I play a war tank. I know… “roll a guardian, war tanks suck, boo, blah blah blah”. But in PvP it’s been working for me. The only class that I consistently have trouble with are Mesmers. Other classes haven’t been all that tough. Occasionally there is a godly player, regardless of class, that still rips through me.

I can usually jump into a group of four and hold them off for a good 30 seconds when my Rampage is up. I don’t win when going against that many, but if my team is on the ball they can take over some flags unchallenged.

Sounds interesting, mind sharing your build?

This is roughly my war tank build for pvp. I’m still experimenting with weapons.

Warrior tank is definitely not a popular choice. Though I’ve had a lot of fun on mine in PvP and PvE. I need to make a Guardian to see why so many people discard war tanks at face value. I haven’t been interested in high level fractals, so perhaps the reasons are apparent there as the character loadouts seem to need to be specific for groups to succeed.

Here’s roughly what I run. http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/warrior/?8.0|7.1c.9c.e.1c.9c|3.1c.9c|1c.9c.1c.9c.1c.9c.1c.9c.1c.9c.1c.9c|1c.9c.1c.9c.1c.9c.1c.9c.1c.9c.cc.9c|a5.0.u59b.u57b.0|0.0|5y.6c.63.6i.6l|e

In dungeon explorables I’m usually the one that can pick people up if they go down due to high health and armor. Rampage is great to boost your health up past 45k for a limited time.
You can generally stick nearest to the biggest threat to keep it away from the party or stay in front of an ally to block ranged shots meant for them.
The longbow as a secondary has a good self combo by using the burst and then Arcing Arrow when adrenaline is high. Otherwise keep the adrenaline full to get benefits from the Healing Surge ability and the Berserker’s Power trait.

Some of the mines will NOT get changed when you use the tamper skill, but they are underwater and the lightning effects do not appear when underwater, so you can’t see if they changed.

And sometimes they are instantly reamed BEFORE the rearming message appears.

I got the achievement with a legit mine-use run. But that was only after I understood this bug here that Mithran states. It’s important. After you use a mine for the first time and it respawns, it will be bugged. If you want to disarm it, use the disarm tool twice on it. That’s right, disarm once, wait for recharge, disarm twice. In the time it takes the disarm tool to recharge you can see the green mine switch to red. Sometimes instantly, sometimes after a second or so. I was originally disarming a mine and running to it to lure Canach. The buggy insta-switch back was nailing me. When you disarm the mine for a second time it will stay green until Canach blows them all up.

Also, I didn’t find a use for any of the mines except the bomb one. They probably do something… but meh, bomb mines kill him.

I liked the Crab Toss game. I wish there was a mode that didn’t have the Karka’s in it, or perhaps just tuned to have less of them. Or it’d be cool if there were randomized dangers.

Oh, and this is the first time I’ve experienced a channeling move where I had to hold the button down to fully channel it (The run dash). That would have been nice to have been explained.

Awesome Jump-dodge!

This would be fun. All that would be needed is a sequence branch on the first 5 frames of the dodge rolls that recognize if the jump button was pressed and viola, you now have player friendly controls. Basically it makes the timing not as critical. So the first couple of frames of the dodgeroll could start and if a jump was detected it would tween to the dodge jump animation.

All that’s needed then is animations and time to test it to see if it breaks anything. If they wanted it to be useful, perhaps make it so traps aren’t activated if you go through it with a dodge jump.

May want to take both summon elemental abilities. Switch to earth before you summon them. This may buy you some time to finish off an unwanted add.

Oh, and if you are a glass cannon like I was originally, some vit and tough gear could definitely help your survivability through Orr.

Easier to use in jump puzzles

I’ve only played three races. Human, Norn, and Charr. In that order the jump puzzles have been easiest. I see a lot of asurians doing puzzles though. I always thought there was something to that. Charrs were the hardest by far.

Engineers have a distinct advantage when it comes to jump puzzles due to the rifle ability that allows them to jump to a target cursor that you place on the ground. I’ve skipped many sketchy parts of jump puzzles by simply rifle jumping to skip that section. Though that trick does not help much on timed puzzles like the Mad Kings Clock Tower.

Sounds fair to me.

Wow, so narrow minded. I don’t do much in the ways of healing other than banner of tactics which only mitigates some of the damage coming in, not sure where you got that idea that I was a healer.

My primary focus is to take hits and keep a mob or boss on me. Damage prevention to the team. Also the limited movement when I have a mob locked down helps when others are using ground target channel abilities. When someone goes down I can revive them while taking meaty hits and often times still holding aggro. I can block and reflect shots back at a boss with my shield and a trait. It sounds like you’re not aware that you can stand in front of another player and take a projectile that was meant for them.

Then there’s Rampage. The multiple abilities to knock down and the health gain is great to take big hits and stun lock creatures so the team can dismantle them. All in all, this has proven to be a good build. With the authority that you speak on the subject I’m sure you’ve tried this set up at least once so you would be knowledgeable on the subject. Given your response, perhaps you just weren’t good at it.

I get what you’re saying Shadowlancer.7102. I also like the casual pace of the PvE world prior to Orr. Though I do think that there’s room for places like Southsun Cove for those that are looking for non-stop fighting. While it isn’t the best in regards to fun for me, there are times I crave that pace.

I get that there are story elements that progress world lore there and I do wish that there was a better separation between the fighting and those elements. When it comes to the achievements I put on my mercenary hat and mindlessly fight like the rest of the people on Southsun. The amount of people flocking to the area’s have made this task much easier.

The way I see it, the first part of the Flame and Frost was for players like me. It was fun and for the most part solo-able. That this new event lands in another player type demographic and that Southsun is way off to the side and not in the middle of the main world is cool with me.

Hahaha! That actually made me chuckle. I have never been kicked from a party. In fact after many runs I’ve gotten guild invites. I’d be happy to get kicked though if the party consisted of members that shared this view. It’s a very Final Fantasy Online way of thinking. Where one piece of armor isn’t the specific desired type so the person was kicked. At least in FFO it was justified.

Here, there are plenty of ways to run dungeons successfully and if you plan on pugging it like I do, I recommend Vit and Tough. Being downed with glass armor can take longer to regroup than steadily pounding through enemies.

They probably didn’t boot you to shave a few seconds off the time of the dungeons. I mean that’s silly. Most likely they aren’t very good and need to be carried. If they’re afraid of being the reason for wipes, I can see how their fear would motivate them to try to find the best crutch players they can.

Scalable Dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Punk Rogue.9856

Punk Rogue.9856

The dungeons do scale, they scale by level and that’s enough. PUGs shouldn’t complain when you watch the story clips in a story mode dungeon. You just found some bad people there.

I can remember in another MMO a solo option was put into the equivalent of story dungeons and it effectively meant no groups ran those dungeons. Anyone who spent more than 10 minutes looking for group just gave up and it did solo, meaning the next person would see no groups forming and would do it solo, and so on. You could argue that the same thing wouldn’t happen in guild wars but actually it would.

You could be right on the first point. Though I’ve yet to find a party that doesn’t want to skip through all the story bits.

In the game you mentioned, more people ran dungeons rather than gathering a group? Hrm… sounds like more people wanted to run solo than to run with a group. This post seems inadvertently supports the idea of scalable dungeons.

I would think that if people really wanted to run a dungeon in the game you mentioned, they would gather guildmates or make friends. I actually love running dungeons with friends. Though I only have two that will actually do dungeons. We’ve done some with only the three of us, but it’s a bit skewed and more of a chore than fun.

Perhaps this is the heart of the fear of allowing scalable dungeons. There would be less pugs to use as tools to get through dungeons.

I’m sure any who just read that saw that I used the word “tool” to refer to other players. That’s what pugging seems to be. Personally I’d rather run with people that I want to run with, friends. Which is still possible and desired in the scalable dungeons concept. In times that my friends aren’t on though, I’d still like to run dungeons myself.

My warrior is a tank and he does the best at dungeons out of my other 8 characters. I draw aggro as well as you can expect in GW2, so the rest of the team really needs to protect themselves. But with very high vit and toughness I devote myself to evading to anyone that’s downed and reviving them. My abilities allow me to invince through some damage and my traits help me to revive faster. Rampage also raises my health to around 46k for as long as the ability lasts. It’s been working pretty well in dungeons, WvW, and PvP.

Scalable Dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Punk Rogue.9856

Punk Rogue.9856

Here’s the thing. There is a lot of story that dips into the dungeons. The whole group with Rytok and gang goes off into the dungeons. This is world lore sort of stuff. As a solo player I want to see that. There are interesting parts that I am missing out on. I’ve pugged, and its fun when I want to faceroll monsters. But I’ve yet to find a party that doesn’t cry and moan if I want to watch the story parts. I say take the story out of the group dungeons or make the dungeons scalable down to a single player. Or maybe even have a story recap that plays all the cutscenes. Something that is earned by defeating a dungeon and can be pulled up and watched later out of the dungeons after the party disbands.
I’d even be happy if the story parts of the dungeons could be scalable experiences while the explorable parts were left as is. Allow people like me who can appreciate the story to take as much time as I want with it while the steamroll teams can kill monsters in exploration mode to their hearts content.
I almost think that part of the arguments against this may be due to the gear that solo players would have access to. As if there’s a badge of honor in having a specific item or whatnot. I hope this isn’t the case because like I mentioned above, I’ve pugged these dungeons and there isn’t any that I would consider hard. The most difficulty I’ve seen is when you get grouped with players that can’t hold their own. So the gear isn’t really a badge of honor, its just more gear gained by getting a lucky party roll. Though if this really is a stopping point of the scalable dungeon concept, make the drop rate less when there are less people in a party. I could easily live with that.
There was one point made in a post from awhile back that I’d like to quote, though I think the author may not see it the way I do.

“Making every dungeon solo will make the game a singleplayer game (like it happened in GW1) and no one wants that, you can already solo Rox and Braham instances so there is your “solo” instance to do.” -Azzer

This point depicts that the majority of people in GW1 played solo in dungeons. If this is indeed the case, then it stands to reason that more people wanted to solo dungeons than to play with a group in them.

I say give the majority what they want.

Since when are repeated knockdowns fun?

in Flame and Frost

Posted by: Punk Rogue.9856

Punk Rogue.9856

I suggest that design takes a tip from fighting games and allow players to “tech” out. Basically it’s a mechanic that allows a character to roll out of a knockdown if the player dodges right when their animation has the character landing on it’s back. It would have to be a small skill based window so knockdowns wouldn’t be neutered. I’d even go as far as allowing a tech out to not cost dodge meter but instead give a burst of dodge meter recovery.

1 player instance appreciated

Punk Rogue.9856

I wholeheartedly agree. I prefer solo, it allows me to take time to enjoy an area without having to always run and gun with a group or having to wait… and wait, while trying to put a group together.

On a similar note, I ran the Adventure Box the first time with a group and it was highly annoying how my group just wanted to get to the end to feed their face with the reward. When I tried successfully to solo it I was ecstatic that I could.

The world will be a spectacular place if eventually dungeons could also scale to allow for a solo player.

My guild has one person. Me. I like me, I entertain me. Whenever I want to talk to someone new, there’s plenty of people in town and in the world to. Sure, it’s slower to build something like a guild vault, or as I call it my bonus backpack, but it suits me just fine.

Suppressed messages are ridiculous right now

in Suggestions

Posted by: Punk Rogue.9856

Punk Rogue.9856

I suggest to fix that.

If you say something a couple times you are locked out of chat for an equally ridiculous amount of time.

So if your dungeon group is looking for members over a decent period of time, it starts to become a round robin in your group of who’s going to get banned from chat next. Doing call outs in WvW, same thing. Say “Bluelake clear!” when your side asks for a status every now and then and you get suppressed. So when an attack threatens the tower you can no longer warn your side. Or if you’re holding down Ctrl to get names to appear and you get into a tight spot where you hammer on Shadow Refuge, which does not work when holding Ctrl but instead displays the power in chat, this can also get your messages suppressed.

Maybe it’s only for the exact same message? So “Bluelake clear 1”, “Bluelake clear 2” and so on may get around it. Haven’t tried that yet. Though if that’s the case the spammers will just as easily bypass this annoying system.

It seems like it has been added to stop spam. That’s cool but it’s way too strict right now. Ease up on the reigns.

Loving it!

I’m having a blast with the box. This retro feel with all the tidbits of old games really hit the spot. I don’t really care about the skins or rewards, I don’t think the event even needed them though they are cool to have. It’s just plain fun.

I’m generally a solo player. So when I attempted this solo and was able to go through it, it was awesome.

My only wish is that I wish we could zoom into a first person mode. It would help across the board on jumps where you are against a wall and are expected to jump across a chasm.

A discussion between zerg and non-zerg

in WvW

Posted by: Punk Rogue.9856

Punk Rogue.9856

Perhaps add scenario’s that wouldn’t attract zerg-minded players. An NPC engineering guild arrives at base camp. Components for a monster siege engine are needed. These are WvW components only and will disappear from inventory when the map is left so they cannot be hoarded or stacked. Metals, woods, and items that are harvested from the countryside. While a zerg could technically perform this task, it would be less attractive than taking keeps or or killing for bags.

My 02 cents.

Swearing loyalty to a Commander

in WvW

Posted by: Punk Rogue.9856

Punk Rogue.9856

Not all commanders are made the same. A good commander can make the difference in taking and holding a map. But sometimes a couple of commanders appear on the same map which can be distracting if they don’t see eye to eye.

I’d like to be able to swear loyalty to a commander and have it represented in-game. Perhaps even have a commanders icon switch to a new color or iconic representation dependent on how many followers he has.

A next-level step would be to have each commander icon clickable. When that occurs a window opens up where individuals can rate a commander on things like Taking Towers, Taking Camps, Taking Castles, Keeping Camps, Keeping …etc.

Something that would be fun would also to be able to click on a tower, camp, castle and see who was the last commander to take it, if there was one, and a numeric count of opposing forces. Perhaps have an icon that lingers for a bit after significant open world battles that were not a tower, camp, or castle to that tells how many participated and what were the results.

Just some ideas from a dude.

Let’s face it.
Engineers are just not finished.
What is your point of view?

I was surprised at this post. The whole way up to 80 I felt that Engineer was over powered and probably going to be nerfed at some point. I’ve been trying thief, guardian, and elementalist and so far I’ve been struggling to pull of the dps that came so naturally to my engineer. When I reached 80 I still had some level 24 gear that I figured I’d upgrade if I found something better or came up against something that gave me any trouble.

Overall I just thought the game was made to be easy. Until I tried those other characters. Being afraid of 2 enemies at the same time when my Engineer was taking on 5 at a time at this point was an eye opener.

I don’t want this to sound like a “How great am I” commentary, I think it was all in the Engineer class that gave me that power.

For any struggling Engineers, go with Inventions, turrets, flamethrower, and pistols and you should do fine. At 80 I switched up to grenades and explosives and holy cow it puts my pistol damage to shame.

I have to agree with the first person that posted this. A simple mechanic like jumping platforms is ruined when you cannot see your feet to time the jump due to other characters. Also the collision to some of the platforms needed a little more love to make it reasonable.

A small tip to any still stuck on this, turn off camera shakes and strip down. It helps micro comprehension a little bit.
