Man, I forgot that you had to go through a dialogue to get speed boosts in cities, although with the Leader of the Pact III mastery, those swiftness givers are useless for those that have it.
i don’t have heart of thorns yet, which means i don’t get the luxury of having perma-swiftness in cities. so being able to just run by those swiftness-granting nps’s without having to talk about whatever it was they wanted to talk about (no one listened to them anyway) is really nice. i was pretty happy with that particular QOL update.
it would be cool to have repair merchants and anvils (especially anvils) work in the same way.
I’ll start things off by saying we could use an authentic jester outfit! It’d be a really cool, unique style to add to this game and with all the color options available, people could either dress up as a bright, traditional, fun-loving jester or they could throw on a bunch of blacks and reds and run around as a cliché evil, psychotic, murderous one. Like that one guy from League of Legends, Shaco. I found this particular jester outfit randomly browsing Aion’s costume page on their website and immediately thought, “Now this is something I could see in Guild Wars someday!” It’s not lore-breaking (which is something I always take into consideration), yet it’s wildly different from the usual trend of outfits we’ve been getting lately.
i was just thinking this would make a really great april fools day outfit! and it’d be much better than that random unfunny aviator thing they did last year. it would be especially humorous to see what charr and asura look like wearing a garb like this. of course, i’d do without the clown face paint that are shown in this screen cap. definitely like the big hat tho, with maybe a masquerade mask (like that gauntlet jester seabreeze posted).
like the aion jester costume infinitely better than that old gw2 one. the gw2 one just looks so… blah.
i’ll help this thread, too. even if it’s slow going, i mostly just hope the right people at anet look at this thread and get ideas for future hairstyle/beard additions.
speaking of beards, the norn can already get a mustache like this (even tho the texture of it is kinda ugly compared to the rest of the beards and i wish they’d fix that), but humans should be able to grow some pretty crazy beards, too. it’s been said before plenty of times but i’ll say it again, our human facial hair options just plain suck. i’m pretty sure the guy in this pic is just a human and look at that sweet fact pelt!
this thread also has some fantastic ideas for staff thief animations. while the thread itself is a bit old, i still feel it’s very relevant (not to mention important considering the current state of staff thief animations).
hopefully this’ll spark some inspiration for anet to consider reworking the animations so they’re not so blatantly recycled from the hammer.
sorry if ppl get mad for bumping an old thread, but given the fact that ppl are still talking about the abysmal animations for staff thieves, i would hope that a thread like this will hopefully get anet to consider doing some much needed reworks in the animation department. it’d be a shame if we were stuck with those ugly recycled animations, you know?
and seabreeze’s concept ideas are so beautifully done, too. i hope anet has at least looked at them.
time for a constructive bump because i wanna keep this thread in the back of anet’s mind for future hairstyle updates. there are just too many good ideas here.
i’d be pretty stoked if this was the kinda datamined stuff we’d find for human male hairstyles (i know it’s not, i’m just sayin)
haven’t heard anything from anet about whether or not we’d be getting new character customization options with HoT (hairstyles, faces, ears, horns, etc). maybe it’s just something they feel they don’t need to announce? or are we not even gonna get anything new in that regard?
also, i wonder if they’ll ever make any of the hairstyles in the kits baseline? i personally doubt it, but it would be pretty cool if they did. don’t know if that would make some players salty, tho… *shrugs
im gonna help keep this thread alive because i feel there are some really good suggestions in here that anet could use should they decide to, because they really do need to step it up with their human male hairstyles. so far, most of the human males right now (including their current face options) make this game look like fab wars 2. super shiny, glossy, boy-band cuts. no bueno
and yes, leviathan, i equally think a king varian hairstyle would be cool as hell! varian is definitely not the only guy to rock that hairstyle, either. here’re another couple examples of it. yes, baiken is female, but that hairstyle is pretty unisex anyway. would look awesome on either but male humans desperately need some cool hairstyles to catch up with the other races.
just saw these suggestions and a lot of them are really good, especially Seabreeze’s concepts! i also think those 2 robin stances Leviathan posted way up there would look really cool for our thieves!
also i’m glad this thread is trying to stay as positive and constructive as possible. for as much as these animations are lacking, getting angry and insulting the devs would not be a good way to convince them to consider some animation reworks.
you know, i’ve always thought the multiplayer characters in the assassin’s creed games have had some pretty cool designs. check out the dreads on these guys. i’d love to have dreads that were decorated with beads/ties/feathers or whatever. and to be able to individually die them from my color palette like Leviathan’s suggestion.
again, pirates do exist in the world of guild wars. so it’d be nice to have some hairstyles that were more gruff and “pirate-like.”
someone bring that man to anet studios and stick him in a mocap suit!
This is something I just thought of that still relates to hairstyles…
When it comes to hairstyles with accessories (and this goes for all races and genders), I’d like for them to give us the option to choose from our color palette (with all the colors we’ve currently unlocked) rather than being locked in to their extremely limited selection on the character creation menu. It’d also be great if we had the option to change the accessory color at any time without having to consume a hairstyle/makeover kit. It’s understandable to have to use a kit if you want an entirely different hair color, but for hair ties, bandannas, and whatnot? That shouldn’t require the use of kits.
They could easily fit a hair accessory slot at the upper right or lower left corner of the dye selection panel of the hero tab. If the character’s hairstyle doesn’t have an accessory, then it can just be left blank similar to if a character does not have an outfit equipped yet there is still a dye slot for it. And they could implement it in the same way the armor is currently, where in the character creation process you only have that small selection of dyes to choose from. Once the character is created, however, you can go into the dye panel and choose from all the dyes you have unlocked thus far.
Color schemes can change many times for certain characters throughout the course of their gameplay, so it’d be nice to be able to alter hairstyle accessories to go along with these changes.
i can totally get behind this. maybe they could also give certain accessories more dye channels instead of just one for all of them. like if a headband has a pattern or something. if they implemented something like this, it would give them more freedom to create hairstyles with accessories similar to many of the hairstyles in the original guild wars.
and i’ve always wished we could change accessory color at anytime. i hate being locked in to their tiny color palette.
Lumpy, I’m sure you’re being facetious, but I’d love that option too, for both sexes. It’d be nice to have a good shorn cut for both. I had such a stressful time making my latest character (a black female norn) and had NO appropriate styles (except for the AWFUL locs, why are they shiny!?) so I wanted to make her bald. But… side note, can we please adjust ears on humans? They look like elephant ears.
ikr? whoever heard of shiny dreads, man. lots of great ideas for those in here, anet (from seabreeze mostly, nice finds). i sure hope they’re taking some notes. charr and asura aren’t the only races capable of growing cool dreads, you know. pirates look much better when their hair isn’t ultra fab.
and now that you mention it, an ear slider for humans would be pretty nice to have, too.
Given that the berserker has been officially revealed as the warrior’s elite spec, I think now more than ever we need hairstyles more suited for such a profession. I’m not so sure that the influx of pretty boy, smooth and glossy hairstyles is very fitting for a berserker. To each their own I suppose, but there’s definitely a shortage of barbarian themed hairstyles (which may be attributed to the norn taking them all).
You know, I was just thinking the same thing. We’re gonna have a lot of fabulous looking berserkers out there, lol. Some of the long hairs in this pic would be cool for berserkers.
Hopefully Anet will include with HoT a handful of new hairstyles for not only human males, but for all races and genders (human males are just the ones that need it most).
i agree with both of you. we could really use some more rugged longish hairstyles (and beards!) to fit the theme of a berserker. not to say a berserker can’t be gorgeous, lol. it’s just that i’d rather have the option to not have a pretty boy setting himself on fire.
i want my enemies to fear me, not ask me for an autograph
Okay, so I know that beta tests are primarily for the purpose of gathering feedback from the players. My concern is this: is Anet only interested in feedback regarding balancing and functionality or will they be gauging visual/audio feedback as well?
Balance issues are most important, of that I’m well aware and I agree, but I do feel that there are some aesthetic issues that need to be addressed as well. The most prevalent one to me right now is the charr reaper’s greatsword auto-attack animation; it looks absolutely horrid, clunky, jerky, and just downright sloppy. I haven’t looked at it on the other races, but I intend to, and I’ll probably come back and post any comments I have about them afterwords. Another issue that I haven’t considered until someone else brought it up is the dragonhunter’s bow sounds; it recycles the same sounds as the regular bow despite being a magically infused weapon. On the flipside, I think the chronomancer’s audio and visuals are absolutely gorgeous, especially the wells. Really awesome to look at and listen to! Great theme overall!
Both of the issues I pointed out have their own threads in their respective sub-forums, but I thought I’d create a thread here for anyone else who has any feedback/suggestions regarding the visual and audio aspects of the beta.
i will bring this up again because i do feel this is important. and i totally agree with you the charr reaper’s auto attack with the greatsword animation. the first two hits are just recycled animations from the guardian greatsword auto attack, just slowed down. but instead of it looking more powerful and hard-hitting, it just looks like they’re moving in slow motion or under water. then the last overhead swing just looks downright awful. it does not transition smoothly at all. very sloppy work that i hope anet will polish up before release
interesting. i will have to test this myself next time i play as one of my thieves…
I certainly hope so. Again, just look at how much visual/audio polish was put into the Chronomancer’s skills. And if the Tempest is gonna get an update to their aesthetics, the Dragon Hunter deserves the same treatment.
i was just thinking how cool the chronomancer’s looks and sounds were. i’d really like to see the dragon hunter receive the same visual and audio “pop” that they do. they do seem a little underwhelming as is, so if the tempest is getting reworked a bit then the dragon hunters should too!
i guess i’ll add some wow references as well. i really like the back-spiked hairstyle, though i think i’d rather have the sideburns be facial hair instead of a part of the hair. and in the lower right corner of the first pic there’s another good example of a simple chin goatee with nothing extra to mess with it.
and look, i even threw in a couple more pics that show off leviathan’s favorite hairstyle lol (you’re welcome)! it is a pretty cool hairstyle afterall. and the last pic shows it off at a really nice angle (even if the graphics are primitive).
there are tons of “messy” hairstyles and the long hair clips terrible with a lot of armor and outfits.
I’d love to have clean buns for male characters (norn and human alike), to show off long hair without making it impractical for fighting and reduce the clipping issues.
A simple cinnamon, LWB, Nautilus or celtic bun looks clean and nice and can be worn either with a stick, fork (there are manly and unisex hairsticks, for example the one made of antler or bone) or just by hidden pins.
come on, Anet! do me a favor and give me long hair without the clipping issue! buzz cut just isn’t that fantasy like.
i totally agree that there are certain types of buns that men can pull off, like this guy. unfortunately, long hair will probably always clip. it’d be really hard for them to fix that considering it would clip differently with different armors. that’s why putting on certain headgear like the witch hat just makes your character totally bald (which looks stupid but whatever). hell, there are some helmets that completely shave the beard off of my norn. what’s up with that?
also a little off-topic, but this pic also reminded me that i wish you could actually wear certain pieces of jewelry, like earrings. considering a lot of players hide their helmets, i don’t think it would cause too many clipping problems.
but that’s a topic for another thread. more human male hairstyles please! good ones!
you know, i actually have played dragon’s dogma. i put it in again after i read your post to check it out and i honestly forgot just how cool the create-a-character mode is! guild wars really could take some inspiration from that game when it comes to the sheer quantity of different hair/beard styles.
man, i forgot just how friggin’ fun that game is. even after all these years… lol
It really is a fun game and worth a play if you’ve never played it.
Here are a couple more good screencaps I found. The first two use the same page, but the hairstyles shown are pretty nice (although female one is pretty basic). However, I do want Anet to take note of hairstyle 59, which are really cool ponytailed dreadlocks. And then the third pic just showcases yet another cool beardstyle that humans are more than capable of having. Just because it has a couple of small braids doesn’t make it exclusive to only norn.
i could totally use that beard in the last pic, lol.
and correct me if i’m wrong, leviathan, but isn’t there a varian ponytail in dragon’s dogma, too? haha, i’m surprised you haven’t mentioned that yet. my character in that game looks awesome, though. he’s tough, gruff, buff, and always ready to kill things! i made him in gw2, but of course, i made him a norn since obviously the humans weren’t gonna cut it
I agree. The sounds were the first thing i noticed.
[twang, twang, twang] I am so sick of hearing the twang of the bow!
Magical arrows require magical sound effects.
Yes! This!
I feel like even the animations could use a spruce up but. . . the sounds are the worst. Save them ;_;
yes. very yes. so much yes.
i know it’s just audio but they do make a pretty big impact on how a weapon feels. the recycled sound effects for what should be a magic bow (or magic arrows at least) makes it feel pretty underwhelming to say the least.
Has anyone here played Dragon’s Dogma? Anyone at Anet play Dragon’s Dogma? The create-a-character mode in that game is really good, and there are a lot of really nice hairstyles in that game. 50 different types of hairstyles as indicated by the first screen! A great variety for all types of heroes.
These aren’t the best screens to showcase what it has to offer, but it’s still a pretty good preview if you haven’t played that game yet (it’s fantastic, btw). And check out the second screen: 26 different types of facial hair! I’ll try and get better screens of some of the cooler hairstyles offered in that game later on.

Depending on where you look, you can even find Skyrim hairstyle mods that would look really cool in GW. Like these ones, for example. Look at all these different types of ponytails the Dragonborn can get (and is that a wild Varian-styled one I see in the third row? I sure as heck think it is, man). These pics are all female characters, but I’ve used this mod before and they can all be used on males and most of them still look great (with some minor clipping issues since they weren’t originally modeled to fit on a man’s head). Notice that a lot of them look kinda messy, not all pristine and fabulously glossy.
ah, those are the types of messier-looking ponytails i’d like to see eventually make it into the game as human (not norn) hairstyles. hell, even that messy bun hairstyle looks cool. several of those would be great for my pirate character
and that guilty gear gif you posted was golden
also we have a distinct lack of messy hair/dreads that’d be suitable for pirates. given that there are pirates in this game, you’d think there would be more options to go with that. they’ve already given other races hairstyles that come with headbands, so humans should be able to share in that too.
i’ve got a couple characters who are pirate-themed myself, so it’d be cool if someday down the road they could resemble more rugged looking pirates. he’s got the kit exclusive ponytail right now, and it works, but it’s very… shiny. and glamorously smooth. i need a ponytail that’s lower and more unkempt, not so pristine for my pirate (like the guy in the last pic). yarr
and yes, a goatee like jack sparrow’s would be pretty cool too.
They absolutely need some masculine/kitten hairstyles & faces. We get in Anet, you like boyband/metro/effeminate/GQ hairstyles & faces. & you can have them in there. but instead of having it be 85% pretty-boy could it be at least 60/40?
& that’s not even getting into the beards, which are laughable.
that’s pretty blunt but tbh, where is the lie?
i’ve got some characters who are supposed to be tough-looking knights and who are supposed to be human. but since i don’t want them looking obnoxiously “cute” i’m probably just gonna settle with making them norn since they have better faces, hair, and beards all around. but really, i shouldn’t have to do that. humans can be bad@ss too you know!
i hope anet takes some ideas from this thread. i’d LOVE to see a lot of these hairstyles eventually make it into the game, especially the op’s king varian hairstyle. that shop you did looks really cool man! also like the idea of new dreads. only one style of dreads for humans currently? lame…
diablo 3’s barbarian has a cool looking beard and hairstyle. AND he looks like he’s seen his fair share of battles!
