This resonates with me a lot to be honest. Friends always ask me “do I need to buy the expansion to be relevant in pvp?” My response to them is always that they’ll have a steep hill to climb with f2p builds. I feel like they would bring in SO many new players if they put some power into f2p specs or nerfed elite specs to be in line with them.
You probably want to tell us why you think WoW PvP is bad, because if you don’t it is gonna be very, very much a case of “well, I am fine with this”, then you come back and, dang, you hate the pants off it … because WoW PvP would be fine with me too.
To the specific questions: pvp is good right now, but QQ is high because this season the changed your rank (bronze, silver, gold, etc) from “wins move you up, nothing moves you down” to “reflects your actual skill, by way of MMR”.
Which means a bunch of people who were “legendary” rank are now … not. They are not happy about this. (The MMR system is approximately the same as what WoW uses, FWIW.)
Lots of people are having fun. Addition of top tier armor rewards to ranked pvp mean there are a lot of new players in it, which has the good and bad you would expect of that, but of course, that’s all down in the bottom of the MMR pool for the most part – just as it should be. Gonna mean an infusion of people who decide PvP is fun and stick around though.
Balance happens between seasons, four to six times a year, plus the occasional emergency fix. It’s fast enough that you don’t get change every week, but you do get it before things get too out of hand if someone works out a clever but unintended strategy.
All the classes are competitive right up until you get to the very tip-top of PvP, and even there it’s reasonably spread. Plenty of people will tell you that X is overpowered or underpowered or cheese, but the value of X is “anything”, and all the descriptors applied to all the classes. Which is a sign of generally good balance.
Also, people QQ about MMR being wrong but, as noted, this is because their skill rather than play time is being reflected in ranking for the first time. Actual gameplay is usually pretty good, and you get matchups that rapidly converge on competitive.
Thank you for the fantastic response! I really appreciate how detailed you were. You pretty much told me everything that I wanted to hear lol. Balance I feel could happen a bit more frequently when needed, but that honestly doesn’t sound too bad. I’m actually super hyped to come back and play the game now, and I’ll be redownloading it asap.
I like to start my mornings with a cup of coffee and excess amounts of salt lol. Nah if you’re around late tonight or tomorrow all day hop in TS and I can fill you in.
I’m under the weather right now so off work. If I’m not on tonight, I’ll be on tomorrow for sure.
My whole issue with WoW pvp right now deals heavily with improper tuning of damage numbers, and the removal of useful utility skills that allow you to assist/peel for your teammates and outplay your opponents. When I say “improper tuning”, I mean like numbers are actually insane and healers cannot keep up with damage at all. PvP feels like it is taking less and less skill to do well. I’m fine with bad players being able to hold their own, but if I’m good I want to be able to outplay people.
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 You just stare at these forums all day don’t you Nightpigeon?
Hey all! So due to some real life constraints, I had to regulate myself to only one mmo a while ago. I chose World of Warcraft because I loved playing my class in pvp there (I main restoration shaman). Recently the game’s pvp has taken a terrible direction. To be honest, it’s been on this path for a while. I just can’t tolerate it anymore however.
Because of this, I’m very much considering coming back to GW2 for some pvp. I’ve truly always loved the pvp system. My question to you guys is: how is pvp right now? Are you guys having fun? How (in)frequently do they balance? How are classes design-wise? I played during seasons 1 and 2 of HoT just as an fyi.
I appreciate any and all responses, but please for my sake be constructive. I don’t want to slog through a bunch of qq right now. If I could also get responses from any mid to high rated players that have a solid grasp of the game’s state right now, that would be excellent.
Thanks!
Nox
The recruitment message in the first post of this thread has been updated to reflect the current [RISE] and our specific needs.
With that said, let me just revive this thread by saying it’s been an honor to be a part of the [RISE] community thus far, and announce that we are now recruiting once again!
We are currently in the midst of our annual Summer of the Phoenix event, with the highlight being fun social events, scavenger hunt, in-game party and a legendary weapon giveaway (this year it’s the Bifrost)!
Hey all, I play necro currently. My build is basically standard carrion reaper. Here’s a link for quick reference of what I typically run around with: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vRAQNBmWD7kGRoyGszGwvGgeTsgLYUph2Q0K+K2FHjQXtAwCA-TphHwAAOCABOIACuAADeAAHLDEc/BA
I feel like this build lacks survivability at a level where you are likely to get focused but unlikely to receive team support. Does anyone have any tips/modifications that might help me deal with those types of situation more easily?
Took a break from gw2 for like 5 months and now I’ve forgotten how to pvp. Pls halp.
Congratulations to our newest members: Twisted, Deputy, and De. Welcome to the guild guys!
Name: The Phoenix Effect [RISE]
Server: Tarnished Coast
Website: http://thephoenixeffect.enjin.com/
Time Zone: GMT -4
Voice Communication: TS3
OUR CALLING: The Phoenix Effect [RISE] is a highly diverse PvX guild that prides itself on being open and inclusive toward people of all walks of life. We accept players in our community regardless of their race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status or anything else that may cause them to be a target of discrimination elsewhere. We have rules in place for protecting players from negativity and aim to provide a safe, friendly and highly social atmosphere for all of our members. We value respect for others above all else, and understand that this can be shown in many ways. Our main goal for the guild is to ensure that every member feels included and that there are very few social “barriers”. We want to encourage all members to engage with everyone in the guild, and to become an integral part of our close-knit community. We also want to ensure that members of [RISE] feel valued, appreciated and more than “just a number”.
OVERVIEW OF GAMEPLAY: Our guild is comprised of players who have interest in virtually every aspect of what Guild Wars 2 has to offer. To reflect this, our leadership team has been divided up into subteams to specialize in specific activities.
[RISE] strives to offer coverage for every aspect of the game, as we understand that guilds exist not only for community but for game progression and fun. However, we do not currently schedule or run WvW events and we have recently placed beginner level content on hold since an overwhelming majority of our roster consists of intermediate to advanced players. We are not currently accepting players who have just started playing GW2 for the first time or are still playing at a level that requires extra help and guidance since our current activities are largely endgame (or at least take place in lvl80 areas). Even though we are not currently accepting new players, we will still provide as much assistance as is necessary to players learning specific content or looking to master their builds and gameplay, all one needs to do is ask!
As a member of [RISE], you are encouraged to get involved with any and all activities and events that take place throughout the week. However, we certainly understand that every player has their own preferences when it comes to GW2. Our primary goal is that all of our members enjoy GW2 as much as possible, and we encourage you to tell us exactly how we can play a part in that.
[RISE] is currently striving to create a balance between casual and hardcore approaches to the game, and thus we aim to provide activities for both. We believe that casual and hardcore players can coexist in harmony as part of a single community like ours.
Casual activities include but are not limited to: Low to mid tier Fractals, dungeons that are not overly rushed, world boss farming parties, open world farming/event completion, occasional unranked PvP matches.
Hardcore activities include but are not limited to: High tier Fractals, Dungeon Speedruns, Raids, occasional ranked PvP matches.
OUR RAIDING CULTURE: [RISE] strives to do progression raiding without attitudes and negativity. We believe in a positive and somewhat relaxed raiding environment while still being able to consistently achieve boss kills and progression. We currently raid twice a week on Fridays and Saturdays (specifics can be found on our guild calendar). At this time we are interested in taking on more raiders who are interested in progression but are patient and light-hearted. There is a separate raiding application on our website used for team signups (that you would fill out after being accepted to the guild), but it’s short and rather painless to complete.
Aerveor is currently our main Raid Leader and oversees everything related to it including team signups. If you have any specific questions about [RISE] raids, feel free to hit him up!
EXPECTATIONS: [RISE] was originally founded as a guild where a member’s level of activity was not an overbearing concern and where everyone has the freedom to choose how often they participate or even how often they play the game. For the most part, this is still true. However, this IS a guild that strives for an active and social community though and we have changed our approach after over a year of trial and error. Here is a quick rundown of what we expect from our members in 2016 and beyond.
- Offline rules have remained largely the same as they were when the guild was formed, we still have a 60 day offline policy for folks who give no heads up that they’ll be offline. For those that do let us know with an official Leave of Absence message, the maximum time before we have to remove a member from the roster is extended to four months (120 days).
- During the course of their membership, all members are expected to participate often in the guild’s conversations, activities and our website/forums. There is no specific deadline or anything like that, we don’t expect people to be robots. But if we see that a member hasn’t participated in anything or even spoken to anyone while online for a long time (several weeks for example) we will reach out to that person to resolve this. [RISE] is a social community and we encourage social participation, so if you’re not really interested in engaging others in conversation regularly and don’t like to do guild events, this might not be the place for you.
- TeamSpeak is our voice communication and is used heavily in both guild activities and day-to-day chats and hangouts. It is required for Guild Missions and Raids. It is also required for other activities as deemed necessary by the organizers. We never expect nor pressure people to speak in TS as we are completely respectful of boundaries, but we do at least expect listening. It should also be noted that while it’s not a requirement, using TS even when guild activities are not happening is encouraged in order to get the most out of the [RISE] experience. We have a lot of really colorful and fun personalities in our guild and many of them use TS throughout the day. Applicants that enjoy using TS for socializing are preferred over those that do not.
THE PERKS:
- Close-knit community full of fun, friendly personalities
- Social events, including but not limited to Trivia Night, Costume Brawl and Parties, all with prizes!

Guild Rep Policy: Partial rep only! We don’t believe in silly 100% policies. We do expect that you consider us your primary guild, though, and represent us at least two-thirds of your total time in-game as well as remain active in our community in-game and on our forums. See the rules on our website for more details.
Other things of note: We are looking for players with a knack for leadership who love leading and helping others to fill our various officer and assistant positions. Don’t hesitate to let us know in your application if you are interested in possibly filling one of these positions!
Joining [RISE]: In order to join our community, please visit our website linked above and fill out our membership application. Our leadership team will review your application ASAP. If you have any questions before going forward with the application, feel free to contact any of the following leaders either via GW2 (mail or whisper) or via our website on Enjin. We would be happy to answer any questions!

Hey all! I’m trying to puzzle out a good look for my male sylvari elementalist. I’m planning on doing a full makeover and trying to find some cool-looking armor. Any suggestions for Sylvari hair, skin, pattern, and glow color schemes? How about some neat-looking light armor and dyes to go with it? Thanks!
Hey all! I’ve recently come back to Guild Wars 2. I am currently on the server Sanctum of Rall, but my guild, Ember Solace, is based in Tarnished Coast. I would very much like to do WvW with them, but TC seems to be perpetually full. I’ve stayed up pretty late over the last couple of days checking approximately every 30 minutes, but no such luck seeing an opening so far. Does anyone have any tips/know when the server tends to open up?
Thanks for your help!
Nox
I’ve found a guild to call home.
Hello! I’m a relatively new player just getting into the game. I’ve recently decided on a thief character based in the Sanctum of Rall world, and just started playing through the game. I’ve noticed that it can be hard to just make friends with random strangers you happen to fight with, so I’m hoping that a guild might provide me with an easier way to make some in-game friends.
I’m not sure if any guilds would be interested in recruiting a new player, but I’ve played a lot of MMOs and I’m a quick learner. I’m really just looking for a place to chat and/or play casually with some friendly people. PvP and WvW sounds like something I’d definitely want to get into at some point, but I’d like to get used to PvE and questing first. If you’d be okay with me joining your guild, let me know.
Shadow
