other than starter zones. Now with the much anticipated content add coming, the statement that primary zones effected will be Wayfarer’s and Diessa Plateau, and a suggestion that dailies will now be rotational, to spur interest in the rest of the map, I am left wondering if the Frozen Maw event being bugged right now is merely a symptom of Anet’s solution to what some see as a problem. I don’t really have a problem with that, if that is in fact what is going on. I wish if that were the case, someone aside from Jeffrey would weigh in and say so. We could then all go on our way knowing the cause and duration of the problem. We would willing endure the “Pardon our Dust” signs while our beloved game was being improved.

I do feel I need to respond to critics of the status quo here too. I am one of the level 80 people who frequent Wayfarer’s. I bring other people, guild mates and total strangers, to Wayfarer’s because of the rich content, and balance of rewards to effort. I think exchanges between level 80’s and level 5’s is part of what makes this game great. The level 80’s get an easy shot in the arm that they have helped and inspired someone to stay in the game and develop a strong character, and the level 5’s (we hope) get a sense of the ethics of trust and helping the game instills. The remarks about rewards destroying the games economy fall flat on me, since largely my experience with these rewards is a quick trip to the merchant to convert them to cash, so that I can buy things to make armor and weapons that I feel are a custom fit for my characters. I seldom use armor from drops to cloth my characters, instead I equip them by learning all eight crafts which further fuels the games economy.

The continued failure of this set of events, coupled with some of the posts I’ve read from my fellow game-players and a fertile imagination, are causing more than a little concern that Maw even when it gets fixed will not be the Maw we all know and love. Searching for remarks about this breakdown, I’ve seen some remarks about the reward being too much for such a low level area. Even some complaints about the number of level 80 players that frequent Wayfarer’s for these rewards. I hope, that you guys don’t nerf this event, my guild-mates and I love to meet up for it when dailies reset, and its one of the things we can all group up on, because it is fairly short duration, so its not hard to get 5 people to commit to coming along. I hope that the duration of the outage is not an indication of it’s importance to you guys, and simply that you are combining its fix with the new content that is about to emerge.

For 3 Days now, the Frozen Maw meta-event is completely stalled. Scholar Brogun is standing in front of the dragon totem, in good health, and there are no nearby grawl, ice elementals, or shaman interacting with him in any way. The event “Collect armor scraps and bring them to Rani so he can build a snowman army to scare the grawl” is also hung up, since the same grawl seem to run both event strings. The entire maw string is not happening since Brogan is not returning to the lodge. So everything from protecting Tor the Tall’s supplies, to killing eh shaman chief simply doesnt start. Rani’s snow army has been built, but the grawl who usually comes by and animates then and dispatches them to attack the lodge never shows up either. My server is Sorrow’s Furnace.
