Bouncing ideas back and forth and was wondering if these ideas might work, or if I am seriously killing my damage output. I am terrible at math, so I was hoping someone might be able to help. I know I know ‘check out the other threads’… which i have, but i couldn’t find the answers i was looking for. I am used to running a burst/sniper D/D build, but I got bored of it and like the idea of s/d with all the dodges and evades. I don’t want to hit like a wet noodle tho, which is kinda what i had been doing once i switched builds. After some thoughts and tinkering i have a few ideas i’d like to bounce around and hopefully yall seasoned vets and mathmaticians can help me out? The idea behind the build (which I lay no claim to, or think is original or anything) is taking advantage of might and fury to buff my damage output, while increasing survivability with dodges. I am using might on dodge with feline grace, and the nourishment that gives might on dodge and 40% endurance refill to stack some might to make up for lack of power that i’m so used to with d/d. I was wanting to go 5 deep into SA so that i could get 2 stacks of might from stealth too, but felt like i couldn’t take away from anywhere else to make it worth it. The fury i will gain from Thrill of the Crime, Furious Retaliation and Runes of Rage. So the dilema I am having is this: do I aim for really high crit % and ferocity and not worry as much about power? The reason i went with runes of rage was for the 20% added fury uptime, ferocity and damage. Should I be looking at using runes of strength instead, for the might stacking? Pack runes for the power, precision, fury and swiftness? And then there are sigils… i like fire and air for the added burst potential, and a high crit rate will help proc them, but what about say….. sigil of strength for added might every couple seconds? Sigil of Cruelty for added ferocity?
Any thoughts, helpful tidbits?
Oh and here is my current build….

I use Sigil of Ice on my S/P build and it works out very well — most of the time.

That’s a neat idea too! And even not just for Pistol Whip its still nice to slow your opponent down

Possibly mesmer runes to get another 33% from daze. This may be just enough to get in the final hit unless they dodge. The duration will not be long enough, but they can only move so fast…

I’m wondering if by the time I do runes and sigils if I’ll be making the rest of myself weaker and putting too much stock into pistol whip? Not sure…. either way you’re giving me something to think about, so thank you for your advice!

30% more stun is but .15s more. This is barely anything and not enough to get that final hit in.

Extra things you can do to ensure the full dmg are (more examples can be created, i’m just quickly saying what I can remember): Use chill before (sigil of hydromancy, stolen ele’s skill), have a long enough immob through devourer’s (own or shared use), having someone CC him during the whipping or double S/P him (with a pal).

Pushing the enemy to a corner and having their dodges been used up also works since they have to walk through you which usually ends with all the dmg hitting. Attacking ppl with endurance in general is able to get you a lot damage through. Cause ppl tend to back away from a pw when recovered from stun. If you place yourself close enough to them, all swings will connect before they are out of sword range. More experience people will know how to walk out of it but chaos of the battle works well in a thief’s advantage.

Great advice, I really appreciate it. I’m not good enough to push enemies to corners yet tho lol I’ll work on some of those ideas and see what I get haha Thanks so much for your help!

Few things on the build you posted.

1. If you’re running full zerker and find yourself running more than fighting, its probably one of your top issues. Full zerker on a thief leaves little room for error, and being a “noob” as you say makes learning the play style much more difficult. Mix in some valkryie gear, you will maintain the crit damage (or ferocity) and power, with a small loss in precision but a nice bump in vitality. I’d throw in a chest and leg piece for valk or an amulet and rings or earrings, not too much to where you lose any hope of critical hits but enough where you see some bonus to vitality. Another alternative would be swapping one of your traits in critical strikes to practiced tolerance to turn some of that precision into vitality which in your case, is a lot (126 vitality or 1260 health).

2. No rune selected, no sigils and no sb. Rune/sigils is probably just a little mistake, I’m sure you’re not actually running without those but it would help to know as far as giving you a suggestion on which to choose. However the sb is a good helper especially if you like poking at zergs without being on the frontline. The aa and the poison field work great but you have to be aware of 2 very important things; where the enemy train is heading and where the enemy backline is. If you have good awareness of your surroundings then you’re in good shape.

3. No foods, no oils/stones. Since you wvw, you have to get into the habit of having these. I personally hate being put on an arms race with it but it does make a big difference. There are a ton of foods to choose from, and some could work really well in your case such as orrian truffle meat stew (passive endurance regen + might on dodge), or carrot soufflé (power on kill, critical damage). Again this could just me a slight error and you haven’t posted it, but idk. If you go into pvp to hone your skills in there is no foods so probably best to try it there with less factors to take into account.

Outside of that it’s just learning a rotation to fire off your skills without spamming them because that leads to easy to counter behavior which is one of the lovely aspects of thief, little room for mistakes especially on a stealth-less build.

Thanks for the response!
I agree, I shouldn’t be running full zerk, especially since I am still making so many errors. Valk only loses out on precision, I see what you’re saying…. gain some vitality and lose a lil precision. I think that would be a fair trade, let me take a few extra hits before getting toasted haha.
I guess I forgot to select the shortbow, my bad lol. But as far as runes and sigils go- I don’t have any at the moment. Ive been buying exotics as I earn the gold, and haven’t earned enough to buy runes yet. I’m not even 100% sure what runes I want to use to be honest. Was thinking about scholor or strength, but I am not very good at doing the calculations so it just becomes guess work for me. And the sigils I was thinking about Air and Fire, only because I’ve seen other people talking about how it works well with bursts. I don’t even know how much damage a lightning strike does tho lol

thank you for your input, I like to get as much info as I can so I can make my own build and playstyle that works for me

Well the main reason why the stun doesn’t last that long is to give the person a chance at getting out of the way of it. Otherwise that would be op to just spam and make them waste all of their stun breaks…

That makes a lot of sense So I’m wondering if that extra 30% stun duration would make it last long enough to get that final thrust in… hmmm…. I think i’ll just try it out in game and see what happens lol. Thank you for replying to me

Pvp for sure. If you can survive and land kills there, you can do it anywhere.

Most of what makes a good thief is really two things, being able to read telegraphs from your opponents, and dodging. If you can avoid the damage, you prolong your death.

This is why a lot of the top top players still run d/d, for death blossom. It’s an extra dodge versus a hammer warrior ect.

Secondly, knowing what you can and can’t do with your initiative. Being able to know how much you’ve used without looking,

These two things, will set you on the right path.

Sweet! Thank you for the tips I guess it wouldn’t hurt to roll some different classes into pvp myself and see their mechanics, since i’m not sure what animations other classes make while they are attacking- so I don’t know what to look for to dodge lol

I’m definitely not a pro but sounds like the style of play I’m trying to go for too. I compliment you on not using a stealth build. I’ve purposely tried to not use stealth myself.

I’ve been messing around with builds and I tried a signet build. And I found that I died a lot too. The healing signet sounds good but it really doesn’t heal for that much and that long cast time is horrible – it got me killed more times than I can count.

I switched to Withdraw as the healing skill and added Roll for Initiative. So much better. Especially in the duck in and out play.

I also didn’t like pistol whip. I can’t stand that it roots me. But that may be just my own issue.

I’m just in the beginning stages of the signet build really… only fought a couple times like that… never 1v1, always in a group setting. The might sure did help me tho. You’re right about the cast time for the heal. I use to run with Withdraw and Roll for initiative too- it was two more stun breaks, and evades, and heal and initiative- I really liked it. Only reason I ditched em was to try this signet build. Pistol whip is something I believe takes practice- as long as u manage to get a tiny stun in there first (either from steal, or the #2 skill, or basilisk venom- then you’ve got a much better chance of not just standing there swinging into the air haha.
Lemme know if u find something that works well with you, maybe its something I haven’t tried yet I appreciate your feedback, thank you!

Just trying to figure out ways of improving my damage (aren’t most of us lol)
I am currently using S/P and it seems the biggest dealer of damage is Pistol Whip. One of the problems I am finding is that the stun duration is for 1/2 second which doesn’t seem to be enough time to deal the final sword thrust that has the most damage… is that right?
I was wondering what your thoughts were about using a superior sigil of peralyzation (however its spelled lol). Giving 30% more stun duration and hopefully landing that last hit?
Or is it a waste to use that sigil, and better to use fire or air or force etc? Was thinking of using something like a sigil of force for the pistol and paralization for the sword?
I haven’t found any other post about this or I wouldn’t be wasting yall’s time with something as silly as this
Thanks for any help I can get (I need it bad haha)

Makes sense. I suppose the two would be different play styles, since it wouldn’t be as ‘assassin’ like, more 1v1 or group fighting, but I guess a lot of what I need is just plain practice fighting. I’ve been trying to learn off of other videos, but implementing what I learn is a whole other ball game haha.
I’m really concerned about going into PvP because I will be zero help to the team I am on and i’ll just end up making enemies, not friends haha

Stryker.1863

Hey yall, I’ve been playing as a thief for about 2 months now (so still a noob). I’ve been reading a ton of forum posts, watching as many youtube vids as I can, fiddling around with different builds, weapon sets, etc. I’ve been spending my time in WvW and I like the idea of a thief roaming in small groups, or along the edges of zergs jumping in, dealing damage, retreating, stomping downed players, basically playing clean up, or assassin (but of course, being a roamer I will end up in outnumbered fights) . Here is where my problem comes in- I SUCK!! lol. I need sooo much more practice, but in WvW I run and run, find some action, get killed, and run some more lol. I don’t get to spend much time in actual combat.

I’m not really sure what i’m hoping for with this thread, but I guess my main question is: is there a better way to get more fights in? I understand I can do PvP which will be more action- but will it still be helpful to me, since i’m wanting to play the ‘cleanup assasin’ role in WvW?
Or- is there anyone out there that would take pity on a crappy thief and try to mentor them into being a not so crappy thief? lol

Right now I prefer S/P for the gap close/retreat and the black powder for a clean stomp.
I am low on gold, and haven’t bought any sigils or runes yet(any suggestions welcome here as well), but here is my current build if it helps- I thought maybe ‘might stacking’ with the sigils would help make up some of the crit nerf?

Thanks for takin the time to read this novel, any help is appreciated as I am almost at wits end with my goal of thief roamer in WvW lol

Stryker have you talked to any of the guilds on Devonas Rest?
BRL, RED, HAVC, GVNC, HOD, ZERG, DTGA, VOX, COC

All have dedicated players with considerable experience in game and a dedication to the server.

No I haven’t I didn’t know how I could go about doing that unless I just randomly approach one of them in game? Wasn’t sure what the appropriate way of going about it was.

Hiya, Stryker, and welcome to the community! This is definitely the right place to put this, and I can definitely understand not being super-active. Sometimes other stuff just comes up (especially when there are diapers involved, lol). I know you’re on Devona’s Rest, but if you don’t mind guesting to Tarnished Coast, I think my guild, Ember Solace, would be a good fit for you. We’re designed with new people and busy people (and busy, new people xD ) in mind. We’ve got lots of people who are new to the game, and a few veteran players who love showing people the ropes. If you’d like to read some info on what we’re all about, you can check out our recruitment post and our forums (there’s a brief application to weed out the trolls and such). Anyway, I think you’d be a great addition to the guild, and I hope we hear from you soon. ^^ And Merry Christmas to you, too!

Deffinately interested, especially since I haven’t got to experience the ‘guild’ part of guild wars 2 lol I know to click ‘guest’ when changing worlds, but how does that work? I assume I only have a certain amount of time etc? Would this be to see what you’re all about with the hopes that I will switch servers? (Sorry this is all new lol)

Hi, I’m pretty new around here (Level 38 Ranger) and I’m on the Devona’s Rest server. I don’t know if this is the right place to post this or not, so if I’m wrong please point me in the right direction, thanks.

I’m looking for a guild that is cool with someone who isn’t a super active player- by that I mean I am not on a whole lot and sometimes might have to log off in the middle of things. I have an active home life and I try to only get on at night, which will reduce the frequency of logging off, since I won’t be changing diapers, or other fun stuff. I’m just looking to make this experience more fun, and to grab some loot and exp and try to support some other players that actually know what is going on haha. I am very nooby, so be prepared haha.

I know that this does not scream “PICK ME PICK ME” but if there are any charity cases out there lemme know. lol.
Thanks and happy gaming! (and Merry Christmas too)

Thank you very much, both of your input has helped me. Upgrading weapons and armor with runes and sigils is something most beneficial at level 80, correct?

I’ve been salvaging everything I can’t use thusfar, and have 23% magic find, along with a bunch of random runes. Should I be trying to keep these runes in the bank for level 80? I don’t know how rare or hard to find/make runes is.
My bank and inventory is already hard to manage and keep small so I have to get rid of things that aren’t that important, but don’t know what is worth it and what isn’t. I have many minor runes and sigils and have been thinking of just tossing them on the items I currently use, or selling them, but would hate to regret doing that if I should wait until 80.

As far as crafting goes- I am currently trying to do jewelry and huntsman. I don’t have a problem switching anything since I’m not even level 20 on either of them. My question is this: Lets take jewelry for example- I am to craft silver filigrees for certain recipes I have unlocked, but am currently only able to craft copper junk. Do other components and refinement options open up automatically as my crafting level increases? Do I just keep crafting copper junk until I level high enough?

I feel like I'm missing alot- any pointers?

I’ve been playing long enough to get to level 33 as a Norn Ranger. I have basic understanding of the battle structure, of the special attacks and attributes from 1-9. What I am having the most issue with is learning how to make my weapons and armor better, figuring out which items to salvage and if its worth upgrading any weapons with runes because by the time I upgrade it I am leveled up to where I find a new better weapon and have lost that rune on a weaker one. I also don’t understand the crafting aspect- is it worth leveling it all up and which ones should I focus on? I don’t find a whole lot of time to play, as I am married with a 2 year old- is PvP or WvW a good idea to look into? I just have a lot of random questions that I haven’t been able to find answers for elsewhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks yall.
