I am happy to see that there are others of the same opinion as me. Guild Wars is a game which is no doubt fun to play, however there are faults as well, the lack of user friendliness for consumable items is one big example of this. As Kal Spiro said, I can only hope that the management will take notice of this discussion and see the potential in item shortcuts / hotkeys.

I dare not claim to know how far the potential of hotkeys / item shortcuts can go, I started this thread with combat variations in mind, but I have been reminded of other items such as; Mini game items like the transformation costumes, Food/Utilities, Boosters, Tonic/Guild Banners.

There was also concepts like a Quick Weapon Switch giving the player a whole new set of potential combat styles, for example a ranger (my main class) might start off with a longbow, attacking with long range shot, rapid fire and barrage before switching to the great sword, using swoop to make up the distance and following up with a mule, hilt bash. Swapping to a sword and dagger one could quickly apply conditions with serpent’s strike, stalkers strike, followed by hornet sting and a crippling talon before returning to a longbow for a point blank shot. Repeating such a combination.

While admittedly this would be impossible with the current games set up, it would certainly be fun to try. I’m sure that many of you could also come with with other clever combinations as well.

However as stated before, such talk is for naught if the developers fail to see the potential, as such other than making this thread as popular as possible, we can only hope for the future.

Indeed, as cyn.2157 said, I have tried the idea of setting my bag to the side so that I could pull items out as I need. While it works, its not without faults. The main fault being small AoE attacks, such as mines, as well as situations when fighting more than one enemy.
It is often the case that I am fighting a higher ranking enemy in front of me, be it an elite, champion or a boss, when I have been ambushed to the side from an enemy who was hiding under my inventory. There have been other times where I have rolled to avoid one attack, right into the zone of another… its a little annoying to say the least.

On a side note I frequently check this post so if any of you have ideas on how to make the consumable items viable in the current guild wars please put them here. Unless there is a blaring fault with them I promise to check it out.

While I can understand what you mean with the summonable pets not being as useful as players in a level 80 area, its not exactly the reason I would desire a quick bar/ action bar. If its something like a sharpening stone, which last last for enough time to clear a dungeon, then one could simply activate it at the start of the dungeon and then not bother with it. Same goes for pets.

What I am looking for however is a bar for items such as ‘Ball of Gunk’ a skill item that grants the player a ball of gunk to throw at a target area. It then applies random conditions within that target area for a period of time. This level 22 vender item can be said to be equal to a mesmer casting ‘Chaos Storm’ without the chance of boons.

Can you really say that in a level 80 area, this cheap item what gives you a number 5 skill move, with no cool down, is pointless?

Indeed, I have played many online games in the past and can say that the quick bar concept works well.
Quick bars and shortcuts are something many games implement, be it single player games like Skyrim and Fallout or multiplayer games like runescape, world of warcraft and is a function that most, if not all players use, it can be said that a quick bar is something that enhances gameplay.
While I understand that some players might not like it because its not great for roleplaying when an items appears in your hand, I think the vast majority of players would prefer to have a helpful gimmick such as a action or Quick bar to aid them in both traveling around the maps as well as in dungeons and personal stories.

To be perfectly honest when I first started playing guild wars I struggled a bit due to the fact that I was so used to having a quick bar from the other games I played.

Hello,
On the character I have been leveling of late I decided to use some of the items you can buy from vendors around the different maps, the consumable items which let you either use attack skills similar to other classes or boons. While some of these items can be considered useless 90% of the time, such as click to equip a Wooden Leg to which you earn yourself a branch to hit people with, others such as the Molachev kittentail, Air-Strike Grenade, Rock, Ogre Pet Whistle, Fire Elemental Powder and many others can play a large part in creating variations in our attacks, permitting more tactical and entertaining gameplay.

However there is a problem, the items themselves are not very user friendly, of cause by this I am not referring to the skills they provide you with, but instead the steps that you need to follow to access the skills they provide you with.
More than once I have ran into a wondering field boss, be it a champion or elite and decided to have a go at it, on my old characters this didn’t pose any issues due to the fact that I never bothered with the consumable items like the ones I mentioned above, however now that I have started using them their main weakness becomes obvious, the fact that you need to open your bag, find the item, double click on it, and then and only then can you use it to attack the boss.
Correct me if I am wrong but I assume that many of you like me like to have your bag stretched out so you can see all the slots without scrolling down, it is however because of this that I have died so many times trying to get out the items, I simply can not see the enemy nor any AoE attack markings.

What I would like to see in the game is the ability to add the ability to either key binding the items, using either the num lock number pad or the f6-f12 keys which aren’t used by any profession.
Or maybe give the player the ability to add a new action bar to the screen to which we can place these consumables in and use from the bar. Instead of Open bag, Double Click, Close Bag and Use Skill. It could be as simple as Click on skill, Use Skill.

Tell me what do you all think of this, I believe it would be a fun way to add a whole new range of abilities to a character’s skill set.
