Since I’m not a great GW2 PvP player, I thought I’d just read on what people thought about the new masteries on the forums here.

It really seems that NO ONE is happy.

To the programmer who was bug fixing Ranger

I was there when the dev. officially responded to this. He said the names were stored server side and it would take almost an entire server on its own to store every single characters’ pets’ names. They didn’t comment any further on it after that.

Wow, that’s a load of bull. I’m sorry, but storing millions of names doesn’t take a full server. Yes, it takes up some storage. This is from a quick search:
http://www.wisegeek.org/how-much-text-is-in-a-kilobyte-or-megabyte.htm

One gig is 500,000 pages of text.

I’d love to actually read that quote from a developer just to be able to soundly refute such nonsense. Names of the pets vanishing is an oversight by the developers. It is FAR from an impossible fix. Yes, it takes data. Lets say that they expand GW2 to allow for 100 pets per person. Lets say that they plan for 10 million players. That would eat up around 25-30 gigs in a database depending on the overhead of the database. The actual name data (with 20 characters) should be 20gigs.

If you expand and allow for a full character set though, that could be doubled. But lets go crazy. Lets say that 100gigs on the server for potential pet names.

However the best suggestion I’ve seen is store the pet names on the player’s computer. Do a check for formatting each time they are uploaded to the game again (to ensure compliance) and let the players store all that. And even let them change the pet names offline. Yes, when a pet is swapped, the name will have to be approved each time, but that could be spun off on a low priority process and the name could just take a little while to update. Since you can’t change pets in combat anyway, it isn’t a huge thing if it takes a couple seconds for the new name to register when choosing a new pet.

Heh, trait #2:
Become a warrior for 10 minutes, long enough to fool your group into taking you on a run before they realize you’re really a ranger.

I wish the GS was a bit more viable. I love the animations and just enjoy the fights with it.
Actually, I like the sword too, but that freeze in the main attack rotation I don’t like. I know I’m not a “pro” player for dealing with it, but I just don’t like it either. It’s like the ranger is crazy mobile, except for this tiny window in which I’m stuck.

Ugh. During the beta I mostly played an elementalist and felt for sure that would be my profession in launch. But a few weeks into the game I tried a Ranger one evening and I found myself liking the Greatsword. Partly it is due to the Asura with it. I think it is kitten fun to see an Asura fly across and smash the kitten out of a target.

Alas, I have a hard time logging into GW2 as I find so many groups would kick me for dungeon runs. I arrive with sword and no bear and yet – kick. Finally I just gave up on group content and just roam open world now.

But I sure would like to be considered viable by the masses. I don’t need to be OP and I don’t even mind being a slight underdog. I hope the patch comes in soon and at least makes it so that I can enjoy the instanced/group content too.

And I do try to level up other professions. Meh… I just like my ranger.

No, literally if I do a traceroute from my computer it dies immediately outside my home router.

It’s being blocked somewhere. Nothing is set in my router itself to block (and it does jump to the next connection point). Just Comcast isn’t providing any other route. It just halts on right on the next step out on my router.

Totally weird.
Ok, guess it is time to start the traceroute process and see where it breaks down.

I often see links to http://gw2skills.net out there, yet I haven’t been able to access the site.

I saw some other posts that led me to believe the site went down over a year ago, however just today I’ve seen new builds posted using http://gw2skills.net as their link.

Can someone give me a clue? Is this site blocked by some ISPs or something?

Lately I’ve been running with an ice and fire drake, so I named them Heat Miser and Snow Miser.

Sometimes when roaming the world, I might actually pull out a bear just to taunt and soak. Less now, but when I do I like to call it Destroyer of Picnic.

PvE Great Sword Build?

in Ranger

I like the Greatsword. Probably my favorite Ranger weapon. In fact, it inspires me to trait into Wilderness Survival so that I can get the faster recharge on the GS skills.

But I’m not sure if that is really the best build. I’ve hit the level cap and I’d like to start running more dungeons and fractals. It seems fractals are the “end game” instances, so I need to get myself set up for them.

Is there a solid build around GS as a main that will let me hold my own in a fractal group?

When I read so much hate to rangers in groups, I tried rolling a warrior, but I really like the feel of the Ranger. So I’d like to make a good name for Rangers in Fractal instances. I’m not a LB/Bear player at all. Currently, I use a lot of traps. Since I’m jumping in with GS and sometimes using something like SB get out when needed, I’ll drop a couple traps to get some good conditions going. Seems to work really well in open world PvE.

Anyway. Thanks for the help.

Ranger - ReRoll?

Hello all.

I play GW2 on and off and keep meaning to really give it the full commitment. My main is a max level ranger. So one of the things that has caused me to slow down a play less is that it seems that other players are a bit less than excited to have a ranger in their groups.

For instance, finding a Fractal group was difficult at best. I’d get a lot of replies, “sorry, we are hoping for a warrior/guardian/or whatever”. Even more often, I’d get a “hold on, let me check” then after a few min, “sorry, we are full”. I started thinking the internal question was “Do we want a ranger along?” with the reply, “Let’s wait a min to see if anyone else responds”.

Reading in the Ranger forum, there is a lot of QQing. Most forums are filled with QQing anyway – yet the ranger seems to have the most disgruntled players. Very odd with the GW2 released stats showing Rangers as the second most popular class – however I am thinking that is just how many were created, not actually played on an on going basis…

Anyway. Before I get back into GW2 and start the grind for legendary gear, I’m curious if it would just be better to leave the ranger behind and work on another profession. I don’t want to spend hours getting all tricked out only to have a class that’s not really wanted around by others. If it is the case, one day Rangers might be buffed – but MMOs can take years to address classes that have broken mechanics.

I like GW2, but I find it a lonely game. I’ve tried a couple random guilds advertising in Lion’s Arch, however it usually ends up that only a few people will be on line at most with the majority doing their own thing.

I’m seeking a guild that likes teamwork. Grouping up to do, really whatever. I just prefer the desire to actually group over solo play. As a long-time MMO fan, I have to say I don’t love the modern direction of “play alone with a thousand other people”

Teamwork & fun. Dungeons, exploration, WvW, even RP is all good for me.

ME: I’m a mature player who has been playing MMOs since a bit more Ultima Online. I’ve run huge guilds, done the hard-core raiding scene, and used to have fun in the earlier MMOs days with heavy RP. Today I am more busy with work and family, so my hours online are shorter. So I like to have fun, but love to excel at my game.

In GW2 I ran a Ranger up to max level and then got a bit bored. Mostly due to the lack of strong community compared to my other MMOs. I am thinking about leveling another profession up upon this return to start fresh (although the fact rangers are having a bit of a tough spell might be a factor too).

Thanks!

Why are a lot of gamers unsociable?

I think there has been little evolution in the development of MMO social interfaces.

We are still using the same social interfaces from the early days of MMOs. The chat window, maybe some chat text over our heads. We’ve had some extra LFG interfaces here or there, but those don’t seem to help socializing much.

I don’t have the clear answer, however I feel there could be more systems to make connecting easier.

Josh, I don’t know if you’ll see my comment in this sea of replies, but….

I didn’t finish the puzzle. As I mostly play my Azura, I just could see my avatar at all in the mass of other people. If everyone else could have been made 20% transparent so I could see a ghost of them, that would have been perfect.

I really liked the puzzle and wish that I would have had the patience to just jump blindly more often. The fact that it was hard wasn’t an issue at ALL. Please don’t dumb down GW2 like other games do. Take WoW. I can watch a movie and play WoW and not die. It has become so easy it it has a hard time even being considered a “game” in my eyes.

My personal suggestion is ask yourself if there were technical hurdles like mine that prevented players from experiencing your content, and correct them in the future without loosing the integrity of the game.

A group of people racing to the top of a sinking tower – awesome. Not being able to see your avatar so it can make the jumps you need – horrible. A hard challenge that not everyone in the game can complete – awesome. A challenge made hard because the client gets in the way – horrible.

Thanks for the hard work!
