Your right about the skirmishing line.
Marksman should really be the crit line, as it’s all about crit with opening Strike and bow stuff.
Skirmish should be conditions duration and power. It’s the melee tree clearly. Basically swap the twos stats
All the signet stuff should be in bm. After all our signets are all to do with our pets. The gm trait would be great as the ultimate beast mode power
Traps should be spread between skirmish and wild survival or one or the other.
Nature magic is fine, but is fine
I’m kind of a new player (low level off and on since release, getting more serious as some RL friends are playing now), just getting started with my ranger and I’m trying to figure out the path I want to take with him. I’m only really interested in PvE and maybe some WvW in small groups (like 5 people) with some RL friends of mine.
I’ve familiarized myself with most of the weapons now and sort of have a general idea of what I want to do.
I really like the axe, both MH and OH (not necessarily Axe/Axe on same set but I like both). I also like the sword and dagger for the evades. had some good fun just playing around with Sword/Axe and Axe/Dagger and dodging around. I’m not super into either of the Bows but i could see each having their uses. Greatsword I got bored of really fast and don’t really find it appealing.
As for traits I’m having a hard time seeing anything to like in marksman. I don’t see the appeal of a bunch of stuff geared towards the 1st strike (not going for huge first hit maul type builds). The only thing I really see that might be interesting to me is the signet grandmaster as the signets have some really OP effects that are awesome on yourself. Am I missing something?
I like Skirmishing to a certain point, though I haven’t tried traps that much and I might be more into it once I get more experience with them (why do traps which are mostly conditions, under the crit tree!?)
Wilderness survival I absolutely love as a tree. I found in the mists practice area I was easily killing stuff in full berserker gear with all the dodge and protection stuff.
Nature magic I see the potential but not sure healing and spirits is what I want to focus on.
BM I understand it’s importance but nothing really stands out for me. I’m not really into full pet builds either. Not that I don’t appreciate the pets importance, I just don’t like pure beastmaster type play.
Should i go with a condition build since I like MH axe? Drop sword for shortbow if I do that? I’m weary of trying full conditions as I’ve done the math and see a lot of shortcomings with the way conditions work in this game. I also tend to run with my friends doing world events and they have a habit of killing stuff really fast.
Condition builds for rangers are all about bleeds with axe and shortbow, and possibly burns from torch, correct?
I do find the RRR condition build with high toughness and regen appealing though as a concept.
Is something like sword/axe and axe/dagger (or warhorn maybe) viable for a power build? It seems to me that other than sword/LB/GS everything is a mix of conditions and power on the weapons. I don’t mind doing a mix of both but the math seems to indicate that you have to pick one or the other to focus on for stats. Maybe longbow with Axe/axe for closer skirmishing (and to tag more stuff before my friends kill it… haha)?
Sorry if that’s a lot but I appreciate any advice anybody has.
Bountiful power got nerfed down to 1% per boon a while back. It’s nice compensation for speccing heavy into water, but its no more of a % bonus than the 10% you can get from a variety of other traits.
Stop using a staff solo. Its a great weapon for grouping but solo it doesn’t offer much defense or burst damage, which is what you need to kill things quickly before they take you down.
Use D/D and lighting whip, for good sustained damage.
or S/D with the ring of fire, dragons tooth, pheonix, fire grab combo. That should kill most things pretty fast solo. Grab arcane blast instead of the lesser glyph, its good damage and an extra blast finisher.
Maybe spec a bit more dps for solo pve. The full bunker build is again more of a pve and group thing.
Oh wierd, I guess I just dont know how to link them properly.
So I should use axe/dagger and shortbow if I go full conditions, and sword/longbow for direct and crit damage?
A lot of ranger video’s I see go really heavy on toughness. Is that normal?
Thanks,
I was thinking something kinda like this
Longbow might be better, I thought shortbow might be a bit better for close up skirmishing but I obv. dont know a lot yet.
Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I’m going to try out the ranger and see how it does.
I picked elementalist thinking in terms of classic ranged dps but now I see this game doesn’t let anybody just do one thing. That’s a very good thing but it also means some classic archetypes I might like in a typical holy trinity rpg don’t work for me as well.
Going to try the ranger for a bit with sword and bow and focus on survival and conditions. I like the mobility and lots of endurance and evasion, with some ranged options as well. Now that I’ve read more I think I can be ok with the pet and at least utilize it if not specialize
Thanks for the advice.
Been looking at the skills and talents and I really like the whole wilderness survival tree. Tons of endurance and extra protection there. Is it viable to go 30 pts in that?
I guess I would want to focus on conditions if I did that right? Is it a good build to stack all the bleed stuff (on crit, sharpen Stone etc.)
Overall was thinking something like 20 marksman(steady focus and spotter) 30 wild survive(wild knowledge martial mastery and barkskin) and then maybe a bit in skirmishing (Sharpened edges) or nature (Vigorous spirits)
Probably use sword/horn and either short or longbow.
Is the sword root thing that bad? I didn’t even know till people mentioned it. I think I could live with it…
Am I on an ok track here or way off?

Considering trying out the ranger class despite my strong aversion to using pet classes in general. Only really interested in PvE
Tried out the mists for a bit and I really liked the way the swords play for melee (esp evasive strike with sword), and I’ve seen a few people post that sword builds are really good though I’m not sure if they meant pvp or pve.
I basically want to play as a mobile melee with good survival through evasion and dodging. Ideally I dont want to rely super heavy on the pet. I can learn to use it and live with it but I dont want to be useless if it dies.
I would probably use a longbow as ranged DPS to start fights and as my backup weapon.
Any builds and/or advice? (pick another class? lol)
Been playing an elementalist and while It’s somewhat the type of class I generally like to play (ranged DPS caster), I’m finding it just way too much with all the attunement swapping and number of things to do.
Maybe that makes me a noob, so be it. I’ve done my best to understand it and I get the ideas and am practicing, but I’m just not sure its for me. I’ve read lots of guides and tried all of the different weapons, and while I’ve gotten ok at some of the rotations and might stacking, etc, the better I get the more I really feel like I won’t be able to do this class justice in the long term, and I’m looking for an alternative.
Problem is, I just cant seem to find a class I want to play.
I’ve tried a few others in the mists but so far nothing has really caught my eye.
Oh and I am only really interested in PvE, I dont care about PvP of any kind. As long as its viable dps/survival wise in PvE I dont care at all if its good for PvP.
What I’m looking for and what I dont want:
- Prefer being ranged dps. Melee if at all i prefer more mobile darting around style (ranger seemed to fit the bill a little with swords, and guardian with the sword teleport thing)
- No pets. I just don’t like having to deal with them and relying on them for my abilities and damage. Rules out ranger (and necro?)
- No guns. Totally illogical I know but I’ve always just refused to use them for RP purposes. (so no engineer I guess – also seems just as bad as ele for # of skills)
- Not really too interested in pure condition builds, I’d rather do direct damage. Or at least have very clear weapons for one or the other. Elementalist I didn’t like that a lot of the higher damage skills are a mish-mash of direct damage and burns/bleeds.
I’m sure most people will come and recommend Warrior or Mesmer. Sounds to me like they are the most widely played along with Guardian. Is this game really that imbalanced right now?
I’ve never had a game where ive been this uninterested in so many professions/classes. I don’t know what it is. I’m usually not that picky.
I really tend to just play a classic dps mage so I figured Ele would be a no brainer. It’s just too complicated and really seems way too narrow builds to actually do dps, and it doesn’t even sound like the dps is that great anyway…
