I know, I was just hoping that they may do it and give a different heal to core ranger. I was basing my worry off of the DH trap heal which does require foes to trigger… we’ll see I suppose.

Well there ya go on the freeze! This should happen,

Has it been verified Healing Spring will be a trap?

I know it is the only place it really fits in the current Ranger kitten nal, but I am REALLY hoping that is not the case. I have come to love this ability and the idea of relying on enemies to control my healing just comes off as clunky.

I suppose my only hope is that Druid gets consecrations and HS gets moved there.

EDIT: Agreed with the basic concept of this idea, though it probably should be more baseline to bring it up to the level of DH traps.

Slow on Frost Trap seems kind of redundant, what about a brief stun where they are encased in ice like the recently released Reaper ability?

Thank you for all of the responses. I think I will play around with some of these ideas.

I will make a change to Healing spring, maybe see about using drakes to blast since I like my projectile reflection.

I haven’t really messed with Spirit of Nature tbh. I will play around with it.

I may consider based on incoming damage working in blue moa and fern hound.

Like I said I just wanted to help with some active support survivability wise both for my own entertainment and to help the party as we play around in different instances.

Thanks a ton!

Yeah..kinda what I figured. I just thought I would ask if someone had something. Stone Spirit…maybe. I was mainly looking to help with survivability being that we don’t really have the consistent party/organization to blast fire fields and stack might through encounters.

Warhorn…maybe. I could consider doing sword/axe and sword/warhorn as I do use Whirling Defense with some amount of frequency. I would miss out on the initial vuln and damage from rapid fire and would need to swap the longbow back in for fights I need ranged on.

I could also try warhorn and trade troll’s unguent for Healing Spring and… Signet of the Wild maybe for Flame Trap and use some blasts to help out? Maybe Healing Spring, and sword/torch with drakes for the blast?

I am not trying to re-invent the wheel. The wheel is great. I was just looking to find some middle ground between DPS and helping us survive just a little bit better.

Hello.

I am part of a guild that is just recently getting into explorable mode dungeons. We are not remotely hardcore with generally myself and the guild leader as the only constants, with at least one person not at 80 every time. We are just having fun, experiencing the places as a group and eventually getting through the dungeon.

I am currently running the meta build almost 100%. I don’t run cats, I use drakes. I can’t help it. Generally I can keep the cats alive (when we aren’t wiping anyway) I just don’t like cats. I have my frost spirit, my sword/axe and I have my spotter.

I was wondering if there is any small change that people have seen success with that I could make to have a little more active party support. Maybe small talent changes or using different pets with minimal drop in my damage.

Right now I use Whirling Defense on projectile heavy fights but that is all I have. I went to Guardian for awhile and LOVED everything I was capable of doing for the party between Virtues, Hallowed Ground, Stand Your Ground, Wall of Reflection, and Purging Flames however I just love the Ranger concept too much.

I know I will never have everything the Guardian has but if there are any changes that others have found really useful I would love to hear about it.

Thanks!

My overall thoughta since I unintentionally but carelessly derailed the discussion earlier.

Initially I actually loved the name. This was due to the idea that I could see the idea of Guardian, a champion of virtue turning a little darker. The idea of justice turning to vengeance in light of the untold death at the hands of the dragons. Yes Dragons do seem to be part of the natural order but the concepts of justice and vengeance don’t necessarily care about that and in some ways are naturally opposed to natural instinct to reach a higher ideal.

I could see my character who is a Sylvari who was born to cleanse Zhaitan’s undead with fire turning to hunt the dragons and their minions as he turns to revenge having lost so many of his ‘family’ Especially due to the fact that this xpac is taking place in a jungle.

That being said after the Ready Up I am less than favorable to it just because I feel like the abilities don’t necessarily match that concept. The traps and longbow options are very nice however it doesn’t come off as a predator who I would picture as something that stalks and lies in wait for his prey.

A name like ‘Avenger’ or ‘Zealot’ is a lot more fitting. I appreciate that they are trying to branch off and think outside the box. The abilities just have to match the concept.

I feel like there is a big difference between offering feedback to the development team and outright insulting them while you are still spending time eating up the content that they generated.

A whole lot of option B is going down and it completely dismisses their work.

I am not referring to you Leo G.

What does “eating up their content” have to do with anything? We are giving feedback and not attacking the devs personally. We don’t have to take everything they give us joyfully though. It is their job, afterall, to make content that is consumed and enjoyed, not just accepted with disdain. You understand this is their job, right? It’s not like we’re criticizing free work done by a street artist for our amusement.

Whoosh.

Nothing “wooshed”. You just didn’t have a very good point. :P Pointing out reasons (lore, aesthetic, archetype mismatch, etc.) we don’t like the name IS feedback, even if you want to pretend it’s useless criticism. We aren’t just sitting around saying “we hate it it sucks change it.” We’re offering explanations of why it’s a bad fit for the class and offering many alternatives.

….Yes whoosh. I said “I feelI feel like there is a big difference between offering feedback to the development team and outright insulting them” as in several of the posts on this and other threads there were many references to laziness, unoriginal or stupid which are not constructive and tiresome to read. Making statements for why you do not like the name make perfect sense.

Maybe I made a mistake by calling out one person, his post was just the bottom one and I was agreeing with his statement of how/why he was bringing up his concerns.

So please take a breath and continue using this thread for it’s purpose instead of looking for a fight with someone who is agreeing with you.

Just voicing in that I am very excited about the name and the concept.

Am I the only one that likes the name?

I actually love the name. As soon as I saw it I immediately was excited. Dragonhunter is a very common fantasy archetype that includes specific skills from all types of media and games (like the tabletop variety). I don’t think it was laziness on the part of Anet (yes everyone hunts dragons) as it was describing an archetype just like Druid, or Necromancer. It is very different that I bet anyone expected.

I am very excited to have my guardian, a wielder of justice mold his abilities to make these creatures of destruction his prey. It feels especially fitting being that he is a sylvari.

If you search back far enough (~1 year) you’ll see similar issues with spirits. Spirits are better than they used to be … but they still aren’t good … they just used to be completely horrid as opposed to this thing that is so close to being useful outside of some small niches.

There’s no reason to “get out”. Play what works for you and you enjoy and keep on trucking :-p

That is the issue, and why I am getting out. Well not exactly that spirits could use some work, more that my bar practically never changes from lack of useful skills (PVE), I am not confident the pet system will have any drastic changes and adding staves is not very exciting for me.

Conceptually I love the class but guardian or engineer are way more active (read:fun for me) of a playstyle unfortunately. I have held on for awhile now but HoT will be a fresh start.

I feel about Ranger Spirits similarly to how I feel about some of the Mesmer nerfs and inconsistencies.

Compare Ranger Spirits to Warrior banners

  • Why can the spirits even be killed?
  • Why are the bonuses from Spirits less than those from Warrior banners (especially when not traited for a higher proc change)?
  • Why are these weaker bonuses from Spirits plagued with an ICD when the Warrior banners’ bonuses are not?
  • Why can Warriors use their banners for blast finishers but my Spirits don’t even make Combo Fields with some of their AOE area activate-ables (just look at Frost Spirit’s … why isn’t that one? <_<).

Compare Ranger Spirits to Engineer turrets

  • Why can the Spirits be killed so easily?
  • Why can the Spirits be critically hit?
  • Why are the Spirits’ activate-ables less responsive than the Turrets’ activate-ables?

I see cons of Ranger Spirits versus the other two similar utilities … but I see no benefits to offset them. This is what irks me about Spirits.

So much yes. I searched back through the forum to see if anyone else had brought this up and I was surprised to not find anything. I am glad to see I am not living in crazy town.

It is a little sad because ranger conceptually has everything I want out of a class but…it is kind of like a bad relationship, I know I should get out I just don’t want to.

I have been playing around with other classes in preparation for HoT mainly because I am not extremely excited for druids unless they use this opportunity to revamp the pet system. My hope is that if you stay ranger you get an in depth pet system but if you go druid your focus will be more on nature spells (they mentioned that there would be advantages/disadvantages to picking up a specialization) buuuut I don’t think it’ll happen.

To the point, I have been playing engineer and was thinking why can’t spirits last until destroyed like engineer turrets? They both give bonuses and have abilities to activate when they are out, and it is not like spirits are so great that it would be game breaking to have them last longer than a minute or so. They generally die to AOE anyway but I feel like it would be a small quality of life fix.

perhaps make it stack in intensity but have it be the opposite of torment.

So you take lots of damage if you stand still but take half if you move around, also 1/4 of the damage if you dodge roll (stop drop and roll type of thing). This would make it similate that “Ahhh! im on fire!” type of running around crazily like you see in movies and other videogames.

I think is idea is kinda genius actually. The idea of debuffs that make you think about how you act add a lot to the experience.

That may mess with pve balancing which I know is a big part of the push with this xpac but it could work.

I wasn’t even thinking about the specialization to be honest. I was thinking the opposite actually. Maybe if someone goes druid the pet mechanic will stay close to what it is now but with it’s own added bonuses (staff, more nature magic, etc.)

If someone were to stay ranger however there could be more customization in your pet.

They said there would be pros and cons to choosing to go into a specialization

Ranger Pet Question

Saulot.7259

Hello. Let me preface this with the fact that I do not want to get rid of the ranger pet. Ranger is conceptually everything that I have wanted in a class: nature-themed, pets, and melee.

That being said I was curious if anyone has heard anything about potential changes to ranger pets such as having more control/potentially a smaller pet trait line or some other mode of customization.

I want to stay ranger but in the current system I am no more attached to my pet than swapping out a utility skill. Engy is starting to look tempting to level before the patch if I don’t have much to look forward to.

Thanks!

Objectively the worst pet system ever made

I just want to second the opinion of the OP. One of my biggest issues is not really the viability of the class since in long running MMOs that tends to be a sine wave of patches and nerfs. It really comes down to my pet and generating any sort of attachment to him.

The playstyle does seemed alot like Pokemon though the NPCs suggest otherwise. I have tried to care about my pet but with the no-challenge taming system and no customization (plus whenever I switch pets it clears their name anyway) it is impossible. The issue is so built into the system I don’t see how it is fixable without a major overhaul, unlike viability in pve/pvp.
