1v1 Balancing is all that matters

Honestly the OP point is being bashed down, but he has one point.

The games combat is not like Leauge of legends or any strategy game of that nature for one core difference. League of legends is designed around the eventual 5on5 team fight which makes up the last phase of the game.

Guild wars 2 is not like other games in the sense the team fight never happens. So there is no need for balancing around it. Instead fights will happen mostly in 1on1’s 2on2’s occasionally 3on3’s and rarely anything higher.

Now your left with very few roles where a game like league of legends needs a tank/initiator a ranged ad carry, an ap carry, and a jungler, and a support. Each have clearly defined roles that work together to help for great success in the game through all the phases.

What are GW2 roles? Its bunker or people trying to take a point away from a bunker. there a few combinational strategys but there is not 5 roles to fill and the matches are not built around large team combat. So in the end, the balancing has to be built towards the typical fights that will happen.

basicly, just because the matches are 5on5 doesnt mean you should balance around 5on5 fights that never happen.

Lol’s roles took a long time to become as defined as they are, and even then every tournament showed the world a new meta to follow. Gw2 is no where near that far progressed. Also, try talking to some of the higherups in spvp, they can list off quite a few important roles that should be addressed when creating a team comp.

This thread is an embarrassing pile of whiny kitten.

If every class was balanced to be a master duelist people would get bored and leave. Rotating balance, along with dynamic team compositions is what keeps people interested. Stop crying that you lost 1v1 to a duelist class, that’s their job, learn how to play the game.

Adding in a balance on whether the class or spec is better at 1v1 or team fighting adds another level to professions as well as pvp matches and the game in general. People don’t want to sit there with their thumb up their kitten and pick from a Ford Focus and a Honda Civic, they want to pick from a variety and feel special for doing so. Oh no a Suzuki Ninja cant carry four passengers comfortably like the Focus, kitten the Ninja it shouldn’t be allowed on the road. Oh also, kitten the rednecks that want a pickup. Screw their desire to drive that half ton of dirt they dug up to roast a pig into the sunset so their 18 sons can build a jump for their ancient dirt bike.

What you and arenanet want is rock, paper, scissors… that would be fine and dandy, except its currently rock, paper, scissors, and Goku. Goku has close to no counters.. because of that, everyone wants to be Goku. Everyone thinks Goku is how all classes should be.

We players want to win because of our skill, not because I played the appropiate class. Balancing for 1v1 is the only way to go.

Then should you not be asking for rock paper scissors?

Asking for Goku vs Goku is only going to make things worse and shorten the lifespan of this game.

You can’t win in league of legends by bringing all ad carries, you can’t win in starcraft by bringing only marauders, and you cant win in counter strike by only buying scouts.

If these people wanted to play 1v1 then they would have bought capcom vs marvel, not GW2 the Massively MULTIPLAYER Online Role Playing Game. Multiplayer games are built around playing with a team and a balanced around playing with a team.

If you enjoy duels, good on ya. Wait for the custom arenas and have fun. All i’m saying is stop trying to ruin it for the rest of us because you refuse to recognize that team composition is part of the decision making process that is pvp in this game. Being prepared for a fight is just as important as performing well during the fight. Roles that specs can fill is a complicated and interesting part of that preparation and taking that away leaves pvp dull and flat. When it comes down to a pure, one on one, absolute skill match, why bother with variables for people to whine about. Why have different characters available, different builds available, different weapons available, different maps available, and team mates to further multiply the options in front of you. Your better off 1v1 fox only no items final destination…

the standard is as such:
ele, engy, ranger and guard for bunker (usually two of these)
mesmer, ranger, guard for back point control and utility or some specialty
trap rangers and necros for condi control (can play a condi theif here) (can play two)
engy, mesmer, theif or warrior for burst (one of these, dead team if you take more)
guard, engy, thief, ele or warrior for far point assault (usually come from another section)

mix n match till you start winning

combination examples would be
2 ranger, guard, ele, mesmer
necro, ranger, guard, ele, mesmer
necro, mesmer, guard, guard, thief
engy, necro, mesmer, guard, ele
ele, ele, ranger, ranger, mesmer
engy, engy, ele, mesmer, necro
etc etc….

best way to come up with a comp?
play what your and your friends like, when you lose sit down and figure out why instead of crawling here looking for support. then adjust and move on.

ninja edit: eles are good runners, so are any other class that can take the hits and keep moving. Rangers are awesome with sword dagger greatsword. Guardians pop some stability and walk right past people.

The thing about thieves is that that have a low skill floor and a high skill ceiling. They can be played well at all levels, but become strong early on and wane towards the higher end. Kind of the opposite of eles, high skill floor low skill ceiling. Theyre hard to pick up but once you get attunement dancing you dont have a ton of room to grow into.

My advice if you have problems with thieves? Get off the skill floor.

Nah hotjoins are where people go to feel good at this game.

There is no skill, there is no strategy, there is only the zerg. Join, or feel its wrath :P

I’m sorry, CC loves to stick to the lack of stability called a thief. Also try going full glass thief into a team fight, you’ll get two HSs off before you die to aoe.

Ele has some wiggle room between scepter dagger and d/d.

Necro is good man, why you hatin on condis?

Honestly though Mesmer I guess. If your set on a fotm class which is understandable considering the pace of balance patches… Thief isnt great unless your in hotjoins or your a god of glass like caed.

Id really like to say play whats most fun to you. If you get decent with an up class right now when they get buffed up youll be amazing

Just dropping by to post in an epic thread. This Arheundel dude must have spent hours grinding up to 400 trolling.

Seriously, two thieves on spirit. They cant even carry the orb, let alone be effective in the team fight at mid.

Sush RaiJinn, this kind of crap is why Anet is so hesitant to talk with us about what they are working on.

This is of dire importance!

Sat with a dev for hours last night in the anvil rock mists, constant talk about how to improve the game happened around him. The only time we got a word out of him was when someone said hello and he said hey back. Seeing a dev in game, especially in the mists where the most work needs to be done was nearly a miracle. Hopes were had that Anet actually plays this game and is working towards a brighter tomorrow. Even if this is a possibility the stonewalling that went on was like taking golf shoes to your face after stepping on a lego.

Sad memories were had of the dev chat that would happen in game during the BWEs…

How do you get into pvp these days....

There’s barely anyone playing. I have to guest to anvil rock to see anyone in the mists. Not only that, but everyone runs 25-30+ rank requirements on pugs. I’m still pretty new to spvp, but I’m not new enough to think that hot joins are a good place to learn how to play. They seem like such a waste of time, and only really teach me how to stick with a zerg. Good play in those rooms is rewarded with death to four people while your team loses two points with a numbers advantage.

PvP guilds were a good idea until they were implemented. I’ve join four so far and all have fallen into desolation. Barely anyone is on and none of them represent so guild chat doesn’t even reach them. PvP seems like so much fun, and there’s so much room to grow as a player, but there is such a brick wall in front of me.

I cant even get a requirementless pug together because there aren’t enough lowbies playing. I get to around three people and then no one else will join because they have “standards”.

Seriously… What can I do to find some people to play with and actually learn something worthwhile about pvp in gw2.

The Dueling Effect (Dueling Servers)

in PvP

I have another side to the dueling debate.

One of my favorite things its to theory craft on my various characters, testing builds and set ups and what not. Golems are nice and all but real results come from play testing. This… Zergfest that we call hot joins are extremely counterproductive, you either have no visible affect on the battle following the zerg, or you rez and shamble back to a point and start searching for your missing teeth. Dueling servers so far are the only reasonable place I have found outside of paid tournaments to test a builds effectiveness. I can get a few friends or even new faces to take on my build 1v1, or even 1v2 1v3 etc to simulate tournament style fights.

Honestly I think this is more of a problem with hot joins having such high player caps and not being restricted to 5v5 to match the other game modes. But, dueling servers have provided the community and opportunity to solve this problem even if only slightly.

If you guys need another, I’m usually happy to play around in spvp. As far as a team goes, if things go well we’ll see what happens from there.

Flanking Strike during Sword 1 chain

in Thief

I don’t really get why they would make sword chain 2 and 3 channeled. Ranger makes a little sense with the mobility tacked onto their chains, but even in that case not being able to dodge out of the abilities is counter productive.

Flanking Strike during Sword 1 chain

Sampi.5079

So I’ve noticed that aside from the other issues people have with flanking strike, it likes to queue itself behind sword chains part 2 and 3. Not much of a delay but long enough to allow my squishy body to soak up that warrior axe burst just before the evade starts. Is there a reason an evade skill is queueing itself rather than breaking the channel like dodge does?

All bugs and what not aside this seems like a bit of a big deal for the evade based s/d thieves out there…
