Optimization for TCP/IP Settings?

No, please don’t turn this into a “the last patch screwed me over!” thread. This is recurring, has nothing to do with Teq, and I am merely looking for a way to optimize my computer’s settings for GW2.

Thank you for the post but I’d feel much safer purchasing online than in a store like best buy and what not.. bad experiences there and the prices are insane. I’ve asked elsewhere and had people give me reassuring answers on power supply with what other parts I linked but.. now you have me worried.

I wasn’t referring to Best Buy, but there are many stores that specialize in computers (like Microcenter that I described above. That specific store is in only a handful of states though), rather than specializing in general electronics. 50% of their store is build-your-own-PC stuff, 30% PC accessories (cabling, etc), 10% software, 10% TVs/monitors. The people at these types of stores are generally much more knowledgeable than Best Buy. I would never suggest going to Best Buy or its ilk for building your own PC. Geek Squad may sometimes know their stuff, but it’s too easy for just anyone to get a job there as long as they can identify the USB symbol.

I didn’t mean to worry you, and I wasn’t saying using the power supply you have now would damage your computer. What I meant was if you try to draw more power than it can provide, usually by throwing in lots of other add-ons (wireless adapter, extra sound card, SLI video cards, etc), the power supply unit can eventually malfunction. If this happens, THEN it can damage your components, and you’re out even more money than just a new PSU. I suggested the 750W only so you would have plenty of room for these other types of hardware in the future.

EDIT: I stressed the power supply situation only because it’s happened to me before, and was quite costly.

No, it’s been somewhat regular for a long time, esp during peak hours. I wonder if my ISP is just somehow getting overloaded or something? IDK how it all works, networking has always been my weak point. What does Apple have to do with it?

You can go with a pretty cheap tower, but bear in mind – higher end ones can be designed for a more fluid airflow, preventing malfunctions and/or damage to hardware. Your GTX 650 Ti will do great. I run GW2 on Best Appearance with no problems with kitten Ti. The 520W might be a little low. A higher end one, 750W, power supply is better, as having a defective power supply can physically damage your hardware.

So we’re gonna say our tower is $40. You can find a decent processor for about $100, throw in a $75 mobo (ask the sales associate which combos would go together). They should come with pretty nifty heat sinks. Next up is memory, 8GB at the very least for future games. I found 4 GB DDR3 chips for $30 each at Microcenter (www.microcenter.com – they should ship). Throw in a $20 DVD-ROM drive to install Windows (which would be another $100). A 1TB HDD would run about $50.

Tower: $40
Mobo: $75
CPU: $100
RAM: $60
HDD: $50
DVD: $20
Win: $100

Total: $445

Make sure you have a salesperson with you making sure everything will be compatible.

Someone in-game said something about opening up a port, but I didn’t really understand it. Could someone clarify this, or was that garbage info?

I’ve been lagging out really badly, and no, I’m not blaming the servers. It seems to happen to this extent only with GW2 though. Speedtest.net shows me as over 26 Mbps (bit, not byte) D/L. I’ve got the best cable ISP offered in the Denver area (supposedly).

It’s to the point where I’ll attack 3 or 4 times, then everyone will be just standing there or running on their previous trajectory for 5-15 seconds before letting me get another few shots in. Or I’ll stand there for a bit, then be downed, rally, and be downed again in a matter of a second or two. It’s not just in populated areas, either.

I know that some ISPs throttle your connection when they detect certain things from P2P software, and I read once that occasionally an ISP can confuse a game with P2P software. What can I do, if anything, to optimally configure my TCP/IP settings for GW2?

8GB DDR3 Corsair RAM
NVidia 550 Ti 1GB DDR5

I’m not posting RE: Teq Patch. This has been going on longer than that, and I’m looking only for info about optimizing computer/firewall/router settings.

MF Specifics?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Reading through sites on google, including the official wiki, I’m finding that MF increases quality of a specific drop. However, my guildies and guild leader insist that it was patched a while ago to affect only drop frequency, not quality. Which is correct? Tried searching for Magic Find on forums and got over 3k results I really didn’t want to sort through.

cool, i didn’t know they’d already implemented it.. thx for the info

EDIT: so basically, the official reply is “it would be irresponsible to do this” for the ones that are still up there.

They need to make it so that custom offers that are impossible to fill cannot be posted on the Trade Post.

Example 1: Someone posting a custom offer for something below merchant/vendor value. As a seller it is impossible to fill this order, as the Trade Post says in big red letters “Unit price must be higher than vendor value.”

Example 2: Posting a custom offer of 1 copper. The Trade Post doesn’t allow you to make zero profit – i.e. when the listing fee is the same as the selling price. Therefore, it is impossible to fill a custom offer of 1c for any item.

It would be great if Anet would prevent this garbage from ever reaching the TP.

WvW Mapping

WvW mapping is ridiculous. In order to complete the map, your team has to be doing well that you own the areas with the Points of Interest and the vistas? That doesn’t make any sense for a personal achievement. This is totally maddening; I just have to hope that one day our server will happen to take over the point I need?

Same thing’s happened to me, twice. The first time, a bunch of people said it happened to them, but then the other day, after completing them a second time, they reset for me AGAIN. So now I’m working on my 3rd repetition of the September monthly achievements.
