I don’t play because there is very little interesting PvE content, you just spam your auto attack and dodge the bad things. Also the main focus now seems to be on grinding (ascended gear, temporary meta achievements etc).
I highly recommend reading “Playing to Win” by David Sirlin, which is free to read on sirlin.net. You will probably get mad if you read this and you are not winning consistently against skilled players, ranked highly in solo queue or tPvP, etc. I sure as hell did. I had to realize that I was, in fact, objectively, without a shadow of a doubt a scrub.
If you would have read his book you would know that he argues that any game that is frequently updated or changed cannot be competitive.
“Anet isn’t competent enough with this game”
“Anet lied to us”
Arenanet is not a person, therefore these cannot be personal attacks. Maybe you should rename this policy since it seems to apply to more than just personal attacks?
I think it means the forum community has finally gone over the conspiracy-theory edge. Since we all believe the whole “Nexon controls ANet” thing, we won’t have to worry, because the world’s going to end soon too, right?
Not sure if serious..?
I’m aware they have 14.7% of shares. I didn’t realize 14.7% shares translated into Nexon growing waxed curly moustaches and plotting the demise of Guild Wars 2 and the world as we know it.
The article the OP posted is about NCsoft, not Nexon.

I like how fitting the flavor text is to ascended items.
“The courage to embark and the power to follow through.”
I will probably still log in for holiday events and to check out new content I think. But I don’t see myself spending much time besides that.
Oh come on, the Manifesto was pretty darn clear. And it’s not like they ever made an effort to correct any of the pre-purchase fans who expressed their delight in countless threads about not suffering through an end-game gear grind.
Nor did they drop by to reassure potential players who were interested in the game but worried about a lack of horizontal progression, even though those players were constantly told by fans that they should play something else instead.
If the Manifesto itself didn’t convict them, their silence did.
Jup.
Before release there were many people that said they weren’t interested in this game because cosmetic rewards was not enough for them. If Arenanet was going for a vertical progression system since the start, then they did a very bad job of marketing the game to that audience.
I’ve posted a few times in this thread, and this will be my last on this particular subject:
I didn’t come to GW2 because I thought there would be no grind. Grind and gear tiers don’t bother me. I’ve done it in WoW, Aion, Rift, any of the dozen or so games I’ve played the last few years. I came for other reasons, and for the most part I’m not disappointed. I’m still having fun.
However, what IS disappointing, is the lack of communication on this subject from Anet. Come to this discussion, Anet. Explain why you changed your gear philosophy. Explain why those who DID buy this game because of no gear treadmill should still play. Don’t send in the folks with their PR talking points. At least if you do PR, have it make sense (ie. we’re introducing a gear tier to address the gear gap that we are also now introducing…..what the?). That was rather insulting to a lot of us. Treat us as your partners, and we will help you grow and expand this wonderful game you’ve created.
Thank you.
Very good post.
I think most of us will understand if you just are straight with us. You have a business to run, and if you think that this is the way to go than so be it. But when you fail to explain these things in an honest manner the community’s response gets very negative.
0. I will in fact tell my friends that were still on the fence about this game not to buy it.
Ascended items, design philosophy that has turned out to be little more than PR, and double-speak “communication” only after massive outcry about all this.
“Thoughts on the patch notes?”
Arenanet’s word cannot be trusted.
I’d rather pay a monthly fee and get the Guild Wars 2 I thought I was going to be playing.
Amazing how money clouds vision and really stops a game fulfilling its true potential.

“And legendary weapons, of course, are not any more powerful than the top level exotic weapons.”
“These legendaries weapons are really cool looking, and like we said, you won’t get a gameplay advantage out of these things, you’re just going to look really cool.”
From July 12th 2012.
Several MMO news sites are now reporting on the backlash about these ascended items.
The people in this thread do not sound like they are about to ‘refer a friend’.
I just hope the executives wake up before this goes any farther.
PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward.
Problem is, PvP will be effected. No, not sPvP if that’s what you are saying….since it has it’s own seperate gear sets. The problem is Wv3!!
Can you honestly say that masses of players with BiS Ascended items along with a buffed legendary weapon that does more dmg than exotics will not effect Wv3 in a very very large way? This gear becomes mandatory to play. It will break Wv3 and make it a pure gear check which is not cool.
I feel for WvW players, now the gear grind has begun.
“LF1M for roaming group, must have current tier Ascended weapon with crazy overpowered proc.”
No.
I haven’t really posted here a lot since the game came out, I’ve just been been enjoying the game. But I have to say that this is very disappointing.
The fact that you will be able to gain more power from one specific dungeon, forcing every serious wvw player, and everyone else for that matter, into a pve treadmill. It just goes completely against what they said this game would be about.
Maybe post the information from the email here or on twitter? This is leading to a lot of confusion clearly.. And your post still doesn’t give us the time that the event will start.

It’s starting to feel like they are failing to capitalize on the hype around sPVP.
