Guild Wars 2

Hi guys,

Before you berate me for creating a “class help” thread, please let me explain. I understand these threads are abundant and that the tried and true “play what you like” is the ever present theme, however, I am simply trying to find out, in the current state of the game, what it is that I like.

About me:

I played GW2 from release until about 3 – 4 months after as primarily a Thief. I enjoyed the game greatly as far as WvW, but hated the unorganized mess that was dungeons in arena net’s vision of “no holy trinity!” MMO progression. While the Thief offered me an amazing experience into solo / small group WVW play, it always left me with something to be desired…

Fast Forward to Now:

I am now returning to GW2 and wanting to find a class that fits me and my play style. I would like a class that offers the following:

1) WvW PVP 1v1 Potential
2) Dungeon Potenital – Desired by groups

My priority would most likely be PVP and being able to hold my own in a pitched 1v1 battle, however, I also enjoy being useful in group settings. I enjoy classes with a complex playstyle, and for this reason have already ruled out the Warrior. I am mainly leaning towards an elementalist with D/D as my focused spec, but would greatly appreciate some input from people who have been playing the game recently and know what the current state of affairs is.

Thanks for the responses guys. So far we are both level 10 and having a lot of fun. Obviously havn’t really delved to deep into builds yet, both just going for +power items and learning our skills.

So the consensus seems to be that one thief should go for a S/P or D/P type build and stack mainly power/crit/tough/vit and attempt to evasion/blind tank while the other goes D/D and heavy into condition dmg? That is definitly something we will try (I have already been mainly running D/P). One question though, wouldn’t the DPS heavy D/D pull aggro and defeat the purpose of the evasion tank thief?

We also do both run a SB offhand for both travel and kiting and its nice to both sit back and lob cluster bombs and trick shots on big groups.

Anyways, we will continue to play with it but for now D/D condition and S/P or D/P evasion thief is what we’ll try. Many thanks!

Hi all,

A friend of mine and I have decided to roll two sylvari thieves and I was wondering what you guys think would be the best build for us to duo with while leveling? Obviously we will likely try out multiple but im wondering if there is a general consensus on what is most effecient while leveling and if there is any build that will take advantage of two thieves vs 1. As in, should we both go condition dmg and DOT up packs? Or possibly go with 2 diff builds? Any advice would be most welcome!

Hah, but I see what you’re getting at. I guess in the end being an impenetrable wall wielding a huge weapon with plate mail and being an asset to my friends sounds like the best route for me. Guardian it is! Thanks everyone for your advice!

I have both a guardian and thief at 80.

If I want fun I log on my thief and run around killing people, especially low level people, and get a lot of badges. If I want to play more support then I log on my guardian and either hold the front line or charge in to break up opposition zergs. You can set both professions up to be support or offensive. Guardians don’t all have to be bunker build guardians and thiefs don’t all need to be backstab build. It all depends on what profession mechanic you like better and what suits you.

Awsome! Thanks for the post and suggestion. I am curious though, you say if you want fun you log on your thief, does that mean the guardian isn’t fun and you log on it more to help out the team rather than you yourself enjoying it? That is kind of what I fear from the Guardian, that sure, I can support my team and they will love me for it, but I will never be able to actually get my own kills or be sufficient on my own.

I understand what you are saying, that you can build your character up a certain way. It just seems that even if I went all out offense on a Guardian, you wouldn’t be able to get the kills / do as well solo as a thief since thieves are so slippery and yea, stealth is so much fun lol. I do love the plate however, and the 2 hand weapons are a blast. Ahh, tough decision it is!

As the title states I am trying to decide which character to focus on. I mainly want to do WvW but I would of course also participate in all aspects of the game with this char. While I will likely end up playing both, I am curious as to what you guys feel is the more rewarding class at the moment in Wvw, Guardian or Thief?

From my experience so far on Guardian, it seems fun but seems like it is a “mainly support” class who has a hard time getting solo kills or functioning on his own. While this isn’t a bad thing, I would kinda of like the ability to operate solo if I had to, to be able to get kills on my own and survive to live another day.

My Thief is a bit lower level (lvl 53 while the Guardian is 80) so I am not fully up to speed on everything it can do, but it seems much more solo friendly and able to get kills. I like the fact that he can get in, get a kill and get out with all the stealth abilities. He is however, much more squishy than the guardian (of course) if and when ppl are actually able to catch me.

Anyways, what are your opinions? If you could have one and only one as your main at 80 mainly for WvW what would it be and why?
