OTHER stuff in POF or no?

Housing and some non-combat oriented stuff to do would take this game from a “C” (for me) to a B+ or A-, easily. I guess I’ll just wait and see, but so far POF isn’t thrilling me much.

Heh, tongue in cheek or not, at least it would BE SOMETHING to do other than grind the same PVE mechanics over and over.

Yeah, it’s about time they added some “ethnic” looking hair and faces. That’s the one thing I AM pleased about so far with POF.

Let’s be frank: it’s 2017. Most new or upgraded MMOs are starting to add “more” stuff to do than just button mash mindlessly on an endless PVE grind. It gets -boring-. Adding a bit of fluff here and there to do in between the mind-numbing grind wouldn’t be a terrible idea, TBH. But if they’re not going to do it, meh, I’m not going to bother buying the expansion. No skin off my teeth.

Are they EVER going to add more “life” skill stuff depth? Housing—fishing—gardening—etc? Stuff to do that -isn’t- directly related to PVE combat and endless jumping puzzles?

Just curious, because so far, I don’t see much in the new expansion that I don’t already have in a half dozen other MMOs I own.

So, new maps, mounts, and probably a ton more jumping puzzles to get to said maps?

No housing, no fishing, no gardening or more advanced “life skill” type stuff?

:/ Man, that’s a bummer. Don’t people get bored of the same old routine and want a bit more depth, or am I crazy? I dunno. Whole thing just sounds like more of the same “meh” to me.

I’m sorry – I didn’t realize having stuff to do beyond jump puzzles and heart quests and “dynamic” quests was archaic – in fact, most MMOs have these things, or some semblance of them. I did look over the patch notes last night, thanks – and it doesn’t seem like they’ve added much except gliders (meh), more jump puzzles/living world stuff (meh), more combat-oriented features (fine and all, but there’s nothing in this game to do beyond that), and more grind. I’ll go back to Rift or ESO for now. At least in Rift there’s fishing, housing, lore items, and some fluff stuff to do when I’m bored of questing/grinding. ESO less so, but I think they’ve got housing on the table for the near future, so there’s that – and lore books/little lore tidbits to find.

Read my question again- "The main turnoff of this game for me has always been the lack of “other stuff to do” – housing, fishing, collecting lore items or books, mounts, etc. " and " I’d check it out again if there was something else to do other than combat-oriented/leveling oriented stuff." So: Have they added anything to do that’s not leveling/combat/grinding oriented, like most MMOs do – or is it all still that?

The main turnoff of this game for me has always been the lack of “other stuff to do” – housing, fishing, collecting lore items or books, mounts, etc – there just doesn’t seem much to do outside level grinding, hand-held exploration, jump puzzles and end game gear grind.

Has that changed at all in the past 3-4 years, or are things pretty much still the same? I’d check it out again if there was something else to do other than combat-oriented/leveling oriented stuff.

Thanks!

Well I tried. It still hasn’t clicked. Mostly, I kept asking myself “Why would a necromancer be collecting rabbit food and picking flowers for some random NPC they haven’t even TALKED to about why this is happening?”

I think that’s a large part of the problem for me – the heart quests seem so random and have no story or lore to them. They’re just there. As are most of the events. WHY are these things happening? WHY am I being asked to collect rabbit food or chase off squirrels, etc? And why would my character be compelled to do such things?

So, at the end of the day, the game still feels remarkably shallow because of the immense lack of Lore beyond the living story and rather bland personal story, unless I want to sit all day on the Wiki. Which I don’t. I want to experience the lore in game, as my character. Couple that with the lack of RP-fluff-stuff to do, such as housing and books and even a viable emote list, and it just feels like an ARPG rather than a full fledged MMORPG to me.

Oh well.

I guess it is what it is, and this game just isn’t for me.

Housing has been “asked” for, but I’ll be honest….I find that level of RP in an MMO, unnecessary (at least for me) and I hope the Devs put their limited resources into something that everyone can potentially benefit from (like Guild Halls or some additional LVL 80 areas).

While readable books CAN relate lore well, it is considered an “old school” (translated…“bad”) method to do so in modern gaming (not that I agree with that). I’m quite aware of how EQ2 and WoW did the things you “like” and if you think they did those better than Skyrim…..not sure my opinions on these things will mesh with yours….at ALL.

Actually, I think you are misreading my reply. I never likened the book part of Skyrim to EQ2 or WoW or Rift – I was replying directly to the statement that it seemed I wanted a Skyrim MMO – hence my comment that I only thought Skyrim was “ok”. The book part of Skyrim was great, the housing was half-baked, though.

Now, I replied to the comment that MMOs can’t do readable books well – that was my comment about EQ2 having a good system for readable and writeable books. I wasn’t comparing it to Skyrim’s system of book Lore, but for an MMO it is pretty decent and book collecting is popular in that game. This is the first time I’ve EVER heard the opinion that book collecting or reading in game is considered too old school for new games. That, to me, makes no sense, considering many new MMOs that come out still have this and a lot of players seem to enjoy gleaning Lore from readable books in game. What’s the alternative? No Lore, or very shallow Lore that seems to play very little part in the MMO world itself?

Unfortunately that’s sort of the feeling I get from GW2, initially. It’s a pretty package, but seems pretty shallow in terms of “things to do” once you get past jumping puzzles, combat and guided “exploration”.

Again, either I’m missing something or the game just really isn’t for me, but…yeah, that’s the impression I get. I’d like to get a different one, hence my asking what I’m missing and if they are adding features like most MMOs have for “other things to do”. And no, I’m not a raider. I don’t have time, so don’t misunderstand me comparing “end game content”.

Now, on the subject of housing – again, this is more than just an RP consideration. Most MMOs have a housing option, actually, and many people (not just RPers) enjoy the achievement of getting or crafting “stuff” for their houses, either to show off, use as a utility hub for crafting, or yes…RPing. Rift has Dimension/housing, LOTRO has it, ESO will be adding housing apparently, FFXIV ARR has housing, FFXI has housing in some capacity, EQ2 has a robust system, Wildstar will have it, SWTOR has it (or is adding it very soon, as I understand) and even WoW is adding a form of housing, Archeage uses it as a major mechanic, EQN will almost certainly have it considering it is one of the most popular features of EQ2 and EQ:L… you get my point.

So, if done right, I think Anet could only PROFIT by adding housing. And more stuff to do to make the game feel less “shallow”. The pretty graphics are great, but…where’s the beef? Am I missing the beef? Or is the beef just not to my liking?

@Thaddeus – thanks for the offer, but if I do decide to find a guild and stick around, it will be with my spouse and very likely an RP guild. I do appreciate it, though.

Also – in all honesty, I found Skyrim only “ok”. But actually some MMOs do readable books quite well (EQ2 comes to mind, readable AND writable books). Even Rift and WoW have it to some extent, and it’s just a nice little added thing to do to help get into the Lore if you aren’t entirely familiar with it. Which I’m not, with the GW setting.

Edit: Are there any plans that Anet is going to bring this sort of thing (housing or lore books or the like) to the game at any point? It would probably go a long way with me enjoying the game more and wanting to stick around instead of feeling so empty about every time I log in.

I haven’t tried to find a guild yet, mainly because I typically try to “get into” a game before I try to find the right guild for me. Right now I only have an hour or three to play a day, as I have a 16 month old toddler and she keeps me pretty busy until she’s sleeping for the night or taking a nap. So my play time is pretty limited, which can be a barrier to finding and bonding with a guild, from my experience in other games. It’s a bummer but RL is definitely priority right now. Truth is, I’d be playing WoW but I want to save some money and I already own this game, so I’m trying to give it another shot.

I’m not new to MMOs of all styles. I have played FFXI (not quest based), WoW, EQ2, ESO, Rift, and a bunch of others. My “main” MMOs were FFXI for a few years, WoW on and off (and will probably go back to it again eventually) and EQ2 on and off over the years. I know how to play both quest based and non-quest based MMOs, so let’s get that out of the way. I like to explore in MMOs. I love to RP in MMOs. I like little things like readable books and housing (absent from this game, sadly) and deep, interesting and well written Lore. Pretty graphics are nice, but not the main thing I look for in a game.

Which brings me to this game. I’ve had it for a year now. I’ve tried a few times to get into it, and I just can’t. It looks pretty, there seems to be attention to detail, but … not much you can do with that detail, I guess. No readable books. The writing seems a bit juvenile or maybe badly translated? No housing. I am told WHERE to explore instead of just letting it happen organically. Dynamic events really don’t seem much more dynamic than repeatable daily quests, just …not daily quests and on a fast timer, rather than a daily timer. I haven’t tried PVP as PVP is only something I did at “end game” in WoW, but was never very interested in it otherwise in most games. The Lore seems a bit…generic? I guess. It doesn’t seem like there’s much thought to the culture or cultural differences to any of the races, beyond the surface aesthetics. Or, if there is, it doesn’t seem to translate very well via the NPC texts or generic “everyone wears the same thing” armor, everyone on the same side, everyone wandering around everyone else’s city without any hostility or comments even from the NPCs, etc.

What am I missing? I want to like the game, everyone else seems to like it, but it just feels “meh” to me. I don’t care about my character enough to want to RP him because the Lore just seems half-baked and generic, the lack of character customization in the character screen is kind of a killer for me too.

I just can’t seem to “get” this game, beyond the combat (definitely not my favorite style, but I can adapt to it if I could just get INTERESTED in the rest of the game enough to bother).

Any insight here? Anyone have the same problem? Anything that can help the game “click” or is it just not going to happen?

A lot of people really enjoy having that many options to tweak their character, mostly old school RPers and MMORPers and MUDers that want to feel attached to the avatar/character – if my character looks like every other character out there, I just find myself not giving much of a crap in general about the game, because I know that means most other things are likely to be cut and paste too. Turns out that most of the time that’s exactly what happens.

I just find it rather sad that instead of moving towards having -more- options (for character creation and other advancement options/gameplay features) MMOs seem to be moving -backwards-. How is it that older games, like COH (didn’t care for the game but can’t argue that the character creation was at all lacking) or EQ2 or even AION (though I didn’t care for the art style in general ) have -more- options for something as simple but fundamental as character creation in the past few years?

But seriously… WHY would any viking-esque woman wear a ton of makeup? Do you -really- think warrior women in history decked their faces out and slapped on some high-heel thigh high boots to go fight in? That’s all pop culture.

Except for where it’s not. I don’t recall seeing heavy armor having heels. They have flat soles, for the most part. Also, on the norn? That’s not makeup but . . . hey, I don’t want to get into explaining that.

Seriously, I don’t mean the woads. But those lips and lashes, c’mon dude… no woman looks like that without caking on a ton of makeup.

As for “it’s just how the market is” ? Well the market is rubbish, and has been for decades. People can be passive and say that all they want – I’m not a passive person and I speak out against things I think are garbage – and the way females are portrayed in this game (and in pop-culture in general) is garbage from top to bottom.

Any way you slice it, male or female, character creation is not a strong point in this game.

I said CHARACTER CREATION which meant males as well as females. There are some MMO’s that do character creation much, much better… GW2 is pretty lame in that aspect. Yeah, the male faces are pretty awful too and smack of bishy anime 12 year old pretty boys. Boring.

But seriously… WHY would any viking-esque woman wear a ton of makeup? Do you -really- think warrior women in history decked their faces out and slapped on some high-heel thigh high boots to go fight in? That’s all pop culture. And depending on the time period and culture, women may or MAY NOT have been showing skin. Victorian era, for example -you showed your ankles and that was risuqe’. Instead of doing anything remotely interesting with cultures or remotely taken from history save for the boring stereo types of the Nord (obviously viking influenced), we get pop-culture influenced underwear armor that would look more natural in a Victoria’s Secret magazine. Sorry, I find it stupid, uninspired, and utterly lacking in creativity. GW2 took the easy way out with character creation and armor design, and I don’t like it at all. Hard to be attached to my character when I can’t stand how any of the options for the races look. You may have a differing opinion and that’s fine – but I’m old school and I prefer armor to look like armor and warrior women not to look like little fashion models on a catwalk.

They could start calling the game Playboy Wars 2 then, I guess…

I vote NO. I’m sick of MMO’s looking like underwear shows and making women into the usual vapid sex objects. This game has plenty of trashy looking armor already. Coupled with the fact that most of the female faces look about 12 years old, it’s already entered into the realm of disturbing.

I’ve played plenty of MMO’s, and Guildwars 2 isn’t one of the better ones, in my opinion. It’s very limited, right from the character customization (of course all the female characters have to be showing massive amounts of skin and have pop-culture perfect features, except for 1 “ugly” face -) to “things you can really do” in this game.

Exploration really IS hindered by tons of invisible walls and instancing. Fast travel becomes a must because every zone is instanced. There’s no feeling of a journey at all.

No housing, crafting isn’t any more in depth than half of the other MMOs on the market (and a lot more shallow than some), very little fluff content beyond POI’s and Vistas – there were so many things they COULD have done with the engine and game mechanics but just didn’t do. Despite the game’s claim to get rid of grinding… that’s all the game is : a grind, and not even a very amusing one. The Lore in this game is bland and though I have RP’ed in many games, I can’t seem to get interested at all in the setting of this game to even bother. It feels very slapped together and the personal story is just boring.

I’m glad some people enjoy the game – but as a PP said: I’m playing it because I bought it and it’s B2P without a sub. To me, this game would NOT be worth 15 bucks a month. It’s filler as I wait for some word on FFXIV 2.0 or EQNext. I’d almost go back to EQ2 but the friends I had in that game moved on and without a solid guild it’s just not much fun – despite the fact it’s got waaaay more to do and see. Plus the graphics are definitely showing their age. Cataclysm ruined WoW for me, LOTRO never grabbed me despite really liking the Lore, FFXI got too dumbed down and the population has tanked over the past 10 years, SWTOR is just a money grab (though making fun of Darth Baras was sort of great), AOC, TSW, Star Trek Online, etc etc are pretty much garbage that I’ve no interest in. So here I am. Waiting, and forcing myself to play because I bought the stupid game.

Yes, yes, YMMV, but for every person that’s just utterly in love with GW2 and sings praises, there’s a person out there who is eye-rolling every time they log in and are only here because there’s a definite stalemate in the MMO genre atm.

1) There are tons of cool interior models in the cities but no guild or player housing? If EQ2, a game that’s 8 years old, can have a robust player housing system (that is very popular with players) than a newer MMO should add it. It’s just one more thing players can do in game besides grind the usual events or dungeons.

2) Work on the Lore and add more in-depth Lore. Also the personal stories are pretty lame and bland. It’s hard to feel immersed in a game when it’s all so generic. Even the races don’t feel very unique once you get out of their starter cities. Where’s the in depth culture for each one that carries on through the whole game and sets each race apart? Why are most of the books lying around something you can’t read and get some Lore from like in most other MMOs? Why are the NPCs so vague about what’s going on instead of explaining bits and pieces of the Lore instead of assuming the adventurer/player already knows or doesn’t care?

3) I’m sorry, but classes also feel pretty generic, considering that you only get a very limited number of skills and skill points to use…and each class ends up getting basically the same skills with a different animation and name.

4) More emotes. I can’t believe there’s not a /nod emote, for instance. Why can’t we sit in chairs, etc etc?

5) Fix the bugs. Events and jumping puzzles specifically, from what I’ve seen.

6) Get rid of the invisible walls and instancing! You spent all this time creating a huge landscape with lots of detail… and half of it is blocked by invisible walls and the other half is instanced. It feels very disconnected. There’s no sense of a journey because of this.

7) I know it’s been hashed out before, but mounts of SOME kind would be cool and add to immersion. They wouldn’t even have to give much of a speed buff… it would just be something fun to have.

8) Improve NPC AI. Seriously, I HATE seeing NPCs standing in the same place doing the same 3 emotes over and over, day after day, year after year. It makes the cities feel like paper cutouts instead of real, living cities.

9) Fix buggy pets. Their AI is awful.

10) More TYPES of content. Why not a political system of some kind? Why not pay attention to crafting and make it viable and more fun? Why not some alternate advancement options to work towards that take a lot longer to do?

also I have to add:

11: Make leveling down OPTIONAL. Sorry, it feels pointless to level if you never really feel much more powerful/unique. It’s great to have the option to level down but forcing it in every zone is just tedious.
