Why I like HoT as a casual player

First of all, I should say that I’m very much a casual, solo player. I’m happy enough to lend a hand with world events, but dungeons, raids and the like aren’t for me. I don’t play for long stretches of time, just a couple of hours here and there.

Now, looking at a lot of the posts on this forum, I should be exactly the kind of player who loathes the expansion pack … but I don’t. It has issues, certainly. While challenge can be a good thing, there are some enemies who feel more cheap than challenging.

I do hope that we see some tweaks and balances as time progresses, but even the cheap enemies aren’t enough to stop me enjoying the game. I figured I’d make a thread covering why I’m personally happy with the expansion and for other people to say which bits of it they liked too.

First of all, I like the metroidvania kind of feel to the new maps when you first enter them. Initially they’re overwhelming and I tended to die a lot. Then you unlock your glider and navigation gets easier. You experiment with the elite builds and enemies become easier to handle. Bit by bit, you chip away at the jungle, uncovering new ways to navigate and fight.

On the subject of gliders, the ability to glide in central Tyria was a lovely surprise. I hadn’t kept up with the news much, so when my lvl 40 engineer suddenly popped open a glider I was delighted. It’s made leveling alts that bit more interesting.

I also enjoy the choice I now have. If I fancy a nice, easygoing bit of gameplay, I can spend some time in Central Tyria. Sometimes that’s all I want to do. However, if I want something more tricky, something that’s going to require some faster reflexes, I can head into the jungle.

Finally, I was impressed with how the jungle looks and feels, particularly when you first see one of the various dinosaur creatures. Admittedly, the mushrooms and some of the frogs can take a long walk off a short pier but otherwise I’m happy with the new enemies.

Again, I’m by no means a hardcore player. I’ve no doubt some of the better players out there can spot more problems than I. However, to be completely honest … a lot of the issues I’ve seen raised aren’t things that bother me personally. How about you? Anything about HoT that put a smile on your face?

I want Tengu as the next playable race!

I’d love to see Tengu as a playable race!

However … I do have one requirement. I’d want to be able to make a black feathered crow/raven looking Tengu. Not a fan of brightly coloured characters and pretty much exclusively dye armour in black, dark blue and grey.

NOOOOOOOOOOO I want the plague doctor elite spec for my engineer. :O
Like a new healer spec.

Not just me who thinks plague doctors are awesome then

Honestly, while I can understand your pain, I think the necromancer is more suited to the plague doctor (of course, I’m biased here as my main is a necromancer … well, reaper).

Perhaps an alchemist for the engineer? Maybe unlock a staff or a focus.

Is GW2 the best MMO?

As has been mentioned, the best MMO is entirely subjective. For me personally, yes it is the best MMO. It’s the one I’ve played the longest and the one I’ve had the most fun playing. I also like the fact that if I don’t fancy playing for a while, I don’t have a monthly subscription looming overhead.

I also enjoy The Secret World, but really feel that it would have been better as a purely single player game. GW2 manages to blend a compelling (in my opinion) solo experience with a generally friendly multiplayer experience.

Necro definitely need a support spec. Maybe Staff but with others skills.

How about Plague Doctor?

Focus on bouncing skills that apply conditions to enemies and buffs to allies. Utility skills could work similarly to an engineers elixirs.

Also you’d get one of those awesome bird-like masks

I like the idea but you gotta be able to dye them Or at least change the Bat wings and make them dyable.
I think I’d prefer a Branded glider first :P There are so many possibilities I’m surprised ANet hasn’t released many gliders yet.

I know what you mean. Let’s think for a second. Aside from wyvern, branded and dyable gliders (great suggestions) you could have:

Jetpacks
Fairy wings
Elemental wings (fire, water, earth, air)
Gaseous wings of basically any colour
A cloud of bats
April fool’s day T pose and SFX
Lovecraftian wings (think slimy, tentacled dragon wings)

Those are just off the top of my head and not necessarily in order of preference.

Isn't PvE supposed to be easy?

I’m very much a solo player, dungeons and the like never really appealed to me. Despite this, I like that HoT is tough. It means I have options. Central Tyria for more relaxed play and HoT if I fancy a challenge.

Still, if it’s not to your taste that’s fair enough. We play these games to have fun after all.
