Choosing Server to play on

well, the only difference a server now makes is who you fight for in WvW. chose by how the server is doing or if you are not interested in WvW use your prefered search engine to find community sites for servers and see what they do. many servers have people that organise events etc. find a guild you like and move to the server they are based on – but again, that is likely a WvW thing.
http://mos.millenium.org/na/matchups

if you chose by WvW rankings then be aware that “tier 1” servers tend to be stacked and will likely have queues at peak times. and under populated servers will be put up against servers with a higher population and have very unbalanced matchups. the current matchups between Dragonbrand, Ehmry Bay, Anvil Rock are a good example of this. one server is winning by a large margin so likely very little to do for the people there a lot of the time and the servers that are losing have little chance of doing much as they are so out numbered.

but that is only if your server choice takes into account that you want to take part in WvW.

I'm kind of loss at what to do....?

i will try to answer everything, but keep in mind it is my opinion as some of the questions do not have factual answers.

*Fractals-what are they….?

only done fractals a couple of times. really did not like some of it. it is a string of random things. like camp fires you have to keep lit while things attack you. underwater swimming which i assume is a speed challenge. and maybe some jumping puzzles. someone else can likely answer better.

*How should I manage resources?

with your bank. you can buy gems for in-game gold and buy more bank slots. or get a stack of 250 and sell the rest. could take up crafting to get rid of them that way. but if you have no use for them… sell them. you can icnrease the stack sizes to 500, but again, you need gems.

*Following on from that, what about crafting skills?

not really. the crafting system in GW2, in my opinion, is terrible. it is very much like most of the MMOs out there. crafting is a time/money sink. there is little that you can get from it which is worth while. it is difficult to make money from it or any kind of business in game.
IF you want ascended (+5% stats over exotic) then you need crafting. otherwise… just sell the mats.
exotics can be made via crafting but there are more fun ways to get them. dungeon tokens or WvW or just buy them. buying them from the trading post is cheaper than buying the mats usually or at least the same price.

*How do you manage to stay interested?

i dont. very little of the living story i liked. most of it seemed very disjointed to me and it had very little effect on the world around me. a few of the later living stories i liked. but they were short and ended quickly. and the living stories were not permanent. and now any that i missed i have to pay for. all the living story things were very temporary.

*PvP-What am I supposed to do?

there is sPvP. small arena fights where you control areas to get points and win. there are ranked matches if competitive play is your thing.
there is WvW (the only reason i still play GW2). which has its issues. but overall i find it more fun than the rest of the game. lower population servers are at a disadvantage and high population servers can be also. long queues to get onto the maps and when you get there… nothing to do. unless you are fortunate enough to have a balanced matchup. check here to see how your server is doing – http://mos.millenium.org/na/matchups
there are optimal builds for both WvW and sPvP. but play whatever you have fun with and works for you. if it is the current meta… great. if not… play about with traits and things until you are happy.

*Dungeons…

i started to do dungeons but it is hard to get a non-elitist group together. which i find ironic given how the mechanics in the game work. make friends who you like to play with and do some dungeons. unless you are elitist – then finding a group will be easier. but most people seem to do fractals.
PvE seems to be wear full berserker gear and just speed run everything.

*Finally, a crash course into everything…

no idea to be honest. i stopped paying attention to living stories after too many disappointments and jumping puzzles being pushed at me.

there is a patch coming up on the 23rd which is changing the trait and armour system in preparation for the expansion. there is also a new WvW map coming when the expansion is released. no release date as yet for that.

but overall, its mostly balances and some bug fixing – not as much as many would have liked though.

a new area – dry top. and a new world boss – tequal or something. think that was added after south sun. world boss timer here – http://dulfy.net/2014/04/23/event-timer/

hope that sort of helps at least.

i think the minion AI is in context with what they are. necromancy is considered to be very dark and evil. some little kitten of an azuran comes along and forces them to be “servants”. not the “make me a cup of tea!” type servant but “charge that full plate warrior with the HUGE axe and take one for the team!” type servant. they are refusing to and watching you die – as per their evil nature.

’tis all good ;D

but yes… i want the AI fixed. i loved MM in the first guild wars. sadly GW2 really has not lived up to that purely because the AI is so broken. i found ways of making them do what you want (usually)… but it involves not moving for a while.

that is, as the error states, a memory error. can be caused by bad memory, a dying CPU, corrupt file or drivers or a software conflict of some sort. will be fun for you trying to find out what is causing it. have found a couple of links that may help.

http://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/instruction-at-referenced-memory-could-not-be-read/

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1274-uohk-5653

try with as many programs closed as possible. turn off the firewall, anti-virus, voice programs, notepad, stickynotes, audo HD center, steam, email client, anti-malwear… everything.

press CTRL+ALT+DEL and go into “Task Manager” > “Processes” and turn off anything you recognise as non-essential (the worst that can happen by doing this is you have to restart windows).

if you still get the error then restart windows and after the post screen (the boring one with numbers that shows as soon as you turn the computer on) and press F8 until you get a menu. you want to go into safe mode with networking. safemode is windows with no drivers and the bare essentials running. and networking gives you internet access to allow you to download.

if you are on windows 8.x then safemode is more of a pain to get into apparently.
http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way/

also, just out of interest, you do have enough space left on your hard drive? though that should give a read/write error rather than a memory error. but never know… software can be fickle.

oh, and try deleting all the GW2 files (including the installer) and start over rather than trying to restart a failed download if you have not already tried that.

have a look for faceplates with built in filters if your phone company allows it. they tend to be far more reliable. or try alcatel filters as they tend to be well made. alcatel also make the speedtouch range of routers and modems – but i would not recommend one of their routers/modems unless you had a very bad ADSL signal. alcatel supply a lot of the DSL equipment to other companies for use at telephone exchanges.

and fingers crossed that the issue is sorted! nor more pathpings ;D

thank you for running those tests. i can still see some (though minimal) packet loss. sadly i could only find one online tool which does a pathping. i done some to the IPs starting with 62.38. as those belong to your ISP. and there was no packet loss. i had to run it several times as it only sent 5 packets at a time.

i have also run some pathpings to the addresses starting with 62.38. (your ISP owns these) and apart from a couple of hops that do not respond to pings i got no packet loss.

ideally, run these tests at different times of the day and see if the time of day shows any pattern.

from the log file you posted it looks like you are using a cable to connect to your router. is this correct? have you got another network cable in case the one you are using has degraded or become damaged somehow.

do you have ADSL? if so, swap out the filter/splitter and remove telephones from the phone line. if you have digital phones then unplug them from the mains power as well.

if you have SDSL then the filters are likely built in to the phone socket and are usually tougher than tanks. no idea who is responsible for the built in filters in Greece.

if you have cable/fiber optic… then… little you can do other than swapping out the router.

turn your router off for a few minutes and back on. this will clear its cache and give it a little time to cool down if it is getting hot. cats have been known to sleep on routers because they can get rather warm. do you own a cat? fur really clogs things up.

do you have another router? or modem? if you do, test with a spare one. maybe a friend has one collecting dust that you can swap out for a little while to test.

i never have liked packetloss and speed issues. they are a royal pain.

are there other computers connected to the network that are turned on? turn them off and retest.

is your computer downloading or uploading anything? even without you knowing about it?
i would ask you to boot into safe mode with networking enabled to rule out any malicious programs running in the background (not necessarily a virus) but… can try it – i assume its simple. but does not look as simple as i expected.

http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way/

do you have another computer you can test? a friend with a laptop who can come over and do some pathpings? give him/her lots of coffee and cake!

to rule out any bizarre DNS things….
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/fl/change-dns-servers-windows-8.htm

for the primary and alternate DNS try…

(Comodo free DNS servers)
8.26.56.26
8.20.247.20.

or

(OpenDNS free DNS servers)
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

can always set it back to get dynamically again after retest with either pathping or playing GW2.

MTU is next if all the above does not work… far too late at night for me to type MTU things. if you STILL have issues. you have proven that it is not your side of the setup. it is either your ISP or ANet.

the first thing any employee in tech support will do is get you to run tests on your end. because it is easier (and cheaper) for them to get you to test your equipment before they start to faff about with theirs.

i could be really wrong though. and i am asking you to do things unnecessarily… i might be missing something. but… it gives me something to do and keeps me out of trouble

i am in Europe (england) and i play on the US servers because i have friends who play on there and my ping is anywhere from 140ms to 230ms. i would assume that going from US to EU will have similar latency. though i am closer to the US servers than you would be to the EU servers – but only by 800 or so miles at a vague guess.

you will not notice much, if any, difference. if you do though you will quickly get used to it. i used to play another game on US servers where my ping was 300 ish and it was far less of a forgiving game and i done ok.

edit: read your post wrong. but with a latency of 150 you should not be getting rubber-banding. even with twice that it would be highly unlikely. maybe check for possible packetloss because my average is higher than yours and i have no issues what so ever.

unfortunately you are not able to guest from EU to US servers to test. will have to pay for a transfer to test inworld.

try a pathping to 206.127.158.1 from the command prompt and see what results you get.

first it is not weird that you are suddenly getting issues. that is what happens when something stops working properly ;P

the IP 206.127.157.86 (ncsoft.com) which has the 100% packet loss i would put down to the server not responding to pings.

however, as you are getting packetloss over multiple hops i would assume that it is probably not the servers themselves and either your end or your ISP (maybe even whoever owns the phone line – but you still will need to go through your ISP for that anyway).

try a pathping to other places. bring up the command prompt by typing “cmd” (without the quotes) into the box on the start menu.
in the command prompt type in…

pathping www.google.com

after that is done, try

pathping www.bing.com

in the command prompt window you can right click to get a menu and “Select All” then press “Enter”. that will copy everything that is selected. paste it into notepad to remove any surplus information.

my results to the IP you tested are…

terrible formatting in this tiny edit box. but anyways… you can see i get some packet loss on hop 8 which could mean that particular hop is busy and so the server is not responding to all ping requests. hop 9 is 100% loss so i think it does not respond to pings at all. all others are 0% packet loss. compare these results to yours where there is consistent packet loss on every hop.

if you have the same issues when doing a pathping to google, yahoo, microsoft, bing, theregister etc. then the issue is most definitely not with Anet or NCSoft.

the problem with packetloss issues and these tests is that all it shows is that some servers are not responding. it does not show the reason for it. it could be simple DNS issue or MTU or something else. even the simplest thing can cause bizarre and seemingly unrelated issues. i worked for an ISP in tier1/2/3 support for a while and a simple DNS issue denied a customer access to most POP3 email servers.

if packetloss is on all other pathping tests, then you need to work out why. depending on the type of broadband you have the tests will be different. but i can see your ISP is Hellas Online (HOL Network Operations). might be an idea to contact them and ask them if there are any known issues or work being carried out which might cause packetloss. they might have access to tools which they can use to help – such as a line test or profile checking or whatever. no idea, each ISP makes or has access to different tools.

to rule out issues on your side of the setup you need to find out if you are on cable/fiber optic or ADSL. or even SDSL. next what router you have specifically and if you are using a cable to connect your computer to the router or if you are using wireless. i can see that your brand of router is broadcom.

hope that helps and if you can provide more information about your setup then hopefully either i, or others, can give you some troubleshooting assistance.

i think that whoever is doing it is likely not a hacker. seems to be a script-kiddie – using tools that others have written and all is needed is a little button pushing.

there are distributions of linux with the tools already part of it to perform a DoS attack. a botnet is not really needed. though its helpful. i doubt the attacker could afford its rental on his/her pocket money.

the fact that the attacks are sporadic and/or at specific times, to me at least, suggests that there is some sort of constraint… like… its his little sisters turn on the computer.

or he is time-sharing a part of a botnet with some other psuedo angst ridden PPT (pre-pubescent teenager).

maybe it is the modern equivalent of burning ants with a magnifying glass.

oh well. never mind. it happens, and eventually it will catch up with him.

Fixing the zerg problem: Supply Capacity

in WvW

Posted by: Theorl.3491

Theorl.3491

i think the basic setup of WvW is good, but has large flaws. namely population and the advantages of zerging in almost every situation.

the double supply capacity i think is a nice idea. i think the smaller population servers would find that it helps them more than it helps a larger zerg. the defenders of a low WvW population server would certainly have more of an advantage than they already do. and the zergserver that does not fortify because it can come back and easily cap will have to change tactics.

the lower population server will always be at a disadvantage against a higher populated one. but with the double supply the gap will be closed a little. especially if there were more tower/keep defenses which took supply from the attacking zerg as someone already suggested.
maybe building siege in a keep/tower you own either cost less supply, or a worker will help build with effectively “free supply” then the smaller population server will find defense easier against larger numbers.

evenly matched servers will notice little difference as it will still basically be even. but the smaller population servers i think will find things easier overall. as one persons efforts will go further. in a larger zerg… they had the people for it anyway and each effort by an individual is watered down by the efforts of others.

maybe cap the amount of siege that can be placed by location. a keep allows for 20, tower 10. open field 3 with a minimum distance between other open field siege. then to build two catas the zerg has to split to build and guard them. giving the lower population server at least some chance against half the attacking zerg before the other half can run to their defense. this would make seige placement more criticle and could force larger zergs to split up more often.

the dismantling of siege is a good idea which has been mentioned. especially rams. mayhap a new WvW ability of “seige engineer”. can repair them a little. but never to full health. maybe can always repair 30% of what health they have remaining at the time.

wondering if it is to do with path finding and potential exploiting. trying to work out when its ok for a pet to jump from a wall or scale a wall. if you are defending, not so much of a problem. but if you are attacking then it is. there are likely many instances where a pet jumping down or scaling a wall/rock/cliff could be exploited to some degree. so instead of that headache, the pet just uses pathfinding. if that fails, it teleports to your side (eventually).

WvW slight overhaul suggestions

Theorl.3491

4b) replace gathering nodes

replace the gathering nodes as the WvW has been known to be farmed by people. those who are farming just for resources are clogging up the queue and contributing nothing.

if the nodes were replaced by ones which can be used in WvW ONLY. these would be used for upgrades to replace karma. each node can be gathered by 10 people. it then disappears and re-spawns somewhere else randomly with a re-spawn timer of 5-10 minutes – which will prevent node camping.

these resources are then dropped off at supply camps/keeps/towers. the resources would be something like wood, stone, vegetables and metal.

veg and steel to upgrade guards and dollys (they have to eat something after all).

wood and stone for structural upgrades.

… or something like that.

the resources disappear from your inventory on a WvW reset.. oh, and they would also need to be soulbound. but the key is that they have to be dropped off at a resource point in order to be used.

supplies would still be used for upgrades as they are now.

5) reward constructive participation

track what people do with a point tally. these are already tracked in the achievements.

different rewards for whatever servers come 1st, 2nd and 3rd. the winning server should have a mass reward for everyone on the server (regardless if the person took part in WvW or not). and then other rewards based on the persons contribution. this may discourage server alliances and also encourage people to try and win, or even come 2nd if they are losing.

if dolly escorting or node gathering (provided the resources are dropped off), were also rewarded as well as taking a keep or defending it then this might encourage people to contribute more. it gives those who are a lower level and at a disadvantage in combat to contribute something else too.

the rewards should also not be given until the end of WvW. and what the rewards should be… don’t know.

maybe silver, a bit of XP based on a multiplier that is dictated by server position and your contribution. black lion chest keys. 5% XP bonus to everyone on the winning server for 24 hours. or 5% more money from mob loot.

not sure. just something to encourage people to take positive actions towards the war effort and to stop people taking advantage of certain things that are already in place along with encouraging tactical play and team work.

hoping something in that wall of text is a worth while suggestion at least.

WvW slight overhaul suggestions

in Suggestions

Posted by: Theorl.3491

Theorl.3491

WvW suggestions. this is all opinions and ideas to try and help WvW improve from its current state. apologies if something similar has already been suggested. not read everything on the forums.

transfer abuse goes without saying. and i am pretty sure a fix is in the works.

1) length of matches

change to either 3 days or 4 days. a week (and soon to be 2 weeks) is too long i think, and 24 hour matches felt pointless.

this is partly to keep the interest of the losing server. last week, a commander decided to just go from server to server and zerg the supply camps for XP and karma. we then lost everything we had. fully upgraded keep etc as half the server followed him for pure XP and karma farming. also, the other two servers seemed to make an alliance. so all was lost and no one had any motivation.

2) commander role

the commander role should not be a 100g book. at the moment people with more money than sense are getting the book and leading zergs which usually end up going nowhere. if someone doesn’t have the book that person doesn’t get listened to even if the suggestions on tactics is good – this is infuriating to be honest. just because someone don’t have 100g to spend on a book. should not be able to buy a rank like that.

people also just follow the commander icon blindly.

i cannot remember the name of the game, and never played it, but someone could volunteer to be the commander and if they were doing a bad job they could be voted out of the position. but they had a tactical map and could see where everyone was and they were able to place icons for things that needed to be be built so people could go and make them. the commander should also be able to see enemies if someone on his team can see them. not exact numbers though. that will make scouting worth while and also give the commander a real tactical role which is more than “folowZ me ppl! i r zrgin!!11!”22!!".

the system i just suggested might be flawed too, but it encourages tactics rather than mindless zerg – which is common, and quite often, it is not a permanent solution to winning. having said that zergs have their place – but then a “zerg” with a purpose likely is not a zerg.

at the very least the commander needs to be able to see where groups are and to be able to give them directions.

3) the party/squad system

this really needs to be enforced i think to help with cohesion and role allocation.

4) WvW is not a place to farm anything.

get rid of XP and karma totally. there are groups of people farming XP who contribute nothing to WvW and put that server at a disadvantage.
