Off my own back I figured I’d do a recruitment post for RoS!

We are a community of WvW players who’ve been through the ringer with transfers to/from the server. There is a core however who have been there since the beginning who stay for the laughs and spirit of our server – hard to find nowadays with everyone jumping ship but hey; if you are going to jump come to us

We have fought our way up to 22nd rank which, for the number of players we have, is a testament to our team. If you look at this weeks matchup, Dzag and Fort Rank you can see us getting beat but this is mainly a nightcap/numbers issue. We simply do not have the numbers to compete against multiple blobs on multiple maps. There are guilds on these servers which outman our entire zerg! Every man counts and few seem to be able to handle this.

There are loads of servers going and they all offer you lots of things but surmia offers a chance to test your mettle by making a difference. The fights are hard but we have a laugh whilst kicking some kitten .

In that case there needs to be some additional thinking on megaserver; blocking /join and /invite to enemies presumably was done for a reason and megaservers will do nothing but offer a way around that.

How these things don’t get thought of for features in development for months….it’s cool to communicate cross server but there needs to be a limit for current WvW matchups.

Still not seeing anything specific about megaservers NOT allowing people from combatant servers to be placed inside the same instance.

Dev post doesn’t address this.

Patch notes don’t address this.

As per my original question: can people from a current wvw matchup be zoned into any of the megaserver enabled zones together?

As the plan is to extend to other zones it is a valid concern anet needs to bare in mind.

And without a source for B I’d still like a link or confirmation of how that will work.

Edit: actually, point B is demonstrably false; I was zoned in Black Citadel with FR and DE guilds so it is affecting capital cities right now.

First log on this morning and pve is looking bristling with people, gg. Simple question: does the megaserver prevent people from currently running WvW matchups being zoned into the same instance in pve?

I can foresee issues with calling for reinforcements from pve and general server organisation if the /m chat crosses that border. Servers with low WvW pop need all the help we can get and i cant see anything about this on dulfy etc.

Someone disconnected on an organised community raid tonight. They reconnected and were faced with a queue of 1. Many of us lost monocles and had to steady ourselves against nearby furniture. We missed a static buff as a result of this dc/queue.

For the love of jebus people, stop transferring to RoS – These queues at prime time are ridiculous and we really love swiftness.

For running away, i’m gonna say matter of perspective : i’ve seen no fights (i’m a roamer) where FR ran away nor RoS and sometimes I read commanders telling to say out of combat to wp and defend <insert objective name here>. Like u most of the time we only have one zerg + about 10 peoples at each map doing daily/ roaming/ crafting (speaking at off peak time here).

Of course it’s a matter of perspective. Like, for example, if we play a video of this matchup in reverse we can see all of FR teleporting to the battle and running backwards towards the enemy.

[Rehashing all the classic arguments]

What is that? an FR player apparently claiming we run in +60 man zerg (note: singular)? Why would we do that?

Well Charlie, pull up a seat and I’ll try to explain it.

You see Charlie, the heart of the FR player is a very complex thing. Sometimes they run from small 5 men groups. RoS does not call for more people on teamspeak we genuinely call for FR to stop running away from a fight. This is not a game of trying to KILL the enemy, this is a game of attempting to get them into combat so they cannot run away or waypoint to safety.

But Charlie, there is a price to pay for this. To combat the ridiculous (40 man zerg at 2am just to take Aldons last night? yes, it happened) numbers put forward by FR you need approximately half the number ourselves. This gives the apparent illusion of a RoS zerg EVERYWHERE which yes, at times happens, but given our thin numbers in comparison ITS THE SAME ZERG THAT KILLS YOUR ZERG ON ALL OUR MAPS.

We on RoS have been outmanned all week but you still cannot get any kind of lead on us. Excuse me if my words get sharp and pointed for a minute but FR has no noticeable skill apart from herding up like sheep.

FR has been held to a close draw by a server with much lower population. If you want to gloat over that feel free my friend. We’ve been rolling in loot bags all week. Well, when we can catch your players before they run that is. Actually, that’s FR’s speciality. Running away.

Dxtory is awesome but that’s a two stage process of record/transcode rather than OBS’s transcode/upload. I wouldn’t be sure a gfx card upgrade would help that unless OBS’s codecs can offload the transcode to the video card (NVEnc in OBS requested here: http://obsproject.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5036)

This is more specifically the issue we are seeing. Cannot upgrade SM as no supplies from either camp will even walk the route towards it.

With some semblance of civility returned to this thread, we’d like to pass a GG to GH for this amazing SM lord room attempt. You can imagine the screams on TS as this happened!

A couple seconds later and we’d have been sweeping the south and the outcome would have been completely different.

This thread is just too heated everyone. Chill pills all around.

Clearly we have a lot of dedicated players on the three servers with varying viewpoints who are all trying to put across their point – the scores are what the scores are and nobody can argue this match up hasn’t been a lot of fun. Fun; which at the end of the day is why any of us are here and not to throw words at each other. Save the fighting for the WvW maps!

I would like to point out, however, the fact that you fixate on a non-native English speaker’s grammar, made my day.

Absolutely agree. Lets focus more on the circumstances surrounding the recapture of garrison at 5:45 today in WSR’s borderland. There was mention of a secret gate into garrison by the delightful representative from a guild I won’t mention who we talked to from WSR. Myself and a guildie are perplexed by the ability to get to inner garrison without the gate being down. We specifically asked if he stayed in garrison for 1.5 hours undetected and he answered negative….

More suspicious was the subsequent killing of this individual mesmer and the apparent resurrection and reappearance of the individual miraculously inside garrison mear moments later! I’m not a fan of religion guys but HOLY MOLY we have a real life Jesus here! The only question I have is, if there was another gate open into inner why was the WSR zerg hitting the inner north gate ^^

Ilesyt has some really good points in there.

We don’t want a massive alliance or guild to move to Surmia. We don’t roll glass cannons because we are usually out manned and you will die – but hey at least there is no repair bill now! We need people who fight in teams and know how to defend. We need people who know how to utilise siege and read the map. Small groups are what allows Surmia to punch above its weight.

All Surmians have stories of protecting or capturing objectives against the odds. You haven’t lived until you’ve 5 manned your way into stonemist! Once the dust settles after the WvW Patch we will find everyone’s numbers return to normal but Surmia really offers an experience unlike most other servers. We are where we are by the actions of a group of dedicated, battle hardened warriors who have persevered though hard times; both drama and WvW based.

If you want to be another green dot in a field of green dots there are many other servers to chose from, that is your prerogative. For those who value real challenges and real battles a spot awaits you with your peers on our front lines.

The last thing RoS needs is more people at this point.

^^ that right there my friend is the core problem. Guilds who have stayed on RoS since release and stuck with a server constrained in so many ways tossed aside by the fallout of an alliance disintegrating. It was the job of the new people to integrate with the RoS inhabitants; this move is nothing short of an invasion and it’s destroy(ing)ed a community. Where is the attempt for the outsiders to work WITH the guilds already on RoS?? Lost in a puff of kitten.

And fissue of woe are collateral damage. There had been a real surge from them over the last month and they were beginning to hold their ground against RoS/vabbi. I know it’s probably an alien concept to some but WvW should be about the fun in fighting not just playing the numbers game. The fighting was always tough in the bottom bracket. Now there is nothing but zerg.

DZ garrison attack with all 3 servers taking a corner was the best fighting i’ve had in WvW. RoS attacking water gate, UW & DZ at the top sides. So much fun, then fending off two counter attacks; UW to the west and DZ to the east with two pushes- we lost it because of no supply but we took that place and defended twice

The floor of the lords room looked like the battleground from lord of the rings by the time we finished in there- glorious!

I’ve definitely run into the middle of more enemy players following this change. At the same time it’s also unhelpful to have our forces invisible because you don’t really know how much backup you have. And I wont mention being screamed at for a portal into a target from people who you cannot see on the radar!

It’s a tricky problem and one I’ve seen cause a fair amount of ignorance about the realities of the technology available be spouted about on the forum . Culling will always be necessary so calls for it to be abandoned are silly – if the server sent the movement of every player on your radar to you the bandwidth usage would be ridiculous. If they up the amount of bandwidth per player then more people on bad links will be unhappy as their experience is reduced. Network load will increase on the server and increase everyone’s latency. Throwing more hardware at a problem will only get you so far when you deal with systems of this size.

I do not envy Anet the task of making an acceptable solution to this challenge. This is a situation where an optimum solution for all players is not attainable – reaching a point where an acceptable solution is provided to a high majority of players is the best we can realistically expect. Nobody can deny the scale of battle is right up there with the best any MMO can offer – the fact I can see so many people, so many spells, PVE mobs, siege equipment and chat all at the same time is very impressive. But nobody will ever be happy with that It’s the nature of technology to want more.

Indeed Bogey. It’s understandably frustrating when things don’t go to plan but the bigger fight is with morale/motivation for our players. Doing something is always better than doing nothing; even if it’s suboptimal. It shows initiative, commitment and willingness to contribute – the basic building blocks of any successful team. We need to harness these to drive players forward to WANT to learn the best approach, the most effective tactics – the way to win. Some really basic psychology can make a big difference; positive feedback will make people likely to want to participate more. As will sucking it up and taking the blame – as a manager IRL I end up taking it in the neck for my subordinates failures but that is how it should be. Deflect fault/blame, reinforce good aspects and develop by demonstrating better approaches.

WvW snuck up on me as I really didn’t imagine I’d enjoy it given my distaste for MMO PVP in general. But I think Anet has produced something quite special even taking the various issues into account. I’m no General Custer and I think the long term commanders we have are brilliant and the success we have is in no small part due to this effort. Hats off to all of you.

It has become increasingly clear however over the last 3-4 matchups that there are a few limiting factors reducing the impact of these efforts. I’d like to discuss what we can do to align the talent and dedication on hand to moving RoS up in terms of both player reward/satisfaction and standing in the ranks.

These are off the top of my head topics that I’d be keen to hear the opinion of any RoS’er on:

a) Server attrition

Nothing wrong with moving server to seek out fame and fortune. Some of us just ain’t built that way though. It seems like an almost self fulfilling prophecy that people will abandon ship in search of greener pastures. How can we raise morale? Better teamwork, feeling of making a difference by contributing to a victory (and i mean taking a camp/tower/keep here)? Similarly we can turn this on it’s head and attempt to attract people fed up of queues to RoS – this lives or dies on organising chaos! Lets imagine for a minute that Anet does something about outmanned

b) Lone gunman & PVE farming

Again absolutely valid approach to the game – they wouldn’t have nodes if it wasn’t meant for farming. The lone gunman approach to WvW doesn’t really work as the entire endeavour is based on teamwork. The symptom of this is in team chat – plenty of instructions but perhaps not the buy in necessary to carry the plan out without persuading people to turn on, read and contribute to team chat. If we could organise multiple 5-10 man teams however the lone gunmen can be folded into an effective force for harassing the enemy! I certainly think there are communication related issues with WvW itself that needs attention from Anet here – If a squad could be formed by anyone and the leader could join a commanders comm channel that would be very very useful for passing tactics around. Any ideas on turning lone gunmen into a force are welcomed!

c) Siege contribution / activities

Yep, nobody LIKES to buy siege but it is necessary to make an impact. WvW is designed to reward you in multiple ways and certainly nobody can complain about cash when we are actively capping locations. It doesn’t hurt to keep a stock of arrow carts/flame rams as a minimum – the cost is low but they are the staple of any assault. The jumping puzzle should be on everyones radar when available to get free plans! Keep an eye on chat for a friendly mesmer At the very least handing over plans to a commander for use will feedback to the effort and improve the chances of victory for everyone. The main problems we see here however are visible in chat – players capping a location for their guild which has no buffs or benefits and supply/upgrade capability being taken from locations they shouldn’t. It’s undoubtedly by design that the terrain in WvW takes time to negotiate and NOBODY likes running around but we need to find a proactive way to promote people taking the extra time to run to a camp. Again perhaps Anet needs to step in – a speed buff/token amount of karma/xp/cash when collecting supplies from a camp vs tower/keep? Reward the good vs demotivating someone in chat for trying to help. We need to stop chewing people a new one when a non-optimal move is made too – in fighting helps no-one.

d) Improving player effectiveness

Strong as the weakest link and all that – I have to say that in the face of larger numbers we pack a punch when we stand our ground. The lack of orbs is very visible against our current world leader – smaller forces ARE capable of pushing back and holding larger numbers. Look how long we farmed badges against WS in the tower outside their BL spawn point last night! We have some very aggressive players but it feels like some are reluctant to push when a gap in the defence is opened. Building teamwork should be the answer here just as it is in real warfare but how do we persuade the fight rather than flight response?

That’s the top of the head for now and a bit rambly! As stated I’m no expert but I’m usually pretty good at annoying people enough to start a dialogue! We all want WvW to be productive for us, our guildies and our fellow RoS’ers – there are limitation we need to learn to live with but prime time should be war crime time for our WvW players ALL COMMENTS/DISCUSSION WELCOME!

RoS was matched with Drakkar before Dragonzur; our scoring was identical to WR it would appear. High occupancy and night coverage is guaranteed on language specific servers as it focuses people together from a geographic region making migrations unlikely and unnecessary in most cases.

It’s the demoralising factor that’s the real challenge here. When a fight is not fair, and there is a difference between tough and impossible here, there is no challenge, no loot and scarce sight of fun. The treadmill of getting overrun -> run back for 5 minutes -> overrun cannot surely be the vision for WvW.

The choices are simple; move server or put up with it. I struggle to see how organisation can make a difference against massively outnumbered, over-buffed, 24 hour capable opponents. And lets get real here- all 3 servers are the losers because Dragonzur must be twiddling it’s thumbs most of the time. Moving servers just punishes those who are making a stand as is evident by the previous big guild moves.

It will be interesting to see what Anet does to even the balance. My only hope is that they do it soon before alienating players with the silence on the various issues.
