Elite Specialization - my thoughts.

because they’ll add more as time goes on?

Will they? Nowhere among the official publications or websites concerning HoT have i found anything that hints this. If you’re right, i think they should make this more clear directly on heartofthorns.guildwars2.com, as thus far they’ve just revealed one expertise per profession.

Elite Specialization - my thoughts.

This isn’t nearly as important, but i feel it’s unnecessary to create a whole new thread for it:

Why call it “specialization” if there’s only one per profession? A specialization warrants multiple choice, as without it there’s nothing special at all; you’ll be exactly the same as everyone else. “Special” is a path one chooses that is very different from all others. And as there is only one path to choose for each profession, it just sounds really bad and is also misleading to call them specializations. There’s far more choices in the existing hero-point progression already. Thus they should be called “expertise” instead, as that is an improvement that doesn’t warrant multiple choice. Everyone can have the same expertise, but everyone cannot have the same specialization as the meaning of the word “special” more or less is “close to unique”. Everyone having the same path to go no longer makes it “special”.

Sorry for the English lesson, but this is how it actually works in the real world and i’m surprised that nobody at AN have picked up on this already. Considering that there’s so many different concepts to keep track of in GW2 already, i find it important to give each additional feature names that accurately describe what they actually are. Calling expertise “specialization” is the very opposite of this.

What if PvE was very difficult?

“If bosses or mobs in PvE could down you in 2-5 hits, would you spend more time playing open world PvE?”

If the drop-rates would be consistently (and severely) increased, absolutely.

Where's the fun in WvW?

This topic is written in sincere curiosity. It’s not a rant. And yes, i did search this forum with lots of different search-terms without any success in finding a topic that asks this question, which surprised me as i can’t believe it hasn’t been asked a hundred times before.

I’ve spent maybe 15 hours or so in WvW, playing Engineer and Mesmer on Far Shiverpeaks. I’m great with both of these classes, kick kitten in PvP, and have truly tried over and over with getting different angles of what the point of the mess that is WvW in this game may actually be, so please refrain from pointing out my skill level or the difficulty of playing these two classes (IF anyone actually does consider them difficult.)

I also have hundreds of hours of commanding forces in other games including in competition on elite levels. I know what a good a commander needs to do, although even i frankly can’t see how any commander can change the outcome in WvW in this game.

In other words; this isn’t just complaints from some random newb. I’ve played games and managed teams on very high levels.

And now to the point. In every single one of the cases, except ONE, the game-play i’ve had in WvW consisted of this:

1. Running around either alone, in a small group or in the zerg army.
2. Bumping into a force larger than mine.
3. Seeing a quick and total death to all players in my team’s force.
4. Respawn and repeat.

That’s at least ten hours of following an experienced commander, starting a well-planned and coordinated attack with lots of machinery, and being kitten from the side by a defending force that comes running. The Far Shiverpeaks forces i’ve played with have NEVER actually managed to take over OR defend a tower. NEVER.

The mind-set that inevitably creeps up on you after having such an experience in a game mode is probably pretty common: “In WvW, neither skill nor gear plays any role whatsoever as its always the team with the most players that will win every single confrontation.”

Now, here’s the thing: even if this may be considered fair from a general perspective, how does this make it FUN to play WvW though? Games are entertainment products, and some of us are obviously not entertained. Among my guild of 200 members, less than 10 have ever even tried WvW for more than ten minutes.

Whether or not my experience with WvW has been unbelievably unlucky or not, i don’t know. But after having tried several dozen times and only been able to take over one camp(!) and no towers or keeps in over 15 hours of trying absolutely everything to do so, i think it’s safe and fair to say that WvW lacks a certain panache.

Could someone experienced (and troll-free) player please answer me these two questions from YOUR point of view, and not that of the general public:

1. Where’s the fun in WvW for you?

2. How would you debunk the following statement: WvW consists of nothing but completely mindless clashes of forces that may as well be controlled by bots as the one and only outcome that can and ever will happen is that the larger force will win.

And to you commanders out there:

1. How does your nerves stand this nonsense? Do you realize that there are commanding roles in other games that are far more enjoyable? Do you still prefer commanding in WvW in GW2 over the others?

2. Have you ever commanded a force much smaller than that of an enemy’s and still won?

3. Do you feel that you’re truly making a difference?

4. When the scenario explained above happens, what do you do to turn it around to the advantage of your team?

Network Lag [Merged]

I live in Sweden and am playing on Far Shiverpeaks.

Since a month back the game has lagged so badly that i can’t play it any longer. The lags seems to circulate in severity. Everything can run smooth for 30 seconds, then skills start taking three seconds to activate, then ten seconds, then i start rubber-banding.

And then finally, one of two things happen:

1. The game appears to be running smoothly as all enemies and characters around me run around fine, but i keep taking damage even if i’m far away from enemies, i can’t activate any skills, and eventually get killed from this. It’s as if my PC is sending no data to the servers for several MINUTES, but is only receiving data as all characters around me move smoothly.

2. The above happens, plus i disconnect from the server.

Sometimes the last step happens within five minutes after i log in, sometimes after an hour. But during this time the previous mentioned lags are still there going back and forth with skills taking between two and ten seconds to activate.

ArenaNet, you really need to help us diagnose these issues for them to go away because they only happen in GW2. I don’t have any lags elswhere, so i couldn’t possible figure out this on my own.

Have AN removed visibility of squad members?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

RobbySpry.2671

It was quite a while ago, i tried to join a squad for the first time via a commander in PvE, and i saw all these red dots on the map which i presumed were the other members of the squad. This function seems to be gone now though, as neither the members of the squad can see each other, nor the commander see them. What’s the point of having squads for PvE at all if you can’t see each other on the mini-map?

Just take that game “Demon Souls” for example. It is universally accepted that it is one of the most difficult games around with both practical and impractical deaths.

I think there’s a misunderstanding between the haters and the lovers here.

Mate, i’m a huge fan of that series, and yet i probably got furious with the clocktower much quicker than most. DS have a REALISTIC difficulty; you’ll die if you let the enemies hit you, just like in reality. The clocktower has an UNrealistic difficulty because of the swarm of extra players completely blocking your view. I’ve never had any troubles with any jumping puzzles, and the only reason i can’t enjoy the brilliance that is the clocktower is because of the swarm.

I’m a big lover of the difficult. But there’s good and there’s bad. And the clocktower swarm is a horrible difficulty that ruins something really great.

I would LOVE a much longer and way more difficult version of the clocktower, if i could play it >>ALONE<<.

I'm disappointed by the event and the gem store, i feel ripped off

Totally!

The only thing i have ever considered buying gems for was the Box O’ Fun for the sake of my guild (i’m a manager there) which i’d say was worth it as it got a lot of laughs.

The rest of the store is an utter disappointment though. There’s so few things there. And at the same time, this store could (and is probably meant to) be a very important source of revenue for AN after the purchases of the game itself dies down, which it should right about now. They could make so much money from it if they just put more people to work on unique store-items.

Look at the store in Team Fortress 2 for example. There’s so much in there and so much added all the time that you’ll never run out of exciting things to check out. If Black Lion Trading Company was like that, AN would make more money from it than from the sales of the game.

And the more stuff there’s in there, the lower the prices can be for each item, making their customers actually buy the stuff.

What? You say you don’t care about the reward or pride?

Then just play the Tower! What’s wrong with you? You can play it. It’s right there. There is literally nothing stopping you from playing it over and over and over and over and over if you don’t give a kitten about the reward.

Uh, hello? There’s nine other players blocking my way and acid following me, forcing me to have to jump the same time as them, which IS the difficulty of the tower. That’s not a good kind of difficulty. It’s just really impractical.

Elitists just don’t get it.

First of all, you have no idea about the statistics, so don’t use that as an argument.

Secondly, most of us are just trying to have FUN, buddy. To experience everything in the game we paid good money for. We don’t care about the reward or the pride, like you do. The best and most fun creation AN has ever done is ruined because it’s not single-player instanced. The tower is brilliant and the only fun jumping puzzle in the game, and only a few lucky ones shouldn’t be allowed to enjoy all of it. That is a serious problem whether your ego likes it or not.
