I think most classes can be OP in the right hands. You can check all my posts, I don’t QQ, but I am concerned. I have noticed a few thieves that do the following:
See me outside of any range and vanish. I don’t move and they remain stealth, avoid marks at me feet and backstab me. I target them, get one swing in and lose my target, stealth. Lay more marks and wait. Eat another backstab (no damage to thief). Friend sees thief vanish AGAIN and decides to wait. Thief proceeds to do the same thing to friend and myself and we never get swings in. Thief got to attack, we didn’t.
Now the reason I posted here is because I hope this is a hacker of some sort, otherwise, what can you do when you can’t hit them? How can a thief stealth that much? I have one and it seems like stealth wears off all too quickly.
In case you missed it, AOEs (at my location and others) could not hit him. He took no damage and wiped 3 above average players in WvW by himself and took ZERO damage.
Can a GOOD thief do this indefinitely? If so, then yes, IMHO it is OP. Also, please explain how to do it (as I have a thief and want to win everytime as well). LOL
And why is OP so arrogant about rolling his face over most rangers? In WvW yes many are on their PvE builds or builds optimized for zerging they obviously cannot win you in 1v1 and dont forget that not everyone is 80 or fully geared. But do you even PvP? Cos if you do you probably wont be rolling your face over rangers. Or are most rangers in hotjoin that bad?
Simmer down, don’t get your panties in a bunch. If you read what I posted without your angry filter, you could discern that I am a PvP’er and do a lot of WvW as well. I never claimed to be great, nor am I. That said; it has been my experience, not my opinion, that I tend to beat rangers with more ease than most. I also noticed that many of those were bow users. I use a focus build that reflects projectiles, so maybe that is it. Either way, I would beat, equal to better geared rangers, IN MY EXPERIENCE, 90% of the time. It was refreshing to get my tail kicked underestimating someone who made the class seem 3 X more powerful than the 90% that I beat.
Regarding the shame on me (sarcastically) from the other poster for not getting to max range and all of that, I actually did. I was able to down the GS ranger numerous times doing this, but couldn’t seem to put the nail in the coffin. A little less lag, one less missed rotation and it could have went differently, but I wouldn’t bet on it. He played extremely well.
But the sword/? ranger had great survivability and his DPS was crazy. If I had no lag, a supercomputer and on my best day, I don’t think I could have beat him 50% of the time. It was a humbling experience and to make it even more funny (if it was the guy who asked if it was him), when this ranger came with more than one person, I did better than when I 1 v 1’ed him. They got in his way and I downed one of them before he stunned, blinded or whatever’ed me so that even when I stealthed he was still beating the heck out of me. I play a class, that feels like I have a counter to every class, if I play perfectly. This guy made me doubt that.
This post was about props and to ask a sincere question. I would like to pass this info off to my wife who is a die heart ranger player so she can try something new for pvp.
I have been pvp’ing (Mesmer) a lot more lately and by no means am I a elite player. Not even close. I do however hold my own consistently in both WvW and PvP; sometimes 2+ players to one. I run from no one. I win more than my share. And there are certain classes that I know are going to be work and many that are a free kill. Rangers, usually fall into the latter category.
3 nights ago I ran into the first of the non-bow using rangers. He was using a great sword and with all my normal tricks, I could not seem to be able to get any separation from this guy. I am a GS, Sword/focus shatter Mesmer and build for burst and I keep getting him down and he kept popping up. One time, he was literally DEAD and popped back up, with gap closers and melted my face. He took 3 of 5 1 v 1’s from me.
Then last night I played against a sword/dagger or a axe/torch combination ranger ( I am not positive on this) and was blown away. His DPS was through the roof and it seems like it took 3 of us to make his health go down. He used a hawk of some sort, which would blind us and most of his damage (from the logs) came from his pet(s). I am sure he was a BM.
I had a new build I was trying, and unfortunately some lag, but before I could shatter once sometimes he had me down. The confusion stacks seems to do nothing to him. This doesn’t happen with 100b warriors and not even thieves can burst me down that quickly.
Regardless of lag, regardless of new build, after facing him like 5-7 times, he was a much better player than I am anyways. That said, I never knew rangers were capable of this kind of thrashing in capable hands. So did you get buffed recently, or are the majority just not very good at their class, or do bows only excel in PVE?
My wife plays a ranger ONLY, lol, so inquiring minds want to know! Thanks!
Thanks Bas and Pyro for the feedback and thank you everyone for your assistance and podcast goodness.
To keep things rolling, I was wondering if EMPOWERED ILLUSIONS and PHANTASMAL STRENGTH stack with one another? I have searched the forums and the wiki, but have never received a response.

Bas,
Thanks for the information and the great podcast. I don’t think you intended this as a “mesmer questions here”, but it may start a super thread for FAQs. That said: I need some assistance of my own and hope that you Mesmer elite might give me some feedback.
I am torn between Mesmer, Guardian and <insert other class here). My guardian and Mesmer are 80’s, so I want to focus just on one. I do PVP, which I prefer Mesmer hands down. I do PVE, which I slightly prefer Mesmer and of course PVE, which I vastly prefer the Guardian. Apples and oranges, I know.
Why I mention this is because it surprised me. It isn’t the lack of defense in PVE, but the lack of offense. I am running 20/20/0/0/30 using GS/S-F. I have primarily Beserker’s on and don’t seem to be doing that much more damage than my scepter guardian, completely built for support. Equal gear and equal skill level. Granted, it IS more, but not super noticeable when doing PVE. I did run an alternative to that build 20/20/0/20/10 and used focus to block proj.
Even more frustrating is that I just did a guild bounty where the mob causes you to go on fire CONSTANTLY and quickly realized, or thought I did, that Mesmers have little to no condition removal.
All that said, my questions are:
Should I incorporate the staff for more DPS?
Any suggestions on builds that give good DPS, but with condition removals and slippery-ness.
Does GS and Sword really just not do that much damage?
What build does well (not great, leet or viable) in PVE, PVP and WVW?
Your insight is appreciated. Thanks!
I have a 80 Mesmer and Guardian and while both are good, they lack something for me. For my next class, I am trying to do a long range specialist and trying to decide between necro (power well build), warrior or ele. My goal is to do good long distance damage, have good support and survivability. Literally jack of all trades. master of none. Necro staff is meh and the ground target wells are only 900 distance. Ele which I think is odd, doesn’t seem to have good ranged options as well, but seems more survivable (with cantrips) than does the warrior.
As to why I am posting here is because I love the concept of the longbow for warriors. It is honestly one of my favorite weapons, but is hard to make a main due to low single target damage. I thought about doing rifle/longbow, but at my level (42), the rifle seems to do less than any other weapon at my disposal.
I leveled using axe/mace and longbow and that seemed to do well, but the traits were clunky and I couldn’t get either decent support or survivability. Please understand that I am using terms like “good” and “decent”. It seems like it can be done and after searching these forums and using the build calculators until my eyes bleed, I think it is time to see if anyone else is running something like this or has any constructive feedback.
Goal: Decent long range DPS in WvW and PVE. Able to survive initial burst from classes and not be perma locked down. Able to contribute to a group with banners, shouts or whatever will work. Speed a plus.
Or do staff ele or staff necro? Thanks for your time.
Build says bad link, even if I copy and paste. Please re-post. thanks!
Why not make them like banners? Something you can pick up and use, ie. relocate, and that serves as a weapon while being held, but isn’t directly target-able. Unlike banners, only allow engineers to pick them up.
Or, make them like a guardian’s spiritual weapon.
Bah, not good suggestions, but I think something drastic should be done to make them more viable and more importantly; practical.
Anybody play DaOc? Fire and forget; make them like the shrooms! It is a great concept, just poorly implemented.
If they are getting buffed, which I would think the new patch with the 100% healing improvement should have helped, what is a good turrent build?
I see little to no posts about them, their strengths and weakness and what builds they have good synergy with. I always liked the idea of turrents, but it never made sense before to try them. Thoughts?
