Been using this build for quite awhile now. Basically its a bleed build, with good survivability. I keep sharpening stone on autoattack, and it is not uncommon for me to keep 19 – 25 stacks of bleed on an enemy. With Runes of Agony going, those bleeds last for a while, even after they cleanse conditions, I stack them back up quickly, which causes quite a few people to run, and or just accept death.

Elementalist, with tons of condition, removal are probably my biggest weakness. not that they kill me, but they do keep me busy enough until more enemies arrive. My nest weakness I have noticed is Engineers running high condition builds with turrets. Only when fighting on points though, in the open, I just run from turrets and kill them elsewhere.

Give it a try, let me know if it works.

Candidate Trials tier 4 solo perfect score

So Bronze is considered a perfect score?

Many people seem to forget or just plain overlook the fact there is in fact two parts to this instance.

1. Stop them from stealing your goal. (which you so proved can be done solo on tier 4)

and ……

2. Kill 50 enemies to get the gold award. (which you seem to forget to do on your “perfect run”)

So .. yay for finishing tier 4, but you can pull perfect from the title of the thread.

Its not so much how you were raised, its society as a whole, and just the ways things are these days. If it were how we were raised, your kids would be more like you. But I do agree with you on that part of people wanting things faster these days. But its still not the point.

We devour content like its nothing, because with as fast as things happen nowadays, we do not want to miss out on whats next.

If I was only playing this game for a legendary and nothing else, I would have it already. But I enjoy the content of the stuff they are adding and whatnot. So that prolongs the legendary and I accept that.

The problem lies with the people that came before us. What I mean is the people who power farmed, exploited, or botted their way to get things faster has ruined it for the people who play legit. Anet had to slow them down, which in turn slowed us down.

I have already admitted I know why they are doing it, and I dont blame them, but with all the stealth nerfs intended or unintended, it has created mistrust, and that will kill a community.

1) You shouldn’t be farming to begin with.
2) Nothing was changed, your perception is just different.
3) Nobody cares.
4) If you aren’t having “fun” anymore, then quit.

I’ve come into this thread just to say I hate you and people like you.

The fact that there are things in this game that cost 500+ gold to make (volcanus comes to mind), not to mention stuff like infinite light, mjilnor (spelling is wrong, I know) and then legendaries means that farming is needed. Flat out. End of. You are wrong. This isn’t a debate. To get a high tier item one would like in a reasonable amount of time, farming is needed. Whether it be world bosses, mobs in Orr, dungeons of any kind, gathering every day, whatever. Farming is needed.

Also, perception is how we get results for the scientific method. To claim that his “perception changed” doesn’t mean he’s wrong, you blithering kitten.

The problem I have with your diatribe is the terms reasonable amount of time. Reasonable amount of time to whom?

In most games, if you don’t have certain gear, you can’t progress at all. You need X gear in order to enter Y raid. This game doesn’t do that to you, so the amount of time it takes to get the highest end gear is longer…intentionally so.

It’s not supposed to be fast to get the best looking (matter of opinion anyway) weapons in the game. They’re not giving you more power.

The problem is, you kids today have no patience. lol

Why do you keep going to the age argument? We get it man …. You are retired, and stuck at home, and play up to 10 hours or more a day since launch, as per your statement of having played 3000+ hours already. You playing this game is basically a full time job.

If I had 3000 hours in this game, I am sure I would have my legendary too, and I would be on here telling people to relax and take their time and high fiving you on your post, but I dont.

So when I come on, I farm.
1. Because I enjoy it after a long day at work to come home and do mindless nothings for a while.
2. Because I have a goal I would like to achieve in a reasonable amount of time, so that if something new does come out .. and it will, I will be able to spend my time working toward that goal as well.

Its really that simple. But I am sure you will have something to say along the lines of .. This game is not for me … or Gear progression does not exist, so with Exotics I will hit just as hard… When it has nothing to do with being powerful … I just want to kill people in WvW with a bow that shoots unicorns because its hilarious to me. Simple …

Sure we will find another way to get said goal, but the fact we have to work so hard to get that goal, is the reason why people quit after they get what they want. The sigh of relief when you press that button on the forge to make your legendary is also a dying last breath in my opinion, for people who do not enjoy the game to begin with.

If these people want to quit after getting their legendary, its easy to see they did not like the game in the first place, and were playing for the shiny stuff and not the content.

Seriously now?
There are people who farm (don’t know maybe 6-12h a day) to get the final price and then quit? Nobody told them, that they could could quit before doing that and maybe live a life or having fun or … or… or… idk everything sounds more interesting than that!
I am so not having any sympathy for such fools…

Most people enter a game with a certain goal in mind. They do the research on the part of the game that makes them happy, and that becomes their goal when launch hits. When goal is achieved, and the rest of the game does not interest them, they leave, and maybe come back later when something new in brought in, rinse repeat.

I have no sympathy for them either. What I am saying is that sometimes people get bored with the game, yet get fixed on a certain goal in the game that they would like to achieve. Once said goal is achieved, they have a time period they play even harder trying to like the game, and showing off their new weapon/armor/prize .. once the newness of all that goes away, and the compliments of ’ Hey man, awesome sword!" go silent, they end up quitting.

It is what it is. This game just so happens to have a huge grind and requires farming to reach the one goal that most people want to achieve, and that is to look cool and powerful with their new/rare weapon.

And luckily there are players who have different goals who are present in this forum to tell you how to play the game their way, so you too can achieve maximum happiness like them.

Anyway .. not sure why I even replied to this, but I did … so there ya have it.

Actually I am one who does like the game for what it is. I did not come in here to “bash” the game. I came in here to tell one individual that it was not fair for him to tell people to play the game the way he does, as he flashes his legendary in their face.

Except he’s not, the devs are. It just happens that he (and myself) already play the game the way the devs intended it to be played, and it turns out that when you do that you tend to be a lot happier with the game than when you expect it to work like every other MMO ever.

There is never a wrong way to play a game that is supposed to be a living world. Yes there are simple moral rules you must follow, but the game is open to play like you want, or at least it was suppose to be. If I choose to mine copper from level 1 – 80, that is my right to do so, but with the way things happen with this game, mining copper would get nerfed so as not to be helpful in my quest to be the Copper King.

I am happy you happen to fit the mold the devs want. You are apparently one of the chosen ones when it comes to this game, as you have nailed it. (applause)

I will state this once again so you might understand it this time. Please read this part carefully, as I truly mean every word of it. I …… LIKE ….. THIS …… GAME!!!!!!!

I do not expect it to be like every other MMO, and is the reason I am here. And I am here trying to make sure it does not turn into every other MMO. Because sooner or later they will introduce more legendary skins, and maybe legendary armors, and the grind will be back on again. And if things are not learned now, on how players play this game in all ways and forms, we will run into the same thing again, and that is something I know we all want to avoid.

The problem with this whole post is no one that I know of is trying to change the game in any way. No one is making it about loot, max level, raids, or anything of the sort. We just want a goal that we can work towards with reliable progress.

Then you haven’t been reading the complaints that I have been. This goes all the way back to the beginning of the game, there’s no endgame, there’s no sense of progression, there’s no raids, no gear treadmill, etc.

Dozens of individuals have flooded the forums with demands that the game become something it’s not because that’s what THEY want to play. And when I say, go play that game, they complain because they only criticize the game to make it better. Which is to say, to make it the game they want to play and not the game it is.

I accept the game for what it is. I find the attitudes of these people to be dishonest, to put it as politely as possible. They pretend they love the game when all they do is bash the game because it isn’t (MMO the poster likes).

Anyway, there’s a red post in one of the threads about Legendaries. The gist of the message is, Anet is working on the kind of content that you want to play. It’s not something they can just toss into the game in a few weeks, they have already started laying the groundwork for this but it is a long term process. So you will eventually get the goal-oriented path to a precursor that you want. But making threads about it every day isn’t going to speed up the process at all.

Actually I am one who does like the game for what it is. I did not come in here to “bash” the game. I came in here to tell one individual that it was not fair for him to tell people to play the game the way he does, as he flashes his legendary in their face. Yes Vayne that is you. Someone who averages 10 hours a day in a game is grinding/farming in their own way whether he likes it or not. Im just saying in my shorter time of playing, I still manage to play the content provided, and farm the materials off to the side to obtain my goal, and it keeps getting nerfed for Anets purposes of making these people have to play longer so they have a shot at spending real life money on gems.

So the goal path I was on was going to take a long time as it was just because I do not play as much, but now its going to take longer, and the people who have their legendary come in here to tell me to “just play the game like they did” .. well Anet has made sure that I cannot as they have changed the game 100’s of times to make sure I dont. And I dont blame them for that, as I know what they are trying to achieve, but it does not take away the frustration of them taking away my toys every time I find a new one.

I know what they are doing, and why they are doing it. And I could not agree more on just about everything you said, but the point is, is that it is just as damaging to the game to have fast paths to a goal intended or unintended, and shut them down when people use said paths.

Sure we will find another way to get said goal, but the fact we have to work so hard to get that goal, is the reason why people quit after they get what they want. You of all people should be defending this line of thinking, as it will get rid of the people you so fight here on this forum today. Why do you want people playing your game that are just there for the grind and not the content?

Vayne, I understand where you are coming from, but your circumstances are much different than most everyone else who plays the game. Its not an age thing, as I will be 39 tomorrow, its a goal thing.

I was like you, still am in in most ways. I just wanted to play the game how I wanted. I ran dungeons, fractals, helped out low level people, donated money to different guildies for for their legendary weapons, or help fund whatever ideas they had for starting a new build. I had a period in time where I did not see PvE for a while cause all I did was PvP. Im not high level, but I am almost lvl 40 in the mists. I have been in WvW quite a bit, just because I like the thrill of battle.

And in WvW is where it happened. I was killed by someone in SoR with a dreamer bow, and at that point, I just had to have one. So I made it my goal in this game to get one, so I too could enjoy my time doing the things I like, with the bow I want.

If this game did not have legendary weapons, and ended with exotics, I would still be having a blast in this game doing all the things mentioned above. I would have no goal but to just play, which is why I came to this game. I never played WoW, but I did play Aion for over a year, and lineage 2 for 2 years, and I know what a grind/farming is, and this game delivers to me what they could not.

But all of this does not take away the fact that I have a goal in my head to get the bow that I want. Had the precursor dropped for me months ago, I would already have it as well. But it has not dropped for me, and it has made my goal of obtaining it a frustrating one, because every time I find a path to obtain it, it is shut down, or slowed down. And I am not talking about speed dungeon runs, as I am not a big fan of those. I do not believe in blowing by the content of a game to achieve a goal. And if I have time to play the content Anet has provided and farm in all one sitting, then I should be allowed to do so, and not punished for the latter. But we are, and that is why we are upset.

TLDR: Im old, I have done quite a bit of this games content, and I have a new found goal of getting my legendary, and while I play Anets content they have provided, I also like to play my own way, which is getting nerfed, and I do not like it.

whoever says that most part of getting a legendary is playing the game normally except for lodestone, i want to know how normally playing you can get 750 pile of crystalline dust to craft bifrost…
because in my normal gameplay i managed to have 100ish and this when loot and farming weren’t nerfed…
after the nerf i had to buy all of it and/or had it from friends

But you’ve made gold and you can buy mats. That’s what most people do. Most people don’t farm all the mats they need themselves. They play the game however they want, slowly building up the money they need to buy the mats they want. They keep an eye on the prices of mats, because they do fluctuate, and they try to buy when the price is lower.

So some people love dungeons and run them for money. Or Fractals. Some people hate them and just run dynamic events, which takes longer, but they do it anyway. Some people follow the world events around and make money doing that.

I do a bit of everything and though I didn’t need 750 crystalline dust for my lengendary, I did need 100 onyx lodestones, which by today’s prices works out to roughly the same price. And Crystalline dust has gone up. It’ll go down again after the Southsun event when more people are farming in Orr.

The point is, you don’t have to farm the mats, you just play the game, save your gold, and buy your mats. That’s what I did.

I am trying to make sense of all of your posts in this thread, but I am soooo confused.

You are telling people to slow down and play for fun, and that legendary weapons were meant to be “Ultra long term goals”, yet you have 3000 hours played by your admission, and a legendary already.

Its pretty easy to tell other people to relax and just play the game, when you are already afforded that luxury due to you achieving your "Ultra long term goal’ already. While others who either do not have your luck, your time, or your playing prowess want to achieve the same thing you have done already.

You are like the guy who quits smoking, then preaches to other people they should quit, and its easy. No one wants to hear it to be honest.

If half of these people had their legendary already, you would not see them in here complaining, unless of course it was about the lack of endgame/content.

I am happy you achieved your goal, and you did it YOUR way, but that does not give you the right to come in here and tell people THEIR way is wrong just because it is different than yours.

I am one of the players who enjoys mindless grinds ( Job is mentally tasking, and coming home to a mindless activity is nice) , and getting rewarded for spending my time doing what I find fun. I enjoy talking to my friends while grinding, and maybe listening to music while doing so, point is … to me, while I do enjoy the content Anet has put in the game, and I have tried most of it, farming is my bread and butter, and the content I find the most rewarding.

The good thing is that whenever Anet shuts down a farming spot, another one opens, so I will not freak out about losing skelks. I moved on from skelks a while ago, and making my money elsewhere, but as I see people moving in on that as well now, I know I need to start looking for another spot again. So I will .. and I will continue to play the game the way I want, as you so did it your way.

I use rune of the grove as well. That with entangle works well for me. They escape one root, to get caught in another, and I hit QZ and stealth on jaguar, and watch them panic as their health drains.

This is of course running solo or with a couple guildies. In zergs I feel kinda useless, as its hard to do single target damage when people just run up, do damage, then run to the back line again.

How to survive as a ranger

in Ranger

Posted by: Recluse.6740

Recluse.6740

I have a hard time getting rid of my axe off hand. I do not use it for stacking invulnerability, unless they want to stand there, but to either save myself at low health, or to kill someone ranging me with low health.

I was fighting a ranger and thief the other day. I play the beastmaster build, 0/0/30/10/30 with apothecary armor, and runes of the grove by the way. I put my jag on the ranger, and concentrated on the thief myself. After a couple minutes of taking them down slowly, I had them both down to about 5 to 10% health. Bad thing was my health was getting low as well with about 5 seconds cooldown left on troll ungent. I did everything I could just to survive those 5 seconds, popped troll ungent, switched to sword/ axe as the thief was now using short bow as was the ranger, and hit whirling defense. Basically I was in full heal mode and untouchable while they used ranged weapons on me. The ranger died to his own arrows, and thief went invis to heal and try and res the ranger. Quick stomped ranger and then finished thief off.

Now I will admit there are better weapons like dagger or torch for damage, but I use axe for survival.

For condition removal, the bear is tricky co when u select a mob anf then pres f2 the bear goes torward target and then uses it, i dont use the trait , im 30/25/10/0/5
Anda, in pvp heal as one is a stronger heal cos u wont be standing in the circle for most parts, thats why i say, no reliable condition renoval. Also the signer requires the pet to be alive

I agree with your build you do not have reliable condition removal. I am 0/0/30/10/30, and I also do not use healing spring in PvP, but use Troll ungent instead. My pet hardly ever dies in PvP or PvE.

The short comings of my ranger is that I do not do much damage with my weapons, but enough to not be taken lightly, and my pet does most of my damage. And with my runes, and jewels, my healing power is through the roof, not to mention my toughness, I am hard to take down, minus a few mesmer and thief burst builds, and even then I can hold my own against some of them.

Reliable condition removal….

?

We have a few ways to remove conditions, and they all work pretty well.
Plus one of THE BEST condition removal traits in the game. ( If you trait for it that is)

So you have a Bear that will remove a condition, and signet that will remove a condition every 10 seconds, or you can activate it and the pet will pull all conditions to them, including allies all at once, And then you Empathic Bond, also know as my best friend in PvP, that removes every single last condition you have on you no matter how many you have … every 10 seconds. Does not get much better than that if you ask me.

Oh .. and you have healing spring which also removes conditions.

Agadar, are you really telling him it does not get better?

Atheismo, Just so you know, when I started my ranger in beta, I felt just like you. I could not for the life of me figure this class out. But just as with any class in this game, once you learn the mechanics of it all, and the little tricks of the trade .. Ranger becomes one of the easiest classes to play PvE wise.

My pets can tank just about most mobs out there minus Champions, and the such. They tank the karka and that machine gun butt spray they dish out no problem. Basically, you just have to figure out how you want your ranger to work for you, and trait accordingly to get desired results.

If you do not want your pet to take aggro when you lay traps down, you can put him on guard, lay traps, shoot baddie, and watch them burn, and while they burn .. sick pet on them. WIN!

You really just have to play around with it. Anyone that says it does get better, probably has a few problems in some areas (this is not an insult). They might not know how to trait to properly to get better results, or their traits just plain do not work with the build they are trying to make. They could have slower hand/eye coordination which causes them more deaths.

Like Rhaps said “Sure Rangers have some things that need some fixing”, but if you look on the forums enough, you will find plenty of rangers who love it. And that is usually because they took the time to figure it out. Which if you like the basis of the Ranger, I suggest you do, or you will be missing out on a great class.

If you need help with builds, or whatever do not hesitate to ask, as you will have plenty of people that will be willing to help including myself.

Take care, and good luck on your ranger if you decide to stay with it.

Healing spring is a great heal, no doubt. You get the burst heal at the start, and regen after. I have two problems with it. I do not want to be stuck in a small circle to stack the regen, and regen is not strong enough to mitigate burst builds.

With Trolls Ungent and the traits I have, I get about 1500 HP per tick. You add that to having protection boon up almost all the time during a fight, and its pretty darn awesome.

Earlier I ran a Dwayna Rune Build with Healing Spring, and the 33% regen duration trait, and it was great as long as I was not fighting a heavy damage class.

I fought a ranger and it was a long….. long fight, which I finally lost after getting knocked down and bursted with quickness pet swap and canine knockdowns. So many times I would heal just in time to save my butt, but I was always on the edge … never knowing if the next burst was going to be it.

I logged back on to my other build .. joined same server, fought the same ranger 1 v 1, and was never in trouble one time. Got me to about 50% HP one time, but that was more on me, cause my heal was available, I just did not use it, cause the protection was keeping the damage down.

Of course this all could be because I am just used to it, but for some reason .. Trolls and Protection seem almost unfair at times.

I run a 0/0/30/10/30 build. I use Runes of the Grove, and Clerics Amulet in sPvP.
My utilities are Troll Ungent, QZ, SotH, SotW, and Entangle.

Wilderness Survival – Vigorous Renewal, Oakheart Salve, Empathic Bond

Nature’s Magic – Nature’s Protection

Beastmastery – Speed training, Rending Attacks, Natural healing

This build is exceptional at 1 v 1 fights, and does very well in 1 v 2 fights, if you are on your game.

Basically with this build, I am the pet. I am the distraction while my pets do all the damage. I pop TU when I enter a fight which keeps me close to full health with softer hitting classes which demoralizes them, and it keeps me alive if I get hit with burst, and lets me escape to fight on.

Runes of the grove, while not totally reliable do help a ton. If it hits, they get rooted, and my pet does very nice damage while they hit their stun break, or fight their way out, and once they get out, I hit entangle to trap them again, and put Jaguar in stealth, popping QZ and watching their health drop while I stack bleeds, and hit for around 200 -400 damage with my short bow. The best part of these runes are the protection duration increase. The runes give you a chance to get protection on hit, and you have protection on dodge .. so damage mitigation is wonderful.

My other weapon set is Sword/Axe … I know not the most used, but I absolutely love it. Against ranged players, its amazing. I pop Trolls Ungent, go into whirling defense, and heal while they make the decision to attack and hurt themselves, stop attacking and watch as I go to full HP, or come in and attack with melee, which is even nicer because then I am stacking vulnerability while my pet does not have to chase them around, and racks up even more damage. Quick disclaimer: While in Whirling defense if you are not healing, you can die quickly to a hard hitting melee, as you cannot move… so use wisely.

I still get beat by some players, mostly do to their skill being higher than mine, not because of weakness in the build. Im just not that great of a player, but I am decent.

I have run into at least 1 of every class that can beat me, but they are few and far between.

If anyone has any questions you can reach me in game (usually after 9pm central) on either Recluse, or Needle Slinger. Recluse is my sPvP build tester, and PvE main, and Needle Slinger is my main in sPvP.

Take care, and hope I helped some Rangers out.

Yes … constantly. My Ranger Needle Slinger is always getting messages like that. I just lol most of the time. When they start saying they are going to report me .. I say go ahead.

I always thought it was the younger crowed talking all the smack, but sadly, the older people get worse sometimes lol. Im guessing they are just that competitive.

I would not worry about the report threats.

I am confused as I know my pet can out heal one persons damage, but not two at the same time. Something just seems weird to me. Not saying it did not happen, but ya … seems weird.

Ok, I apologize. Apparently I was just enough to the side of the Golem to get crossfire to engage. I thought you had to be further to his side to get it to stack bleeds, but apparently not. Sorry again.

Just retested. It does not do it 100% of the time. But when it does get one bleed on, it keeps stacking them till bonfire runs out.

Weapons: Axe/Torch —- Shortbow

Testing on golems tonight I was trying to see how much burning duration I could get on a target with bonfire and then shooting shortbow for combo field.

So I would lay down bonfire, switch to bow and auto-attack while standing in the field to test. During the duration of bonfire, I might get one burn on the target. So my warrior friend shot through the field standing out of it, and stacked a good amount of burn on the target.

So our conclusion at first was that I needed to lay bonfire down, dodge back, then shoot from outside the field to get my burns on. Well … I was surprised when all I did was stack bleeds through the field.

Shooting head on, so crossfire was not the issue. Not traited to bleed on crit so count that out. Pet was on passive, so nothing from there. It just stacked bleeds instead of burns. And it was a constant stack .. I kept 6 stacks just on auto-fire till bonfire ran out.

Also, is it suppose to only work from outside the field, and not in it?

If this is already known forgive me. I did a quick search for it, but found nothing. And if it is not known. Can someone please test it out to see if i am correct.

Thank you.

Has anyone tried the new PvP map with their ranger? I jumped on a server earlier tonight, and it was me and 2 other people, so I just went exploring. Jumping up and down to different levels, I was kinda having fun. Then I noticed my pet was not with me. Thank goodness I was not fighting anyone as “half” my damage was lagging behind trying to find a path down to me that involved using every ramp on the map lol.
