To me, vertical progression is like mountain climbing. Spend 4 days climbing to the top, but the view is breath-taking from there. Put a flag up there, and you beat the summit. On to the next mountain.

Horizontal progression is like a theme park. Spend 4 days walking around the park, enjoying the rides. People don’t mind walking between rides, as long as there are some fun to be had. They give you a passport to stamp at each ride and give you a sense of accomplishment.

The problem is, many people (including me), bought the game on the premise that this game is a theme park according to the manifesto. If one want a mountain climbing game, WoW would be a more suitable choice.

Suddenly Anet put a ride on a mountain in the middle of a theme park. So, some people feel.. confused, what to be expected of this game.

It’s all about setting expectations for your customers. So far, people are getting psychological whiplash. Diminishing returns on dungeon runs or encouraging people to farm dungeon tokens? If this is a pvp/wvw oriented game, why not balancing new content/items there before pve/dungeons section?

Thanks for bringing that up. My heart broke all over again. Whatever happened to the game promised in that video? I was beyond excited for that. But that’s not what we got.

Will there be a mystic forge recipe where you can throw old cursed-shore-vendor armors in, plus may be new karma-bought ingredients and, poof, you get ascended upgrades? Because I invested 250k karma to equip each of my 3 lvl80s. And then one day, I woke up and found out my current armors will be outdated.

The class does have issues, but most of what the OP wrote is his own issue. Yes it’s annoying to see “obstructed” for no good reason. Yes, it’s annoying that pet AI is just this side of kitten and has great difficulty attacking anything that moves — which is everything in PVP. For PVE I would also add that my pet couldn’t hold aggro if I glued it to his paw.

But if you’re getting hit by anything other than another ranged player, you’re doing it wrong. Longbow & shortbow. Or, your weapon is “the bow” and you have 10 skills. However you want to look at it. If a bow ranger ever gets killed by a melee player, it happened because you were in the wrong place and doing the wrong thing. Swords and knives can only hurt you if for some reason you take your ranged class into melee range. Why on Earth would you do that?

I don’t know, to me, it means bows are our source of damage, traps/spirits/pets are situation based.

I apologize, I received rude replies so I replied with rude responses. You can take babies as an insult if you wish but I don’t know how else to compare it. Babies whine and cry when they don’t get what they want right away. That’s exactly how people are acting. It seemed like a fitting analogy.

Before hand we had a ranger, shortbow/axe/warhorn trap condition ranger on our tournament team. His job was to neutralize bunkers with a ally, steal svanir/chieftain and take down the enemy lord. Before the patch him and one other were able to take down bunker guardians very quickly. After the patch he can still take down bunkers very quickly. He can still roam effectively and intercept other roamers and take them 1v1. He can still steal svanir and chieftain. He can still solo all the lord monsters with a 1 defender. I don’t know what else you want me to say? There is little/no difference in his performance and ability to do what is needed in our tpvp team after the patch. Are the numbers smaller? Maybe, but the traps still apply a lot of conditions, shortbow still applies a lot of conditions and he can still solo like the best of us.

You formed an opinion based on one sampling size? This is MMO, it’s for the mass. The class was not overpowered before, you hardly see rangers on top of scoreboards, and the nerf was uncalled for. Just suck it up and use trap build? is that the best advice you can offer?

yep, easiest way to encourage people not use SB is to decrease LB auto-attack interval by 40 milliseconds. It’s only fair? well may be people are still not using LB until rapidfire [Obstructed] is fixed. But animation fix —> “ops, we’ll take a look” —> “yeah, it’s a nerf, but it’s not fun that way anyway” is just unprofessional, IMHO.

BTW, did NCSoft stocks go down? if not, then 700 comments don’t mean much.

Couldn’t agree more. Everything else doesn’t work properly. The nerf is uncalled for, it’s a matter of principle. I won’t take 7% less fries at McDonald’s for no reason, not that I’m going to starve to death without that 7%.

I don’t hear complaints that rangers down thieves or mesmers left and right. At the end of PvP matches, who do we see on the top of scoreboard? Rangers? Necros? That means something is off, ranger people just need to go learn2play? Of course, may be if you use trap build with certain playstyle, you can still kill other classes effectively. Sooner or later, traps will get nerfed. Then what?

You see thieves with backstabs, pistol whips, heartseeking. You see mesmers with GS, Staff, shatter build, bunker elementalists, GS/LB warriors, Hammer warriors, rifles, etc.
I wanna see varieties of rangers, LB rangers, GS rangers, not strawberry shortcake rangers with silly pets that people can just kite around.

This is MMO, it’s what works for the mass, not just some wizkids.
