I keep looking for this thread, I’m sure it must exist, where is it? Sure some people like them better as a pal-mance, but you have to admit that whole jealousy dialogue over her wanting to join the famous warband would have read romantic if they weren’t different species. And a Norn and a Charr, why not? They’re both large.

I was neutral on Taimi at first — not fond of precocious kids who like villains (I’m thinking of Dawn on ‘Buffy’ hero-worshipping vampires. Murderers aren’t cool, you stupid kid!) The voice acting made her much more likeable than I would have expected from reading the dialogue in the wiki, so congrats to Ms. Derryberry for doing hero’s work there. But the reveal of her disability really made me like her and think she was cool. (Her voice in that little dialogue was perfect.)

I think it’s because this motivates the whole Asuran persona more than anything else has. Of course she’s trying to control the world with her brain. How else can she get around? Of course she’s a little snotty and elitist — she knows her strengths (brilliance) and her weaknesses (physical dependence on others) and maybe she’s got a bit of something to prove. Her willingness to get attached to Braham despite him basically being a large monkey by her standards is kind of sweet, and tells me that she’s a kid, sorry, progeny, rather than an adult. Idolizing Scarlet is still sort of gross, murderers aren’t cool, you stupid kid, but I’m sure that’ll get sorted out as the story goes on. And yeah, several times I’ve just hung out and listened to her and Braham talk. That line he gives about having screwed up babysitting often doesn’t fit what it follows — I’m assuming it’s supposed to go with the dialogue about why she can’t walk? I’d love to hear Rox’s reaction.

WvW garnet sanctum chest is bugged

This happened to me today. I (a blue player) got the top half of the key in a red borderland, then followed another player through the Mistwrought Vault door and couldn’t open the chest. I then went and collected the bottom half of the key. At this point I had both top and bottom halves of key in my inventory. Went back into Mistrought Vault, couldn’t open the chest, didn’t get the achievement, still had top and bottom half of key in my inventory.

Would have liked to get the achievement since I made it through and all : /

I’d like to thank the Fort Aspenwood Major who let me finish the jumping puzzle in EBay borderlands just now. I wasn’t sure if you were suggesting a duel or a truce, but I’m glad you chose the way of peace. See you on the battlefield!

—I just realized it was Fort Aspenwood borderlands, which makes that an even politer gesture.

Thanks for the reply! So, the whole backline/strategy/actually using your utility skills/not just rushing in to die in AOE thing is basically only for organzied guild groups, you’re saying? Bah, I was afraid of that. : /

Thanks so much for the siege timer info! This has been driving me crazy but I was too embarrassed to ask! I’ll look for it next time I’m in.

Not sure I understand the wall-repairing answer, I’m asking about cases where the commanders have chosen not to defend, so no, that supply won’t be used instead for siege in the lord’s room or anywhere else. I guess you mean the people complaining about this aren’t talking about cases where a server has committed to constant flipping? I’m basically trying to make sure there’s no reason not to use the siege on maps where people have decided not to defend anything.

I play wvw a lot. I also play the rest of the game, but wvw is probably the thing I’ve been most excited about for a while now. So since I can’t claim to be a noob anymore, but I’m still pretty confused, I guess that means I’m just… a bad.

And I might be on your server. So how about some advice? I have some questions. Just off the top of my head:

1) PUSH! PUUUUUSH! Number one thing commanders berate their troops for (btw, commanders, please don’t berate your PUG troops? We’re just trying to help, we have other fun things we could be doing): not pushing on command. Well, I do. I stay right on that blue double-triangle. And often that means dying almost instantly. Then I read forum posts about light- and medium-armor wearers who hang back and work on trickery and picking off stragglers and “the backline” of squishier characters to good effect. Can… I be part of them? Maybe me dying soaks up a little AOE that would have gone to more valuable players, but I’m not convinced that’s the best use of my game-given talents. I also saw a reddit post recently saying it’s wrong to try to provide air support from a keep wall (using siege weapons or ranged skills) instead of following the commander on a sortie, even if melee isn’t your specialty. Really surprised me.

TL;DR: How does a “backline” coexist with “PUUUUSH!”?

Specific sub-case: charging into the mouth of a keep where you can see about 20 red circles lying in wait. You know you’re going to die, then you die. What’s the point? Are you supposed to be doing something different?

2) siege refresh/tick timers. I don’t get this at all. I’ve read that you only have to use the siege for a few seconds to refresh it, and I’ve read that the decay timers are visible. Yet, the only indicator I see on siege is a yellow horizontal bar like a health bar, and my using said siege has no effect on this bar, no matter how long I stay on or whether I fire the weapon. (I haven’t actually tried staying on for more than half a minute at a time since I read it was supposed to be seconds and come on, ain’t nobody got time for that!)

3) People keep posting that you shouldn’t waste supply on repairing walls. Maybe this is a server-specific thing? It seems to me that when your commanders have made it clear, usually verbally, that they don’t intend to defend a structure (more XP for flipping), why not use the supply? It’ll be your enemy’s in 30 seconds. Sure, it’ll be yours again in 5 minutes, but then it’ll be theirs again in 10, so… why not get the achieves? Obvs this is situational.

I’m sure this is a minority viewpoint, but I liked the random effects that engineer gets/got. I liked getting knocked on my butt by my own weapons, I liked that whole mad scientist steampunk unpredictable thing. And I liked having a million trait combos to choose from because no one really cares what I do because I’m just an engi. If your goal is to play the Best! In! Slot! Class! then you aren’t playing engi anyway, amirite? I think the wackiness of engineer is/was a lot of the appeal, and I hope you don’t forget that in the service of making it more…. serviceable.

Karma hoarding - wanted warning about change

Here’s what I don’t get. I read the latest notes about the rollback, so I got a banner booster and a food booster and started clicking. Numbers were lower than I expected, so I finally checked the wiki. It turns out right now, for example, a drip is giving me 102 karma and a double-boosted drip is giving 124. But the unboosted version would have been 150. So why did they roll this back if the new, unboosted karma was actually a better deal? Seems I wasted a lot of karma by waiting until we could use boosts again.

Oh, and Dulfy has great guides: http://dulfy.net/2012/05/02/3343/ Took me a while to warm up to her since the site froze my older browser, but she really has the goods on basically everything.

also, someone else has a great armor gallery here: http://www.gw2armorgallery.com/

I’d like to give a different perspective. If you’re not saving for a legendary, gold and karma aren’t very important. If you just play casually and follow whatever interests you, pausing to complete a map from time to time, and buying karma armor when you think it looks good, you’ll have more than enough gold and karma to keep yourself decently outfitted (plenty of good, cheap stuff on the Trading Post if you don’t find things to your liking out in the world). DEFINITELY waste gold on cosmetic items. That’s basically what the game’s about. Again, if you don’t have expensive higher goals, why not live in the now?

A couple tips. Selling things on the trading post: it’ll give you an estimated profit, and a fee — the fee is on top of the estimated profit, meaning, subtracted from. So subtract it from the suggested profit and if it’s lower than the vendor price, vendor it (or salvage.) Also, selling things in large stacks reportedly gets you a lower listing fee.

Unidentified dyes fetch a surprising amount of silver. Let’s say 80c for an ordinary dye and 18s for an unidentified ordinary dye. That’s a big difference. So open up all the dyes until you like how your character(s) look(s) and auction off the rest.

But yeah, I wasn’t trying to be particularly frugal and by the time I got two chars to 80 they both had enough karma to fully outfit in temple gear and plenty left over for my alts. So if you want to be a casual player, don’t even worry about money, that’s my advice.

Crafting: if you enjoy crafting, it’s particularly fun with the discovery mechanic. My problem has been that characters level up so quickly, you are usually high above the level you can craft for. If you really focused on crafting (I have a jeweller alt who got to level 400 in crafting before level 40 in game) it would be different — but even there, crafting gets you a ton of XP and you can end up pretty high-level but without accompanying skill points (my level-40 jeweler had no elite skill!) You need to have someone out in the world collecting materials for the various levels (not just ore and wood, but magic-y type things like scales and blood for the insignias etc.) if you don’t want to have to pay on the TP, and again, fast leveling can make that tough.

Guilds: even for a casual player, a guild is quite nice to have if you want to run dungeons. Otherwise, you run the risk of verbal abuse or getting kicked before the end so their guildies can get the rewards or similar annoying things. Luckily, a lot of guilds are very open and it doesn’t seem to be the high-commitment culture I’ve encountered elsewhere.

I find the over-exertions of the kitten filter quite funny. When people are just trying to have a serious conversation about the game and the filter puts together the ends and beginnings of words to find body parts and slurs where there were none, and I then “read” them in the process of decoding the original poster’s intention… well, basically this “profanity filter” is Anet swearing at me.

That’s pretty funny.
