I play a Ranger and my wife plays Necro and it seems to work out fairly well. Necro already has a lot of survivability with the Deathshroud and while I am on the Ranger I can provide pseudo-tanking with the Greatsword and Bear, or grab the wolf for aoe fear, fern hound for the additional heal and so forth. Also with the Ranger a lot of dodge and evade with the longsword/dagger.
Granted we are only mid to high 20’s right now. The biggest problem I’ve seen so far is a lack of damage, but we win via attrition with just dodging and whittling down the targets with conditions, my pets, (usually have a wolf or fern hound for the fear/heal, and a Raven for the blind), and of course the long bow.
Honestly though, I cannot see a problem with any one of the potential classes to duo with. Each brings something unique to the table. Warrior for sheer damage/tanking and what not (depending on build of course), Mesmer with more conditions (shatters, staff, etc) and Ranger fills a niche of just bringing a little bit of everything. Depending on the pet’s you use, spec you use and weapons, yeah.
I enjoy the Necro/Ranger duo. Its not the fastest killing combo, but for just having fun, we really enjoy it. Then again, I do not like steam rolling over everything, and rather have a slight challenge to the game. Makes the game more fun for me.
