@Legion: No one said they didn’t have pirate problems for 600 years. In fact, I believe it’s stated when pirates became a problem in Cantha in An Empire Divided – and yes, just checked, it does. Pirates became a problem in 872 AE, becoming known as the Crimson Skull and still an issue in 1072 AE (200 years later). Along with this, we have mention of pirates 100 years prior to that (merely a “300 years ago” via Kitah’s monument in Tahnnakai Temple). So prior to GW1, they had pirate problems for 300 years. If they were a naval powerhouse like you claim, I doubt they’d have such issues – especially with 2 of 3 Shing Jea Island ports being commandeered by said pirates in GW1.
Just because you are a naval power doesn’t mean you’re not going to have problems with pirates, I mean just look at England back in the day of sailing ships. Not to mention the Pirates wouldn’t keep coming back if you didn’t have anything of value, and the only reason they keep battling is because they haven’t won yet. Pirates are infinite, they will always exist and always keep growing in numbers, which is why I could see why they would keep attacking somewhere with lots of wealth. Yet Cantha keeps thwarting them, and for holding them at bay for so long they have had to pick up ways of dealing with them, I mean if there are that many pirates at there ports, they had to develop a way to get all of their trading vessels through them, and that doesn’t happen by going “Oh excuse me Mr. Pirate, we just need to get out across the sea with all of this merchandise so we can make more money to fight you here, you don’t mind letting us go right? Thank you so much sir.”
I wouldn’t say 2 weeks sailing – or “a few hundred miles” is “far from Tyria” per say.
I wouldn’t say it’s only a couple of weeks sailing considering the size of the globe, I mean it takes months just to walk across Tyria, and you can visually see how large it is in game, now put that in a world perspective.
He may have meant that he found the seed after finding his family, as in “It was then that he found the seed.” I don’t know the actual quote though just saying that’s probably how it was meant to be read. For it clearly states that he found it in a cave guarded by powerful plant creatures from the wiki.
“The seed which sprouted the Pale Tree was found in a cave containing many others like it, guarded by powerful plant creatures. Over 250 years ago, Ronan, a Shining Blade warrior, took one of these seeds and placed it on the graves of his family, who were killed by the mursaat. He and the centaur Ventari tended the young tree, and their attitudes and philosophy had significant influence on its nature. In particular, the marble tablet carved by Ventari prior to his death and placed at the base of the tree forms the basis for the Pale Tree’s philosophy.”
I don’t think anyone said anything about the cave being on Orr, but regardless of that, it was found in a guarded hidden cave, with many other seeds.

Or perhaps that it used to be, but what with them being pushed out of Cantha and trying to defend themselves they have gathered a larger area because of a larger population.
Yes, well I did say “or at least the fighting at the start” not trying to draw definitive lines, just stating plausible connections.
I do remember now that you mention it that it is supposed to be part of our calling I think , but I haven’t played my Sylvari really at all yet. I still stick with the rest of what I said though.

The Nightmare Court has nothing to do with the Dragon that shows up. They’re separate entities that just happen to show up at the same time.
Your(the PC’s) Wyld Hunt is to kill a dragon, and that is what that part of the Dream shows. The Nightmare Court did not summon or create the dragon.
Where I don’t believe that the Pale Tree is a champion, the whole plan of the Nightmare Court is to corrupt The Dream and give it pain, and torment and turn it into a Nightmare. So I’m fairly certain that is what caused the dragon in The Dream, or at least all the fighting right at the start.
If the corruption that the Nightmare Court is inflicting isn’t the cause of said dragon, the only other connection I could think of is that the say the 6th dragon is of nature, which would follow the trend in the dragons IF it is still alive or even awake who really knows. And like Zaithan is made of many undead, it is made of many plants and connected to all nature, it would make sense that it could have influence over the Sylvari.
Now I’m backing up what you said about the unlikely theory of the Pale Tree being a champion of an ED. But there are or HAVE been at least 6 Elder Dragons, and I think it’s fairly likely the 6th is of a nature quality. If I were to connect that and the Sylvari at ALL through what we’ve gathered, following this train of thought, because nothing is confirmed and this thread is about hypothesizing what could happen in the lore. It would be that the Pale Trees are this ED’s form of corruption.
Just follow my working through this. Remember it’s under the assumption that the 6th ED is alive and kicking, and that he/she is of the nature variety, AND the Sylvari are connected at all.
1. The EDs are extremely powerful animals that want to control the world and shape it to better fit them.
2. The EDs were stirring when the first seed was found in a cave, among many other seeds.
3. There IS an existence of another Pale Tree, so more seeds must have gotten out. Between then, where they were in a hidden hard to find spot, like all the other EDs were in, and now. So either someone else found it and is spreading them or…
4. The 6th dragon is awake and moving, and just as Kralkatorrik Branded Ascalon by flying over it, these seeds fell off/are from this other ED of nature. Where as it doesn’t seem a big deal now, the overgrowth of nature could be a real threat in the long run.

The Order of Whispers can get to Elona. If Joko is trading with Cantha, that means in principle the Order can get to Cantha as well, they’re just not saying anything about what’s going on there.
That said, there is another option you haven’t considered – another nation of humans somewhere that we as players don’t know about. Additionally, nothing in what you’ve said indicates anything more than that Cantha has (or had, although there’s no reason to think that’s changed) a strong trading fleet – it’s a big step to go from that to being a military naval superpower, especially in a time when historically a navy of ~100 ships was generally regarded as strong. Instead, in fact, the pirate activity around Cantha in GW1 suggests that at that time at least, Cantha wasn’t even able to keep pirates from its own shores, let alone ruling the waves.
Pirates go where there is gold to be had, hence why most went where the trading was good. I don’t think it’s that far of a jump to conclude that in 250 years, the nation with the largest trading fleet, which was constantly battling pirates at sea, would also develop a superior naval military. Unless the nation that was constantly trading, which means they were gaining information and other supplies in return, suddenly decided to not advance at all.
Now I’m not saying this means the DSD is at their shores, I mean I think the theory makes since, but I hope that in the expansions that the other nations have their own problems to deal with and that if the DSD is there, it’s not a main focus but a side boss or something. If anything, the only reason I don’t see Cantha controlling the seas is if they were hindered by something or someone trying to trap them and destroy them, say a pirate leading a large force who has found an ancient treasure at the bottom of the ocean and now controls a large power.
I agree with the fact that the physical appearances of the humans needs to be a bit more diverse, but my take on Divinity’s Reach was that it was diverse through the continent of Tyria, not the world of Tyria. I definitely assumed that there would be some ethnic diversity in Lions Arch, but with the flooding and being kept from the small amount of seafaring that Tyria did that it wouldn’t be much beyond trade and a bit of pilgrimage here and there. The Architecture in the game has on the other hand shown that some of the cultural structures have mixed .
I think we’ll see the return of the other ethnics when the game expands once again to the other continents, I’ll actually be surprised if they don’t stick to their guns, Arenanet at the very least seems to take pride in what they have created and want to expand and make it better, not to take out such major parts due to inconvenience.
Sylvari Elementalist- Victoria Hellbane
Human Necromance – Xpiher Duminous
Asura (male) Thief – Bippie the Unseen
Norn Guardian – Anton Stal (the Friar)
Char – I don’t know what name to pick, but he will be an engineer. Please help me create a name
The Sylvari one I don’t think fits, they go by Celtic names without last names normally.
Humans are mostly European names, or fantasy names, so I think that one will be fine, I mean it’s not like Tyria doesn’t know Elona and Cantha exist, so names from other cultures could be had.
The Asura name is perfect, they have a one to two syllable nonsense name, no last name unless there is a title, which is why it’s perfect.
The Norn have viking like names with their last name either the father’s or mother’s first name sometimes followed by “son” or “dottir”.
The Char have Romanesque names followed by their warband name, or a name that symbolizes them, probably picked out by their warband while getting raised. The name for my Charr engineer is Grimnar Geartooth.
You can see this if you just search through random NPCs or look at the members of the Destiny’s Edge. Charr – Rytlock Brimstone, Human – Logan Thackeray, Sylvari – Caithe, Asura – Zojja (or Zojja’s mentor Snaff), Norn – Eir Stegalkin.

Did anyone check to see if they left any hard to decipher messages? “So long and thanks for all the fish…”
If by “fish” you mean “death by the hundreds” then yes Mr. 42 man. (or woman I suppose.)

I would buy a Quaggan faster than they can rage if they went on sale.
