Please stop with the political life comparisons. It’s not the same thing. It’s a video game, a form of entertainment, much like a book or a movie. Everyone should get to win because it’s an experience you paid for.

Very well posted OP. I completely agree, and this is what I have been trying to get across in my own posts. It’s disappointing enough to miss something fun in a game, but I’m already dreading the elitism that will come with the rewards from these events.

Here’s the problem with the “there’s enough content without the events so you’re getting your money’s worth anyway” argument:

It’s an MMO.
Meaning the game progresses without you, it’s extremely competitive by nature, and people are comfortable with being elitist jerks.
Meaning those who didn’t receive pre-cursors yesterday, for whatever reason, are one step closer to being laughed at, insulted, and kicked from every dungeon group they get in, just for not having the right gear.

This does not follow Anet’s original presentation of ideas for this game.

Life Priorities vs. One Time Events

They don’t NEED to be anything except a company that makes a game. Personally, I would be happy with that. In fact, it would be great if I never had to interact with anyone from the company, as it was with the original GW and as it is with just about any other game.

But lately they’ve made this attempt to be a like a friend by making themselves seem accessible through the forums and coming up with all these events. They’re the ones trying to make a connection and asking for feedback. All I’m asking for is a little honesty and some follow through, just like you would expect from anyone before you trusted them, gave them your money, and set aside time for them.

Like I said, my job allowed me to miss a couple hours without consequence, but I heard several accounts of people taking off work. I think a little more information isn’t too much to ask, and would greatly benefit the masses.

The fact is, many of us are geeks who don’t quite have our priorities in a responsible order. If we’re excited about something, we take off work, stock up on energy drinks, and ignore real life for a while.

But sleep, our jobs, and our school ARE important, so all I’m asking is for a little more info with the advertisements of the one time events. I did miss a few hours of work today, which wasn’t a big deal because my job is flexible, but I was left regretting it after participating in today’s event. It was mildly entertaining, but nothing concerning story I would have been upset about missing, and certainly not worth the rewards considering there were almost no drops.

So basically, can you put in a hint to help us prioritize? We are promised a “once-in-a-lifetime, thrilling conclusion on November 18,” but for those of us having to make a choice, could you also add “mainly featuring a cinematic and just-for-fun battle,” or “including an excellent chance to get a special item which will never again be available,” or “the main features of the event will be accessible for several hours”?

An epic teaser description ending with “don’t miss it” leads to bad life decisions. A so-so event following said description leads to angry, poor, sleep-deprived geeks.

Thanks.

Jeffrey,

While I’m not completely satisfied with the solution (It has been a month after all… can’t figure why the old audio version wasn’t fixed instead of the new), I am THRILLED with the actual explanation. Better late than never. Lack of communication is solely why I have been frustrated with this game from day one, and why I turned down an interview.

To the rest of the community, possibly including ANet,

Why take down the warning on the wiki? At least let people know not to waste their time until it is fixed.

First of all, I want to thank the ArenaNet team for coming up with a system to solve this problem everyone is having. Regardless of reason or who’s at fault, there needs to be an option to bypass this feature when it’s causing problems for the player.

That said, I want to give my sincerest apologies to everyone at ANet. This issue has been resolved for me, and I now have to admit that, in my case, it was not at all your fault and there was nothing you could have done to “fix it.” I’m very sorry for my obvious impatience in my support tickets. After this I will look into having my ticket closed.

My issue was simply a case of extremely bad luck. Turns out I was right in that my email (a university email system) was not blocking things from Guild Wars or ArenaNet. It was blocking everything. It took me an entire week to figure this out, and along with authentication emails, I’ve also missed important notifications from my school’s financial aid office, and who knows what else. Apparently my inbox reached it’s limit just 4 hours before I would have received my first authentication email. Granted, I highly doubt anyone else could have possibly had this exact problem. I think the odds were just against me.

I assume you don’t actually get emails sent to the “noreply” address, but if you do, there should be about 300 letting you know your emails to me didn’t reach my inbox…
