  • I love Tyria gliding! I swear I’m finding chests and new things in places that you shouldn’t have been able to reach before the change. Hint: Look around the upper ley line chamber in Dry Top.
  • PvP changes seem solid. Digging the hybrid amulets, especially on bunkers from the previous meta.
  • Toggleable autotargeting. This is such an underrated change for someone who regularly swapped between having it on and off depending on the profession and situation.

Alacrity… maybe let it keep at least 75% of its former effectiveness for the mesmer to manage those long cooldowns that remained untouched despite the nerf? The chronomancer line is 100% utility, and mesmers still hit like wet noodles. Quickness and alacrity are all the profession brings in PvE, and any cooldown over 40s in PvP really needs to be worth the slot.

Woah, woah, woah! If anything is coming back, it’s the Potion of Wolf Transformation that disappeared when the NPE swept in and ‘sanitised’ the starter zones. I want that kitten tonic back, please! There was no need to remove it. If anything, I’d like to see more karma tonics.

Oh, and the fix to make sure that Plant Dog Transformation actually did turn you into a plant dog as described was great, but there was no replacement for the brown wolf it formerly turned you into. It didn’t do what it said it did on the tin, but it was still useful!

Now, the only way to become a normal wolf of any kind is to use this recipe, which is hella expensive. Why are the specific animal tonics so expensive, anyway? They’re lots of fun, but so, so costly.

The people demand access to tonics! Down with tonic prohibition! If I want to drink myself into a chimeric stupor, I should be able to do so!

  • I have invested a considerable amount of time into finding ways to break out of maps, resulting in a large number of awesome discoveries and cool screenshots. I consider them extreme jumping puzzles, where the only reward is success and discovery.
  • I find taunting in PvP hilarious, even when it’s directed at me. When a member of my team advised enemy thieves to uninstall their games the other day, I was still laughing when the match ended.
  • In dungeons, back when instance owner was still a thing, I’d always open. If I ended up with a particularly obnoxious or incompetent group, I’d sometimes just leave the party halfway through, destroying the instance.

What’s up with rangers deliberately using LB 4 in response to someone asking people not to knock bosses back, by the way? Goes for any class with knockback, in fact.

I’ve seen people burning through defiance and playing football with champions with such enthusiasm after being asked not to that they were completely oblivious to an enemy zerg charging in and rolling over them. We could have capped if people had only left the boss in the AoE fields and allowed warriors to do their Hundred Blades thing. Petty Wars 2 right there.

In the Equipment tab of the wardrobe, you used to be able to click on a gear slot, and it’d filter your inventory to show only items you could equip in that slot. You could also just select a filter from the dropdown menu above the Search bar. It seems that you can no longer do this.

It’s not a major issue, but it made swapping weapons on the go just a bit quicker, and I’d like to see it fixed.

There is software like JoyToKey that allows you to configure your controller input to be recognised as keystrokes, and the analog stick to serve as the mouse. It’s pretty simple to set up. I don’t know if it falls under acceptable use of third party software, but if anything, I’d say it’s more of a handicap than a help. You can’t really replace the mouse as a peripheral device when it comes to managing your camera and placing AOEs.

I’ve been levelling a character through the asura starting zones and I can’t help but notice that the laser attack is dealing ridiculous amounts of damage. A third of your HP with each strike, almost, and the lasers themselves fire pretty rapidly. The ‘Champion Bandit Foreman’ in Kessex is the worst example of this. He can blast you from full HP to defeated within about five seconds.

The situation isn’t really comparable, Shyhalu.

It would be more like if they removed Heart of the Mists and structured arenas and put all the PvPers on a one big, eternally overflowing map with WvWers and PvEers, then flagged everyone as hostile and said, “There you go! This is how PvP is going to be from now on.”

I don’t doubt that there are some people who want world PvP to be the default, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. It would be a little more diplomatic on ArenaNet’s part to cater to all styles of play, rather than spiting one to encourage the other. All that does is turn the community against one another.

GW2 has a select number of supported languages, so it is useful to know at least one of them. It is preferred and considered courteous to publicly speak the native language of your server, but it’s common for players to seek out same-language guilds if you speak a language not supported by ArenaNet.

I don’t mind which languages people speak, ‘long as they don’t expect me to understand it. I wasn’t raised bilingual, unfortunately, and learning a new language at this point in my life would take time and effort I can’t commit to.

Megaservers and RP

Serezenith.3501

I want to outline a few of the problems that I can see with the Megaserver system from a roleplayer’s perspective. If I can, I’ll try and offer a possible solution or workaround for them as well. I can’t promise that the solution will be ideal, or even viable, but it’d at least improve on the current situation. These are just my personal thoughts, and I don’t speak for anyone but myself.

When I talk about ‘shards’, I’ll be referring to the map instances players are placed into by the Megaserver.

Shards are poorly designed to cater to factors such as home servers.

And I’ll try to explain why I think so.

As things are, during the small hours of the morning, the quiet, unpopulated shards fill with people from all servers who would not necessarily be grouped together preferentially, but have to be because there are not enough players online from their home servers to fill a map. That’s fine. That was the point of the Megaserver system. You are placed with people who play during your active hours.

But when peak time comes, some of these people are residually left over on maps, and are occupying shard spaces that could be filled by people from the primary native server. The result is parties and guilds being divided between their preferred shard and another, which is splitting people up and making roleplay (as well as other things) difficult to coordinate.

It was fine when people from other servers logged in to sit by a crafting station and do their thing in a quiet map, but they are being clumped together in major roleplaying hubs for hours on end. Roleplayers who come and go are not be able to meet with one another because the shard they want to join kept full by other players going about their game-related business.

I’m not saying that they have any less of a legitimate right to be in cities as the roleplayers, but it would be wise to find a way to split these groups of people up according to their interests and according to what they came to the city to do. That was supposed to be another key, defining feature of Megaservers. I don’t believe it has succeeded in what it set out to do.

Solution? I’m not really sure. Maybe something like this:

If you want to craft at the stations, surrounded by dozens of other crafters, join a ‘crafting’ shard. If you want to roleplay, join a ‘roleplay’ shard. Heck, there is nothing stopping you from joining a ‘roleplaying’ shard to listen in on some roleplay if you want, like how things were before this system came in. But right now, you have no way of choosing what you want to do or who you want to be grouped with, and that’s the annoying thing.

There is no way to find out which shard you or your friends are currently in.

This problem speaks for itself.

My suggestion is to assign shards with a naming system by which they can be identified. It doesn’t have to be complex. It can even be numerical. Shard01, Shard02, etc. The point is that we need a way to find out where our friends have been placed, and we need an easier way to join their shard that doesn’t require us to be in their guild or party.

Some roleplayers don’t want to join guilds, and don’t have people they can message to taxi them to the relevant shard. They cannot easily seek random roleplay with the system as it presently is.

Something similar to the LFG tool would be infinitely useful for this. I would suggest having this tool display native servers per shard by percentage to allow players to join the shard with the most people from their home server in it. If necessary, they could queue to join the one they want.

Roleplay in other languages.

Most people can identify Tarnished Coast for NA and Piken Square for EU as the primary English-speaking roleplaying servers, but did you know Jade Sea [FR] has a large roleplaying population, too? This is not something our NA players are likely to encounter, but every night since the Megaserver was implemented, we’ve had French and German roleplayers popping up in Piken Square roleplay hubs. I like meeting new people, but we don’t understand each other.

There are a variety of other minor gripes, but I think these are the most pressing ones at hand. If anyone wants to add to the list and suggest their own potential resolutions, or contend and debate mine, I invite them to do so.

It is an improvement, you are just focusing on your own side of story. I saw role players for the first time ever last evening on Southsun Cove. Never saw roleplaying there before on AR before the patch. Why is it wrong for me to experience this just because I wasn’t part of the original RP servers? And BTW, until recently TC was full.

So while you complain that you “can’t roleplay anymore” with friends, I saw plenty of opportunities ahead of me. I am not evil or anti TC/PS/RP for pointing this out. True story that made me smile, while many of you were cringing at the changes.

I suppose I don’t matter unless I am officially from your RP servers.

Although this wasn’t addressed to me, I’d like to respond to it nonetheless.

I’m thrilled that you’ve begun to encounter roleplay where once there was none. I love that people in your position are benefiting from this change, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Even if you’re not from one of the unofficial roleplay servers, you are still a roleplayer, and I for one consider all roleplayers part of the same community.

…But.

We’ve got no reliable way of connecting with one another, now. That’s why we want Anet to put in some sort of ‘RP flag’, so that no matter which server you’re from, roleplayers who flag themselves will have a better chance of being placed together on a map instance.

Don’t you see how that would be a far better solution for all roleplayers?

I think I’m beginning to understand the technical limitations, though I still resent the sacrifices made for the sake of this change. Having a plate chest piece and riding pants would have to be possible, for instance, and that wouldn’t work out very well. Hmm.

What about a system that let you effectively have a primary appearance, which would be your combat armour transmuted however you like, and a customisable town appearance consisting of statless ‘just for looks’ town clothing that you could mix and match and dye, and then set and apply in another menu? From there, you could then make it visible instead of your combat armour, but it would not mix with combat armour, and would have no stats of its own.

You could then have your in-battle customisation that’s much more visible when you’re dungeoning and WvWing and such, and it solves the issue of mixing town and combat armour.

It would be a considerable amount of work, and I appreciate that it may not be deemed worth it, but I’m… trying to come up with some reasonable solutions so that everyone’s happy.

(I’ve edited this four times already. Just realised what I’m describing is essentially the same as the current system, but with town clothing being visible even when combat stat armour is in use. Sorry. Not sure why that was so hard to describe.)

Serezenith.3501

Sorry about the mix-and-match. Converting things to be armor and combat compatible did come with some trade-offs. For the most part we tried to favor mixing with armor slots and skins (a lot more possible combinations). Hopefully we’ll see more consistently usable customization now that part of it isn’t hidden in town clothes that get turned off every fight. Outfits come as a set and equip as a set with the added benefit of not costing charges or requiring items to apply onto additional characters.

But we didn’t mind the fact that town clothing couldn’t be used in combat!

It’s no secret that you’re addressing mostly roleplayers in this thread. Town clothing is, as the name implies, used primarily in towns and defended settlements, and that is where most of the people who use it spend their time. They might wear their combat armour when they want to travel, or they could even hire guards to accompany them keep the beasts of the wild away.

I, for one, adore the fact that skins are now account-wide, reusable, and generally much easier to access, not to mention all the improvements made to the dye system.

But I don’t know if this is a trade-off I would have consented to if given the option.

The extra time to obtain additional skins, the inventory space required to house them, and the cost to buy dyes for every character would have been negligible to me at the side of roleplay customisation options, as that’s primarily what I play for.

Everything I work for on the PvP and PvE side of things contributes to things I want for my alts when I’m roleplaying, so you can probably understand why I and so many others feel slightly shunted by this.

@chemiclord,

Even if that were the case, why not make them ‘non-combat Outfits’ so that players can at least dye them?

Most town clothes are gem purchases, ergo monetary transactions, so the idea that town clothing owners are not ‘worth’ catering to doesn’t make sense from any angle. They’re paying customers. The customer isn’t always right, don’t get me wrong, but you generally don’t go to lengths to make your product worse if you want to sell more of the same kind of thing.

I don’t understand the reasoning behind town clothing being converted to tonics, nor why anyone would want to buy or use clothing they cannot dye or switch out individual pieces of. I understand that it would be a little strange to see people going into battle in their Sunday best, but I would prefer that infinitely to tonic clothing.

The idea of outfits being all-or-nothing is sad, too. At least we can dye those, but it’s still a poor deal at the side of the way things currently are.

I had been hoping those elusive, no-longer-obtainable town clothes would make a reappearance, complete and expanded. I remember reading that more town clothes were in the works as a matter of fact, and that we may one day see those lovely NPC sets. The charr and human NPC clothing in particular is highly desirable, and I for one would pay gems for it.

Why are we taking a step backwards? I don’t own any affected town clothing because I didn’t have chance to buy it, but even if I had, I wouldn’t want a refund or a tonic. I would want town clothing and ‘outfits’ to remain as they presently are.

That’s interesting, Mikhail.

My problem is that finding out which shades and which hair/beard styles don’t cause this weird mix-up is a guessing game, and an expensive one at that.

In these images, I’m using a Total Makeover Kit to compare the character’s current appearance under the effects of in-game lighting to the way the preview assumes he’s gonna look with the same appearance, but even when I toggle lighting on and off, it doesn’t take his too-dark hair into any account whatsoever.

Is it the hair that’s too sensitive to lighting, or the beard that ignores it altogether? Whatever the case, it makes blond norn men look kind of silly. Would be great if it could be fixed, and one (beard or hair) could conform to the other.
