Don’t keep a character you’re not having fun with. This is my number one rule. I have remade a couple characters quite a few times just because I didn’t like the profession I chose for them. It only takes me 15 levels or so (not that difficult) before I come to a solid decision that I DO NOT like a certain profession. I find that it’s best to reroll before level 20, because that’s when you really start investing in time and gold.
Things to Consider
#1: Learn all the abilities with ALL the weapons.
#2: Find what weapon sets work for YOU.
#3: Don’t forget about utilities.* They can sometimes turn your frown upsidedown!
#4: Have FUN!
I can tell you straight out that the Mesmer and Necromancer DO NOT fit my play style. I’ve given each quite a few chances to get on my good side, but I ultimately had to let them go because I just couldn’t have fun with them. On the other hand, I absolutely LOVE the Elementalist, Warrior, and Engineer. It’s all player preference. You not liking Engineers doesn’t mean Engineers are bad, and me not liking Mesmers doesn’t mean Mesmers are bad. I just can’t have fun with their abilities, and there’s no harm in that.
If you really don’t know what to play, I would suggest that you make one of each profession (and yes, you may have to delete a couple, especially if you only have the five character slots that ANet gives you). There are SEVEN other professions for you to try out, so don’t give up hope! It might take some time, but when you find the class that is right for you, you will be happy you put in the effort!
I hope this helps!
(*I didn’t like the Engineer class until I finally unlocked Bomb Kit. That’s when things started to pick up!)

Try typing in their character’s name if the GW2 user ID doesn’t work!

Like other people have suggested, you may not have been bringing the right weapons with you. I don’t know the elementalist that well, but after lecturing my guardian friend, I was able to convince him that using a greatsword against many opponents that were spread out and attacked from range wasn’t going to go well for him. Single-target ranged (scepter) was the better way to go for that fight. Stay ranged, and focus them down one at a time, especially if you’re having trouble. Position yourself well and pull the enemies towards you (try not to aggro them all at once).
It’s even tougher sometimes because the NPCs that fight with you are useless after a while. Sure, they can take the brunt of the damage while you pick at guys one at a time, but then they’re going to start dropping like rocks. Then all the enemies turn onto you! I find it easier to complete missions when they’re all dead sometimes. lol
Plus, I always grossly outlevel my personal story, so I usually never have these kinds of problems. I can totally see where you’re coming from though. I’ve been there. Try out different weapon sets, or bring a friend! That’s all you can really do until ANet (if they do) decides to do some adjustments.

I find myself zooming in rather close to my character during gameplay. I really like being up front in a fight, not looking down on the battlefield from above. So yes, an over-the-shoulder camera option would be totally awesome! You have so many amazing points, so I wonder if you’ve thought about this one.
I don’t know if you’d played a game like Vindictus where the camera automatically moves to wherever your mouse is. That’s actually how play GW2. This means I am constantly holding down the right mouse button just to get the same effect- so wherever I move my mouse, that’s where my camera goes. I don’t rely on left-clicking in this game, so I can afford to play like this. All my skills are bound in convenient places, and I have learned to work with the auto-targeting feature to be in my favor.
But I wish I didn’t have to constantly hold down the right mouse button just to play this way. If they ever did get this far, adding some kind of a crosshair in the middle, or a dot, so I could aim AoE spells better would be super neat.
ANet does have more pressing matters to focus on, but sometime down the line it would be nice if they could reviewe the camera to make it more friendly for people like us! +1

I logged in this morning to one of these messages in my inbox. I didn’t quite know what to do with it so I left it there. Once I log back in tonight I will definitely have to report it!

Thumbs up to the OP. I do agree with you.
Although I am not offended by these ‘bannable’ names, I turn off ‘Show All Player Names’ just to avoid the whole thing. Out of sight, out of mind. Works like a charm. I’d rather not deal with players and their incredibly lame name choices, even if I do get a laugh out of it. lol
