For a game that’s historically been so alt-friendly, this is basically outright hostility towards altaholics.

The biggest problem after all is that you can gain an undefined amount of HP for of wvw so you will have an advantage with the next elite specs if you wvw a lot.

That’s true, although 250 WvW levels (and that’s assuming a 1:1 ratio, which might not be the case), especially for people with many alts, is nothing to shake a stick at at all. Even with my 1900 ranks, (which is well above the above average amount of WvW play, I’d say) 1900 divided by 250 is only 7.6, meaning I wouldn’t even be able to get the Elite Spec for each unique class unlocked. If you made it a 2:1 or 5:1 ratio, the advantage of even the most veteran WvW players would be very small, and I’d say that putting that many hours into that gamemode, or any gamemode, means that they deserve it.

I think someone on Reddit did World Completion in 35 hours or something like that on a speedrun. You can probably do just the 214 Hero Challenges much faster. I don’t know how many ranks you’d get during 35 hours on a WvW K-Train, but I’d wager it’s not too far off from 214. So ANet should base their ratio on that and act accordingly.

My point is, WvW players should get something, anything really, for the hours they’ve put in thus far, just like people who completed Hero Challenges when they already had everything unlocked on their characters.

As for what you said about currencies, I don’t see why there’d need to be 2. You could even do it as items, as the blog post makes it sound. Simply mail the first character you log into after HoT launches a chest filled with X amount of Proofs the character has earned based on their WvW rank, then that character can buy as many Notarized Scrolls as they can (214 for Central Tyria + (5 * the number of new Hero Pts in Maguuma)), then you can put the excess Proofs, if any in your bank and do the same for all your other characters until you run out. Or maybe you don’t want the Elite spec for that first character, so you put them in your bank right away and distribute them however you like. Who knows? This would actually obviate the problem of Hero Points not being account-bound, though I actually don’t know if ANet can ship people multiple stacks of 250 items in one single chest in the mail. But I’m sure that wouldn’t be an awful problem to fix.

You’re correct that it’s not going to be a precise exchange, but surely they can devise some sort of a system that gives a somewhat fair ratio of points to people. Maybe it’s 10:1 Level-to-Proof. Someone like me with Rank 1900 would only get 190 Proofs, not even enough for one full character. Sure, there’s people who would probably get 300 Proofs, or maybe even 500, I don’t know what the highest WvW rank is, but surely we can live with these few outliers getting a bit of an advantage for the sake of everyone who has even just a little bit of WvW rank getting something out of their time there and not starting from scratch.

Getting nothing for past WXP while PvE players get full value for their past hero challenges, when Anet themselves have declared these to be equivalent, is categorically not a “compromise”, I’d encourage you to have higher standards for your expectations. Why would you possibly settle for something like this? Stick up for yourself. Don’t defend something that mathematically defrauds you of your valuable time.

Why do you feel entitled to unlock everything immediately but those who only PvE won’t be able to?

And I don’t think you can have 398 spare hero points. According to the wiki you get 398 from levelling and there are 214 available in tyria:

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hero_point

So you should only have ~214 spare. Reportedly we will require ~250 to unlock everything.

My bad, I do only have 214, I confused it with the 398 you get for leveling.

And I’m not saying I’m entitled to anything more than a PvE player. I have 9 alts, 10 characters total. Theoretically, I could have been earning those Hero Points for 3 years now. If I had 214 on all my characters, I am “entitled” to unlock however much 214 Hero Points gets me per character towards my Elite Specialization when HoT drops.

Now, ArenaNet, as developers, have put a system in place that says that leveling up in WvW (gaining 5000 WXP) gives you a certain amount of progression towards Hero Points, too. Maybe each 5000 WXP is one Hero Challenge. Maybe you only get one every 25,000 or 50,000 WXP (5 or 10 ranks). I don’t know. But ArenaNet has decided that there is some new equivalency here. But the WXP I’ve earned isn’t new. I’ve been earning WvW experience for 3 years, just as some people have been doing Hero Challenges as part of World Completion for 3 years.

So why should a person who’s done 214 Hero Challenges on every character be able to get 214/250 (85.6%) of their Elite Specialization line done on day one, when a person who’s leveled up 1900 times in WvW have 0/250 (0%) towards their Elite Spec on day one? There needs to be parity.

That’s all I’m saying, sorry if it wasn’t clear. I’m not asking for anything more than PvE players, I’m simply saying that PvE players have been able to put in work from August 2012 – October 2015 that will now count towards their Elite, WvW players should be afforded the same courtesy.

everyone starts with 0 elite hero point.

Where’s the source on this? I have 398 (EDIT: 214, actually) spare Hero Points on my Thief who has 100% world completion and 100% of all core skills and traits, I believe I can use those 214 to unlock my new Elite Specialization and the associated skins, no?

I’m a rank 1900+ in WvW, and I am sincerely hoping there is a system in place to reward people who have devoted hundreds upon hundreds of hours to this amazing game mode rather than making us farm up even more WvW ranks for Elite Specializations.

Yes, HoT is launching with the Elite Specs at the same time for all people, but if the equivalency that’s being drawn is that “WvW XP == Hero Challenge map completion”, then there should be some system in place to compensate people who already have earned enough WXP to qualify for a ton of Hero Challenge completions. After all, people who’ve already done Hero Challenges out in the world through actual Map Completion will have instant access to their Elite Specializations if they’ve done enough. So I’d sincerely hope that simply because WvW players are getting a new system that it doesn’t leave us out in the cold.

Apologies if this has been discussed somewhere else, I’m simply worried because the blog post doesn’t explicitly state how existing WvW Ranks will be handled in the new reward system, and there’s worrying language in the part about Liquid WXP that says that you don’t want WvW players instantly completing Hero Challenges in Maguuma, which seems to suggest that even the most veteran WvW players will need to start from 0 in this new system.

But again, if WXP is equivalent to Hero Challenge completion now, then WvW players need to have what we’ve already completed be acknowledged, just as players who’ve done all 189 skill challenges will still have their progress on October 23rd. Anything else is a massive slap in the face. The first character to log in should recieve the appropriate amount of Proofs for their WvW level (this could be difficult if the Proof is an item, not a currency), and that should be that. Please don’t undermine this new exchange system from the get-go.

Question about mouse macros

in Account & Technical Support

PurpScurpington.6457

I recently just got a new Corsair Sabre mouse (was handed it by Camd0zer in Boston, actually), and while the mouse has 8 buttons, the game seems to only recognize the traditional 3, then the 4 and 5 buttons on the side. The Corsair software allows you to rebind the functions of the mouse’s keys, and I would like to rebind my DPI Up/Down keys (Mouse 6 and Mouse 7, respectively) to Look Behind and About Face. (I will be rebinding my mouse’s DPI selector to Mouse 8 ).

Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, the game won’t let me bind any mouse buttons beyond Mouse 5 to actions. As a workaround, I am thinking about binding those two actions to unused keys on the keyboard (I’m currently not using J or U), then using the Corsair software to make M6 press J and M7 press U.

I believe this would fall under the 1-to-1 action rule, correct? Just wanting to make sure before I go getting myself banned.

This worked for me:

Find your hosts file here: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

Copy/paste the hosts file to your desktop.

Rename the file so it becomes “hosts.txt”

Now open the file with notepad. (you need to run as admin if you have that option)

Add this line at the bottom:

174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com

Save the file.

Now rename the file again to delete the .txt so it has no file extension anymore and is just “hosts” again.

Now go replace your old hosts file with this new edited one on your desktop.

If you have the GW2 launcher already open, restart it.

This was someone else’s fix, but it worked for me when the Google DNS didn’t work right away.

Can confirm this works. Download speed shot right up to 6+ mbps.

I’m having the same issue on FiOS as well, even with Google DNS the download still oscillates down to 0.00kb/s after a reboot of the network adapter and of the entire PC itself. Both patches on 5/20/2014 completed without incident, please provide a fix for this problem as soon as possible to prevent people from missing the new content.

Is it possible to allow manual patching or P2P patching to get around this?

Spinal Blades Color Question

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

PurpScurpington.6457

Is it possible to change the color of your [Dynamic/Synergetic/Static] Tempered Spinal Blades after already having colored it in the Forge?

I got a red one with 10 Static cores, but now I want Green (Synergetic I think), but I don’t want to make another whole Spinal Blades.

Can I put my Static Tempered Spinal Blades back into the Forge with 10 Crystalline Dust, 4 Elonian Wine, and 10 Synergetic Cores and get a Synergetic Tempered Spinal Blades, even though my Blades are already Static and colored red?

Basically:

Does the Mystic Forge recipe for each of the colored Spinal Blades accept the other colors of Spinal Blades in their recipes? Or just the uncolored one?

What to do with 4250 Blade Shards?

A game that curtails the economy to encourage player participation in living story events cannot be said to have (a) an actual economy or (b) developers confident in their ability to create relevant content people want to play. Perhaps restrict the achievement items, but account-binding a crafting material that can easily accumulate in stacks of 250, like any of the Ascended Mats or Blade Shards, is ridiculous.

I bet DR wishes they had Anvil Rock and their Oceanic transfers to hold GoM back like they did last week…

Address your concerns to the Ministry of Possibly Fictitious Claims of Collusion. An MPFCC case worker will be assigned to investigate should the matter warrant it.

Not saying that it was intentional, but it did happen. GoM spent so much time trying to fight AR’s new teams that they didn’t have time to respond to the secondary threat.

We need to talk about dungeon access

in Suggestions

Posted by: PurpScurpington.6457

PurpScurpington.6457

I like to run p1 and p2 of CoF every day. It’s a fun dungeon and it’s easy gold and dungeon tokens. However, before I’m able to do a run of CoF with my party, the five players the LFG tool has assembled usually wind up sitting in party for 20 minutes, refreshing gw2state.com just waiting for a single server to have the event open. And even if one server does, sometimes no one in the party can guest, or those who can haven’t run CoF on story mode.

But the point is, I shouldn’t even have to go to a whole other server just to have easy access to a dungeon.

This is an example of ANet creating difficulty/content/value by denying access to other content/value. If this is their way of compensating for how easy p1 & p2 are, it’s a cop-out. Either make the dungeon harder to run, or make the rewards better so people will actually pay attention.

It’s the same as the Temple of Balthazar – inexplicably, the only merchant in all of Tyria who sells Obsidian Shards by themselves for karma is locked away by an event that no one is interested enough to run, thus allowing the laziness of the majority to deny the minority access to something unparalleled in usefulness.

The whole point of a dungeon is that it is instanced, separate from the rest of the world, unlike world events. So why is it that endgame dungeons (CoF, CoE and Arah) are hidden behind a boring meta-event with crap rewards in zones that are boring for meta-events in general? Who’s ever heard of a meta-train in Fireheart Rise? What level 80 goes to Mt. Maelstrom for anything but world completion or the Inquest Golem? Orr isn’t a particularly interesting place to run a meta train anymore either, hence the migration to Frostgorge, a place where the dungeon is open 24/7.

Especially in light of the introduction of the LFG tool, there is really no excuse for stranding players in up to 5 separate worlds, none of which are likely to have endgame dungeon content open. The three dungeons affected by this policy are open on a whopping 10% of worlds at any given time. CoF seems to be far less than that of late. This policy punishes people who choose a server that doesn’t constantly tend to their meta-trains. But obviously since even PvE-heavy servers don’t have them open most of the time, this is symptomatic of a bigger problem. When no servers are enthused about doing your content, it’s time to fix that content.

The people who religiously run meta-trains like Frostgorge are different from the people who really care about running dungeons daily. Linking the two things together because they’re both PvE content is silly, and should be dispensed with.
