Masteries. The name should have trigged a bad memory but alas it didn’t
Any of you who played DaOC back in the day they had a PvE expansion pack called Trials of Atlantis. Guess what it had, master levels.
If I were to drop dead in say 80 years and Peter were to ask me at the pearly gates “So, you still mad at what they did to DaOC?”, I could only reply with “Yes”. I will never not be mad at this.
It’s been in need of a nerf since last year. perhaps now we’ll have far less rage at people accidentally killing an ambient creature.
Good on you, ANet
Absolute nonsense.
Diminishing returns already kept ToT bag farms in check. There is no need for the nerf and it is completely uncalled for.
These balms have functioned the way they have for ages and it has never caused a problem, either on the marketplace or anywhere else.
It’s not about gating the story. By ensuring you 100% have certain masteries it means ANet can give more fun and meaningful missions. They can rely on you have a particular skill-set, or in the early stages ensure you’re actually progressing.
Think of the first few missions as a tutorial, they’re teaching you what masteries you’ll probably need, after or in between those, go nuts.
How is the story more meaningful because I grinded hours to learn how to lean while gliding or to talk to some frogs? That’s nonsense.

This is an MMO, please take your time to accomplish something or you are probably better of in a differen genre.
From http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/b/615404797 and transcription stolen from Reddit:
“The mastery system is an account-based, PvE progression system. As you progress through the jungle, it is available to every character you have that is level 80 – you will complete content and overcome challenges in the jungle that reward you with mastery points. What are some examples? As you complete elements of the story, you will be rewarded with mastery points. As you reach hard to find and hard to reach locations, as you defeat incredible challenges and incredible group challenges, you will be rewarded with mastery points. As you complete exploring entire maps, you are rewarded with mastery points. As you complete challenging achievements, that send you on journeys across the jungle and beyond, you will be rewarded with mastery points. And you can spend these mastery points to purchase abilities that are available for every PvE character on your account – so you don’t have to go in and progress every one of your characters over and over again. You do it once, this is all part of our no-grind philosophy for Guild Wars 2.”
Didn’t know that a no-grind philosophy means Korean MMO levels of grinding for points to unlock 1/6th of your character’s specializations.
