I forgot to mention, my wife has the same exact machine as I do. I matched all of her settings, drivers, etc, and I still have the issues. Her install of the game is a direct copy+paste of my install. I’m really not sure why I am having issues at all. This reminds me a lot of when Doom 3 came out, had the new DRM security crap on it, and it wouldn’t even allow certain hardware to run it even though it had the potential to, and was the same hardware my dad was running. That was a $50 waste that I never got to play. Seems to be heading down that road with this game too….
Still the same issues. I ended up installing the game on an external HDD to see if maybe there are issues with my main HDD that aren’t being detected, and the game still froze after a few minutes of playing. I’m installing the new beta driver right now.
I know the servers as a whole were having major issues right after patching. Maybe it is resolved now. I downloaded and am running AVG’s tuneup program and once it is done I will try the game again. Perhaps I won’t have the same issues.
Still using the 306.97 drivers, I had no issues last night, did the Shatterer and about 6 heart vendors in the region with no issues. ArenaNet really has to dig in to this. It’s a common enough problem that hardware cannot be blamed. I didn’t try the 313.95 drivers for fear of breaking it again.
So I was able to play for roughly an hour by myself prior to today’s patch with the driver you recommended, 60fps frame limit, and my settings at medium. Immediately after patching I continued to have issues. Now it seems to be even worse. Whenever the game crashes, it doesn’t close the process and won’t allow me to end it (not the task, the process). Then when I go to reboot my computer to clear all of my processes, my computer “shuts down”, but the power won’t turn off. I have to hold down the power button until it shuts off. Then when it boots back up again it’s just like I had done a normal restart (no windows errors from a bad shutdown). It appears that the GW2 process that is hanging is causing my computer to hang as well. I am not a happy player.
I would try pretty much anything someone could offer as a possible resolution. I will download that driver version and see what happens. I’ll report back once I have time to get into the game and play for a couple hours with the 306.97 driver.
I recently started having similar issues. For me, they seemed to have started around the Jan10th patch. I had the 310.70 driver installed at the time. See my thread in the tech support area. (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Crashing-problems/first#post1283603) …not that ArenaNet has bothered to reply. Seems to be a common theme around here these days.
Basically, I ended up going to the 306.97 nVidia driver and setting the framerate limiter in the game to 60fps. Installing the driver, I do not install the 3D vision stuff (Can’t use it) or the nVidia HD audio driver (Using RealTek). I was still having crashing issues regardless of what the framerate limiter was set to on both the 310.70 and 310.90 drivers and have crashing problems if I set the limiter to unlimited with the 306.97 drivers. I’ve also turned v-sync off globally in the nVidia control panel. After about 5-6 hours of play in GW2, I have not had issues using this configuration. It even seems stable with very busy events, such as the Claw of Jormag. I do not have such issues with any other games that I’ve tried. I have tested with Nexuiz, Skyrim, Warp, Left 4 Dead 2, Darksiders 2 and Rage. I have also stress tested and benchmarked the card with both FurMark and OC Scanner (I have an eVGA card) and have had no issues and no artifacting.
If you don’t mind swapping drivers, try this configuration and see if it helps.
This IS a GW2 game bug, I have no doubt about it.
Hey guys.
I seem to be having a constant issue with crashes, and nothing I have tried has seemed to remedy the issue. The crashes can occur 5 min after logging in or a couple hours later. Whenever I am doing something the last sound that was playing repeats itself like it is crashing and the game freezes, then I have to either close the game from the task manager (it shows the client as Not Responding), or my video driver gives an error stating that the kernel stopped working and has recovered. I have read several other people on other forums (including this one) having the same issue, but with no resolution. It wouldn’t bother me so badly if I didn’t have to complete each fractal level about 5 times to get to the end (not only does that mean I need to find a new group, but until the next patch that group is without a 5th person).
System Specs:
Dell XPS L502x Laptop
i7 2630QM
6GB RAM
GeForce GT540M 2GB (tried drivers from the ones that came factory installed through all of the official release drivers and beta drivers up to the current 310.90)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
What I’ve done to troubleshoot:
-Lower gfx settings
-Lower audio settings
-Update drivers (chipset, audio, gfx)
-Installed every Windows 7 update
-Contacted Dell and they replaced my mobo/gfx card
-Increased my virtual memory to 9GB from the 6GB it was set to
-Replaced RAM
-Fresh install of Windows 7 from OEM disc
-Fresh install of GW2
-Defrag
-Disk check
I’ve probably done even more than that, but I can’t remember it all off the top of my head. This is an increasingly annoying issue and if anyone has a resolution I would appreciate it.
3 types of crashes: out of memory, assertion failed, and messy crash

I just received the same error (out of memory) and am using windows 7 64 bit with 6GB of RAM. Only the game was open. Shouldn’t be seeing this. Also, the most common crash I keep having is the “messy” crash that OP stated. Happens about every 2 hours or so. Just had Dell replace my mobo as they thought it may be a gfx card issue since we troubleshot all software aspects that we could think of (it’s a laptop). Still having issues. :/
